NSS 2011: Brunel Business School in the top 5 in London

In this year’s National Student Survey, Brunel Business School successfully managed to reach the top 30 for Student Experience helping Brunel to become the UK’s most improved university for student satisfaction. The Business School also now finds itself in the top 25 for Research Power.

The Business School’s contribution to this result has been significant with the overall satisfaction rising from 66% to 85%. The impact of our success has seen the Business School rise from 89th position out of 93 UK Business Schools in 2010, to 29th position out of 94 UK Business Schools in 2011.

Commented, Zahir Irani, Head of BBS “The Business School’s performance is nothing short of outstanding given the size of our Undergraduate student population, and demonstrates that the student community has responded well to our efforts of engagement through our Business Life programme.”

Professional Accreditation update

Accreditation confirmed for MSc Applied Corporate Brand ManagementThe Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) recently confirmed accreditation for the Business School’s new MSc Applied Corporate Brand Management. It also confirmed that the programme met the qualification criterion for entry to the CIM’s Chartered Postgraduate

Diploma in Marketing. This means that graduates of the MSc Applied Corporate Brand Management will enjoy a fast track route to Chartered membership of the CIM.

The MSc Applied Corporate Brand Management will be offered for the first time from September 2011. The course benefits from the active involvement of an Advisory Board comprising senior professionals from the world of corporate brand management who have had input into course content and delivery and who will provide guidance and feedback to students over the duration of the programme. It is also expected a number of work placements will be on offer to students on the course that will enable them to apply the knowledge they have gained either in-house or within a corporate brand management consultancy.

John Balmer, Professor of Corporate Brand Marketing and Director of Brunel’s Centre for Research in Marketing, commented “This is great news for students of the course and of course testimony to the quality and relevance of the programme’s content.”

Brunel Business School’s BSc Business and Management (Marketing) and MSc Marketing are also accredited by the CIM.

Full exemptions for MSc Global Supply Chain Management GraduatesThe Business School recently learnt that students who graduate from the MSc in Global Supply Chain Management course will get full exemption from the educational requirements for the Chartered Membership with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Earlier this year, the MSc in Global Supply Chain Management was formally accredited by the CILT (UK); it already enjoys accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS).

Accounting Pathway granted Partner in Learning Status

One recent development in the accounting pathway is that we have been granted partner in learning status by the ICAEW. This means that our students will now be able to get access to the ICAEW graduate recruitment team and that staff teaching on exemption modules can get access to ICAEW material for their teaching.

update on the new Business School BuildingAs is clear from the congestion caused by the one way system, work on the Eastern Gateway Building is proceeding at a very fast pace. The contractor (Laing O’Rourke) is trying to complete the building to a stage called “Practical Completion” where it can be formally handed over to the university, although a list of agreed tasks could still remain to be done. These might be internal snagging or some final finishes, landscaping, etc. The target for this is Christmas. However this is a very ambitious plan and January 2012 is probably more realistic.

When we have taken possession it remains to procure, deliver and install the fixtures and fittings; furniture, computers, AV installations and other moveable equipment. We are hoping to procure furniture examples shortly and are planning to let staff view these in situ in the new building.

Finally we have to pick a time for the move of the Business School. It is felt that just before Easter is too risky given some procurement lead times so we are considering a week after Easter where we can squeeze the move in between examination organisation. At present the most likely date is the week commencing 21st May. When the date is confirmed we will install a large countdown clock somewhere and start it running. We will also be starting to ask people about their movements (holidays, overseas trips, etc.) around that time as everybody will have a massive amount of packing and unpacking to do!

Business Life takes shapeFollowing intensive work from the Business Life Team over the last quarter of 2011 the Business Life Programmes takes a much larger shape in the year to come. A group of around 20 stakeholders deliberated on a two day ‘Away Day’ in November and a major development of the programme will be rolled out over the next few months.

All activities in BSS and partner activities (PCC, ASK, etc) related to the student employability now fall under a carefully planned, cohesive and far reaching employability programme running parallel to the academic study of students on all levels in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Business Life is run in partnership with the Placement and Careers Centre and Brunel Library Service (ASK).

Business Life employability Programme… open to students, alumni and business!Current BBS students are key stakeholders, but the programme in its new shape includes potential employers of BBS students, alumni and potential students, who will hopefully choose BBS because it offers them this value added to the standard offering of education.

Activities organised with employers and the professional community in and out of the University, are carefully planned into the Business Life programme of events to ensure that throughout their entire stay with BBS students have abundant opportunities to enhance their core employability skills and experience real life job tools.

CAPCo exhibits exclusively for MBA students at earls CourtOn 25th November MBA students visited Capital & Counties Properties PLC (Capco), a major property investment and development company in London. The inaugural visit was part of a series of company visits that will run throughout the year, giving MBA students firsthand experience on how businesses operate. The visit offered a unique insight into two major construction and redevelopment projects run by Capco.

The business trip which was followed by a Q&A session with the Director of Investment and Director of Planning was an occasion to examine in more depth the complexities of the project, and to create connections between classroom theory and the reality of business practice. MBA student Shekar Kamble commented: “This trip was an excellent exposure for my management studies – to understand the challenges in the Real Estate & Development Market in terms of strategic planning, sustainability, urban marketing, revenues, investment and market risks. The amount of learning through Capco was incredible!”

Students were engaged by the extent of the challenges involved in these projects, as Elizabeth Huang commented: “The visit to Capital & Counties was highly interesting because it allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the firm’s grand vision, their strategies and the extraordinary level of complexity they have to deal with in order to achieve their objectives. As a former Chinese urban planner, I’m also very impressed with fact that, despite all the challenges, they have gone to great lengths to strike a good balance between social responsibility and commercial success.”
