This is an outstanding school. The key factor in the school’s success is the continuous drive to move the school forward by senior staff and members of the governing body who set very high expectations. This, in turn, is shared by staff who are united in ensuring that all children get off to an excellent start in their learning and do as well as they can throughout the school within an exciting and inclusive learning environment.

At Barrow Primary School, every child’s educational and personal development is important to us. As we know from personal experience, all children are individuals. They grow both physically and emotionally at different rates. As a small village school, we are able to take and individual approach to each child’s education.

We also pride ourselves on having a relaxed caring ‘family’ atmosphere in the School with the learners showing caring behaviour not only to their classmates but also to older and younger members of the school.

Pre-School

There are two pre-school establishments in the village and the school has close connections with both of them. The Head teacher and Reception Class teacher visit on a regular basis. Pupils from both of them also come to our special events, such as the Christmas production. Plum Tree Pre-School are situated on the school site enabling close liaison and a smooth transition. Their services also include a Breakfast Club from 8.00am – 8.50am (£4), an After School Club 3.20 - 4.30pm (£4) or After School Club 3.20 - 6pm (£9). A one-off payment of £5 is required as a registration fee for all children attending extended services.

Starting School

All children who are four years old by 31 August 2019 will be offered a full time place in a school reception class starting from September that year. This is in accordance with the Suffolk County Council’s Admissions Policy.

All places for the Early Years/Reception Class have to be applied for. The School will send out admission forms and the school brochure by the end of November upon request. Admission forms have to be returned by January for admission the following September.

The contact tel. no. for the County Admissions Team is 0845 600 0981.

Open Evening

When parents are offered a place for their child, they are invited to attend an informal Open Evening in the Summer Term before their child starts school. Here, they can meet the Headteacher, class teacher and other school staff, find out more about school routines, discuss any issues or concerns that they may have about their child starting school and have the opportunity to look around our school facilities and extensive grounds.

The Early Years Class team arranges visits for the children in the Summer term before they start school. These visits help the child become familiar with their new surroundings through socialisation and play. They will have the opportunity to meet children from other playgroups and nurseries, who will be starting school at the same time. Staff also arrange home visits by mutual agreement, in order to get to know each family on a more individual level, and offer tailored information and support.

We provide parents with a ‘Welcome’ pack which contains useful information for both parent and child.

We aim to provide a smooth, enjoyable transition to starting school for both parents/carers and the children.

Travel

In the interests of safety, if you travel to and from school by car, we would be grateful if you would use the village hall car park near to the school.

We like to encourage pupils to walk or cycle to school where possible.

Absence

If your child is ill please notify the school by telephoning if at all possible, and on each consecutive day. We operate a ‘first day calling’ system, i.e. if we have not been notified of a reason for absence by 9.30am we will telephone the child’s parents to find out the reason why the child is not in school.

Non urgent appointments such as dental inspections and routine medical examinations should be arranged to take place after school hours.

Travel and AbsenceBarrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Barrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

We would always encourage you to try to avoid taking your child out of school as any absence is disruptive to their learning. Holiday absences during term time are not authorised unless in exceptional circumstances.

At Barrow Primary School, we believe in a personalised approach to teaching and learning. We believe in giving our children the opportunity to develop their full potential as confident, resilient, reciprocal, resourceful and reflective learners. We aspire to create optimum conditions for all children to be able to fulfil their full potential. We encourage children to be effective learners; to take responsibility for their own learning, to be involved as far as possible in reviewing the way they learn, and to reflect on how they learn – what helps them learn and what makes it difficult for them to learn.

Curriculum

We are committed to delivering a broad and balanced curriculum that not only ensures that all children are literate and numerate, achieving high standards in basic skills, but that also embeds these into a cross-curricular approach, where transferable skills are used in relevant and meaningful ways. To achieve this, some parts of the curriculum are taught explicitly and discretely to be used later through short or longer term topic work structured in a variety of ways.

LearningBarrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Barrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Our curriculum is designed and prepared by staff, and based upon the requirements of the National Curriculum. It is a skills based curriculum where subjects can either be grouped together and linked to an inspiration (e.g. Heroes or What is in space?) or subjects can be taught individually.

