MAG So our final term of 2019 begins and wow is it going fast! Students in MAG are looking forward to all the exciting events happening this term. The class is working hard on producing all their arts and crafts for sale on Market Day in Week 6. We are also looking forward to the Adventure Day in Week 8. Everyone has been working hard to achieve their IEP goals and we are having small successes along the way which is pleasing to see. Exciting times for our year 12 boys Adam and Moses who were fantastic at the whole school graduation night at Joondalup Resort. We are all so proud of the way they joined in the ceremonies and got up on stage to receive their graduation certificates. We are also enormously proud of Adam who received the School Endeavour Award for a student who has overcome challenges to succeed. Well done Adam!! This term in Community Access we will be extending our community experiences and travel training to include interconnecting bus and train journeys to places like IKEA and Leederville. We look forward to exploring more of Perth. Our project for Gardening is under way with a wheelchair scarecrow under construction to be entered into the Wanneroo Show’s School Garden Competition. The scarecrow will show the diversity both culturally and educationally across our school. Mrs Hull is helping us with our creation. The final ASDAN modules will be externally moderated in the next weeks which will bring to a completion all the hard work the students and staff have put into this program in 2019. Well done MAG! So we look forward to the rest of the term and keep striving hard to achieve our personal and class goals.

Year 7-1 Hello! Welcome to Term 4! Can you believe the year is almost over! It’s certainly set to be a very busy

term with lots going on and a great deal still yet to come. We had an awesome excursion to

Scitech in week 5. The day started with some time to look at the exhibits Scitech has to offer,

followed by a show in the planetarium learning about the discovery of new planets and then an

interactive show about energy. It was a fantastic show that had everyone engaged and

laughing out loud. It was so much fun! Everyone looked like they were having a great time

participating in the different activities, lots of laughs and smiles all round! We finished the day

with another look around Scitech and their BHP Exhibition Gallery: Science Fiction Science

Future exhibit. We made sure to take lots of photos and used them to write about the day back

at school. I was really impressed with the effort everyone put in to writing their excursion

recount.

I am pleased to say that everyone has been working extremely hard in the classroom. The progress individual students have been making towards their IEP goals is super impressive. In D & T they have been busy making a range of items to sell for Market Day. I can’t wait to see them! We have also been busy in the classroom experimenting with cement to make photo holders and garden decorations. It is looking set to be another great event so it would be lovely to see you there on Thursday the 21

st of November.

That’s all from me for me but as always please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or your

child’s school planner! It’s always great to hear from you!

Year 7-2 The students in 7-2 have had an awesome start to Term Four. In Firetech, we have been using iPads to control and program sphero robots. We also used Canon cameras, which was interesting as we changed the settings to see what the pictures would look like. In cooking, we have made chicken stir fry, chow mein, chocolate cake in a cup, fish and chips, gluten free carbonara, spinach and feta gozleme, hoi sin chicken lettuce cups, waffles, market day biscuits, ham and cheese toasties and banana smoothies. In D&T, we have done sanding of key chains and made a jewellery box. We are also working on making incense holders to sell at Market Day. In class we have been creating some craft to sell at Market Day. We have made Christmas cards, Christmas tags and our own baubles. In PE, we practised soccer, basketball and bike riding skills. Some of our students went on an excursion to play soccer against other schools. We went to Forrestfield to Hartfield park. We were lucky to get lunch orders from a special canteen set up for us. We played four games. It was a hot and fun day. The other students had a fun day at school and going to the Mental Health awareness stalls. We are excited for upcoming events including our excursion to Scitech, Market Day, creating another iMovie for our assembly item and Year 7 Adventure Day.

Year 8-1 We have had a great term so far! We are working towards our school values of safe, respectful and responsible, this is reflected in how many raffle tickets and awards we are getting. We are enjoying our swimming lessons again. In cooking we are continuing to make yummy food. Sometimes we eat our food and sometimes we take it home to share with our families. Dance is always full of fun and laughter. In Design and technology, we follow the safety rules and have created awesome items to take home and to sell at Market Day. It has been a busy term preparing for Market Day, we are learning new skills, learning new words when following instructions, following step by step processes and working in groups. We are very excited to show of our works of art. We are looking forward to the rest of the term. Ms Carlyon, Mrs O'Rourke, Mrs M, Mrs Cotton, Mrs Clarke

Year 8-2 The students in 8-2 have had a great start to Term 4. In sport the class has returned to swimming this term and they are all working well for their teachers.

