Within individual universities and colleges, the strategic management of the processes and relationships this creates will be crucial to future impact and success.

Business and Community Engagement (BCE) is a term being used to describe the holistic, strategic management of relationships between academic institutions and external organisations and individuals.

BCE is focused around four dimensions:• Employer engagement• Lifelong learning• Knowledge transfer (and exchange)• Public, community & cultural engagement

In order for BCE to become "business as usual", its processes need to be deeply embedded throughout an institution – beyond dedicated units or individuals who may be leading current activities.

Practitioners (current and potential) need skills, systems and processes to enable them to seamlessly integrate new and existing engagement activity as a regular part of what they do.

Internal management, support and enabling services need to be able to actively support a BCE-driven strategies in a consistent way across their operations.
