Wells Fargo is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month and the 2014 Salute to Black Women Business Conference & Awards Luncheon honorees.

Throughout our Nation's history, American women have led movements for social and economic justice, made groundbreaking scientic discoveries, enriched our culture with stunning works of art and literature, and charted bold directions in our foreign policy. They have served our country with valor, from the battleelds of the Revolutionary War to the deserts of Iraq and mountains of Afghanistan. During Women's History Month, we recognize the victories, struggles, and stories of the women who have made our country what it is today.

This month, we are reminded that even in America, freedom and justice have never come easily. As part of a centuries-old and ever-evolving movement, countless women have put their shoulder to the wheel of progress -- activists who gathered at Seneca Falls and gave expression to a righteous cause; trailblazers who deed convention and shattered glass ceilings; millions who claimed control of their own bodies, voices, and lives. Together, they have pushed our Nation toward equality, liberation, and acceptance of women's right -- not only to choose their own destinies -- but also to shape the futures of peoples and nations.

Through the grit and sacrice of generations, American women and girls have gained greater opportunities and more representation than ever before. Yet they continue to face workplace discrimination, a higher risk of sexual assault, and an earnings gap that will cost the average woman hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of her working lifetime.

As women ght for their seats at the head of the table, my Administration offers our unwavering support. The rst bill I signed as President was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which made it easier for women to challenge pay discrimination. Under the Affordable Care Act, we banned insurance companies from charging women more because of their gender, and we continue to defend this law against those who would let women's bosses inuence their health care decisions.

Last year, recognizing a storied history of patriotic and courageous service in our Armed Forces, the United States military opened ground combat units to women in uniform. We are also encouraging more girls to explore their passions for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and taking action to create economic opportunities for women across the globe. Last fall, we nalized a rule to extend overtime and minimum wage protections to homecare workers, 90 percent of whom are women. And this January, I launched a White House task force to protect students from sexual assault.

As we honor the many women who have shaped our history, let us also celebrate those who make progress in our time. Let us remember that when women succeed, America succeeds. And from Wall Street to Main Street, in the White House and on Capitol Hill -- let us put our Nation on the path to success.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2014 as Women's History Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month and to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, 2014, with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. I also invite all Americans to visit www.WomensHistoryMonth.gov to learn more about the generations of women who have left enduring imprints on our history.

Each year we at the Black Business Association (BBA) believe in honoring and celebrating the work of women at all levels of society. On behalf of the board of directors of the BBA, we thank you for sharing with us the 2014 Salute to Black Women Business Conference, Vendor Faire and Awards Luncheon. This year we stand in solidarity with the National Women's History Project (NWHP) and sharing with their theme, “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment.”

As we look at the work of the women we are proud to honor today, they embrace the essence of this year's theme. Congresswoman Barbara Lee receives the Lifetime Achievement Award. Karen Slade is this year's Executive Leadership Awardee. Dr. Cherilyn Lee receives this year's Professional Excellence Award. The Community-based Business Award is given to Cherice Calhoun. Our Emerging Leader Award goes to Starlett Quarles. The Young Achievement Award goes to Autumn Williams. Dr. Ora Mobley Sweeting receives the Pioneer Award. Barbara Walden is our Entrepreneur Pioneer Awardee and Gwendolyn F. Green receives the Civil Rights Activist Award.

Our Salute to Black Women Business Conference is designed to assist African American women of all ages in navigating the current economic environment by offering workshops focusing on business and personal financial security, improvement, and empowerment. This year we are proud to again have Northrop Grumman sponsor a special interactive workshop, “Role Models for Success,” for young ladies between 13-18 years of age to learn about business ownership from successful women entrepreneurs and corporate leaders. We especially want to thank Vicky Harper-Hall and Gloria Pualani for helping to make it happen.

For every one honoree there are thousands of others African American women that also deserved to be recognized. As a people, we should acknowledge and pay homage to African American women, not just for one day or one week or one month, but everyday of the year. About the Black Business Association

Since 1970, the Black Business Association (BBA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization,

headquartered in Los Angeles, has championed thousands of African-American businesses.

Nationally, the BBA has access and influence with more than 100,000 African-American-

owned and women/minority-owned firms via strategic alliances with W/MBE trade

associations nationwide.