In Science students have been learning about the three main types of rocks and how they are formed. The whole class have been looking forward to our excursion this week to Yanchep National Park and the crystal caves which will complement their learning in this topic.

In HASS we have been learning about laws and rules and why it is important to have them. We have also been learning about the consequences of not following these rules and laws. In health we have been learning about sleep hygiene and how good sleep habits can benefit us all in our daily lives. We have also been very busy getting ready for the annual Market Day taking place next week and the students are looking forward to presenting their hard work in the day!

Year 8-3 Wow, what a first few weeks back. The end of last term had us going to Fremantle on a class excursion to the Maritime Museum. We attended the Planet Shark exhibition and learnt many facts about sharks! We enjoyed Planet Shark so much that we’ve decided to do our assembly item about it. As a class, we’ve put together a PowerPoint presentation, including cool animations, facts, photos and great slide transitions. We were excited to deliver this in Assembly in Week 4. This term we’re enjoying swimming in the warmer weather as well as learning about the different types of energies in Science. We’ve started using real money in maths to purchase items from the catalogue and working out the change we would receive. We’ve loved using Minecraft Education in Technologies and have started our own individual walk through the Three Little Pigs fairy-tale. It’s so much fun! Actually, we’re loving Minecraft so much, we’re trying to work out how we can use it in every subject. The staff need more practice though!

Year 9-1 It has been a quick and exciting start to Term 4 – the year is almost over! There are so many

exciting things happening this term, some of which we have already done. Our class went to

Edith Cowan University for an excursion, we have been experimenting with robots and

photography in Firetech, and we have been busily preparing for Market Day.

During the first week of Term 4, we joined some of the Year 7 and 8 students to go on an

excursion to Edith Cowan University. We got to work with some of the Exercise and Sports

Science students. It was so much fun because we got to participate in a number of different

exercise and sporting activities. There were basketball games, soccer games, baseball games,

boxing, and fitness; just to name a few. We were very lucky to have so many Edith Cowan

University Students helping us out on the day, they made it so much fun!

We all had a favourite activity on the day, but Shaneece absolutely loved the boxing, and Jordan

loved doing weights. He says he wants to do them at school and become “ripped’.

Firetech, as usual, has been great fun! We did a photography session where we took turns

taking photos of each other using the different lights from robots and learning new angles. We

had so many pictures that we all took that day, especially close ups of our faces, and different

objects.

Soon, we have our annual Market Day and we are very excited. We have been busy making

some special goodies over the term, and hope you can come and see our creations on

Thursday 21st of November.

Year 9-2 A quick introduction is in order, my name is Simon Malloy and I have had the great honour of replacing the irreplaceable Mrs Egan for Term 4. A big thank you to the wonderful staff and the very welcoming students for making this transition not only an easy one, but a pleasurable one. We started the term off with an excursion to the Hills Soccer Carnival. Here the students not only showed their athletic prowess, but also their kind and caring nature. They showed their sportsmanship by making sure that every member on both teams had a chance to participate, caring more about everyone having a nice time over winning. A very impressive effort! It has been a busy term. In Science we have been learning about tectonic plates. In Health the students have become relationship detectives. Everyone has enjoyed and become very competitive playing Kahoot quizzes. In HASS we have learnt about the economy and how our actions affect the world around us, for example, with facts such as it takes 2700 litres of water to make one T-shirt. The students have also been expressing their artistic side in the creation of some wonderful pendants and notebooks. These amazing products will be debuting at the Belridge Market Day on 21

st November.

Thanks to everyone for making this such a great term. Keep up the fantastic work 9.2!

Lego Club

Lego What an Amazing Term 4 we have had in Lego Club. Lego club has again been busy with many students coming in and building sets and using the free play area. We have been especially impressed with students demonstrating our school values being Respectful, Responsible and Safe whilst in LEGO club with students sharing, using their manners and working together. We have just finished our latest LEGO club competition where students were asked to “build your own house or vehicle to be part of our LEGO village”. Students used their LEGO master builder skills to create their competition entries and the results were fantastic.

