DECEMBER 2:10PM
END OF YEAR MESSAGE
Farewell
It is with a sense of sadness but also pride that I write my
final newsletter as Principal of Belair Primary School. I
started here in 2008 and have been the leader and
custodian of a wonderful school and community.
Throughout this 10 year period there have been many
changes. Some have presented us with challenging issues
but mostly, they have resulted in an improved learning
environment for your children and have enabled the
school and community to grow together.
I would like to thank the school community for their
wonderful support. I appreciate the many ways in which
you contribute by attending meetings, participating in
excursions and camps, assisting in classrooms, coaching
sporting teams, working in the canteen and resource
centre, dealing with lost property and the list goes on.
Thank you to the students present and past. Each day I
have shared with you, your ‘ah ha’ learning moments.
These are wonderful and one of the reasons that makes
teaching such a rewarding profession.
I have had the privilege of working with a dedicated and
professional staff group, who work each day with
commitment to ensure that our students are cared for
and learn to the best of their ability. A sincere thank you
to all staff for their unwavering focus on student learning
and outstanding ability to work so well as a team, of
which I have so enjoyed being a part of.
Leanne Twigden will be in the role of Principal for the
first two terms. During this time, Richard Costi our
Education Director will conduct the selection process for
a new Principal to begin in term 3. As a high performing
school we are hoping to attract many capable applicants
and then select the best person to collaboratively lead our
school into the future.
I leave knowing that the school will continue to deliver a
high quality learning environment for all students, with
extremely capable and confident leaders and staff driving
continual improvement.
Best wishes to students and families who are leaving the
school.
I would like to wish students, parents/carers and families
a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope
everyone has the opportunity to enjoy some quality
family time during your summer break.
Merry Christmas and best wishes, Susan Copeland.
CONGRATULATIONS CARAWATHA
The final regular assembly was hosted by the Carawatha
Unit. Their inquiry was ‘People celebrate different events
that are important to them’ - It was wonderful to see the
confidence of the children, knowing their parts and being
able to perform in front of a wider audience. They
thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing to ‘Santa wear
your shorts tonight’ and ‘We’re going on a Summer
Holiday’.

CLASS PLACEMENT 2018
Included in your child’s report is a letter advising you of
class placement for 2018. All children have contributed to
the placement process by nominating preferred friends.
On Friday 15/12/2017, children will visit their 2018
classroom and meet the teacher/s and fellow classmates.
Please refer to the letter you receive included in your
child’s report folder for details of the process to use,
should you have significant concerns regarding your
child’s placement,
MATERIAL AND SERVICES CHARGES 2017
Thank you for the very positive responses we received
from our latest poll amongst families for the Materials
and Service charges for 2018.
From the responses we received, an overwhelming
94.7% of parents voted in favour of endorsing the
proposal that the full amount of Materials & Service
charge of $380 be legally recoverable.
Parents will receive information about this when invoices
are sent out in mid-January 2018.
JUNIOR PRIMARY PICNIC
RESOURCE CENTRE
This week we are closed for borrowing and all students
are making a big effort to return their books. Many
resources need to be culled/tidied and stocktake is taking
place. Over the year many new books have been
purchased thanks to your continual support of the
Scholastic Book Club orders/Book Fair.
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered in the
Resource Centre this year, especially the regulars - Diane,
Sue, Anne, Annette and Raelene. Many students have
also been very helpful before and after school.
Thanks again and have a great Christmas and New Year.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
Congratulations to everyone who completed the Premier
Reading Challenge in 2017. This year 34 students in
year 6 & 7 received certificates for completing the
challenge for the last 8 years. Congratulations to Ebony
and Carla who were awarded certificates for completing
the challenge for the last 9 years.
YEAR 7 GRADUATION
On behalf of the school community, I would like to
congratulate our year 7 students on their graduation
from Belair Primary School and wish them success as they
embark on their secondary education.
Last night we witnessed one of the milestones that occur
in children’s lives, that being the Graduation ceremony
for our year 7 students. These students were farewelled
in wonderful Belair tradition with the spotlight placed on
their achievements. The dancing, speeches and indeed,
fashions were all fabulous.
MP Sam Duluk and Mr John Sandham from the Rotary
Club of Coromandel Valley joined us as honoured guests
for the celebrations. John presented Citizenship Awards
to Juliette P and Albert T for their wonderful
commitment to service activities in and out of school.
This year the award for ‘Outstanding Service to Belair
Primary School’ was awarded to Indigo Homersham.
This award is given to a student who has provided
outstanding service to the school on a continual basis
over an extended period of time.
Indigo, Juliette and Albert are deserving winners. We
congratulate these students on their Awards, thank them
for the significant contribution they have made and wish
them well for their future.
A big thank you to the Parent Association for their work
in preparing the Hall and providing supper at the
conclusion of the formalities. Your contribution is always
appreciated.
Thank you to the middle school teachers and the staff for
their wonderful work in preparing the students for the
evening and supporting the Graduation event.
Our best wishes go to all year 7 students when,
tomorrow afternoon, they leave Belair and move to
High School in 2018. Good luck for your future.