At Barrow, we adopt a range of approaches that allow children to benefit from a rich and varied learning environment. This allows children to use and develop their skills and abilities to enable them to reach their full potential.

Page 10: Barrow CEVC Contents Primary Schoolbarrowcevcprimaryschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/... · Barrow CEVC Primary School Inspire, Creat e, Discover, Together Barrow CEVC Primary School

11

A wide range of resources are used to stimulate the children and develop their confidence, in all aspects of language and literacy work including books, film and the computer. We not only want the children to be effective readers but also to embark upon a lifelong love of literature. This is a crucial area of the curriculum where the home-school partnership can considerably enhance a child’s progress.

Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy

We encourage children to enjoy and develop a positive attitude towards all areas of mathematics including numeracy, measurement, shape, space, algebra, probability and data handling.

Barrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Barrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Children have daily sessions using mental calculations and will be involved in problem solving and investigations. A wide range of practical resources are used to support learning in mathematics.

Language and Communication

We believe effective reading, writing and speaking/listening skills are essential in providing a firm foundation for learning across the whole curriculum. Purposeful talking and careful listening are encouraged, at all stages, in all areas of the curriculum.

12

Information and Communication Technology

Computers and other forms of information and communication technology are an everyday fact in today’s world. So, it is vital that the children are aware of their influence and develop increasing confidence in their use.

We have interactive whiteboards throughout the school. Children also use laptop computers, digital and video cameras, and audio equipment to support their learning in many areas of the curriculum. They experience word processing, data handling, graphics and modelling. We are constantly upgrading our ICT facilities to enable ICT to be used, as fully as possible, across the curriculum.

We have a set of ipads and laptops that are used in school and we benefit from borrowing further sets from our middle school partners.

Science

Right from the start, the children are encouraged to develop a systematic, enquiry based approach through asking questions and using focused exploration and investigation. Children explore both physical and environmental science. They are encouraged to observe, classify, measure, test and investigate all aspects of science. They will also be expected to make comparisons and draw conclusions. We equip our pupils with the basic knowledge, skills and understanding they will need to enable them to cope with a life increasingly influenced by science.

13

Modern Foreign Languages

French is taught in Key Stage 2 and involves understanding, speaking, reading and writing the language. We help children to become aware of other languages in appropriate aspects of the curriculum.

Spanish club is held on Monday lunchtimes for those who wish to learn another language.

Personal Social and Health Education

In order for children to develop as confident, responsible citizens; a wide range of elements are covered through the programme called the PSHE curriculum. This includes developing self-esteem, knowledge about friendships, tolerance, and personal goal-setting. Healthy living is promoted, as is the importance of positive relationships and respect for others, within the family and also the wider community.

Each half term we plan a special focus day to introduce or develop the planned theme.

Barrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Physical Education

We concentrate on developing a positive attitude in this extremely important area of the curriculum. The activities experienced by the children are gymnastics, games skills, dance, athletics, orienteering and swimming.

During lunch times, the children are encouraged to use hula hoops, skipping ropes and balls, provided by the School. There is a high quality adventure play area, which is used both in lessons and break times. We are fortunate to have an excellent playing field and heated covered swimming pool.

Page 13: Barrow CEVC Contents Primary Schoolbarrowcevcprimaryschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/... · Barrow CEVC Primary School Inspire, Creat e, Discover, Together Barrow CEVC Primary School

14

Music

The children are encouraged to enjoy a variety of types of music, through performance and composition, listening to and appraising music. All children take part in singing activities on a daily basis and are given the opportunity to play instruments including the recorder and a range of percussion.

Art

This subject has a high status within the School. The children are given many opportunities to express themselves in this area. We have high expectations of the children and their work is frequently of a very high calibre. The children follow a well planned programme that includes drawing, painting, textiles, print making, 3 dimensional work and collage.

History and Geography

Children are encouraged to be the next generation of Historians and Geographers through a variety of exciting and inspiring Geography and History topics. Children are given opportunities to widen their knowledge and understanding of the world around them, whilst developing key skills such as field work, using maps and atlases, asking questions to find out about the past and investigating historical artefacts. We place great importance in learning outside of the classroom and participate in many History and Geography based trips, as well as have visitors to school and theme based days.

