Nuacht na Scoile -Belgrove Updates!

There is so much taking place in the school currently that it is hard to record all on a

newsletter. Please keep up to date via our school website and follow us on Twitter. I

would like to say MÍLE BUÍOCHAS to all who help make the school a positive

learning environment for the girls and to all the parents who help out on a voluntary

capacity with the many and varied school activities that take place. The girls are very

privileged. Buíochas also to the Board of Management who work on a voluntary

basis. The Board's main function is to manage the school on behalf of the patron and

for the benefit of the students and to provide an appropriate education for each student

at the school.

Céard a bhí á dhéanamh againn? (What have we been doing?)

Child Protection

As per Department of Education Circular 81/2017 our Child Protection Safeguarding

Statement is posted on the school website. A hard copy is available to view outside

the secretary’s office. All school staff engaged in the training day on Friday 9th

March 2018.

Bag Pack: Buíochas mór to the girls who helped with the Bag Pack Fundraiser in Supervalu

Killester on Sat. 3rd February. Buíochas freisin to the parents who gave up their time

to help supervise. A big thankyou to Supervalu for their continued support.

Bake Sale & Pop Up Coffee Shop: Buíochas

mór to all the girls & parents who donated the

gorgeous cakes for the Bake Sale on Friday 23rd

February. A great day of purchasing was had by

all, with parents able to enjoy a cuppa in the hall.

Buíochas to the parents who helped out during

the day and ensured all ran smoothly. See

schoolwebsite – Parents’ Association Section for

great pictures and more details!

Valentine’s Day Fundraiser Our Valentine's Day €2 donation fundraiser for Temple Street, raised a fantastic €660!

Míle buíochas :) Thanks to Mia Teeling, Mrs. Daly’s 5th class, who wrote a lovely

Active Committee

The Active Committee meet every Thursday morning in the computer room. Recently

they have been working on an Active Blog on the school website. The girls have been

writing to encourage students to be fit and healthy. There are some great examples of

activities both in school and the local community so be sure to check it out.

Remember, BE ACTIVE!

Swimming

Comhghairdeas to Lara Forde, Fearne Morrissey, Ciara Mulcahy and Lucy Owens

who represented Belgrove Senior Girls' School in the All Ireland Swimming Gala on

Sun. 11th Feb. They came 5th overall!! Maith sibh!

We participated in the Food Dudes Healthy Eating

Programme. I hope you felt it was of benefit to your

daughter. Please give one fruit and one vegetable as

part of your daughter’s five-a-day. Each girl

received a lunchbox to try and encourage her to keep

up the healthy eating!

Céadaoin an Luaithrigh/Ash Wednesday

Fr. Larry celebrated Catholic Schools Week with us on Wednesday 1st February by

holding a service in the school hall. A month later Lent began, on Wednesday 1st

March and the girls were encouraged to make a special Lenten promise. Buíochas to

Fr. Larry and his helpers who distributed ashes to the girls and staff in the school hall.

First Reconciliation

Comhghairdeas to all our 2nd class girls who received the Sacrament of First

Reconciliation in their class groupings in St. John’s Church during the month of

March. Buíochas mór to all the priests who officiated at the ceremony to make it a

special, memorable occasion. Thanks also to the teachers for all their hard work in

preparing the children for this special time in their lives.

Sacrament of Confirmation

Our 6th classes participated in the “You Shall be my Witness” Programme as part of

their preparation for Confirmation. Many thanks to Deirdre Ward, our pastoral

worker, and the parents who assisted in running the programme.

Retreats

Our 6th class girls had their retreat this week in Manresa Jesuit Centre of Spirituality,

We are very fortunate to have such a lovely facility so near. Thank-you Eileen! The

Prayer Room in Manresa was built in 1992 to house five stained glass windows by

Evie Hone (1894–1955) which were previously in the Jesuit house at Tullabeg,

Rahan, near Tullamore. The windows are absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.

Reconciliation

6th class girls will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday 16th April

2018.

Sacramental Choirs

The 4th and 5th class pupils are very busy preparing for singing at the upcoming

sacramental masses. Buiochas mór to the teachers for all their hard work!

come in each week to help ensure the scheme runs

smoothly. Application forms for the saving scheme

are available from the secretary’s office if your

daughter is not a member and would like to join the

scheme.

Garden Tidy

Saturday 14th April 3-5p.m. weather permitting!

Sneachta

Teachers will be asked to note in their planning where the content and learning objectives

which were planned for the time the school was closed, are being included in their schemes of

work.

Department of Education Circular 09/2017

Appendix B: Guidance for schools in relation to making up for time lost due to

unforeseen closures 1. The school authority should, in the first instance, quantify the number of school

closures that have occurred.

2. The school authority should, in consultation with the Principal and teachers, assess the

effect of the loss of tuition and identify any shortfalls that have occurred as a result of the

unforeseen closures.

3. The school authority should consult with the Principal and teachers with a view to

ensuring that the curriculum for each class/year group can be completed before year end.

Subject to consensus at local level, any changes to normal practice that can be made to

facilitate such work should be put in place. A non-exhaustive list of possible examples of

how this might be achieved include:

prioritising tuition over other non-tuition activities

reducing where possible the length of mock/house examinations

consideration of whether learning in the classroom should be prioritised over

school tours, etc.

Belgrove Book Clubs take place once a month in the library. This year we

also have 3rd classes participating! 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes meet separately,

where we have great fun discussing and commenting on the books we have

been reading! You can follow the suggested reading material on the school

website under the relevant class heading, or read the notices on the board

outside the office. Míle buíochas to the parents who have volunteered to help with

supervision.

Book Haven Mobile Book Shop

Our mobile book shop was a great success this year and buíochas for the

support given to the school through the sale of books.

I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to encourage your

daughter to read. Read to her, read with her, encourage her to

read on her own. Discuss the books and share opinions. This

improves literacy significantly and will be of huge benefit to your

daughter.

Bí ag léamh!

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day on Friday 16th March. The girls were encouraged to

dress up as a character from a book and write a book review based on their favourite

book. The following were presented with prizes in the school hall! Their reviews are

Standardised Testing

As per circular 34/2016 we will carry out standardised testing during May / early

TUSLA (Educational Welfare Services Child and Family Agency) Established

01/01/2014

It is a requirement for schools to report absences of 20 days or more to TUSLA

which now incorporates the National Education Welfare Board (NEWB). Under

this arrangement, we must also categorise the reason for each absence, hence the

importance of sending in a written note to the Class Teacher explaining why your

daughter has been absent, on every occasion. The absence note should be on a

separate page, and not in your daughter’s homework journal, because the Class

Teacher will have to retain it for reference. There are two mandatory reporting periods

in the year: the end of December and the end of school year. Please note that reports

are cumulative from the start of the school year. As a matter of courtesy you will

be notified if your daughter is recorded on the Student Absence Report Form. Please

see www.tusla.ie for further details.

Holidays during term are not encouraged. Neither is it the policy of the school to

set ‘holiday work’ for pupils. Attendance at school is very important and the

work of the school continues right up to the end of June each year. If family

holidays during term time are unavoidable, please inform your child’s Class

Teacher in writing, in advance of the proposed absence from school
