Critical thinking means identifying  the subject, identifying  the author·s thesis ( opinion or point of  v iew), 

pinpointing  the arguments supporting  the thesis, identifying  the details used to support the arguments, 

and ev aluating  the supporting  details.

Before you begin reading, examine your opinions about both sides of  the issue. Rev iew the difficult 

 v ocabulary  that precedes each reading, so that unfamiliar w ords w ill not interf ere w ith your 

comprehension. Then q uickly  skim the reading  to g et a  understanding  of  the subject and the author·s 

thesis. Compare your opinions about the subject w ith the author·s. think  about ho w open you are to w hat 

you are about to read.

Identify  the arguments and their support 

1. Testimony  : if  the author uses testimonials, are his or her sources really expect on the subject? Are

they  objecti ve or biased? Did the author select the experts w ho are most q ualified or merely  those

 w ho w ould support his or her thesis?

2. Facts: If  the author uses facts, are they  pro v able and unpro v able? Ha ve some facts been included 

and others omitted in order to support the thesis? Y ou ha ve heard about lying w ith statistics, but 

even w ith good intentions, facts are open to interpretation. Sometimes the author·s opinions are

disguised as facts.

3. Examples: If  the author uses examples, are there enough of  them? Are they  representati ve enough 

to support the g eneralizations the author w ants to mak e?