Our MissionThe Black Business Association’s mission is to advocate and promote the development of

African-American owned businesses with the goal of creating a firm economic base that

support the self-determination and survival of the African-American and urban community by:

C Identifying and creating financial opportunities for the growth and stability of

African-American owned businesses;

C Being a community voice that advocates for the success of small businesses;

AdvocacyThe Black Business Association maintains very effective working relationships with elected

and appointed officials for the support of African-American business development. Locally,

statewide and in Washington, DC, we are constantly aware of pending legislation that might

affect our member’s businesses, their growth and even their ability to conduct business. When

legislation is being considered that affects our mission, the BBA quickly mobilizes to work with

key policy makers to support, defeat or modify the bill and pursue the BBA position.

As an organization, we are constantly at the helm, securing innovative means and policies that protect our constituency and their business interests.

Norma T. Hollis helps people find, live and share their authentic voice. She defines

authentic voice as the “person you were born to be” and “the voice you were sent to the world to share”. She has developed the 'Authentic Voice System' and is transforming lives worldwide with a focus on helping people align their gifts and talents within fulfilling and sustainable career paths.

Norma offers many products and services that enable people to know themselves on a deep level, monetize their gifts and talents, become self-sufficient through their gifts and talents then step into their authentic voice and life assignment.

Her path to authenticity began in the field of education as an early childhood development specialist. She directed private and non-profit child care programs in Michigan and California. Most noted for her work with Head Start, Norma reached the top of this industry, directing Charles Drew University's $10 million program serving 1500 children. In her second career Norma was an entrepreneur in the professional speaking industry. She was the first African American woman to own a speakers bureau focused on African Americans and she started the very first directory of African American speakers on the internet. This led her to understand not only what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur but also how speakers use their natural gifts and talents to share their authentic voice through their message and delivery on stage.

In the process she gained the title of America's Leading Authentic Voice Doctor®. Clients marveled at her ability to help them find their message as a speaker. Others were impressed at her ability to help them adjust to the challenge of living their message regardless of the obstacles. Still others benefited from Norma's ability to help them find comfortable ways to express themselves in sustainable careers.

She is now in her third career as a thought-leader, mentor, transformational speaker, trainer, author and authority in the field of authenticity. Norma has an international clientele of speakers, authors and entrepreneurs as well as others who seek to follow the path of their authentic voice. She currently certifies Authenticity Ambassadors and Coaches to expand the message of authenticity in corporate, medical, youth, personal development and community environments. Dr. Gloria ZuurveenFounder, Branch of Christ Outreach Ministry (BCOM)

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen is a past honoree and the founder/President and CEO, of PACE NEWS since 1995.

PACE NEWS is a city and county adjudicated newspaper of general circulation which was started as a voice to call

attention to many critical issues, especially education, affecting the African American community in the Greater

Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Dr. Zuurveen is the first African American woman appointed to the Los

Angeles Press Club Board of Directors in its 100 years history.

Dr. Zuurveen is a licensed ministered and founder of Branch of Christ Outreach Ministry (BCOM), an outreach

ministry whose purpose is to halt biblical illiteracy among saints and unbelievers alike through its weekly Bible

Literacy Training (BLT). Dr. Zuurveen is a member of Park Windsor Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev.

Terrell Taylor. Dr. Zuurveen has received numerous awards and recognition one of them being selected as the

Small Business of the Year by California State Senator District #26, former Senator Curren D. Price, who now serves

as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 9th District. On this day, I too, salute and say congratulations to all the 2014

most deserving honorees and a special thanks to the Black Business Association (BBA) for allowing me the

opportunity to have a role in this auspices occasion.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee is a forceful and progressive voice in Congress,

dedicated to social and economic justice, international peace, and civil and human rights.

First elected in 1998 to represent California's 9th Congressional District, the Democratic lawmaker has established a

reputation for principled and independent stands, unafraid to take on the tough issues and speak her mind for her

constituents, for a more just America, and for a safer world. As a social worker by profession, being an advocate for

people in dealing with the federal bureaucracy has been a priority.

