†Gives us the identity of a Christian - it is a distinctly Catholic sign

†Gives witness to both those who make it and those who see it that faith in Jesus Christ is a force in the world.

† Sanctifies our lives in consecration to the Three Persons of the Blessed Trinity

† Shows that the faith of all Christians rests on the Trinity.

† At the beginning and end of prayers

† In administering the sacraments

† When entering and leaving (optional) the church (by dipping our fingers in holy water)

† When receiving a blessing

WHY do we make the sign of the cross?

† To remind us of the Blessed Trinity - The Father, Son and Holy Spirit

†Reminds us of our baptism

†Reminds us that the Son of God died on the cross for all men.

†Blessing ourselves to bring us into the presence of the Lord

THE “AMEN”

† Derived from a Hebrew word which means “believe”

†When we respond with “AMEN”, we are saying “Yes, I believe” or “So be it”

†Belief in someone indicates that the person is solid, trustworthy and faithful. “AMEN” - “express both God’s faithfulness towards us and our trust in him” (CCC 1062)

THE “AMEN” (cont’d)† The most original use of “AMEN” was by Jesus himself as He repeatedly opened a teaching with the phrase “Amen, I say to you…”

†When we receive the Eucharist, we also say “Amen”- “yes, it is true..” (CCC 1396)

† The Church concludes all its prayers with “Amen”, an affirmation - a Yes, a “so be it!” to what we have just prayed and a sign of participation by those assembled.

THE “AMEN” (cont’d)†The Great Amen concludes the most solemn part of the Mass (“Through Him, with Him and in Him….)

†In praying “Amen”, we entrust ourselves “completely to Him who is the “Amen of infinite love and perfect faithfulness.”

The Lord’s Prayer (Our Father)

† Called the Lord’s Prayer because it comes to us from our Lord Jesus, the master and model of our prayer.

† Truly a summary of the whole gospel

† The most perfect of prayers.

In it we ask not only for all the things we can rightly desire, but also in the sequence that they should be desired.

† Recorded in the gospels of Matthew & Luke

THE ANGELUS The Angelus was a Catholic devotion time. When the church bell rang, people stopped their work and recited a prayer. This happened three times a day; morning, noon, and evening. In the famous painting by French painter Jean Millet “THE ANGELUS” we see the man and his wife stopping for devotion after hearing the bell from the church in the distance.

THE ANGELUS

† The Angelus is a short devotion in honor of the Incarnation of our Blessed Lord, and it is recited three times a day. It is distinctively Catholic.

†It commemorates the angel Gabriel’s announcement (the Annunication Lk 1:26-38)- to the Virgin Mary of the Incarnation

†The tolling of church bells at fixed hours marks the time in which the Angelus is prayed: at 6am, 12 noon and 6pm.
