MAG 1 The students in MAG 1 have had an awesome start to Term Three. We have been creating some crafts for Market Day this term in art. We have made coasters by dipping tiles in water with nail polish sitting at the top of the water. This creates a colourful swirl effect. We are adding lots of craft and paintings to the classroom wall for our seasons and garden classroom theme. For Horticulture with Mrs Vander Loop the students have been planting, watering and weeding. The students loved tasting the capsicums and cherry tomatoes that they picked from the garden. They have continued painting the mural on the wall and some posts in the garden. In Home Economics the students have made banana and chocolate chip muffins, mini pizzas, stuffed rolls with vegetables and banana pancakes. In Music they have continued to play multiple instruments, sing into microphones and annotate music for different instruments. They have particularly enjoyed suggesting their favourite songs for the class to dance to. All the students have been enthusiastic in learning new skills this term during swimming lessons. Cameron and Massimo have been practising floating, survival stroke, diving under the water to get the pool toys and swimming with a pool noodle in the deep end of the pool. Caitlin has been improving her floating skills and leg strength by floating and running in the whirlpool. All students have all been practising their throwing, catching and splashing when in the whirlpool. We have been riding the school bikes when the weather has been good. When it is raining, we enjoy dancing to ‘Just Dance’ videos on YouTube and completing indoor games like throwing and catching.

MAG 2 For ASDAN Out in the Community this term the class on a weekly basis has continued to catch the bus to Joondalup Shopping Centre using their smartrider to Tag on and Tag off . On occasions we have worn our ponchos and taken our umbrellas when rain has been forecast. At the Joondalup shops the students have been practicing using the lift and escalator with great success which has assisted us in getting to and from the platform at Joondalup train station when we catch the train to Butler. The train trip has been very exciting with lots of new skills to learn. The students are enthusiastic about returning to High Flyers this term and extending their skills on the trampolines. When the weather is nice we take the opportunity to get out on the bikes and scooters. The students are using both pools at HBF Arena and making great progress with their swimming skills to complete their ASDAN module Water Skills. In cooking the students have been trying new recipes such as pancakes with bananas, chocolate chip biscuits and a savoury stuffed roll full of vegetables and cheese. YUM! Once again our class has continued to make fantastic progress with their communication, social and independence skills when working towards achieving their own personal goals. Keep up the great work!

Year 7-1 Hello everyone! Welcome to Semester Two! It sounds like everyone had a fantastic break and managed to stay warm and dry! It was so great to catch up with you during recent IEP meetings. I love hearing from you and sharing all the wonderful progress our students are making. We’re back in to the swing of things here and all work programs are well underway. In English students have been working super hard on the Multilit program as well as their phonics, spelling, writing and reading activities. I am so pleased with all the progress everyone is making and seeing everyone’s confidence improve. All students are giving new things a try and attempting to spell trickier words and play more challenging games. In Maths students are working hard to develop their number sense skills and practise working with time and money. We’ve had a great time setting up a class shop, sticking price tags on different items and practising buying and selling. We have been enjoying looking at Physical Sciences in Science this term. So far we’ve discovered some really interesting facts about energy including electricity and experimenting with materials that act as electrical insulators and conductors. As part of Health we have been continuing to work on protective behaviours, personal hygiene and social skills. We have also managed to escape the wet weather and play soccer during sport. That’s all from me for now! As always please do not hesitate to contact me via your child’s school planner or email on [email protected] . Stay warm and dry!

August 2018

Year 7-2 Welcome back to Term Three! We have had a quick start to the term, with week 5 already here. We have a very busy and exciting term ahead of us. We have already done some really fun activities in all subject areas - especially cooking and D&T.

In cooking, we have made some delicious meals. One of our favourites was making pancakes and smoothies. It was quite tricky trying to flip the pancakes while making them, but we all managed just fine. We tried to make them as big as we could – some close to the size of our face! It was definitely a fun lesson, and we are looking forward to making them at home too.