She has aggressively represented the needs of the underserved and vulnerable people in her district and

throughout the U.S., vigorously advocating for a wide range of social and economic concerns and bread and butter

issues that affect their daily lives. She has earned a reputation as an effective legislator who works in a bipartisan

manner to achieve results in congressional committees. In 2008, she authored a book about her life experiences.

The Congresswoman has been a strong proponent of safe communities, affordable housing, the homeless, low

income energy assistance, job training, making health care affordable and universal, just immigration policies, the

establishment of a living wage, and protection of the right of women to make decisions about their reproductive

health. She is the immediate past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and former co-chair of the Progressive

Caucus.

Her accomplishments are many, including authoring or co-authoring every major piece of legislation dealing with

global HIV/AIDS issues since she was elected to Congress. This includes legislation that created the President's

Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, and the position of

Special Advisor for Orphans and Vulnerable Children. She has secured millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS prevention,

education, treatment and care services in Alameda County.

An early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War, the congresswoman repeatedly proposed legislation seeking

early U.S. troop withdrawal. In 2007, she successfully blocked funds from being used to establish permanent

military bases in Iraq. Her 2008 amendment requiring that any U.S. agreement to defend Iraq be expressly

authorized by Congress or be included in a Senate approved treaty was stripped from a defense bill under the threat

of a veto by President Bush.

Congresswoman Lee has been a leader in the bipartisan effort in Congress to end the ongoing genocide in Darfur,

Sudan, including the passage of legislation she authored to allow divestment from companies doing business in the

region.

The congresswoman has worked tirelessly to strengthen relations between the United States and its Caribbean

neighbors, promoting engagement and dialogue through educational exchange programs, travel, and fair trade,

including the ending of the ineffective embargo against Cuba. In 2005, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize

along with women from 150 countries as part of the international project – 1000 Women for Peace.

Congresswoman Lee began her political career as an intern in the office of her predecessor, former Congressman

and former Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, where she eventually became his Chief of Staff. Before being elected to

Congress, she served in the California State Assembly and in the California State Senate.

Entering her twenty plus years as Vice President / General Manager, is Karen Slade responsible for ensuring the station's Broadcast Operations adhere to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules and regulations. Karen is meeting the business challenges of the largest advertising revenue market with aggressive revenue targets through effective sales strategies and focused program offerings.

During her tenure Karen has increased the station's viability by doubling the effective radiating power from 2.25 watts to 5.6 watts, thus enhancing the station's reach and market penetration. Karen began by putting procedural infrastructure in place across departments from HR employment policy through automation of the audio music selection and commercial traffic systems. Selecting and updating account management software to current accounting systems that provide integrated solutions to an evolving broadcast business operation.

Open to new and innovative ways to build on the existing heritage KJLH Brand. Under current leadership the KJLH management team uses a multi-platform approach to create exciting, results driven marketing campaigns for clients. Enhancing the interactive listener experience through multimedia and social efforts, while building additional revenue streams for the company. The common thread inherent in all of these efforts is the stations' mission of community outreach and involvement.

As VP/GM Karen has been recognized by Radio Ink as one of the Most Influential African Americans in Radio, she has received many awards including the distinguished George Foster Peabody Award for significant and meritorious achievement and the NAACP Image Award for Humanitarian broadcast efforts.

A marketing professional, she has held a variety of sales leadership and management positions with Xerox Corporation. Karen was the Regional Sales Manager for the Southeast region of the United States, Senior Consultant for Customer and Marketing Education, Dealer Sales Manager, Project Manager and various field marketing and sales positions.

Karen has served on the advisory counsel of MOSTE (Mentoring Our Students Through Experience), formerly a board member of the Los Angeles Urban League and currently an active board member of NABOB (National Association Of Black Owned Broadcasters).

Karen received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Kent State University in Telecommunications and a Masters in Business Administration from Pepperdine University. Karen is currently completing the National Association of Broadcasters Executive Broadcast Leadership Program.

CHERILYN LEE, Ph.D., R.N., NP, CNHP, was born in Compton, CA. She completed her training as a Registered Nurse from Southwest Community College in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated as a Physician's Assistant from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences in L.A., CA, and later became a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Lee has a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition and is certified in Energy Medicine. She is also a Certified Natural Healthcare Professional.