Health and Wellbeing Day October is Mental Health Month, and we wanted to share the focus of mental and physical health, emphasising that how we live, learn, work and play are all contributing factors which impact our mental wellbeing. On the 17

th October, Belridge Secondary College

and Belridge Secondary ESC held a Health and Wellbeing Day. Our Student Councillors have been working hard all of Term 3, to plan and prepare for the Wellbeing day. We held a student-led tent and encouraged everyone to participate in writing on the Gratitude Tree, and making their own Self Regulation chatterbox and Self Regulation Strategy Spinner.

Special visits from different services within the community were there and demonstrations

and activities were held throughout the day. All the students (and staff) had a wonderful time.

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2019!

Year 10-1 It has been a busy start to the term with a fantastic experience going to Ern Halliday with DFES. The students learned how to use a map and compass rose to navigate around the grounds of Ern Halliday to locate different items, they also used their speaking and listening skills to communicate via the radio and save the lost pilot. Our Community Access excursion to Neil Hawkins, we learned the Lake Joondalup region is part of Mooro country and is an important place for indigenous people. It was a great hunting ground for water birds and turtles. Many great feasts took place on its banks. It is a very spiritual place due to its connection with the dreamtime.

.

Seems hard to believe only 5 weeks until the end of term. We look forward to more exciting learning activities in and out of the classroom before the end of Term 4. Please remember to check emails and diaries every day for important news.

Year 10-2 Term Four has got off to a great start, with students working hard across all learning areas! In Mathematics, the students have been learning about perimeter, area and volume. In English, as well as daily spelling activities, they have been studying poetry. The students have written a variety of poems, including limerick, acrostic and clerihew. On Fridays, we discuss what has been in the news over the past week, and watch the Behind the News (BTN) television program to catch up on anything we’ve missed. Members of the class recently participated in the Hills Soccer Carnival in Lesmurdie. It was fabulous to see everyone participating in games of soccer against other schools, encouraging players from all teams, and enjoying themselves! During the year in Agri-Foods, the students propagated a range of succulents and herbs, and then transplanted them into pots. They are now ready to go on sale at Market Day next Thursday, November 21

st - we hope to see you there!

As part of our Community Access program, the students recently visited Neil Hawkins Park in Joondalup, finding out more about Lake Joondalup and the surrounding bushland. As part of our DFES program, the group recently spent a wonderful morning at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp. The students worked together as a team, finding clues to enable them to discover the location of a “Lost Pilot”. Enjoy the remainder of the year everyone!

Year 11-1 With the end of the year fast approaching, this is a great opportunity to share some of the exciting and interesting things that class 11-1 have been doing this term. In Week Two, students went on a two-day camp to Ern Halliday as part of their DFES Cadet course. It is fair to say, that all students had a fantastic time and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Students engaged in so many different activities, including; the Lost Pilot search and rescue, abseiling & the Flying Fox, archery, the big swing, kite making, mini golf, and as if this wasn’t enough, this was all capped off with pizzas at Leap Frogs. I can only imagine that students slept well that Friday night; I know the staff did! I would just like to add a big thank you to all the staff that were involved in making this camp so successful and for going above and beyond to make the whole experience an enjoyable one. Just as students were recovering from camp, they were back in action for DFES by going to Mullaloo Beach with Earth Assist – Rio Tinto, to participate in a debris collection. This was a fabulous morning in the sunshine where students were to search for debris and rubbish on one of Perth’s most popular beaches. It was amazing to see just how much plastic, rubbish and random items can be found amongst the sand and seaweed. It was a timely reminder of how important correct disposal of waste is, and how vital ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ is to sustaining our planet. This morning activity was then followed up by an incursion where students took part in a Butterfly Box Program. Students learnt all about the life-cycle of a caterpillar and how it transforms into a butterfly. We now have in our classroom, a Butterfly Box with caterpillars that we are to look after and observe. All going well, we will see their transformation into beautiful butterflies that we can release into our fabulous sensory garden. We cannot wait to see nature at it’s very best! Workplace Learning (WPL) has continued this term with all students working extremely hard at their work places. They are all showing maturity and professional ethics which has been recognised by their employers and reflexed in their feedback. Keep up the great work team! In class, students have completed all their ASDAN courses and they are ready for external moderation. Students have also been working through their IEP goals. Assessments in English, Maths and Health will be conducted over the next