In D&T we have been making a number of different items, some to sell at Market Day coming up in Term 4. We have made some colourful keyrings and even a mini game. We were very excited about these, and they were fun to play with. You had to try and get the little balls in the mini holes poked into the bottom of the box. It was super tricky, and we plan on making even harder ones’ next time, so we can sell them at Market Day.

In class, we have been working hard on our Safe, Respectful, and Responsible behaviours. It was a whole school activity to each create a poster to submit for a student and staff vote. We had to design a poster that showed these behaviours and how we think our school could best show this. There were so many fantastic ideas from all the students in the school, and it was very hard to vote for a winner. We can’t wait to see what the end poster for our school will look like.

Looking forward to the rest of term 3!

Year 7-3 Last Term the students participated in an Ancient Roman feast! Staff and students were very proud of their efforts and wish to share some of the photos from the happy day with the wider school community.

The students dressed up in togas and laurel wreaths and listened to Roman music. They ate bread and olive oil, pork sausages, chicken, eggs, carrots, olives, strawberries, cheese, dates and a special Roman style shortbread made by the students.

The class invited other teachers and the deputies to celebrate with us including Miss Rennie, Miss Hutchings Mrs Hughes and Mr Egan who came in as our ‘King’.

On the day, Theo liked eating sausages. Evan was grateful that we didn’t role play being captured and enslaved! He also enjoyed eating and cooking the sausages with his classmates. Kade had a great time dressing up and thought the food was wonderful. Jacob thought that cooking the sausages was almost as much fun as eating them. He was also pleasantly surprised by how delicious dates taste! Josh decided that the biscuits we made were too dry, but he enjoyed eating them after all. Hamish wondered why the food was taking so long to cook and why didn’t Romans have Tomato Sauce? Blake was away on the day however he enjoyed looking at the photos and hearing about the activities from his classmates.

This term 7.3 welcomed three new staff members being, Ms. Samarin, Mr. Martinez and Mrs. Cook. The students and staff have been very welcoming and the new staff are thrilled to be part of such a wonderful classroom and a fantastic school environment.

In Home Economics the students have been busy extending their cooking skills by preparing delicious treats for a Morning Tea that they will be hosting for some special visitors. The staff have been lucky to sample some of their cooking!

In HASS the class has been incorporating their understanding of Economics and Business into their responsibilities for Market Day. The students are very excited to be learning about what is required to run a small business. We have focused on; how to select and manufacture goods; what is required to supply a service; how many staff members are required to fill each role; break times; salary etc.

A big congratulation to the staff and students

of 7.3 for a brilliant start to Term 3!

Year 8-1

Well the class has had a great start to the 3

rd Term and I can’t believe we are half way through

it already. We have returned to swimming this term and the students have been enjoying it. In HASS we have been looking at needs and wants and understanding the difference between them. We will begin looking at goods and services over the last few weeks. In Science the students have enjoyed looking at energy and particularly Potential and Kinetic Energy. We have explored Pendulums, sling shots with elastic bands and paper planes. We will be consolidating some of the new information on August 22nd with our excursion to the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin. In Design and Technology the students have been making items for our market day in November and they will be making more items in class for the day. Below are some photos of the students taking part in a number of different activities.

Year 8-2 We have had an exciting start to Term Three. All the students worked hard on a dance routine which we performed at the middle school assembly as well as at Butler College in front of so many other fantastic schools. The students from 8-2 put on a polished and professional demonstration of their dance skills. We are also thrilled to be swimming again this term as swimming provides us with good exercise and contributes to a healthy lifestyle. We are creating pieces in D&T for our Market Day stall. Currently during science, the students are studying rocks and minerals and in HASS we are learning about landforms in Geography. We have looked at different types of rocks and minerals and where they fit into the rock cycle, this also helps us to identify how landforms are created. The library is always a popular time of the week with lots of things to do such as looking at the new displays and books to read.