GOVERNING COUNCIL
Happy Holidays on behalf of the Governing Council.
Everyone have an enjoyable and safe summer. We look
forward to seeing you next year and our best wishes go
to those students and families who are leaving the school
at the end of this year, particularly those off to year 8!
On behalf of the Governing Council, thank you to Susan
Copeland, who has been principal of Belair PS for the last
decade. We wish her well in her new role at Burnside PS.
Thank you also to Leanne Twigden who will be principal
during the selection process, which will begin next year.
The Governing Council would also like to recognise and
thank Hasmik Anassian who has been a stalwart
volunteer with Parent Association and a GC member and
our Treasurer for the last ten years.
We would also like to thank Carly Hocking who is
stepping down as Governing Council chair. She has been
a great organiser and champion for the school
community.
Thanks also to retiring GC members, and those who
intend to continue or re-nominate.
As usual there will be a few open seats on Governing
Council for next year. You are encouraged to express an
interest and attend the Annual General Meeting which
will be 20 February, 2018.
We will have a busy year in 2018 with the selection of a
new principal, discussing priorities for the site
improvement plan and facilities amongst the regular
duties.
The Governing Council make decisions about the broad
direction for the school taking into account DECD
requirements. Governance includes setting the broad
direction and vision for the school, strategic planning,
determining policies, determining the application of the
total financial resources and monitoring, reporting and
reviewing. Council work allows you to gain an
understanding of the workings of the School and to
contribute to its long term success. Council meetings are
held twice a term. In addition, most Councillors sit on
one of Council’s subcommittees: Finance, After School
Sport, Education, Canteen, Grounds and Out Of School
Hours Care.
Meetings run for 90 minutes twice a term. Members
commit to serve a two year term. You can nominate up
to a week before the AGM in February, information will
be in the newsletter. Questions can be directed to Leanne
Twigden or any of the current governing council
members.
Aaron Osterby, Deputy Chair, Belair Governing Council
CANTEEN
Wow what a busy year it has been in the Canteen! Lots
of fantastic special days and events and I’m sure the
students all enjoyed these along with our regular Canteen
service. A big thankyou to all of my amazing helpers, you
do a fantastic job and I couldn’t do it without you. Also
to the year sevens that helped in the Canteen at lunch
time I thank you all, you did a great job.
A couple of reminders for the holidays, please give your
re-usable lunch wallets a wipe out so they are fresh and
clean for next year. Once you know your children’s new
class number please change it on Flexi schools and on
their re-usable wallets so they will be ready to go in
2018.
Farewell to the wonderful year 7’s and those of you
moving on to other schools. Goodbye and good luck for
the future.
A big thankyou to all that use the Canteen. We have a
great service here at Belair and it is because the Canteen
is well supported. I am looking forward to that
continuing and growing next year.
I hope that you all have a wonderful
Christmas and enjoy the holidays with your
families. Stay safe and I look forward to a
great 2018.
Julie
PASTORAL SUPPORT WORKER
Dear Belair Families,
We have come to the end of another year and Christmas
is just a short time away. Things seem hectic at the
moment. Someone mentioned to me recently that it is
ironic so many Christmas cards have “Peace” written all
over them and Christmas seems anything but peaceful.
She is so right! I was at Marion the other day and it was
crazy and everyone seemed mad at each other. I must
confess, I am quite grumpy as well. I don’t think I’m
spreading much peace around at the moment.
So in this busy, stressful time that is supposed to be
peaceful and joyful, it might be helpful to remember the
prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to
console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
May you have a blessed, peaceful Christmas!

PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWS
The Parent Association has had a great year full of
fundraisers, meetings, social events and activities. To
everyone on the Parent Association, Class Parent Reps,
and in the general school community who have helped
and supported - by volunteering, attending, wrapping,
photocopying, distributing, meeting, singing, cooking,
serving, donating, setting up, packing up, putting up,
taking down, laughing, buying, selling, organising,
guillotining, designing, and more laughing … THANK
YOU!
To our PA members and Class Parent Reps who are
leaving the school - we will miss you and all the help you
have given us over the years. Special thank you to Jo
Osmond and Hasmik Anassian, what you’ve given Belair
during your time here has been invaluable. We wish you
and your families all the best for the future.
For those families returning to Belair PS next year, please
consider taking a role on the Parent Association. It’s a
great bunch of people, no job is too big or too hard,
there are always other members who can show you the
ropes, and you’d be welcomed with open arms.
Have a wonderful Christmas break everyone, best wishes
for the New Year. Merry Christmas!!

PACIFIC SCHOOL GAMES
In week 8, I participated in the Pacific School Games as a
member of the 12/U South Australian Netball Team.
Only 12 girls were picked for the team and I was selected
as a goalie. Trials were in June and after trials we began
training once a month in Term 3 and played a carnival at
Murray Bridge which we won. We trained every Sunday
in Term 4 as part of our preparation for the tournament.
We played New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland,
Western Australia, Australian Capital Territory, Northern
Territory and the Budgies (Australian Indigenous Team)
at Priceline Stadium. Each day we also had activities with
members from other teams to encourage bonding and
good sportsmanship.
This team was a lot of fun and the level of netball was
really good. My coaches were excellent, I learnt a lot and
I met a lot of nice girls. It was a really good week.