Dr. Lee sees clients at Nutri-Med Integrated Healthcare Center, providing treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes, drug addiction, hepatitis, lupus, sarcoidosis, and more including: Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Pain Management, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Urinary Incontinence, Sciatica, Anti-Aging and Weight Management, Micro-Nutrient Testing, Cardiovascular Assessment/Risk Evaluation, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Musculature Reconditioning, Vitamin C IV Drip and Glutathione IV Push, and Glutathione nebulizer treatments for COPD, asthma and bronchitis (1/3 of her patients are cancer patients.) Dr. Lee recently published the audiobook “Written Before I Was Born” Her book is a story of tragedies and triumph that brings laughter and tears; but, above all, healing and joy. The happy ending is not really an ending at all, but a guide to make every day a new beginning full of purpose, positivity and power! The audiobook also has a meditation CD entitled “Detox the Mind and the Body Will Heal” with a detox recipe to start your day. As a speaker, author and actress (upcoming film), Dr. Lee enjoys teaching, healing and counseling.

Dr. Lee specializes in Early Detection Screenings (EDS). For instance, early screening of breast cancer by Thermography are available through her nonprofit. CRT screening is easy, painless, and radiation-free; FDA-approved and very accurate in detecting breast cancer years before other methods.

Also, she just launched “Beauty Shop Stroke Screenings” for EDS. These screenings will be held at beauty salons. Dr. Lee will write about these and more as a featured columnist for the BBA magazine.

Dr. Lee has received numerous awards, a few of which are: Ambassador for Peace through the Universal Peace Federation, the President's Call to Service Award 2010 for her volunteer service; Woman of the Year from the National Association of Professional Women 2010-11; Practitioner of the Year, which she has received for the past five years; Los Angeles Business Journal, a nominee. She is a member of the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE).

Recently honored as one of “Los Angeles' Most Influential African American Movers and

Shakers” by the Wave Newspaper, is a passionate, long time Starlett QuarlesCommunity Activist and Advocate for the progress of Black Los Angeles, and urban communities across the Country. A Third-Generation Angeleno and Community Builder, Ms. Quarles' family has been instrumental in the redevelopment of South Los Angeles' urban landscape through the Real Estate Development and Construction Industries. As a result, Community Building is in her DNA. Ms. Quarles' years of work in her family business has provided her with an uncanny knack for navigating Los Angeles' business & political landscapes, as well as her ability to interact effortlessly with the citizens of Black Los Angeles. Living out the logical evolution of her professional skills and experiences in the area of Community Economic Development, Ms. Quarles has strategically positioned herself to not only be a Voice for her Generation, but to also act as a resource for bringing her peers of Young Urban Professionals and community members together, with Business and Political Leaders, to tackle and discuss the problems challenging the Black Community.

For the last several years, she has been doing just that by organizing and hosting a series of public forums, expert panels, and interviews with some of LA's most influential leaders around the socioeconomic advancement of the Black Community. Past Interviewees have included: Mayor Eric Garcetti; Congresswoman Karen Bass; LA City Council President, Councilman Herb Wesson; and former City Councilmember Jan Perry.

In addition, Since 2010 Ms. Quarles has addressed a number of issues facing the Black Community on her weekly community-based, nationally-syndicated Internet TV Talk Show called “THE Dialogue with Starlett Quarles,” which attracts more than 300,000 monthly viewers. Past topics on THE Dialogue have included: Civic Engagement, Economic Development, Criminal Justice, Health, Education, Romantic Relationships, and Black Male Achievement.

A transcendent and dynamic personality with a savvy business acumen, Ms. Quarles has over a decade of training and professional experience in changing and reshaping urban landscapes. As a precursor to her professional success as an advocate and voice for urban planning and redevelopment, Ms. Quarles obtained a Bachelors Degree in Sociology with an emphasis on Ethnic and Racial Stratification from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

She also earned a Masters Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP), which placed emphasis on improving the organizational effectiveness of culturally diverse work environments. As a result, Ms. Quarles has a solid foundation in organizational development, marketing, real estate and community economic development. She is well-versed in multiculturalism, and often emphasizes diversity and cultural sensitivity in her marketing, branding and community outreach strategies.