Year 9-1 This term has been an exciting time for the 9-1 students and staff. In Science we have been experimenting and learning about Physical movement and also some Chemical reactions. The students have found this to be a lot of fun and very interesting. Each student is the leader of an experiment, involving being responsible for the equipment required, carrying out the experiment and leading the class in writing up the experiment. This is a challenge for many, as standing in front of their peers and staff can be daunting, but they have all rose to the challenge admirably. The students all enjoyed Mr Pantelis carrying out his demonstration experiment, using the chemical reaction between vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to blow up a balloon. We are planning a visit to SciTech to solidify our physical and Chemical science in the next few weeks. We have already began our Market day activities, which is enabling the students to show off their craft skills, ideas, creativity and enjoy some social time whilst working! In and around school we are emphasising the students sense of responsibility and this is helping them be more organised and self reliant, which will assist them in the coming years in upper school.

Year 9-2 What is a biome? Why do animals become endangered? What regions of WA do we grow different foods? How is this affected by climate and the availability of water? Why are bees so important? What happens in other parts of Australia and the world? - These are just some of the questions being pondered by Year 9-2 in Humanities and the Environment and English this term. We are conducting research, completing reading activities and watching videos to help us answer these questions. We have also been learning about atoms, chemical reactions and will be doing some kitchen chemistry in Science as well as in our Health lessons looking at the energy our bodies need and the foods that help us maintain good health. As part of our Physical Education program this term we are practising for the athletics carnival and we are also going bowling at Zone Bowling in Joondalup for five weeks. We have 10 champion bowlers in our class. They all score much higher than their teachers do when they play! We have taken some photos of our champions to show you. Strikes and spares are a common occurrence! Our class needs old picture frames for a project

we are doing for market day. Any size frame,

with or without the glass. If you have please

drop them off at our classroom ESC1.

From the Chaplain

I’m Merrilee Wong, the new school Chaplain for Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre. My primary role is to build relationships, offer care and support to the individual needs of the students and to the wider needs of the school. I find my previous volunteer and work experience has helped prepare me for my role as a Chaplain. I completed my studies in Psychology and Counselling at the end of last year and have had experience working with teenagers in community development programs. I have also worked as a Disability support worker, which at times was challenging, but overall found it to be extremely rewarding. We have just started a social club that runs every Monday during lunch, open to any students who are interested in joining. The program is targeted specifically for students who struggle to form friendships, or who tend to sit alone during break times. We’ll be running different fun activities each week, where the aim is to get conversation going around the importance of friendships and how to be a friend to others. I look forward to learning and growing personally and professionally in my role as the

Chaplain and I am excited to be able to work alongside the students and staff of

Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre.

Year 10-1 We’re back for Term Three and moving forward! It has been an exciting start to Term Three with the students commencing their 5-week

Thursday Work Place Learning (WPL). Students have been enthusiastically undertaking their

work roles at Coles (Joondalup and Beldon), Bunnings and the Post Office. They have been

learning about the importance of: getting to work on time, wearing appropriate clothing,

personal grooming and hygiene and safety in the workplace.

We also had a fantastic excursion to Fremantle Maritime Museum and Shipwreck Museum. We

participated in the Horrible Histories Pirate activities and searched for museum artefacts that

help retell the past. It was a great day!

Parents, families and carers, thank you for your unwavering help and support. Please remember to keep checking the diary for news on what the class is doing and our

upcoming Community Access excursions.

Year 10-2 Semester Two has got off to a great start for the staff and students in our room, with everyone working well across all areas of the curriculum. Mr Taylor, Ms Taylor and I have joined existing room team members, Mrs Speed and Mrs O’Rourke, and have been made to feel very welcome by everyone. This term the students have been visiting places of interest as part of their Community Access programme. They have visited Elizabeth Quay, WA Shipwrecks Museum, The Perth Mint, and are due to visit Kings Park very soon. A highlight of the term so far, was our trip to Optus Stadium, where we were given a wonderful tour by our guide, Bruce. The students were shown the changing rooms used by the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles, as well as technical areas, corporate boxes, and many other facilities. Thank you to all parents and carers who have attended, or are about to attend IEP meetings,

your input is invaluable, and much appreciated.

