NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO PAY YOUR SCHOOL CHARGES

AND CLAIM THE:

EDUCATION TAX REFUND

All parents are reminded that you shortly may be able to claim up to 50% of eligible education expenses either

via your 2009/10 tax return or using the Education Tax Refund Claim 2010 form (available from July 2010).

If you are in receipt of the Family Tax Benefit Part A and have full care of a child enrolled in secondary

education, you may claim up to $779 for each child. Special rules exist to cater for shared care arrangements.

Even if you don’t normally lodge a Tax Return, you may still be eligible to claim this refund.

Eligible education expenses include computers, printers, USB flash devices, home internet connections,

computer software for educational use, school text books & stationery and prescribed tools of trade.

Claims cannot be made for school fees, uniform items, camps/excursions, sporting equipment, musical

instruments, school photos, transport etc.

The 2010 Curriculum and Service Charge at Ballarat High School is not fully eligible, however it has been

determined that a portion may be claimed as follows;

Years 7,8,10,11,12 Full charge - $265, Eligible portion - $85

Year 9 Full charge - $330, Eligible portion - $125

Students studying a VET subject may also be able to claim a portion of the fee. A full listing is available on

request from the General Office or from the School Website.

Receipts will be required to be kept and provided on request of the ATO. However advice provided to schools

indicates that BHS Family Statements will be accepted, in the absence of an original receipt.

More details on the ETR can be obtained by collecting a Fact Sheet from the BHS General Office, visiting

www.ato.gov.au or phoning the ATO on 13 28 61.

MINERS REST BUS TRAVELLERS

Following the introduction of the MYKI ticketing system by the State Government, travellers on the Miners Rest

bus service to BHS required different arrangements.

Transitional arrangements were offered to parents for Semester 1. However these are unable to be continued,

and parents will now be required to purchase Semester 2 MYKI passes from the Ballarat Railway Station. Those

eligible under the Conveyance Allowance regulations will be reimbursed this cost in December 2010.

Semester 1 MYKI passes expire on 31 July 2010.

Semester 2 MYKI passes will be valid from 1 July 2010 to 28 February 2011.

To obtain a Semester 2 pass you will need to;

Step 1 – Collect a Student MYKI Registration Form from the General Office

Step 2 – Go to the Ballarat Railway Station with;

Completed Student MYKI Registration Form

Current Semester 1 MYKI Pass

Current Student Concession Card

$173.00

Step 3 – V/Line staff will process this while you wait.

Congratulations to Joseph Graffeo for winning a place in

Melbourne Theatre Company's Youth Scholarship Program

2010. Joe will spend a week of the upcoming holidays in

Melbourne working with the company.

MTC’s Youth Scholarship Program gives students the

opportunity to access a unique theatre-learning experience.

The Youth Scholarship Program also gives students the

supportive space needed to develop their own voices and

sense of identity and to begin to develop their lifetime

goals. Best wishes to him and we hope to hear all about it

upon his return!

And of course the School production is THIS WEEKEND!

Jump online and visit the Ballarat High School Website to

see if there are still tickets available for tonight or tomorrow

nights show! Miss Jessica Kelly.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MIPS TEAM

Managed Individual Pathways

The Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) program helps all students aged 15 and over from compulsory schooling into further education, training and employment. We are looking forward to working with everyone this year and encourage you to access and utilise the resources of the MIPs office. We are located next to the library and are available from 8:30am – 4:30pm daily. MIPs & Careers Information Newsletter: Our Newsletter is up and running again this year, and is distributed to all Year 10, 11 & 12 students via school email. The newsletter contains information relevant to all student pathways and is a comprehensive resource that students should refer to when pursuing their pathway. Example item:

Applications are open for those aged between 17 and 25 years for four flying training scholarships offered jointly by the Royal Australian Air Force Association and the Royal Victorian Aero Club. Sponsored mainly by Mobil Aviation, they take the successful candidates through to the General Flying Progress Test stage of the Private Pilots Licence and valued at about $6,500 each. They are an ideal entry point for those seeking a long term career or a recreational participation in aviation. Application forms: Collect personally from the Royal Victorian Aero Club’s counters at Moorabbin Airport or Coldstream Airfield; Info: www.rvac.com.au or ph 9580 0088; Applications close: 31 July, 2010.

Students will complete one week of work experience; either Monday 26

th July – Friday 30

th July, or Monday 2nd

August – Friday 6th August. Thank you to Parents / Guardians who have been assisting in the organisation of

work experience, and completing the required paperwork with students. This year all Year 10 students will participate in Work Experience, and all students by now should have secured a placement. If students are still trying to secure a placement they need to see MIPs staff urgently. All paperwork is to be completed and returned to the MIPs office before the end of Term 2.

To subscribe to Careers Newsletter, please email your request to [email protected] or visit http://www.ballaraths.vic.edu.au to view.
