Founders’ Day will be upon us soon. Traditionally it has been a day when we celebrate who we are as a school by recalling and acknowl-edging the heritage of our Founding Charisms, the Marist Brothers, Brigidine Sisters and local parishes.

In 2017 the focus was acknowledging the local indigenous herit-age of our land. In 2018 we are responding to the college theme for 2018: “United we embrace uncharted paths” by focusing on the Galen House groups that students belong to.

Students are encouraged to come dressed in their house colours in some way. If they do so they will receive participation points that are allocated to their house. More information will come out about this closer to the event. Students will organize a stall, game or activity

with their homeroom and these will occur during an extended lunch time 1:10 -2.45 pm. There will be a Junior Assembly Period 3 at 11.05 am and a Senior Assembly at 12.20 pm.

Students will conclude the day in homeroom at the normal time of 3.29 pm. It is a compulsory attendance day and students are asked to remain at school for the entire day. They will need some money for food stalls and activities, and some activities may raise funds for causes associated with the house charisms, however, the purpose of the day is to celebrate our identity rather than raise money for causes.

Points allocated on the day will accrue toward the awarding of the House Cup for 2018 at the end of the year.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for this year was held on Monday 23rd July, all of the executive roles were open for nominations. It was great to have some of our current executive team members re-nominated for their roles and accepted their nominations. Jodie Sutton resigned as president, being part of the committee for over 2 years as President and 2 years as Secretary. I would like acknowl-edge the great work and dedication Jodie has committed and will continue, as the GPA Board Member Representa-tive. Thank you Jodie and we look forward to your contri-bution to the Galen Board. The President Report detailed some of the work the committee was involved in, such as the Debutant Ball, funding to specific school projects, Orchestral Chimes, End of Year School Awards, Ukuleles, Melinda Tankard, Resilience Project and the support of the VEX Robotics Team.

We always welcome new parents/guardians to our meet-ings, so feel free to come along and be involved in discus-sions on relevant issues that will benefit the education and/or wellbeing of your student. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 11th September 6.30pm at Galen Staff Room. All are welcome to attend. Introducing Tom Wright’s Black Diggers and Fred D’Aguiar’s The Longest Memory with Ms. Donna Hill and Ms. Kate Angikiamo

Wednesday 8th August7:30pm

Galen Resource Center The Parent Book Club is designed to give everyone a window into the books that are studied at Year 12, in a way that’s fun, social and low key. You are welcome to come to one session or more. The aim is to get to know others in the school com-munity, role model reading for your child and discuss some of the big ideas of the text at the same time your child is studying them. The book club is not for your child. It’s for parents to enjoy. It’s not about educating parents in every aspect of the text and training them to help their child, it’s about opening up conversations about the texts.

The session will begin with Donna and Kate giving some background and context for the texts to be discussed in an informal way. You’ll receive a few notes on this background and some key ideas for discussion. You don’t have to talk, if you don’t wish to, but the club will provide a friendly and in-formal atmosphere which makes it easy for all to contribute. Tea, coffee and nibbles will be provided and we’ll run from 7:30-8:30pm. You don’t need to have read the texts to attend. We’re hoping that the evening will whet your appetite to do so. If you are interested in coming to the August 8th session, please email: [email protected] with the subject heading: Parent Book Club. If this will be your first session, please also introduce yourself and your Year 12 child.

The session will also provide information about where young people and their carers can re-ceive support for their mental health, and some pathways for support in the local area. Galen VEX have been very busy since they came back from their adventures in America, with many evening presenta-tions to the service clubs that supported us: Lions, Rotary and Zonta. The team also got a special invite by the Lead Scientist of Victoria Amanda Caples, where they got to have a 2 hour lunch with her and she organized a special visit to the St Vincent’s Hospitals research lab: The Biofab3D lab. The students go to see some cutting edge research, such as 3D printing of human cells and the Biopen to help osteoarthritis sufferers. https://www.biofab3d.org/project-1 Maddy was also selected to be part of the VEX exhibitions at the World Skills Event in Sydney where she got to dem-onstrate VEX robotics and explain what VEX was all about to people from all walks of life and all ages – Politicians, business people, teachers, students and families (estimated 15,000 – 20,000 visitors over the two days). https://www.skillsshow.org.au/whats-on/tech-hub They team also presented at the Ovens and Murray Regional Assembly, where they impressed the State Ministers Jaala Pulford (Agriculture & Regional Development) and Ben Carroll (Industry and Employment). The Galen VEX students have also given up some of their holidays to share their knowledge to 30 grade 5 and 6 students from around the local region at a 2 Day Robotics and Coding Holiday program. Maddy and Rutvik have also been busy preparing for their second round interviews to get into the National Youth

Science Forum that is held in Canberra during the summer school holidays. https://www.nysf.edu.au Next week the Galen VEX team will be heading to Melbourne again, this time as presenter at the famous DigiCon Conference at Australia Catholic University. http://digicon.vic.edu.auSee our conference bio here: http://digicon.vic.edu.au/sessions/robotics-regionals-to-the-worlds Then during National Science week, the team will be one of the main attractions at the Galen STEM EXPO http://galenstemexpo18.weebly.comAnd they will be also presenting at the Digital Harvest Confer-ence at CSU Wangaratta. https://www.digitalharvest.it

No rest for the wicked... And talented!