Design and Technology

In a world where technology is increasing rapidly, it is important that children are aware how design and technology can affect and influence their lives. They also need to develop the capability to solve problems in this field of study. This is essentially a practical subject where children learn to use simple tools and to understand properties of materials so that they can chose the most appropriate one for a particular task. The children will be helped to develop an increasingly independent approach to working.

15

Assembly and Collective Worship

Daily acts of child-centred collective worship are held, these are Christian but of a non- denominational character. They are led by the Headteacher, a member of the teaching staff, the vicar or by a visitor to School.

We believe it is important to educate children within an environment with clear and explicit values. We have adopted a programme based upon strong Christian values. These are becoming increasingly incorporated in all aspects of school life. Parents may, if they wish, withdraw their children from the arrangements for Collective Worship and Religious Education; any such request should be made in writing to the Headteacher.

Sex and Relationships Education

The Governing Body of this school has decided that certain aspects will be taught through the Science and Person-al, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Curriculum. As such, it will be part of a planned and continuous curriculum.

Teachers take particular care and are sensitive to match their teaching to the age and maturity of the children involved. At all stages, we answer children’s questions honestly and appropriately.

We would not expect to provide details of human sexual behaviour and would always refer such questions to parents.

Beliefs and Values (R.E.)

Religious Education is taught using an agreed syllabus approved by the Local Authority and the latest thematic ‘Emmanuel’ units which follow an enquiry cycle approach. We encourage the children to develop their own spiritual and moral values, and to respect those of other religions.

The children visit the village church a number of times throughout the year and members of the church visit the school frequently and provide support to the school curriculum. Trips and visitors related to other faiths are also planned for regularly.

16

Educational Trips

From time to time opportunities are given for pupils to go with staff on local educational visits. All contributions to help cover the costs of these outings are on a voluntary basis but should insufficient contributions be received, it may be necessary to cancel a visit. Parents will be notified of these visits well in advance. Recently there has been the opportunity to offer a short residential visit to an outdoors centre to the older children (KS2).

Able and Talented

‘Gifted and talented’ describes children and young people with an ability to develop to a level significantly ahead of their year group, in one or more academic subject or in a practical skill like sport, art, music.

Skills like leadership, decision-making and organisation are also taken into account when identifying and providing for gifted and talented children.

Children may move on and off their school’s Gifted and Talented register over time as they develop at different rates to their peers.

If you think your child is gifted or talented, you should first discuss their abilities and needs with your child’s teacher or headteacher.

Special Educational Needs

The identification of children with special educational needs is a continuing process in schools. Following early identification and assessment within the school, and taking advice, where necessary, the Local Authority (LA) assesses those Suffolk pupils who may require special educational provision. The LA provision may be made in a number of ways; by funding additional resources to enable a pupil to cope in a mainstream school, attendance at special classes or units/schools.

Helping children with Special Educational Needs is very much a joint effort between parents, children, teachers, and the Local Authority;

During the reception year a Foundation Stage Profile is completed giving an assessment of the children’s abilities and needs. This profile is discussed with parents throughout the year and helps inform the Year 1 teacher in planning the curriculum for the following year. Key stage 1 Statutory Standard Assessments take place in Year 2 for all children.

Healthy School

This scheme is about creating happier, healthier children who do better in learning and in life!

Since 2007, we have been recognised as a ‘Healthy School’. The core themes are PSHE, healthy eating, physical activity and emotional wellbeing. Our re-assessment award in 2011 states ‘Barrow School is committed to healthier living and learning.’

School Clubs and Extra Curricular Activities

We believe that school is not the only place where children can learn and that teachers are not the only people who can help children’s learning to develop. Therefore, we offer an extensive range of clubs; before school, at lunch times and after school, that we encourage the children to take part in.

Last year, the following clubs were held:

Home and School Working Together

We encourage strong links between home and School. Parents / carers are made to feel welcome in School and a large number support the School. Volunteer help with activities such as listening to children read, helping with art, swimming and computer activities is greatly appre-ciated. An enhanced disclosure from the DBS is obtained for all regular visitors.

