MORGAN AFTER-r KENTUCKY COAL
There is a fishy story going therounds that J P Morgan is afterthe coal mines of Western Kentucky and that the electric buttonhas been touched by the financialwizard that will accomplish hisdesires The question naturally-
i arises what does Morgan wantwith the coal mines of WesternKentucky He has all that iscoming to him
QUESTIONYConcerning the work of the
Coal Strike Commission President Roosevelt expresses theopinion that it is of vast andincalculable benefit to the na
sstion The President exaggerates in this as he does in mostother matters The recommendations of the Commission concerning the conduct of strikers-
e and the rights of nonunion menought to have a wholesome effeet but so far it seems to havelead little of any kind
Concerning the Presidentsopinion Henry Loomis Nelsonin the Boston Herald says andhe does not mince the truth intelling ituTo say this showsthe optimism of the Presidentsbosom but not the strength ofhis head Every act every word-
s which has proceeded from therepresentatives of organized labor since the Commissions decisioii haBshowri that fundamen
rtnlIy iaUbi uuioiis as now organ ¬
izcrland as now inspired andled arc enemies of labor and ofthe community arid thereforeas such enemies of the publicwelfare as restrainers of trade >
as persecutors of the efficient inImustrbe put down or be refOJmedIAnd they must be put down bythe community or reformed byItheir own best men who now suf- ¬
fer with the res of us from thefollies the excesses the oppres
sions and the wickedness of menwhose means of livelihood depond upon their capacity tomake trouble and to restore thatstate of private war which ceasedto exist in Europe in the middleages but has now been restoredin America in England and inHolland by the very men whosewelfare is absolutely dependentupon the maintenance of prosperity One great difficulty inthe vfay of a betterment of con-
ditions is the cowardice of thepoliticians and the press Fromthe President down not a politician dare speak the precise truthto the labor men and all but a-
very few journalists are coweringwith the politicians The truthmust however and thetime is comingwhen it will bespoken to nod purpose In themeantime it would be just aswell to cease prattling about theincalculable good which the Presdents Strike Commission hasaccomplished at least until theprattling shall be no longer dis-turbed by the hoarse cries of thestrikers as they pursue nonunionmen from their work and do theiruttermost to break up or interrupt the countrys prosperity forfiis clearly the truth thatnoth
ing is threatening that prosperity but the mOll for whose beneIfit Mr Roosevelt utters not asingle wise and courageous wordof warning or of exhortation tomoderation or to loyal obedienceto the law
Who is there of character orreputation to deny the truth ofall this Wo hear much talk ofthe negro problem The laborproblem the right of men toIwork and to protection by laware questions that are growingmore seriousand the settlementor the solution must come beforemany years Nashville Amen
