Baroid Surface Solutions™ Baroid Monitors Environmental Performance and Assists Operators in Reaching Environmental Compliance

Many regions and countries have adopted strictregulations regarding the discharge of drilling fluids andcuttings especially when drilling offshore. In 2002, the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced newguidelines for the use of synthetic-based drilling fluids (SBF)in the Gulf of Mexico. In response to these changes, BaroidSurface Solutions personnel have been specifically trained to manage fluid and waste volumes and assist operators inremaining in compliance with the synthetic-based fluiddischarge permit. The training, principles and reportsapplied in the Gulf of Mexico can be modified to fitregulations in force in any region. The Baroid productservice line first introduced this type of service in the North Sea in the 1990s.

Minimizing the volume of fluid lost to the environmentwith cuttings can reduce the impact of drilling operationsand also help reduce drilling fluid costs, especially whereexpensive SBFs are used.

Personnel

Baroid Surface Solutions Specialistsand Supervisors are currently trainedin the EPA discharge regulations forthe Gulf of Mexico. They can provideenvironmental compliance testingand documentation for both thewater-based fluid discharge permitand the synthetic-based drilling fluiddischarge permit for EPA Region 6.Personnel can also provide riginspections for compliance, screenperformance tracking, down timeequipment tracking, solids controlequipment evaluation, drill cuttingsretorting, volume accounting, qualitative oil content determinationReverse Phase Extraction (RPE) tests, daily visual sheen record, weeklystatic sheen test and other analysesrelevant to regulatory compliance.

The Reverse Phase Extraction (RPE) test to evaluate crude oil content is one of several tests required tohelp ensure continuous environmental compliance.

As part of the daily routine, the Baroid Surface SolutionsSpecialist coordinates with drilling rig crews to helpminimize the loss of fluid over the shale shakers when usingfine screens and/or pumping high rheology fluids. The crewsare continuously educated concerning the tangible andintangible benefits of fluid management. Shaker inclination, flow distribution, screen cleaning and maintenancerecommendations are also part of the Baroid SurfaceSolutions Specialist’s daily job site responsibilities.

Compliance Documentation

Baroid Surface Solutions Specialists and Supervisors keep a well-organized file at the rig site with the product and personnel certifications, lab results and equipmentcalibrations required as per the current EPA environmentalregulations in the Gulf of Mexico for SBFs. An end-of-wellreport is presented to the operator with documentationrequired to demonstrate compliance with the synthetic fluiddischarge regulation.

A major condition of the SBF discharge permit isthe ability to achieve and maintain the allowableoil on cuttings (OOC) value. The “Retention onCuttings” graph pictured here demonstrates howthe well’s average OOC is tracked.

The graph plots every OOC retort performed perday and calculates the well average, taking intoaccount displacement interfaces, zero dischargeintervals and pit clean outs.

Waste Minimization Campaign

Prior to a project or well starting, rig audits canbe performed and modifications to equipment or systems can be recommended to help ensurethat waste is minimized and to assist the operatorin achieving compliance.

Baroid personnel can make recommendations tohelp maximize the use of mud vacuums, highpressure water hoses, mud buckets and relatedequipment to recover synthetic or oil-based drillingfluids for reuse/recycling. Daily visual inspections ofthe rig are conducted for identifying spill potentialsand for preventing potential non-compliance events.

Performance Tracking

As an additional value, the Baroid Surface SolutionsSpecialists and Supervisors capture and record all therequired lab results, product certificates, toxicityanalysis and calibration records. They also provide anend-of-well summary of the major environmentalperformance and compliance events that occurredduring the well construction operations.
