BCPVPA elections for President-elect and four DirectorsNominations open April 3, close May 5. Elections in June.

BCPVPA members will elect a President-Elect and four Directors in June. The newly-elected members will join existing members of the Board who are completing their terms. The elections will take place with the following timeline:

• Nominations open Monday, April 3.• Nominations close Friday, May 5 (at 5 pm).• Candidates will speak at the Saturday, May 13 Chapter Council meeting.• A special election issue of eNews, with candidate statements, will be published on May 19.• Written statements for all candidates are limited to 550 words.• The election for President-elect will take place June 6 to 8.• To be successful a candidate for President-elect must receive 50% of the votes cast plus one.• Additional ballots will be held as required.• A candidate who is not successful as President-elect may choose to stand for election as a Director.• The election for Directors will take place June 13-15 (unless additional ballots are required for President-

As one of four Managers, Legal and Contract Services, this is a full-time continuing position with the following duties:

• Provide support and advice to members both individually and collectively on the negotiation of personal services contracts;

• Liaison with the Association’s external legal counsel;• Conduct research and analyze data that advances the economic welfare and employment status of

principals and vice-principals;• Provide support for members on professional matters;• Deliver workshops and make presentations on legal issues and matters related to the economic welfare of

members;• Provide advice and support for members matters related to the Teachers’ Pension Plan and Long-Term

Disability Plan;• Provide advice and information to the Association’s Board of Directors as requested by the Executive

Director; and,• Assist in the development of the Association’s annual budget and strategic plan.

A successful applicant will possess the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

• Proven ability in the fields of human resources and/or employment law, with particular strengths in negotiations, contract administration, and dispute resolution;

• Knowledge of the B.C. School Act, the roles and responsibilities of principals and vice-principals and the BC public education system;

• Ability to work effectively with the Association’s education partners;• Ability to work both independently and as part of a cohesive management team;• Excellent written and oral communications skills;• Knowledge of current research and data analysis in the area of educational leadership; and,• Willingness to travel within the province and to serve members beyond the normal work day.

Experience as a principal or school district administrator in British Columbia’s public schools is an asset. The Association also welcomes applications from individuals with experience in human resources in the K-12 education system and from lawyers with expertise in employment law within the B.C. public education context.

Applicants are requested to provide a letter of application, resume and at least three current references. Applications must be submitted no later than 5 pm, Wednesday, April 19. This is a permanent position with a start date of July 1 or August 1. Complete application packages should be submitted to:

BCPVPA opportunitiesContract Advisory & Student Voice & Ministry Working Group

Contract Advisory (CAC): There are two openings in the KOOTENAY zone on the Contract Advisory Committee which includes Southeast Kootenay, Rocky Mountain, Kootenay Lakes, Arrow Lakes, Kootenay-Columbia, and Boundary. The Contract Advisory Committee advises the BCPVPA Board of Directors on matters related to contract negotiations, total compensation, and support for members in their employment relationships with school districts, and serves in a liaison role to ensure that BCPVPA economic security policy and programs reflect member needs and perspectives. The successful candidate will be part of a committee comprised of representatives from the seven BCPSEA geographic zones, two BCPVPA Board Members, and the President. Committee members are appointed for two-year terms and may serve up to three consecutive terms. The Committee meets twice or three times per year in Vancouver. Applications are due by 3 pm, April 18. Student Voice: The BCPVPA is seeking expressions of interest from members who wish to participate in Student Voice as advisors. We are looking for members in: 1) South Vancouver Island, 2) North Interior (Prince George area) and, 3) Northwest (Prince Rupert area). The next Student Voice meeting is scheduled for September 29/30 at the Pacific Gateway Hotel in Richmond. Ministry Working Group: The BCPVPA has been asked to recommend five or six principals to participate in working group to develop a Numeracy Assessment Information Package (joining representatives from FISA, distributed learning, international education and First Nations education). The working group will meet four to five times via video or conference call and be called on through implementation as needed to address any issues. It is anticipated that this package will be distributed to the field in late May/early June and will include information on topics such as administration process and steps, operational requirements (i.e. technology), supports, and FAQs. The Vancouver Visible Learningplus Institute is a two-day conference with John Hattie and Ainsley Rose to introduce participants to the core concepts and research of Visible Learning.

