Dear Dr. Sterns

I just received your letter of November 14-th. The Foundation is willing to participate in your expenses up to an am ount of $1000.- We however, hope to unload part of this grant onto our Swiss friends in askirg them to make arrangements for your stay in Switzerl and in such a way that all expenses are being paid by them. We therefore, prop ose to make an initial payment to you of $600.- before you leave this coun try and after we receive the account from our Swiss friends, the difference which may be required.

Before we can go into more details at this time we have to again check with our Swiss friends about possibilities of lectures during January. As soon as we receive their answer, we will let you know about our final decisions.

In order that we can stay in contact with you, will you please let us know when you intend to depart from Berkeley , how long you will be staying in New York and when and where we could get in touch with you on your trip. It will be possible for you, we hope, to give us this information immediately. There exists, of course, also the poss ibility that we could arrange for a short meeting in New York.

Dear Dr. Furter:

Thank you for your letter of October 29,and your of fer

to sponsor a lecture trip to Switzerland. Unfortuna tely I am unable

to accep t . There are evidently several misunderstandings in this

matter :

In July Dr. Dpent asked me whether I would be interes ted in a

lecture tour to Switzerland. There might be a possi bility that the

AMERICAN SWISS FOUNDATION would invite me. In this case the Foundation

would pay my expenses for the trip to Europe. I answ ered that I

would be interested under these conditions. I also told him that

I would like to leave for Europe in the second half of October.

Before leaving for Europe, Dr. ^rent wrote me at the e nd of July

That I would probably hear from you.

As I did not hear from you for two months I wrote to - ^r.Brent

in New Yo t k about a month ago asking him to drop the whole matte r.

At the same time I informed him that I had a boat re servation from

You can imagine that under these circumstances 1 was somewhat

astonished when I received your letter. Besides the discrepancy in

the financial proposition, it is hard for me to unders tand how

arrangements for my lectures in Switzerland could be made for November

without any knowledge on my part, on the contrary aft er I hec

written to Dr. Dj»en t about a month ago tnat I would leave for

Europe at the end of November.

Dear Dr. Stern:

I received your letter of November 3rd and am very sorry that you are unable to accept the invitation for a trip to S witzerland. I wish how�ever, to clear up some of the various misunderstand ings.

As I already pointed out in my letter of October 29 th, arrangements for such a trip to Switzerland could not be made be fore October, when our contact parties in that country returned from their vacation. Therexore, it was of no avail to contact you before that date sin ce we on our side had to

see to it that lectures, etc. could be arranged for .

Apparently, Dr. Brent was not quite sure when you w ould depart for Europe because only two weeks ago he told me that y ou already might have left this country. However, this was in the preliminary stage of our correspondence of little importance because Dr. Reichstein in Swit zerland knows quite well that the proposal for lectures in November was a te ntative one and^could as well be December or even January. I merely pointed out the possibility of

such a. trip.

I wish to call your attention also to the fact that the American &Yiiss Foundation for Scientific Exchenge has only limited funds of which we cannot freely dispose. Therefore, we try to arrange visits in such a way that support for expenses is granted in each case only after car eful study, ^ince you were invited by the Nobel Prize Committee for your journ ey to Stockholm, we therefore assumed that part of the expenses would be taken ca re of by this party and our Foundation would support you as much as possible fo r the rest of the trip hoping to get from you some information of the expenses to be involved.

I wish also to make clear that the Swiss American F oundation for Scientific Exchange was founded by interested parti es of both countries in order to support exchange of scientists and scientific in fomation. y*e, however, restrain whenever possible from direct invitations but merel y follow up suggestions of scientific circles in both countries trying to rend er our help financially if this seems to be warranted and also with regard to arran gements for ticket reservations and lecturing programs. We, however, can not and do not wish to take any responsibility" as far as individuals to be invited are concerned and have to rely

in this respect on advice , which we try to get fro m the already above mentioned scientific circles.

If you should reconsider your decision and,I person ally think that it would be for your advantage,to visit Switzerland , where you have spent some time previously, please contact us and we will gladly take up the

matter again.

Dear Professor Stern:

On July 31, 1946 Dr. Brent approached me with the s uggestion to put you on the program for a lecture trip to Swi tzerland sponsored by the American Swiss Foundation for Scientific Exc hange. Unfortunately, I wras unable to investigate this matter any sooner partly on account of my ovai vacation and partly on account of the vacat ions at the Swiss universities and the Federal Institute of Technolog y, which, as you know, last up to early October. Most of the professors,wi th whom we are in contact in regard to the exchange visits, were not available.

Just today I received an answer from professor Reic hstein, Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Basle, who acts as our contact man in Switzerland. He has investigated with the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, especially Profe ssor Scherrer and with the various scientific and chemical societies and has cabled today: "Stern welcome in Zurich and Basle November". I am still expecting from him confirmation of this cable as wrell as some det ails with regard to your visit.

I wanted, however, to let you know immediately abou t the possibility of your visiting Switzerland in connect ion with your trip to Europe, which as I understand is scheduled to take place in November.Will you let me know by airmail when you intend to depart for Stockholm also how much time you could reserve for a trip to Switzerland and your plans with regard to the time of your return to the ^nited States. For instance I would like to know whether you are trave ling by plane or boat, also if you have already reservations for your trip to Stockholm and back, so that we may make arrangements for the trip Stock holm to Basle and from there to any point on the continent where you could use your present return reservations. It would also be of interest to know in what other way we might be able to support you. We, of course, have i n mind to participate in your traveling expenses, especially for the trip fr om Stockholm to ^Switzerland and return, for your stay in Switzerland, etd. As s oon as 1 have your reply,I will immmediately arrange for the necessary reser vations and will inform Reichstein in order to enable him to make advance d ates for your lectures and possible other ■ visitsto laboratories, universities , etc.

Dear Dr. Furter:

I received your letter of November 8, and learnt from it that you were under the impression that the Nobel Foundation would pay for trip to Europe. That is not the case.

In case of my lecture tour to Switzerland, this trip would serve a double purpose. Therefore,I consider it fair if your Foundation would pay- half of ray exoenses for the round trip to Europe, and the expenses of tne lecture tour. That would mean :

Round trip Berkeley- Southampton : #(round trip Berkeley-New York: $ h NewYork - Southampton: 1 'f/-jV-Southamton - New York: $-tne Cimara ^ine raised the fare in the meantime. )

Half of it: $Transportation Stoekhoira-Switzerland -Southampton and 2 weeks stay in Swit�

zerland: $ 300-jfOOThe latter is only an estimate, you are probably in a position to make a more accurate estimate. Consequently the total contribution of your Foun�dation would in this case amount to approximately& 900- $ 1 000.-

Uuder these conditions 1 would be very glad to make the lecture tour in January.