Lastly, in line with her community development passion, Ms. Quarles also volunteers her time as a Board Member for several Professional Organizations and Programs. Some of which include: Board Chair and State Commissioner for the Baldwin Hills Conversancy, the founding Advisory Chair of the Real Estate Association Program- LA; a former Advisory Board Member for USC's Ross Minority Program in Real Estate; as well as a former Executive Committee Member of the Urban Land Institute-LA (ULI-LA), where she resigned in 2010 as Chair of UrbanPlan, ULI-LA's high school program geared towards teaching students the fundamentals of urban planning and community development.

Gwendolyn Florence Green is a longstanding respected and revered Civil Rights

Activist. Her community service has spanned over 60 years.

Gwen Green started her civil rights work in the mid-1950s with the NAACP in their regional office as a youth advisor fighting racial discrimination in Oakland.

In 1958 Gwen started working in politics and was one of the founders of the New Frontier Democratic Club, the largest African American club this side of the Mississippi.

In 1960 Gwen met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and began working as Administrative Assistant to the President of the Western Christian Leadership Conference (currently known as SCLC). She helped raise millions of dollars in Los Angeles for the civil rights work in the south. In 1963 Gwen was appointed Regional Coordinator for the “March on Washington” in states including California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Arizona. Two years later Gwen was appointed Assistant Director of SCOPE (a voter registration program prior to the passage of the voter rights bill).

In the 1970s Gwen was a Senior Deputy for Senator John Tunney. In the 1980's Gwen was a Council Aide for Councilman Robert Farrell and during that time she played a vital role in the campaign to rename Santa Barbara Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

During the 1980s Gwen worked along with Ophelia MacFadden in the establishment of the Home Care Workers Union SEIU Local 434(B). Currently Gwen is still working for the Union as a Community Outreach Director where she continues to advocate for the rights of its members to earn a fair living wage.

Gwen has also worked on numerous political campaigns over the years, such as; •I Tom Bradley for Mayor, •I Wilson Riles for Superintendent of Public Instruction, •I Alan Cranston for Congress,•I Robert Farrell for City Council,•I Frank Holoman for State Senator, •I Julian Dixon for Congress,•I Mervyn Dymally for Senator, Lt. Governor and Congressman, •I Yvonne Braithwaite Burke for Assemblywoman, Congresswoman and Supervisor, •I Mark Ridley Thomas for City Council and Supervisor, •I Herb Wesson for Assembly.

Gwen was recently recognized at the 50th anniversary of the New Frontier Democratic Club as one of its founding members. On March 21, 2011 she was awarded the “Woman of The Year” for the 8th Assembly District by the California State Legislature.

Gwen has enjoyed a lifetime of remarkable success in every avenue of her endeavors, while inspiring others through her achievements. A leader, forward thinker and an advocate for human rights, Gwen Green desires the appreciation and admiration of the community she has so tirelessly served.

Barbara Walden is one of the century's leading entrepreneur's. Having recently

celebrated 54 years as Founder and President of Barbara Walden Cosmetics, Inc., located in Marina Del Rey, CA, she continues to utilize her success as an instrument to help others. Barbara Walden is recognized and honored as one of the century's leading role models in the world of beauty, and highly praised and regaled as a woman of many humanitarian deeds and efforts. Actress turned beauty mogul, Barbara was the forerunner in designing the first cosmetic line for the African American women. Barbara authored the highly acclaimed beauty book, "Easy Glamour" published by Wm Morrow & Company in 1983. The book quickly established a new precedent in beauty, hair and skin care for women.

By 1969 this ambitious young women from New Jersey had already won a major contest at Universal Studios. Among 350 young ladies, 7 where chosen to appear as Mickey Rooney's "Satins' Seven Sinners" in The Private Lives of Adam and Eve, and were given contracts. Her impressive film credits include The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston, What A Way to Go with Paul Newman and Shirley McClaine, Global Affair with Bob Hope, Night of the Quarter Moon with Nat King Cole, and in 1977 made a come back appearance in Disney's Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster; along with being chosen as one of the three "Bat Girls" for the LA Dodgers and the Hollywood Stars Celebrity game with Mrs. Sammy Cohen and Mrs. Milton Burle, hosted by Nat King Cole.