Year 11-1 It’s been a fast and furious start to Semester Two for class 11-1. With students well rested following their middle year break they have begun the new term extremely well. Students have continued where they left off last term by working hard through their classroom subjects such as English and Maths. In recent weeks, students have been challenged with a variety of different assessment pieces. I’m pleased to say that all students have completed this work to a pleasing standard. In English, reading and comprehension has been a focus for all students with them reading a range of different text and then extracting key information from it to then answer set questions. For Maths the use of the Maths Cards and Studyladder has continued with a focus on skip counting. Due to other curriculum requirements and the Whole School Sports Carnival, Community Access will commence week eight and documentation regarding those excursions will be sent out accordingly via your child’s diary. Despite not going out on Community Access yet this term, we have been out to Ern Halliday where the students participated in a team building activity called the Big Swing. We also have two excursions for our Transport & Logistics course to Fremantle Port (week six) and to REMIDA Warehouse (week nine and ten). Workplace Learning (WPL) has continued with many students going to new places of work. Once again students have eased into their roles and duties with professionalism and have already received great feedback from staff. Over the next few weeks there will be a push to get some programs near to completion in preparation for the start of Term Four including Transport & Logistics, ASDAN – Workright and Meal Preparation. A reminder for parents that the Belridge Whole School Athletics Carnival is coming up in week 7 (Friday 31st August 2018) where our students are invited and encouraged to participate in what is always a great and successful day for the entire school.

Student photos will be taken on Tuesday 21st

August rather than Wednesday 15th August due to students being in WPL clothing/uniform. Thank you to all parents that I have met for this semesters Individual Education Plan (IEP) meeting. It was fantastic to check in with you and to review your child’s progress and what we will be working on over the next 12 weeks. So once again it has been another busy few

weeks for class 11-1. Keep up the great work

everyone!

Year 11-2 Hello from 11-2 The 11-2 Term planner is filled with exciting educational excursions and incursions. Thank you to families for returning permission notes promptly. Throughout the term students will be engaged in purposeful and meaningful experiences in the community. They have started volunteering for Coastal Care at Mullaloo beach. In small groups they complete tasks from start to finish whilst, helping to preserve our wonderful coastline. The environmental learning theme for Community Access supports student’s development in ASDAN Citizenship and ASDAN Volunteer Short Course. They have had their first visit to the Marine Discovery Centre and to AQWA to develop an appreciation of WA natural coastline and an understanding behind the need for volunteer-based work.

On the 2nd

of August, Sahara Scaddan from Volunteer W.A. visited our classroom to speak about her volunteering experience. She delivered a ‘Step into Volunteering’ community workshop and gave each student an information pack. Here is a snap shot of photographs that highlight some of the learning experiences.

Ben delivered a PowerPoint presentation at our recent Upper School Assembly. He shared with his peers his workplace learning experiences in the Building and Construction industry. Guided by photographs, Ben spoke clearly and confidently. Well done Ben!

Mrs Kelsey Collins Year 11-2 Teacher

Before Sahara arrived the students created questions to find out about Volunteering.

They practiced asking questions.

They were given information packs to take home.

Year 12-1 12-1 have had a busy start to the term finishing off our Asdan Modules for Year 12 Moderation next month. The students have also been completing their own module reviews and next steps, which involves beginning to think about their transition from school. They will start to prepare Resumes and Communication booklets about themselves to help with this transition. The students looked very smart for the Graduation photos which were taken earlier this term in preparation for the Graduation night in October. The class have enjoyed listening to each other’s smartboard presentations about their Favourite Media Personality. We learnt about famous sportsmen , singers and actors, including Lewis Hamilton, Tim Cahill, Justin Langer, Jennifer Lawrence and Chad Boseman. All students showed a huge improvement in their confidence and communication skills. In Meal Preparation and Cooking we have been focussing on Serving and Cleaning in recent weeks. They all have duties and are doing this well as a team to get the jobs done quickly.

