Project coordinator Health and Arts Research Centre (HARC) Inc used environmental behaviour research (Zeisel 2006), community cultural development (Cameron and Gibson 2001) and sustainable heritage methodologies (Galia 2006) to develop the arts and culture program. The project was primarily a consumer and community engagement project rather than a research study but parHcipants self-reported significant benefits, including improved quality of life, which have been documented by HARC. CriHcal success factors were the high level of engagement from consumers and staff and the use of a non-tradiHonal arts-based engagement methodology to improve clinical outcomes. The project was mapped against the engagement spectrum developed by the InternaHonal Centre for Public ParHcipaHon (IAP2) and models current best pracHce in a consumer-led model of community parHcipaHon which is tradiHonally very difficult to achieve in a public health seOng. The program had four individual projects: Imagine! AddiHonal support was provided by Blacktown Arts Centre through the Pat Parker Residency Program. An iniHal workshop involving about 100 people (including paHents, carers, friends, staff, community and arHsts) generated the concepts for the artworks and endorsed the objecHve of using art to enhance the physical environment, raise awareness of chronic renal disease and improve quality of life, especially for young adults living with dialysis. Snapshot ! The program increased the parHcipaHon of young adults on dialysis treatment in the support group which has been beneficial for maintaining social connecHon and miHgaHng isolaHon due to chronic disease which is oben seen as an “old person’s problem”. ! Staff and paHents reported that the atmosphere of the centre has been extremely posiHve and collegiate, with the artworks providing a “talking point” on which to connect. ! Using a creaHve, arts-based methodology helped break down disHncHons between staff and paHents, young people and older people, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. ! Staff feel more confident about embracing new approaches to care, to think more creaHvely and to engage more closely with paHents and carers in the delivery and design of services. !