As if fate had a way of intervening, there were two elements in Barbara's acting career that would eventually guide her into the world of beauty. The first element was that she was against the way the film industry categorized and portrayed Blacks, depicting them with dialogue consisting of "Yassum" and "Nossuh." Barbara found it difficult to remain silent, often voicing her disapproval to directors, casting directors, writers, and anyone who would listen, including her own agent. Much to the dismay of her agent, Barbara was adamantly against how Blacks were being portrayed, that she turned down roles in two major films. The Raintree County with Montgomery Cliff and the multimillion dollar epic, Cleopatra, with Elizabeth Taylor. The issue was the spark that ignited the flame, motivating her to help found the Beverly Hills-Hollywood chapter of the NAACP.

Studio make-up was another area that Barbara felt unflattering to her sensitive black skin. Researching, Barbara tested and tried a wide array of over-the-counter cosmetic lines, desperate to find one that would compliment her skin tone. Dissatisfied with the lack of products, Barbara launched Barbara Walden Cosmetics in 1960 on just $750. What originally began as a door-to-door marketing push in the Watt's section of Los Angeles, several years later launched at I..Magnin's in Beverly Hills and has been sold throughout fine department stores including Bloomingdales, Macy's, Marshall Fields, May Company Department Stores just to name a few. Her skin care, makeup, fragrance and is popular with women of all ethnic groups and was the Official Makeup of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and is sold in China, Europe, and Africa.

Ms. Walden has always been a champion for the less fortunate and under privileged starting with lessons learned from her Mother at an early age, "that it is always good to do for others." Ms. Walden attends a church for the homeless located in Venice, California, The Bible Tabernacle. Every major holiday you will find Barbara Walden on skid row in Los Angeles at the Fred Jordon Mission doing her work for the homeless. The week before Mothers Day is the Mothers Day Beauty Week, Sunday Mothers Day is the Mothers Day Brunch on the streets, Thanksgiving for Thanksgiving Day Dinner. The children's Christmas Party which is the biggest party on skid row, September back to school with a clothing drive so that every child will receive something new to wear to school.

The probative value of ’s technological innovation begins with her Cherice Calhounintent. When she started BlackNLA in March of 2000, she wanted to produce a means of finding “at the drop of the hat” African American resources such as physicians, lawyers, organizations, service providers and events that would be of interest to her and her friends. At that time she found a lot of web sites, but none provided the array of services she envisioned. Some of the sites promoted businesses while others promulgated professional or personal services. “I didn’t want to remember 20 different web addresses and I wanted to retrieve information in a relatively easy manner,” recalled Cherice. Amazingly, Cherice didn’t have a background in technology before she plunged into the discipline. Once she realized the need for the website she sat down with Microsoft FrontPage, a couple of books on the Internet and started learning how to put together a website. Her first website showcased events and businesses, but because she fashioned the site to accommodate the feedback from visitors to the site. The site now boasts over 15 sections including travel, career center, news, organizations and a diverse range of other services. The idea was to use technology to bring the community closer together. BlackNLA.com is renowned for disseminating information to urban professionals living, working and visiting the greater Los Angeles area. The distinguishable aspect of BlackNLA.com is the varied information it presents, inclusive of promotional advertisements, upcoming events, networking opportunities and community outreach information. “We provide this at no cost to the community,“ says Cherice. Her aim is to enhance Black Businesses, Organizations and Networking Opportunities through wider exposure to potential customers. BlackNLA is constantly evolving and has expanded to also provide offline services to include after work social and networking mixers, movie screenings, travel getaways, special events and an annual toy drive. On the horizon, BlackNLA will add components such as Entertainment, BlackNLA Recommends, LA Fashion and more. Unlike most sites, which are controlled by boardrooms, users of the service shape BlackNLA. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, her father Daniel A. Williams, Sr., was Ora Williamsa college professor and respected political counselor; served as a long-time member of the state's Democratic Executive Committee and was the first Black member of the Jury Commission for Cumberland County, North Carolina. Her mother, Oramae Lovell Williams tragically passed away only days after giving birth to her and her twin brother. Dr. Daniel A. Williams, Jr. The widowed Daniel Williams Sr. later married Mae Rudd Williams, who served as Supervisor of Cumberland County's schools for almost 35 years. These influences, combined to inspire Ora Williams to their emulation. After completing her studies at Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Johnson C. Smith University in 1947.

