Physical Activity forOlder Adults

Many people decrease theirexercise as they age, butcontinuing to exercise has definitebenefits for older people. Being fitis important to everyone.Flexibility and stretching, whichhelp provide a full range ofmotion for muscles and joints, can help you function better.Everyday tasks that are difficult, such as getting up, walking, tyingshoelaces or reaching for a shelf, may become easier. When youstay flexible, you also keep a morenatural walking pattern anddecrease your chance of falling. Most flexibility that is seeminglylost through aging is caused notonly by aging but also byinactivity or lack of movement.Aerobic exercise strengthens theheart and reduces the risk ofcoronary artery disease. It can alsoincrease the amount of sleep youget at night and may reduce thetime it takes to fall asleep.

Strengthening exercises canhelp you maintain your muscle, strengthen bones, and protectknees and other joints. These

exercises may include resistancetraining, such as lifting weights, and weight-bearing, such aswalking, jogging or dancing.

Your physical activity does nothave to be strenuous. Older adultscan gain significant healthbenefits with a moderate amountof physical activity. This can bedone in longer sessions ofmoderately intense activities, suchas walking, or in shorter sessionsof more vigorous activities, suchas fast walking or stair walking. You can benefit from physicalactivity even if you think ofyourself as elderly or you alreadyhave old-age conditions, such asosteoarthritis or heart disease.Being more active may improveyour quality of life and canprevent or delay disability.

It is advisable to talk to yourdoctor before starting a fitnessprogram. You may have healthproblems that limit what youcan do.

At Belmont Village we have aPhysical Fitness Program availablefor all residents with consentsfrom their doctor. The program iscoordinated by a personal trainer. The Sit and Be Fit Exercise groupalso meet Monday through Fridayat the Town Hall. We also haveseveral exercise machines availableat the Center for Life Enhance-ment for the residents to use whensupervised by a personal trainer.

Ramona Hite:Courage and Culture

From the PlainsBy Jim GoodsonRamona Hite is a small-town

girl with a big-time list ofaccomplishments, grateful formerstudents, friends and admirers.

Ramona and her husband, Bill, are leaders in the Panhandle townof Pampa, Texas, 60 milesnorthwest of Amarillo and 44miles east of Lake Meredith—theonly substantial body of water inthis dry arid desert-like partof Texas.

The Hite family reflects theethics of its surroundings:authentic, hardworking andfamily-oriented. Success hasnaturally followed.

Ramona was born during anAmarillo snowstorm in December1946. Her dad, Henry Aurouze, was superintendent of the Pioneer

Gas Company’s Canadian RiverField. Henry and his wife,Dorothy, raised their family in anoil-and-gas camp, along with thefirm’s employees near tiny Fritch,Texas.

Page 6: Belmont Village of Turtle · PDF fileBelmont Village of Turtle Creek August 2016 Our Team ... on the Dallas Chapter Alzheimer’s ... motion for muscles and joints,

Ramona rode the “yellow dog”school busses to Sanford-FritchHigh School, a relatively wealthyschool due to tax revenue fromthe region’s many oil andgas fields.

“We had many talentedteachers,” she says. “One teacherin particular was inspiring. Hername was Anell Clay and she wasborn without hands. She held thechalk between her wrists andwrote beautifully on theblackboard.”

“She told us, ‘If I can do thiswithout hands, think of what youcan accomplish with hands.’”

Lake Meredith fun was part of ahappy, rural childhood.

“They built the Sanford-LakeMeredith dam when I was ateenager,” Ramona recalls. “Wehad a lot of good times swimmingand sailing on the lake.” Ramonawas the first Miss Sanford Dam ina beauty contest to promote thelake’s opening.

Ramona started college at TexasTech then transferred to WestTexas State University, a Canyoncollege with a strong educationdepartment. Attending WTSUmade it easier for her to keepdating Bill Hite, who was working

toward a pharmacy degree atSouthwestern Oklahoma StateUniversity in Weatherford.

The couple was married in1968 at First United MethodistChurch in Borger. “My parentswere OK with the marriage butthey insisted I get my degree,”Ramona says. So the WTSU juniorcommuted 180 miles from Pampato Canyon every day for a year.

In addition to Ramona, Bill hadhis eye on Pampa’s venerableHeard and Jones Pharmacy.Anyone who has ever lived in asmall town knows the importanceof the local pharmacy. Not onlydo people go there for drugs, medical and school supplies, thesmall town pharmacy—with itsold-fashioned soda fountain—isthe center of day-to-day social life.

Such was the Hites’ Heard andJones Health Mart, renamed aftera brief affiliation with Rexall. In1986, it was named America’s bestHealth Mart pharmacy.

After graduation, Ramonabegan teaching business coursesat Pampa High School. Disciplinewas never a problem for tworeasons, she says.

“On the first day of school, Imet each student at the door, introduced myself, thenintroduced them to their assignedseat. My students took theseclasses because they wanted to.They knew they could lead to agood job.”

She was deeply involved withthe Pampa Area Chamber ofCommerce. She ran the MissTop O’ Texas Beauty Pageant forthree years and in 2010 wasnamed Pampa’s Citizen of theYear. The Texas BusinessEducation Association namedher the state’s Teacher of theYear in 1986—just one of manyteaching awards.

The Hites have two children.Chris has a degree ininternational business fromTexas A&M and is senior partnerof J. Hilburn Custom Men’sClothing. Meredith earned adegree in public relations fromTexas Tech and is director ofmedia relations for IBB DesignFine Furnishings.

When Ramona was 40, whatshe thought was a pinched nervein her neck turned into adiagnosis of multiple sclerosis. She went through a battery oftests, including one “todetermine how positive I am.”

The doctors could have savedtheir money on that test. Aseverybody at Belmont Villageknows, no one has a morepositive attitude than Ramona.

“I know it sounds strange, butif it’s possible for a disease to bea blessing in disguise, this hasbeen,” Ramona says. “I’ve beenable to complete the DiscipleBible Study Group, which Inever would have had time todo otherwise.”