Escape from East Berlin! As a part of their study, Unit 1/2 Twentieth Century History students have been studying the Berlin Wall and the devastating impact it had on citizens of Berlin. After analysing the construction, impact and various escape attempts, students were given the opportunity to put theory into practice. Students were given a card that detailed who they were. They then weighted up the risks and decide whether their character would attempt escape. If they could pass an obstacle course and guards, they were able to eat as many chocolates that were available in West Berlin (the other side of the classroom). Students had a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

On the 1st of August, the Senior Girls Basketball team consist-ing of; Shani Rickard, Chloe Storer, Jorja Reidy, Gabby Wales, Tess Larkin and late addition Ellie Laffy, loaded into the mini-bus to head to the Regional Championships in Shepparton.

In their first of two games they played Kilmore SC, their aim for the match was a goal from everyone in the team. Chloe was consistent in her shooting, displaying her strength and skill in the post. Ellie made a clean steal to turn the ball over and finished it with a lay-up, with Shani showing her form and making some impressive shots. Gabby loved her lay-up and the team continued to show off their abilities, playing some clean and skilful basketball. Jorja tried for a three, Chloe sunk both her free throws and Tess put up some good shots, but no goals. It was evident that Galen significantly outmatched their opponent who were without a single substitute, but all girls showed fabulous sportsmanship in sighting the mercy rule and playing off their man to give them an opportunity to score. It the second half Galen continued their form, putting up some great shots and dominating the rebounds. Tess final-ly got her first score with Gabby, Shani and Ellie continuing to share the ball around. All players had an equal presence in the play and continued to encourage their opposition despite the one-sided scoreboard. Chloe had another lot of free throws; air-balling the first, but redeeming herself with the second. Jorja managed to wedge the ball between the ring and the basket on her second sling at the three, before managing to goal one in the closing minutes of the second half. HT: 24 – 4 FT:54 – 4

In the second game the Galen girls played SEDA College, proving too good yet again for their competition. Gabby was all over the play, showing great defence and smothering her opponents. Jorja showcased her unique throwing style in her ability to bomb it up the court from a turn over. She turned up the pressure, forcing simple errors from the SEDA team. Ellie turned it on with some textbook lay-ups and Shani continued her form, sinking some neat baskets. Chloe dominated the key, taking some great rebounds with talk from the opposing bench to ‘triple team the tall one’. Tess kept the pressure on, playing some great defence and made a beautiful layup with

a tidy assisting pass from Gabby. In the second half the team continued to run the court, with some awesome teamwork and movement. They passed it around seamlessly, sharing the shots with Shani and Ellie finishing skilfully with soft shots. Though the win was never in doubt, the girls were good sports throughout the game, leaving space for their oppo-nents to get in on some of the play. HT: 32 – 8 FT: 62 – 14

Loving your work ladies, thanks to POD and Nic for their help. Bring on September, off we go to State!

Senior Girls Basketball win at Regionals

A small act of kindnessOn Monday night an iPad was handed into the office by Tahlia Hurley. She found it outside sitting on a post on her way home and brought it back in. There was no way to find out who’s it was. The next morning the iPad beeped with ‘find my iPad’ and about 15 mins later a man came in to see if it was here.He was extremely relieved as he was from Melbourne and working in Wang. He said it had a lot of information on it that he desperately needed. He was very grateful and gave Tahlia some money as a thank you for handing in the iPad.

On Friday the 22nd of June, the Year 7 and 8 girls footy team headed to Wodonga for the local carnival where we would play against other schools from our area. We arrived at the carnival in the freezing cold and come together as a team to play 4 fantastic games of footy! Our first game was against Cathedral College, it was a rough start but as we started to get into the swing of things we became more confident in our game, but unfortunately it was too late. Our next game didn’t end much differently but we regrouped after two tuff losses and come out firing in our next game against Wodonga Middle Years Felltimber,

and we killed it! It was by far the best game for the day! We were guttered that we wouldn’t make it to the final but come out in our final game against Wodonga Middle Years Huon playing for each other, but they were by far the best team we had played, they were just stronger than us, but we finished together! Although we only won 1 game it shaped into an amazing day out! A huge thanks to Miss. Barnewell for coach-ing us, Nick for helping us out on the day, Billie Stemmer and Jarrah Pellegrino for being our water girls and Ella Corrigan and Bonnie Shanley for supporting and umpiring us. We had a great time and can’t wait to do it again!

Rutvik and Maddy have been selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)! Wellbeing at GalenThere may be times when you and your family have an issue that is impacting on your schooling which needs sensitive and confidential attention. It might be a health, family or personal problem. Either way, at Galen we have Wellbeing Counsellors who can provide professional support to you. This can be an alternative to the Homeroom teacher or Wellbeing Leader (PWL) and a Learning Leader (LL) (who would gener-ally be the people you first approach about school concerns).

Exploring the issue with one of us might help you to find the right solution to your situation. We can confidentially chat in the privacy of our wellbeing rooms in the Wellbeing Centre. We can support you and your family in a variety of ways in-cluding making an appointment with other community services that specialise in your particular area of concern.

Please remember, we welcome you and your family to our school. We care about you and there is always someone here at Galen to provide you with wellbeing support.

Our Wellbeing Team includes Kate Meehan - Counsellor, Luke Ahrens - Psychologist, Lisa Power - School Counsellor/Provi-sional Psychologist, Therese Rodway - Counsellor, and Katrina Watts - Social Worker.

Please ensure that you contact a member of our team for whatever support or assistance you may need. You may also find some of the grief related inserts in this issue newsletter to be helpful.