In 1949, Ora Williams enrolled at Columbia University Teacher's College to pursue a Master's Degree. In 1951 she married Ezekiel Mobley, Sr. In 1953, Ora Mobley worked as a Social Investigator for the New York City Department of Welfare before the births of her two children, Ezekiel and Candida. Throughout the 1950's and the subsequent decades, Mobley's participation in the political and social life of New York was a catalyst for creation, growth and change. John Henrick Clarke characterized her work as "singularly outstanding in the Harlem community," She was actively involved in voter registration drives and political campaigns for Adam Powell Sr., Charles Rangel, Hubert Humphrey, Percy Sutton, Lloyd Dickens, Basil Patterson, John V. Lindsay, Judge Henry R. Williams and others. In 1958, along with Congressman Adam Powell, Jr., she was invited to address the New Era Democratic Club in Harlem. Her speech "The Unification of the Negro Vote” prompted her membership in the Club. Later that same year Mobley co-chaired the Construction Committee for P.S 154, a new elementary school to replace an antiquated and sub-standard facility which was later renamed the "Harriet Tubman School and finally completed in 1964. In 1963, Ora Mobley's concerns with the effectiveness of the massive metropolitan-wide New York City school system led to one of the first Community Conferences on Decentralization. In 1964 she organized the Central Harlem Mothers Association, Inc.; helped to organize the St. Nicholas Tenants Association; the Harlem Council; and the Greater Harlem Development Corporation, of which she served as Secretary. Malcolm X invited Mobley to be his guest at the June 28, 1964 rally which launched the OAAU (Organization of Afro-American Unity). Mobley proposed with overwhelming community support, an initiative effecting the naming and renaming of many streets, schools and public buildings in Harlem and throughout New York, in recognition of African American and Puerto Rican heroes and heroines with the support of the Board of Education and local politicians. In1965 Mobley founded the highly successful "In Pursuit of Excellence" an education project designed to recognize and to foster academic and other achievements by African American and Puerto Rican youth. The late Congressman Adam Powell, Jr. writing in 1966, described Ora Mobley as "a significant force in the community”. From 1974 through 1978 she was an instructor in Ethics Studies, specializing in African Culture. Mobley's wide-ranging work in the community eventually brought her to the attention of Harlem-based African American artist, Earl Sweeting, who she married in1970.

Her numerous awards and honors include the "World Service" award from the Harlem branch of the YMCA; the New York City Housing Authority's "Outstanding Tenant of the Year" Award; the "Mother of the Year Award." Ora Mobley Sweeting was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Liberal Arts from the Great China Arts College in Kowloon Hong Kong in 1973 and an honorary doctorate degree in African American History from the Universal Orthodox College of Nigeria, West Africa m 1981. She is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ and regularly attends Christ Citadel International Church. Ora Mobley Sweeting now resides in Los Angeles California along with her daughter Candida Mobley Phillips, grandchildren Tomora and Danielle and great granddaughter, Madison Southerland.

Autumn WilliamsPartnerships Manager, Ashoka's Youth Venture

Autumn Breon Williams is a changemaker in the fight for education reform and the

promotion of social entrepreneurship. A native of Los Angeles, Ms. Williams was always an avid mathematics and science student and attended the California Academy of Mathematics and Science for high school. She was a three year participant in the NAACP's Academic Cultural Technological and Scientific Olympics and a national medalist in Physics. Autumn went on to study Aeronautics and Astronautics with a minor in Physics at Stanford University. During her time at Stanford, Ms. Williams did radiation dose-mapping work for Northrop Grumman, developed bidirectional reflectance distribution function applications for cube satellites in Stanford's Space Development laboratory, and researched microorganisms' high atmospheric astrobiological survival at NASA's Moffet Field. While at Stanford, Autumn also had a growing passion for social justice and its implications in international education. Ms. Williams was president of Stanford's NAACP chapter and traveled to India to teach English and mathematics in a small village in Tamil Nadu.