Newsletters are written at regular intervals to keep parents / carers informed about the whole life of the School. In addition information is shared with parents/carers through our parent email and text systems. Our School website is another valuable means of communication between home and School. This is updated on a regular basis. Parents / carers are invited to Parents Evenings, Open Afternoons/Evenings, Curriculum Evenings, church services, class assemblies and special events such as the Christmas Production.

Working TogetherBarrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

Barrow CEVC Primary SchoolInspire, Create, Discover, Together

The teachers at the School are very approachable and genuinely share an interest in your child. They are always prepared to listen to any concerns which you may have. If there is a problem, in the first instance please speak to the class teacher. If it isn’t resolved, you should contact the Headteacher, who will try to achieve a satisfactory outcome, informally. If the problem remains unresolved after this, the Governors have set out procedures to deal with this.

A selection of school policies is available on the website. Other policies are available on request from the office.

Home Learning

Children are encouraged to read at home each evening; parental/carer support and encouragement is vital. Each year group teacher provides an appropriate level of home learning activities for pupils. The Yr 1-4 children bring home spellings, mathematics reinforcement exercises and may need to research a new topic.

Whole School tasks will be set that will provide an Inspiring task for ‘Family Learning’.

Friends of Barrow School (FOBS)

We have an enthusiastic group, who meet regularly to discuss ways in which they can support the School. Fundraising events are organised, which are both enjoyable and profitable. Recently FOBS paid for the children to visit the pantomime, purchased new resources including laptop computers and fund the running costs for the swimming pool. We encourage all families to take part in a range of social activities. New ideas are welcomed and these can be shared with FOBS members or the headteacher.

Our FOBS have raised funds for the swimming pool, reading books, play equipment and to support activities that enrich the curriculum.

Behaviour

We expect our children to develop respect for themselves and others. Each child is encouraged to develop a caring, responsible attitude, which reflects an understanding of the needs of others. We expect them to develop self- control and be responsible for their actions and understand the effect their actions have on others.

A leaflet explaining our Behaviour Policy is available on the website and from the School.

Teaching School Alliance

Barrow school is the lead school for the ConnectED Teaching School Alliance.

• It is a national recognition of the excellent teaching, high standards of achievement of pupils, the commitment of staff and outstanding leadership at all levels.

• Finances have been awarded to our school as we build our capacity to offer support to other schools, develop our training for new and experienced teachers and become a centre for research.

• This will ensure that our school continues to meet the ‘Outstanding’ expectations.

Community Links

The School uses Barrow village to support geographical and historical learning. Members of the community are invited regularly into the School to talk to the children about their roles. There are strong links with a local fruit farm, which the children visit throughout the year.

The children use the local area and businesses to support their learning in science. The community are invited into School to enrich our History topics and to demonstrate the link between the past and present.

Other members of the community have visited school to share their jobs and hobbies.

The ‘British Values’ which we particularly focus on in school are:

• Tolerance• Democracy• The Rule of Law• Mutual respect• Individual Liberty

With our SMSC, Beliefs and Values, Christian Ethos and British Values aspects all active in the curriculum, children are given lots of time beyond the purely academic aspects to explore what it means to be a person in today’s world and gain a confident sense of self.

Church

We are a Church of England Voluntary Controlled School. This has important implications for the general ethos of our School. The children use the church to enhance other areas of the curriculum, such as Geography, History, Art and, of course, RE.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education (SMSC)

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of learning are highly val-ued at Barrow. We ensure that this is a consistent aspect of children’s learning through the use of a weekly bulletin of activities linked to the values program. This provides each class with a rich and developed understanding of how the value relates to them as an individual and to wider society.

Partnerships

We enjoy strong links with the other schools in the Bury St Edmunds area and the Headteacher works closely with the other Heads on liaison and management issues. Subject Co-ordinators also work together and pastoral care and pre-transfer work is undertaken by staff involved with Year 4 pupils liaising with staff of the Middle Schools.

The children in the Barrow catchment area usually move onto Westley Middle School or Horringer Court Middle School. Information and relevant forms are sent to parents of year 4 children in November of each year and appli-cations have to be returned by a given date in January. Members of staff meet regularly with colleagues from the Middle School and careful liaison ensures a smooth transition. Activities and visits are arranged prior to transfer to help children become familiar with their new school.
