Smaller than the arts centre it still put on a good show as the art works on show would attest.

Hello All, Well this is my final Newsletter report for the year! I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. I dare say it’s due to filling up so many of each of the days. I am very pleased and proud of what BBAA have achieved over the

year. Ficifolia Art Show and it’s fabulous supporters and sponsors ,Group exhibitions and collaborations, Partnerships with other organisations such as Baw Baw Shire, Creative Gippsland V/Line and VicTrack Warragul Camera Club, Trafalgar Community Bank/Bendigo Bank, Regional Arts Victoria, Craft Victoria and our sponsorship of a disadvantaged young person to attend a drama workshop over summer - Theatrecraft Youth Unlimited. We are plan-ning another NGV for Kids to run over summer holidays, I hope I haven’t left anyone out. We do value and depend upon our community partners. Having acknowledged organisations I need to say that as a voluntary group, we are totally dependant on the hard work and generous volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise to keep BBAA on track. To all of you, thank you for doing what you do so well. We would be nothing without you. We have created an IT sub committee to help us to remain on top of our Web-site and also of our backups and documentation in the digital world. We are so lucky to have volunteers who have this expertise to lead some of us less IT savvy in the right direction. Thanks Geoff Thomas, and Michael Ogden. Prue Barridge, Ingrid, Marlene, new volunteer Cheryl Cook and myself will be part of this team. The Committee of Management is also beginning to plan the program of events for Creative Gippsland’s ‘ Come and Play all of May’ Do you have an activity you would like to be included? The sooner we have them listed and ready, the more chance we will be included in the publicity and good attendance. Yes May is a long way ahead, but the best activities are planned well in advance. I hope you’ve put your entry into the “It’s a small world” exhibition coming up soon. I will be ‘on the wall’ for the first time in December and January. So stop by and have a look if you’re interested. Don’t forget to think ‘Local and Handmade’ for Christmas and come visit the Station Gallery or the Warragul Arts Market, perhaps you’ll see something you like for Christmas gifts, you will be supporting your local community and spread-ing the love around. I have had a full and busy year with some highs and the counterbalancing lows. I’m currently ‘recovering’ from an extremely busy weekend where I was an exhibitor with Bead Society Victoria selling my wares to other beaders. I also entered a few works to some of the exhibitions this year. I’m delighted to report that my single bead “Dragonfly summer” entered into the single bead competition with the theme ‘Summer Dreaming’ came first. It is a metal bead constructed with dapping, soldering and setting of millefiori flowers. A double delight was that I also sold that work. I also managed to sell the set of five beads that were entered into the set of beads competition ‘Australian Wild-flowers’ theme too. The pictures are a bit ordinary because I was too much of a hurry to submit the work. Ah well, I will try harder to take better ones next time. I hope you are all diligently working on pieces to submit for Ficifolia Art Show. Entry forms are available now. Have a wonderful Christmas with those you love and I look forward to seeing you in 2018. Keep Creating. Kay

Carol Monson ’ s Carol Monson ’ s Carol Monson ’ s Carol Monson ’ s –––– Bbaa Member Profile Bbaa Member Profile Bbaa Member Profile Bbaa Member Profile

Most artists have a passion for particular artists and periods of art that strongly influence their work. As Deb comments “Wearable Art is what I really find inspiring from Vivienne Westwood or John Paul Gaultier to the many fashion styles through history.” What she finds exciting is how the modern designers use elements from the past to create a contempo-rary style. She obviously finds costume history as inspiring especially early 20th century fashion. She has found the cos-tume collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the History of Costume collection at Kensington Palace amazing, however her favourite designer is Dior because of the combination of design and fabric. Artists vary in the way they respond to the question ‘What process do you work through to begin and complete a work of art?’ Deb is quite clear stating that “Generally, I have a theme to work toward and discuss my ideas with my hus-band, a bit of brain storming. I am not one for recording or diarizing my plans, so do work on the notion of allowing the work to evolve throughout the process. I then source a com-mercial pattern that will be suitable or can be altered. The

