Leadership Vision - 15 years from Now My Fifteen years will go by quick and I will see my children grow into teenagers, following a litany of childhood activities and athletics. At least one of my kids will golf with me every other weekend. My wife is fully practicing acupuncture mostly for her own passion and joy of providing care in her own way. She takes joy in the self-sufficiency of the kids but is beginning to dread the future emptying of the nest. My health will be at its peak. At age 57, I am at ideal weight of 180 pounds, and extremely fit. no more hypertension and normal cholesterol levels. I still take my asa, multi vitamin, and fish oils each day, but otherwise no meds needed. Renee and I have traveled all over the country/world together, with kids and we are hitting our golden years where finances and health could not be better. We enjoy our time together as well as our time for our own personal joys. We are planning a big trip to New Zealand for 2 months with the kids. My career sustained a subtle yet progressive course and I continue to act in a senior executive role for my organization. With the support of an amazing team that has evolved over many years, I have built a strong infrastructure of nursing using a fully collaborative approach with the physicians, ancillary professionals, and our community partners. We have achieved several benchmarks set by the 2030 future of nursing report including advanced educational preparation, specialty certification, and becoming true partners in the redesign of the American healthcare system. Safety standards are prioritized and we continue to maintain zero defects in patient safety. Our preoccupation with failure has allowed us to be a learning organization that works together to solve problems rather than place blame. Nurses and physicians call each other by first name, and everyone loves the work they do; in fact, they cannot imagine ever doing anything different. Over the last 10 years, I have been involved in and even president of many community organizations and professional boards. I currently serve as the President of the AONE and spend time in the Sacramento and Washington DC advising politicians on health policy.

ER kids day started as a way to bridge the gap between home life and work life. It was a way to let our kids see what we did in the ED as nurses, physicians and techs. It was about time our home family connected with those we call our work family, whom we were often with for 12 hours per day. When in our work like, we get to teach our patients about their diagnosis and disease processes. We get to mentor new staff into their new careers as health care professionals and teach each other about unfamiliar skills or topics in the medical field. We encourage each other to always wash our hands and use infection prevention strategies to keep our patient’s safe. We teach a lot at home as well…we teach our kids about growing up and maybe becoming a nurse or a doctor. We teach them about unfamiliar skills, life lessons and sometimes about lessons we have learned through our peers and patients. We also encourage them to wash their hands, cough in their elbow and how to stay healthy. A lot of these topics blend whether we are talking about them to our patients and peers or to our families.   No one asked me to put on this event but I had a true desire to teach our kids about some of the important things we do as health care professionals. I value the education journey I went on in order for me to become a nurse and to provide insight to my own child and others about what it is really like to work in an ED. Additionally, being an MICN for many years, I have had the unfortunate opportunity to run many sad calls that involved pediatric patients. Children being injured and even killed from injuries that had a prevention factor to the event…like wearing a helmet, safely approaching dogs or correctly wearing a seat belt.     An event that teaches kids about safety, injury prevention and infection prevention is an example of a innovative way to provide leadership to the team and the community….Why this is an example of a 4 way win….   Home/Family My own child has been coming to this event since she was 5. She gets to see where Mommy works, meet my co-workers and their families and I get to proud to bring her into my amazing job My parents come every year to the event and learn just as much as my daughter does Improvement; The relationship with my family has strengthened as they understand what working in the ED means. A part of being a leader is being a role model; my daughter is interested in being a nurse too . Work Every year we have approximately 20 ED volunteers that work this event. It amazes me that they take off a Saturday morning to come volunteer at a place where they already work The sense of team work and commitment to the well – being of the kids in our community rings high amongst me and my co-workers We are acknowledged in the CEO’s weekly message that is sent out to the whole campus giving kudos to the event Work life and home life get to meet which builds stronger relationships…hence a higher likelihood of more cohesive work teams ED Kids Day has been recognized many years through the Core awards Improvement/Satisfaction; Being an effective leader in the department and in community events role models behaviors for future leaders. Leadership does not only mean leading within the confines of the hospital. I look forward to working with my peers yearly on this Community The relationship that is established through this event with our community partners is great. SDFD, CHP, Mercy Air, Search and Rescue Teams, SD City Ambulances, Children’s Hospital and the YMCA. The media has featured our event on multiple different venues…San Diego tribune newspaper, KUSI new cast and Fox 6 News news cast Branches out to national community as well with our Professional Nursing Organization…ENA Connect Magazine feature Improvement; The relationship between these community members continues to be strong and being a leader at SMH that they can reach out to improves the ability to impact care of patients. Self My child and parents are proud of where I work and of the event I help to coordinate annually I get to pull what I know from being an experienced nurse for the greater good of the community. It is my way of giving back. Work life and home life get to meet – to me, being able to meet my co-workers families, whom I get to hear about at work, is personally satisfying Improvement; I get to mentor others into this role of organizing this big event. It was very helpful when I had to organize my daughters elementary schools Halloween carnival this past year.