As the only Black woman undergraduate in her department, Autumn became curious about the lack of diversity in STEM fields across the nation. Applying her experiences from teaching in India, spending a great deal of her childhood in South Los Angeles, and competing in a male-dominated field, Ms. Williams saw the universal effect of marginalization on equal access to quality education.

Autumn toiled with the idea of addressing a daunting intersection of inequities: the significantly low representation of minorities and women in STEM fields and the lack of rigorous after-school academic programming in urban neighborhoods. To address these issues, Autumn founded STEMgineers Shifting Gears. STEMgineers Shifting Gears began as an organization that offered a week-long after-school program in Watts in which Stanford science and engineering students taught project-based learning lessons for middle school students. Since the first week-long program, STEMgineers has grown to an organization offering tutoring, programming for middle school and high school students, and curriculum focused on Algebra coherence and readiness. Since its inception, STEMgineers has served hundreds of students and significantly improved their competence and confidence in mathematics and science.

As STEMgineers Shifting Gears grows, Autumn would like the organization to have more of an international focus and eventually provide exposure to STEM fields and access to quality STEM instruction in the Caribbean, South Africa, and India.

Ms Williams currently lives and works in Washington, D.C. as the U.S. Youth Venture Partnerships Manager for Ashoka. Ashoka is a global social entrepreneurship firm operating in the United States and eighty other countries. Autumn manages partnerships in the U.S. global office for Ashoka's Youth Venture, a group that focuses on supporting young people in their efforts to create community-benefitting initiatives. Autumn aspires to fulfill one of Nelson Mandela's most pungently pervasive ideas that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

In commemoration of Women's History Month, I'd like to pay homage to the most important woman in my life,

my mother , who passed away peacefully just two weeks ago, on Martha Mouzone CooperSaturday, March 15, at her home in Oakland, California. She departed after a long and fruitful life of 92 years. For me and my siblings, my mother's greatest gift to us was her daily example of the principles that are captured in the theme of the 2014 National Women's History Month: Character, Courage, and Commitment. Martha Mouzone Cooper was all that – and so much more.

My mother was both the foundation and the inspiration of my life, not only in my formative years, but even as I stand before you today at an event she would have loved to be part of.

In my adult life, I have the rare distinction of being able to honestly say that I've never had a cross word, argument or disagreement with my mother. No matter what, she seemed to always find the best in me, even at times when I couldn't clearly find my own direction. The degree to which I have succeeded in my own life, and my purpose of helping as many people as I can, is largely due to the principles and values that my mother bestowed upon me.

She was a beautiful, vibrant woman of God. She was a faithful and devoted member in good standing at First A.M.E. Church in Oakland, California for more than seventy years, having joined as a teenager in 1939. The stories about my mother's devotion to her Church Family, Pastor, and so many others, are numerous. One of my favorite memories, however, is Mama's practice of arriving at church every Sunday morning one hour before the first service started, to ensure her parking place right out front, and to secure her favorite spot that became known by church members as “Sister Cooper's seat.” She also served on the Usher Board, sang in the choir, donated to church fundraisers and was a faithful participant in church activities and committees.

My mother had that “get-up-and-go” spirit for as long as I can remember, energetic and enthusiastic about her home, her family, and her community. She was a loving and devoted wife to my father, Earl Cooper, until his passing in 1978. She was also a fantastic cook, well-known for her delicious desserts, especially her beautiful cakes, fantastic chocolate chip cookies, and her specialty, "Nut Bars."

After many years managing her household, she took employment with Kaiser Permanente, delivering twenty-years of service until her retirement in 1983. However, she always took the time to be active in my life and in the lives of my brothers and sisters: Eleanor Mae, Barbara Jean and Charles Bruce (who passed away in 1986). My mother was the glue of the strong bond our entire extended family has enjoyed throughout the years. We will all cherish the memory of more than 100 of us coming together just two years ago to pay tribute to her on her 90th birthday.

Well into her last years, my mother remained vigilant to living life to the absolute fullest, even driving herself to and from her Retiree's Bowling League, serving as a caregiver to the elderly and shut-in, and doting on her seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Martha Mouzone Cooper will be deeply missed by her family, loved-ones and all who had the privilege of knowing her. And now I know that I will always have an angel watching over me.