two weeks in preparation for their reports. On top of all this, we have a number of exciting days and events coming up this term. Students are in the process of making and creating gifts for the Market Day on 21st November. Thus far, we have made ‘Spa-in-a-Jar’, ‘Lolly-Pop Cards’, ‘Christmas Frames’ and ‘2020 Calendars’. We do intend to have some more goodies made and ready for sale, so you will need to come along and check out our amazing stall. For other events, class 11-1 have an excursion to Latitude coming up in week seven (paperwork and details of this outing will be sent out shortly via your child’s dairy), and we also have water skiing booked in for Monday 16th December as an end of year celebration. So as you can see, it has been a busy start to the final term of the year and we have plenty to look forward to in the next six weeks.

Mr Tom Cann Year 11-1 Teacher

November 2019

Year 11-2 Though the year is coming to an end, it still is a very busy time for the class.

Year 11-2 students have had a fantastic time attending the Year 11 camp at Ern Halliday. Some of the activities included, archery, flying fox, kite making and Lost Pilot. On the second day the students participated in mini golf and had the pleasure of enjoying pizza for lunch. It was a rewarding time staying overnight for many of the students as some had not experienced an overnight camp before. DFES have given Year 11 students the opportunity to monitor butterflies in classroom. Once grown, they will be set free to fly into the big wide world.

Market Day preparations are in full swing. The students are looking forward to assisting the aged from Mercy Care and to help out where needed.

Some of the students have been attending the gym at Duncraig Leisure Centre every Friday for an hour. They have thrived in a positive and safe environment. It certainly is the highlight of the week for them.

Year 12-1 The first five weeks of Term Four have been very eventful for the students in 12-1. All students have now successfully completed their ASDAN modules however, they continue to reinforce the skills learnt in all modules. The students are working hard in ‘Coffee Club’ on Wednesdays to produce the coffee which is very popular and much requested by the staff. The class has been engaging in lessons and role plays to further enhance their personal safety when out in the community and accessing the public transport system. They are also working on their items which the will be for sale on Market Day on 21st November in Week 6. One of the main highlights of the year for our students (and their families) was the recent Graduation Ceremony at the Joondalup Resort during Week Two. What a joyous and memorable occasion! Two students from 12-1 were the proud winners of awards on the night. Congratulations go to Elle Holmes who received ‘The Caltex Best All-rounder Award’ and Melissa Tredoux who received ‘The North Metropolitan Education Region Commitment to Excellence Award’. Congratulations must also go to Jack Arrah who recently represented Australia at the INSA Global Games in Tai Kwan Do, in Brisbane in October. Jack is currently ranked 6th in the world in his category. Well done Jack! The next five weeks will be the final weeks of school for the students of 12-1. As a class we move forward with a sense of satisfaction and completion but mostly tremendous excitement for the future and an enjoyable life beyond school for our very treasured students in 12-1. A big thank you and much appreciation to all families for their support and ongoing communication regarding our students.

Year 12-2

The highlight for 12-2 this term has been the Graduation Ceremony. The ceremony was held on the evening of Thursday 24

th October at Joondalup Resort. Our students had prepared earlier in

the week by attending a practice excursion in the ballroom. All students looked very smart and participated in the Ceremony with a mature and positive attitude. Congratulations to all the students on receiving their graduation folders and to the Belridge Secondary ESC students who received special awards. The class has also begun preparing for Market Day where 12-2 will run the café. The class has researched and ordered Bio Cups to serve espresso coffee and have planned the morning tea plate menu. Students have written lists and completed shopping trips to purchase the required ingredients are in the process of preparing the food. During DFES, the class have been participating in cycling lessons both on campus and at Neil Hawkins and Mullaloo Beach Park. The students have increased their confidence and bike riding skills whilst enjoying the physical activity with their peers. These lesson have been in preparation for the DFES camp being held at Ern Halliday at the end of this week in which 12-2 students will participate in a Coastal Cycling activity with Ern Halliday trainers.