Presentation Notes
Why do you do it? You don't get paid or work credit so why?Nursing is a second career for me. I started working in the grocery store when I was 16 years old and moved up the ladder quickly and was making really good money. It wasn't until I was 35 years old that I realized that this wasn't my calling. I made a big move and career change and started working in admitting in 2007. After working there for 6 months, ED staff approached me about coming to work in the ED as a tech. I was perplexed by the offer as I had no medical experience and was still relatively freaked out about even working in a hospital. I interviewed for the position and gave the dumbest answers ever to the interview questions but they still hired me because they "liked my energy." I had no clue what I was doing and relied heavily on others to mentor me through the process. My entire HCP and nursing school experience was successful because I had people like Christy LaFlamme who believed in me and taught me everything I needed to know. So I give back to others because I wouldn't be in this position and successful without those people who invested in me.2. How does it help you feel fulfilled in the following domains of your life?SELF: I think anytime you give someone a piece of yourself, you feel fulfilled and rewarded. For me, I feel that God has me in this position for a reason and I hope that He will be glorified and properly acknowledged as a response to the heart He has given me for these people and for this opportunity. I wasn't smart enough to choose any of this for myself. This is all part of a bigger plan that I surrendered to. Home/Family: 2. The other way it has impacted my family is it has given my kids the opportunity to come and see something positive that their mom is doing for others. Often times my kids meet people I'm mentoring because they come to my house for interview prep. They've also attended a few meetings on nights that I haven't had child care. I think anytime a child can see their parent helping others they are impacted in a positive way and they learn themselves to do the same. Work:   My job satisfaction is absolutely higher because of my participation with my mentor group. Many people have been hired into this hospital as a result of attending my group. I get the opportunity to see these smiling faces when I give report to the floor and I work alongside others who were hired into my department. I have had the opportunity to mentor a few in the RN mentor program that Sharp puts on after these people came through my mentor group. It really makes for a positive workplace when you have positive interactions with people and they feel like you are truly invested in their success. I've also had a tremendous amount of support from my leadership team who have helped with PowerPoints, presentations and mock interview panels. My mentor group has given me the opportunity to get to know these leaders better and also give them a chance to be involved in something positive. I precepted a nursing student a couple of years ago who started coming to my mentor group. She liked it so much she told me I should work at her school because they were all about Servant Leadership. She referred me to her instructor and I have been working at that school for 4 semesters now. So my mentor group has inadvertently helped my family financially by opening doors to new job opportunities. Community: My program was originally intended for HCPs in my department. After the first year it expanded to HCPs throughout the hospital and all volunteers. After year two it expanded to pretty much anyone who wanted to attend. Since I am now a clinical instructor at Pt. Loma Nazarene and USD I have many students who periodically attend or who use this as their meeting for their leadership credit. How has it helped you be a better nurse? A better leader? In general I'm committed to being a good nurse. I think that speaking about the Sharp experience and our mission and values in my mentor meetings gives me this keen awareness to what this organization is about and makes me want to continuously rise to the occasion for my patients. I also think that being in a position where I act as a role model for new nurses makes me always want to bring my best and be supportive. I feel that they expect this behavior from me. This position has also led to me recently becoming an Advanced Clinician and I feel that these same expectations go with this role.As far as leadership goes. Public speaking has always been my biggest fear. Having to speak in front of people regularly has made me conquer this fear and has given me the tools to be a better leader. Like I said above, it has also led to me becoming an Advanced Clinician and I feel like I am being seen more as a leader and resource in my department. Has it improved my overall satisfaction or performance in other areas?Absolutely. I feel completely fulfilled in my life in all areas