Year 12-2

12-2 have had a very busy start to Term Three. The class has been working hard to complete their ASDAN Towards Independence Money Progression Course. As part of this course, the students were required to form small groups and organise three leisure activities. They needed to work within a set budget, plan the transport and make the booking. The class then participated in the three leisure activities which were indoor mini golf at Chillisaurus, Zone Bowling and a day in Fremantle visiting the prison, Cicerellos for fish and chips and the Shipwreck museum. The class also organised a BBQ Fundraiser as part of their DFES Community Engagement. They raised $182 which they will present to Sue Turner of Blue Gum Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation next week. Thank you to all who purchased a sausage sizzle. The students also had their official graduation photos taken in preparation for next term’s events. All students looked amazing in their graduation attire and we look forward to seeing these photos on the night.

Lego Club Lego club has been extremely busy recently, the students have been busy building and creating both sets and their own creations. Utah finished building the Star Wars Death Star, which has been a huge hit with the students, or should I say the Jedi and the Dark side ! There has been many battles raging, prisoners captured and escapes ! Listening to the stories and conversations between the characters has been very enlightening, the creativity and imagination has been wonderful. The interactions and sharing of items is really lovely to see, the motorised train set has been a hit also, with lots of unloading and loading of materials by the crane on the way round the tracks. Students throughout the whole school were invited to enter a Lego Colouring competition, and we were overwhelmed with entries, showing a lot of skills, imagination and colour choices. The entries have been judged and the winners were Sarah Eiffler, Maddison Sharp, Jessica Goldman and Emily Pickles. Each winner received a Lego set, Well done to all the winners !

Workplace Learning

Term Three has been very busy already, with students in Year 11 and 12 consolidating their work skill sets. Some students have changed to a new work site, especially the Year 12 students who are now looking to work towards their transition from school at the end of the year. Other students are now having the confidence to travel independently and build on new skill sets. It is really exciting to watch the growth of all the students as they start seeing the value of working in the wider community. We have been very excited to have two Year 11 students, Utah Kendall and Bailey Cook gain a School Based Traineeship at Red Rooster this term. The students are both learning on the job and will gain a Certificate II in Retail as well as getting paid to learn the skills needed to work in a fast food outlet. Well done to both students. Our Year 10 students are having their first taste of work this term with 10-1 currently in their last week of a five week practice. The 10-2 students will commence each Thursday in week 6 until the end of the term. I must commend the 10-1 class for all being so well prepared each week and you have all started with a positive attitude and are really doing well. Our students at TAFE are also progressing well and as some courses are finishing at the end of the term they are very busy getting all the assessments completed. Our Agrifoods and Transport and Logistics students are also working well and learning many new skills. We are currently looking at which Year 10 students may be able to apply for VET profile courses in 2019. There are prerequisites for students to apply, so we will inform parents if your child is going to be offered an opportunity to attend off campus in 2019. Parents will need to be able to drop off and collect their students from TAFE at the relevant campus for students to be able to attend. Our Year 12 students will be finishing their ASDAN programs very shortly ready for the external moderation in Week 9. Year 10 and 11 programs will be moderated in November so the students are all busy working on those learning areas and using their new understanding to practical purposes on and off campus. Thank you to all the families who support our VET programs here at Belridge Secondary ESC, we appreciate your support to help the students have the most extensive opportunities to learn and develop in their progression towards independence for the future.

Going for a walk to the park is a simple pleasure everyone should be able to enjoy. A program providing this simple pleasure for those at MercyCare’s Residential Aged Care facility is also providing Education Support students with a learning opportunity. Year 11 Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre students spend an hour a week interacting with the elderly residents at MercyCare’s Joondalup Residential Aged Care facility as part of an accredited course that encourages them to help other people. The students have done a number of activities with the residents, including playing board games together and even running a bingo event for them. When the weather is good, they head outside for a walk to a nearby park. Carers at the centre say the residents enjoy the interaction and having the extra hands, means that more residents can enjoy the fresh air. Our Joondalup Residential Aged Care facility is situated on the edge of Lake Joondalup nature reserve. It offers residents and their families the chance to choose between restful peace and quiet or lively and active engagement with the wider community.