wool is spun, dyed and woven and I either embroider pieces before construction or construct the garment and then embroider. “ Over the years Deb has created many garments but willingly admits that of these her favourite piece is a white evening jacket embroidered with pink beading and stitching. “The piece was called Seeds and I embroi-dered dandelion flowers and seeds over the jacket. The piece was entered into the Bendigo Wool and Sheep Show and was placed third. The jacket was selected to be part of the fashion parade and this was a real thrill for me. I entered it into the Royal Canberra Show and won first prize as well as the Canberra Spinners and Weav-ers award. I entered it into the Royal Adelaide show and also won first prize.” Obviously these wins were artistic highlights but there have also been others: Two first places and second place at the Canberra show 2015, 2016, 2017

First and second places at the Adelaide show 2016, 2017 Four second places and three third places at the Bendigo Wool show with pieces chosen to be paraded at the annual fashion parade from 2013 to 2017, Highly commended at the Wangaratta Stitched Up exhibition 2015 Selling pieces at local art shows With such a productive textile career so far Deb is still pre-pared to indulge in some wishes, one to travel to New Zea-land to visit the Wearable Art Museum in Nelson and another to see her work becoming more sculptural and perhaps less functional.

Deb Wearne is a frequent contributor to Baw Baw

Arts Alliance exhibitions and the shops in both the Yarragon Station Gallery and the Trafalgar Artspace. Her wearable art is exquisitely produced and presented. Although she has always been interested in fibres and fab-rics as far back as high school it was teachers’ college that really gave her an insight into what was possible. Calling herself an artist is a concept she only arrived at late in her life because until recently she saw her self as being crafty not artistic. “The urge was always there, I just needed the time to indulge in my art and have a change in thinking.” Her training was as a Textiles and Food teacher at State College of Victoria, Rusden (Larnook) and over her teaching career she completed many workshops to enhance skills and learn new and dif-ferent techniques. As an artist Deb describes herself predominately as a spinner and weaver with a passion for natural fibres. She has always liked to embellish work be-cause hand em-broidery enables her to create a piece that is more a 3D artwork than just a garment. What she enjoys is the ability to combine all these aspects of textiles. As well as enjoying the practice of combining different meth-ods of finishing and embellishing a garment Deb also loves the process of spinning yarn right through to dyeing and weaving and finally producing a fabric which can then be used to create wearable art. This process she describes as “something like from the sheep’s back to my back”. Deb has been spinning since attending teacher's college back in the 1970s but admitted that “over my working life, I let my passion lapse through lack of time and energy. Once retired, I was able to re embrace my spinning wheel and “go for it” again. “ When asked to describe her style Deb responded that she sees it as “Funky, wearable art that is brightly coloured and highly textured...inviting the viewer to touch and feel. (she says) I recently visited the Dior Exhibition at the NGV and all I wanted to do was to touch and feel the items. They were so inviting. I want my pieces to evoke similar emotions in the people who view my pieces.”

STATION GALLERY NEWS from Sue Murphy-

Gallery Manager

The clay group had a very enjoyable 'opening'

for their Rhymes and Reasons exhibition which

included some poetry readings to the theme,

from the Eclectic Creators Unite. Everyone

greatly enjoyed the afternoon. Their exhibition runs until Sunday

December 3, another of our not to be missed exhibitions. On The

Wall we have a very interesting exhibition from Elisabeth

Smoorenburg also not to be missed.

In December/January we are organising 'IT'S A SMALL WORLD' an

exhibition of small works, nothing larger than A4 including the

frame, 2D or 3D. Miniatures, postcards, small works and

stamps .See what inspiration you can come up with for a small

format in any medium. Entry forms are now available in the gal-

leries and on the website . It will be an open exhibition for Bbaa

members and non-members. We have set the entry fee at a rea-

sonable level, up to 4 entries $10 and $20 for up to 8 entries for

members ,so that you are able to put in multiple entries if you

wish. On The Wall at the same time we will have some of the fan-

tastic work from our President Kay Lancashire. Kay is well known

for her interesting pieces of jewellery.

