McFalls fights for cafeteria

Senior Kaylee Verble received some great news in early January, she was the only female in the country accepted into the Vocal Performance with a specializa-tion in Musical Theatre program at New York University during its early decision period. The other female accepted was from Canada and a few male students were also selected.

“It’s a huge accomplishment,” said CAK High School Counselor Nancy Moore. “It’s the best program in the country and for her to be the only female selected is just fantas-tic. We’re really proud of Kaylee.”

When David McFalls heard about a Town Hall Meeting being held to discuss the current cafeteria campaign at CAK, he immediately offered his support.

One month later, he was suited up in a hard hat, protective goggles and a bulls-eye t-shirt as students from two second grade classes took turns throwing pies at him.

“I thought it would be a fun way to motivate the students to ask their parents to attend the Town Hall Meeting regarding our proposed cafeteria commons building,” McFalls said.

Frank Merry, Director of Advancement, worked with McFalls to organize the student challenge

and the rest was up to the students. Approximately 200 people attended the Town Hall Meeting on November 19 and the 2nd grade classes had the highest percentage of participation.

Who won the pie-throwing, how-ever, remains a question.

“I think it was a tie,” McFalls said with a smile. “The middle school gym was ‘rockin’ with energy. I loved it!”

To date, the cafeteria campaign has raised $385,000 of the total need of $950,000. The Gift/Pledge deadline is January 21 and all pledges must be paid by May 31, 2011.

The cafeteria will not be built by this fall unless 100% of the funds have been given/pledged by January 21. For more in-formation on how to help, visit www.cakwarriors.com/giving.

Leadership Corner:

The Capstone Project can best be compared to an Eagle Scout project or an internship with a company. The following four paragraphs are an excerpt from a State of Tennessee docu-ment regarding the project. The Capstone Project allows students to learn about them-selves by moving an idea or dream toward a topic of inter-est, specialization, community need, or career choice. Next, students locate the right people (mentors) to help them and to link them with community resources. Throughout the proj-ect, students demonstrate their abilities to apply what they have learned during twelve years of study. At the same time, they explore their readiness for college and the workplace. The Capstone Project has five core components: • an approved proposal, containing the research question;• documented research and contact hours with a mentor;• a short written paper, using MLA documentation;• an oral presentation that demonstrates the research and knowledge learned;• a review panel that evaluates the project. Students are expected to spend a minimum of 40 hours of work on their Capstone Project.

The word capstone suggests a completion, an ending, an appropriate “topping off.” As such, The Capstone Project synthesizes previous learning, questions thoroughly, draws connections among subjects, offers new interactions with ideas and people, results in a showcased product, and sub-mits the student in charge of the project to a review and evaluation by a committee. The work of the student must be documented sufficiently, so that reflection and presentation may take place. Students will use their spiritual gifts, will discover more about their individual talents and take pride in demonstrating their learning as they prepare for a success-ful future. Capstone experiences and relationships empower students to develop their leadership skills, sense of character, and self-esteem. Schools and communities also participate energetically in The Capstone Project. Teachers and counselors become advisors, helping students choose their topics and categories. Commu-nity members become mentors, contacts for job-shadowing, and partners in service. As schools and community members partner with students in learning by doing, these future citi-zens view society and the issues within a community in new ways. At the completion of The Capstone Project, seniors will professionally present their projects to a panel of teachers, mentors, administrators, and community members.

2011 TALENT SHOW Dust off those dance shoes, tune up the vocal chords

and get ready for the 2011 CAK Talent Show! This year’s show on Saturday, January 29th, will mark the

14th year of this annual show!

Any CAK student is eligible to enter. There will be two sections of the competitition. The elementary

age students, grades K-5, will perform on stage in the CAK Campus Center at 5:00 p.m.

The Middle and High School students will take to the stage at 7:00 p.m. Admission charge for the show

will be Adults: $6.00, Students, $3.00.

Entry forms may be picked up at each school’s recep-tion desk. They should be returned to Mrs. Filyaw by

Monday, January 24th.

Congratulations!Peggy Burnett (4th Grade) received notification last

month that she had met all the requirements established by the Certification Commission of the

Executive Board of the Association of Christian Schools International to earn her “Lifetime” certification.

Other Lifetime members at CAK are: Sara Baker, Sherry Earl, Connie Gibson, Sharon Goodman, Janet McLean,

Nancy Moore, Debbie Moye, Bobbye Stanfield, Adrienne Toro, Karen Townley, Jane Williams and Greg Wilson.

The East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Associa-tion held auditions for the Jr. Clinic Honor Band. Two students, Emily Tefft (9th grade) and Grant Roberts (8th grade) successfully placed in the Honor Band. The event was held at Oak Ridge High School, December 3rd and 4th.

Emily placed 3rd chair flute in the Ninth Grade Band. Grant placed 4th chair trom-bone in the Silver Band.

The Jr. Clinic consists of a Ninth Grade Band and Gold or Silver Band for grades 6th-8th. Roughly 1000 students auditioned for Jr. Clinic. These bands represent the top 1% of band students in the middle area of East Ten-nessee.

Congratulations to Emily and Grant for their hard work. We are thrilled to have these students represent CAK in Jr. Clinic Honor Band!

CAK Girls and Boys Cross Country Teams had a season full of fun times from summer camp to qualifying for State this year.

Both teams had a great season this year and feel very blessed to have Kely Braswell as the CAK Cross Country Coach.

Girls took 1st Place in Regionals and Boys took 2nd Place on October 28th at Victor Ash Park.

Girls Team – Abby Holt 2nd place, Alison Burg 4th place, Emily Berry 8th place, Ashlyne Page 14th place, Minta Ray, Hannah Grove and Christa Hammaker.

Boys Team – Clayton Odell 10th place, Blake Brashear 13th, Chris Millis 15th, James Berry, Charlie Morgan, Brandon Row and Alex Hoppestad.