Dr. John Hattie has been Professor of Education and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Insti-tute at the University of Melbourne, Australia, since March 2011. He was previously Professor of Education at the University of Auckland. His research interests are based on applying measurement models to education problems. He is president of the International Test Commission, served as advisor to various Ministers, and chaired the NZ performance-based research fund.

Ainsley Rose is the former director of curriculum and instruction for the Western Quebec School Board in Gatineau, Quebec. Ainsley was responsible for initiating many systemic changes that continue to impact teaching and learning within the school board today. With experience as an elementary and secondary class-room teacher and principal, as well as an instructor of graduate-level courses for administrators and pre-ser-vice teachers, Ainsley shares perspectives that resonate with all educators.

Spring often brings with it an increased busyness as school leaders turn their attention to a successful end

to the current school year while beginning preparations for the school year ahead. With the Supreme Court Case ruling there are still lots of questions to be answered and we will put out some information to Chapter Presidents next week to help support our members as we work through the implementation of the ruling.

For the past few weeks, I have been busy visiting Chap-ters, hearing from our members, and getting the oppor-tunity to see the remarkable leadership that they provide

leading their schools and programs. While I am unable to acknowledge all of those who have hosted me and shared the special initiatives within their schools I would like to thank the following Chapter Presidents for hosting my visits: Tricia McKay (Nanaimo/Ladysmith), Jameel Aziz, (Kamloops), Bev Forster (Bulkley Valley), Phil Barron (Coast Mountains) and Kevin Leach (Prince Rupert). Thank you to all for your warm welcomes and outstanding leadership.

I have the honour of visiting many school districts and those visits have en-hanced my understanding of our system and the importance of leadership. One of things that I have come to better understand is the remarkable energy that is provided by our members to ensure that our system is high performing and thriving. While we physically rely on our bodily energy systems to func-tion, organizational systems also rely on energy sources to thrive, function, and grow. It could be argued that business organizations are fueled by the energy of profitability and that spirituality is the energy source for religious organizations. I contend that public education has an energy source as well. The energy source for public education is respect.

A thriving public education system is imperative to the collective well-being of a country and its people. Furthermore, the guarantee of access to a quality public education is vital to the future of and development of any country. It should come as no surprise that in most instances, the majority of countries with the highest level of respect for public education and the work of educa-tors also produce the highest performing students.

As a school leader for nearly two decades, I have seen how increased work intensification, eroding resources, and lagging compensation have affected myself and my colleagues. With my visits to Chapters and the connections to my colleagues around the province I have come to a new and somewhat unexpected understanding. As I travel around the province to talk with school leaders and better understand the context of their work there is a noticeable difference in the perspective on the previously mentioned stressors if their work is well understood, respected, and valued by those around them. When

school leaders feel respected and valued those stressors seem to have less of an impact on their outlook and the energy with which they commit to their work. Conversely, the negative effects of job-related frustrations seem to be amplified in those districts where there is a noticeable lack of respect for the importance of school leadership.

This new understanding that comes from connecting with colleagues around the province confirms for me my belief that our work and the progress of our system is fueled by the energy source of respect. The optimist in me believes that like other energy systems respect can be renewable and inexhaustible if the conditions inside and outside of the system are optimal.

Invitation: Focus groups on the work of secondary principalsThe Work of Secondary School Principals is a five-year comparative research project in BC and Ontario and is funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Insight Grant. This study aims to better understand the work of secondary school principals, and how they approach and understand their work. This study also seeks to document how secondary school principals spend their time and explore the motives and factors that influence decision-making at the workplace.

How to participate: If you are a secondary school principal in British Columbia you are invited to participate in one of our focus groups, each with approximately 8-10 other principals. With your permission, the focus group will be audio-recorded and will take about two hours, with a possible follow-up interview. You will be asked about how you approach and understand your work, how you document your time, the motives and influences behind your work-related decision-making, as well as any challenges and possibilities inherent in your work.

Confidentiality: All information collected will be treated in strict confidence and no identifiable information will be included in any publications.

When and where: The focus groups will take place at UBC Vancouver Campus (where refreshment will be pro-vided) or via Skype between April 10 – 26 and May 8 – 25. A link will be sent allowing you to indicate which dates meet your convenience.