Don't forget entries are now due. Work delivered on Sunday 3rd

December. The exhibition runs from 6th December until 28th

January

Do drop in to Our Gallery Shop at Yarragon to do your gift shop-

ping . Anita has organised an interesting variety of work and she is

always refreshing the shop with work from new artists. If you

have work you would like to sell in the Shop please contact Anita.

You need to be a Bbaa member though and new members are

always welcome.

On 9th, 10th and 11th January 2018 we will be running another of

the National Gallery of Victoria Kids Activities. We will let you

know as details come to hand hopefully elsewhere in this newslet-

ter This was an excellent , well resourced program and greatly

enjoyed by those who participated. This time there will also be a

program for teenagers. You will need to book with Prue and Jessie

as we had a full house last time.

Trafalgar Station has a pop-up shop which is open Tuesday-Friday

every week [usually] and on the first Saturday of the month so do

drop in. You will be surprised at the excellent range of work we

have for sale. If not open someone in the next door art space will

let you in.

Information about our drop-in groups over the December/January

period will be detailed in a separate section of the newsletter.

There may be some disruption to parking at Trafalgar station at

some stage between mid December and mid March as they up-

grade the bus bay and car park and put in another access point to

the platform. I am awaiting exact details on timelines and work

schedules and will try to keep everyone up to date once we know.

Exhibitions for 2018 have all been booked. I am taking bookings

now for 2019.

The Wall has vacancies from April 2018 onwards. This exhibition

space is only for members at a cost of $20 for a

month or for free if you give an artist's talk. It is a

popular space because you get a nice long straight

Wall space.

As this is the last newsletter for the year I would like

to give a large vote of thanks to my tireless Gallery

Committee- Ross Jacka, Barb Gogerly, Marlene

Ogden, Ingrid Thomas, Alene Bonser, Prue Barridge,

Anita George and Liz Bowley. With their help and

support we are able to run the two galleries and art

spaces. Also a big thank you to Barb Gogerly our

newsletter editor for her generosity and indulgence

when I am down to the wire

with my articles.

Have a very enjoyable Christ-

mas and festive season with

family and friends. A safe,

happy and healthy 2018

Enjoy summer

Best wishes

MMaD A5 August Challenge

“Challenge”: ~ a demanding or difficult task.

THE CHALLENGE!

♦ create a drawing a day for 28 days in mixed media. The defini-

tion of drawing was broad. The term mixed media referred to a

work of art that embodies more than one medium.

♦ the drawings must be no bigger than A5 and collected in a

book/journal.

♦ unsuccessful drawings must also be collected and not dis-

carded.

♦ two or more different media are to be used in each piece.

♦ visual or written prompts would be provided.

♦ suggested prompts, media/methods and layout were given in

a mix and match format.

As these criteria were being outline we MMaDsters were becoming

quite enthusiastic to take up the challenge.

Why were the MMaDsters so keen?

♦ hoping to become motivated to get back to doing some art

every day.

♦ not using time well at home.

♦ nothing but rubbish on TV.

♦ getting stale with current online challenge.

♦ push out of comfort zone.

♦ increase confidence with media previously shied away from.

♦ presentation of something new particularly techniques, ab-

stract art work and interpretation of ideas.

♦ improvise with materials.

♦ experiment with techniques.

♦ permission to play.

Expectations were running high.

How did the challenge come about?

Alison's love of designing curriculum coupled with a desire for a

self challenge of mixed media for 28 days led to the development

of this challenge.

Other art challenges on line can tend to be a bit boring through

being structured and prescriptive.

