ULTRANET: Parents please be aware that due to the introduction of the Ultranet,
we need to ensure that our school records are accurate. If you have changed your
details eg address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, please notify the General
Office ASAP.
Staff Changes I wish to inform the school community that I will be taking leave effectively from Thursday 17th June until Monday 4th October. During my leave, I will be visiting schools and other educational institutions in Paris and the UK. Furthermore, I will be having discussions with personnel from UNESCO and members of the new UK government regarding their educational policies. In my absence, Mr Gary Palmer will be Principal. Gary brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position and I have no doubt that the school will maintain its high expectations under Gary’s leadership. Ms Michele Riethoff will become the Principal responsible for School Improvement and Mr Shane Mathison will become the Assistant Principal responsible for student management in the Middle Years. Ms Jessica Sargeant will be returning from leave and will be taking up her position as Principal of Middle Years in term 3.

If you are in receipt of the Family Tax Benefit Part A and have full care of a child enrolled in secondary
education, you may claim up to $779 for each child. Special rules exist to cater for shared care arrangements.
Even if you don’t normally lodge a Tax Return, you may still be eligible to claim this refund.
Eligible education expenses include computers, printers, USB flash devices, home internet connections,
computer software for educational use, school text books & stationery and prescribed tools of trade.
Claims cannot be made for school fees, uniform items, camps/excursions, sporting equipment, musical
instruments, school photos, transport etc.
The 2010 Curriculum and Service Charge at Ballarat High School is not fully eligible, however it has been
determined that a portion may be claimed as follows;

Year 9 Full charge - $330, Eligible portion - $125
Students studying a VET subject may also be able to claim a portion of the fee. A full listing is available on

indicates that BHS Family Statements will be accepted, in the absence of an original receipt.
More details on the ETR can be obtained by collecting a Fact Sheet from the BHS General Office, visiting
www.ato.gov.au or phoning the ATO on 13 28 61.

Congratulations to Joseph Graffeo for winning a place in
Melbourne Theatre Company's Youth Scholarship Program
2010. Joe will spend a week of the upcoming holidays in
Melbourne working with the company.
MTC’s Youth Scholarship Program gives students the
opportunity to access a unique theatre-learning experience.
The Youth Scholarship Program also gives students the
supportive space needed to develop their own voices and
sense of identity and to begin to develop their lifetime
goals. Best wishes to him and we hope to hear all about it
upon his return!
And of course the School production is THIS WEEKEND!
Jump online and visit the Ballarat High School Website to

A MESSAGE FROM THE MIPS TEAM
Managed Individual Pathways
The Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) program helps all students aged 15 and over from compulsory schooling into further education, training and employment. We are looking forward to working with everyone this year and encourage you to access and utilise the resources of the MIPs office. We are located next to the library and are available from 8:30am – 4:30pm daily. MIPs & Careers Information Newsletter: Our Newsletter is up and running again this year, and is distributed to all Year 10, 11 & 12 students via school email. The newsletter contains information relevant to all student pathways and is a comprehensive resource that students should refer to when pursuing their pathway. Example item:
Applications are open for those aged between 17 and 25 years for four flying training scholarships offered jointly by the Royal Australian Air Force Association and the Royal Victorian Aero Club. Sponsored mainly by Mobil Aviation, they take the successful candidates through to the General Flying Progress Test stage of the Private Pilots Licence and valued at about $6,500 each. They are an ideal entry point for those seeking a long term career or a recreational participation in aviation. Application forms: Collect personally from the Royal Victorian Aero Club’s counters at Moorabbin Airport or Coldstream Airfield; Info: www.rvac.com.au or ph 9580 0088; Applications close: 31 July, 2010.
Students will complete one week of work experience; either Monday 26
th July – Friday 30
th July, or Monday 2nd
August – Friday 6th August. Thank you to Parents / Guardians who have been assisting in the organisation of
work experience, and completing the required paperwork with students. This year all Year 10 students will participate in Work Experience, and all students by now should have secured a placement. If students are still trying to secure a placement they need to see MIPs staff urgently. All paperwork is to be completed and returned to the MIPs office before the end of Term 2.
To subscribe to Careers Newsletter, please email your request to [email protected] or visit http://www.ballaraths.vic.edu.au to view.