Our prompts were especially chosen for their double meanings

e.g. "citrus, germinate, something in the bathroom, blue".

Alison listed a mixed

media artist and an own

choice for each week.

How did the MMaDsters get on?

After the first week it was obvious that we needed more time. Our

presented pieces were meant to be "sketches" and experiments,

however we all found it difficult to present an unfinished or un-

successful piece (in our eyes) and could not resist the desire to

present a finished work of art. We needed more thinking time.

Plus we were having a great deal of trouble with the concept of

"success or not, present it and move on".

It was unanimously agreed that it would be a great idea to extend

the challenge for another 28 days.

We all heaved a sigh of relief and set about the next week's topics

with renewed enthusiasm.

For some MMaDsters a lot of the challenge lay in the using of 2

or more media in the same work of art. One who had tried differ-

ent media in the past and didn't like them said it was because the

results hadn't turned out well due to inexperience with the media.

This challenge gave them the permission to play and develop

their confidence.

Everyone agreed that it was great to bounce ideas with others,

discuss double meanings of prompts and converse about art

work. We could learn techniques from others and the steps in

their processes.

Is there life after the challenge?

♦ maybe the challenge will never finish as we can always revisit

the prompts and they will spark new ideas.

♦ the artist of the week could be revisited as skills develop.

♦ there was a need to get back to own work but the challenge

now gave MMaDsters a some other avenues to try when they

got stuck.

♦ the A5 journal was a great resource of ideas for the future.

♦ more confidence to improvise with materials.

♦ think more creatively with media and paper

- "I'll try that and see what happens".

♦ inspired to do more research.

♦ inspired to do more self analysis.

Thanks Alison. It has been a wonderful journey

over the last two months.

Hello Everyone, Wow hey how did we get this far into the year! I have attached the registration form for next years ‘Come and Play’ – and there is some information attached as well that could be useful. We will have a brand new Creative Gippsland website by the end of the year and registration of events will be able to be done online. This is just to remind people to go online and check out the new website and register their events early for May please!

I will also be providing free social media training for people putting on events (through MacandErnie) specifically so people can better promote their event. We (Creative Gippsland) will also have someone on board for March – May to coordinate a social media campaign to get people to the Creative Gippsland website. All working together we should expand our reach! Enjoy your break! Regards Karen Karen Whitaker-Taylor

OLD DROUIN BUTTER FACTORY.

On Sunday November 12th the doors of the Old Drouin Butter

Factory were flung open for the public to view the recently reno-

might serve the community, which is currently without any pub-

come together to jointly promote our fabulous arts and cultural com-

munity with activities and events. Creative Gippsland welcomes you to May! Come and Play is our annual Gippsland wide, month of May-filled celebration of the region's creativity. If you are planning to hold your event in a public space, you may need an events permit. Please contact your Council’s Events Team. If you do not have public liability insurance, you could perhaps partner with a community group. You could also partner with a winery, restaurant, accommodation business, or other arts event to put together a special deal to encourage our visitors to stay longer and enjoy Gippsland! You need to think carefully how you will also promote your individual event – the more pro-motion the better! Creative Gippsland will be promoting Come and Play more generally di-recting people to their website and social media. Completion of this form does not guarantee inclusion in the program. If you need more information about the Celebration please send us a message [email protected] or call your local Council Creative Gippsland representative [email protected] Please speak with us about any assistance you may need to bring your ideas to fruition! Themes are ….

Sept—Spring

Oct— Australiana

Nov—Personal Expression

Dec—Summer

I know it is getting earlier every year!

Can’t be helped this year as unfortunately I

have to retire as editor as of this issue to

concentrate on myself.

I hope you have enjoyed the 5 years of

monthly newsletters and I hope they will be

continuing in 2018.

I wish you all a very safe and happy Festive

Season and New Year.

May 2018 bring health wealth (in whatever

form you need) and especially happiness to you

and your loved ones.

This is “one good eye” signing off.
