PRINCIPAL REPORT
Week 4 already!! What a whirlwind of a term it has been so far!
NAPLAN
Our students in years 3 and 5 completed their NAPLAN tests this
week. Many thanks to Ms Housbey and all of our year 3 and 5
teachers who assisted with this, ensuring that students were calm
and positive and that completion of the tests were smooth and
problem free. Barnier Public School was one of the 550 schools
transitioning to online testing. The feedback received from
students and staff was very positive.
Classroom Visits
This term I will be visiting all classes and teaching students. I
believe this is the best way for a principal to connect with what is
most important in a school, our students and teaching & learning.
So far I’ve taught most Kindergarten classes, I will be working my
way through Stage one classes before heading into Stages 2 & 3.
I’ve really loved my time with the students. They have been very
welcoming, responsive and happy to spend time with me. I am
also in playgrounds most play periods and I have been interacting
with lots of students. They talk about how much they love their
school, their favourite learning and the achievements they are
most proud of. Everywhere I go, I see countless displays of kind,
caring, respectful and considerate behaviour. It’s been a pleasure
getting to know these special people a little better.
Longneck Lagoon
We recently had a number of leaders and SRC students attend a
Leadership/Team Building day at Longneck Lagoon. I received a
call from the staff at Longneck Lagoon the day that they went.
The staff said that our students were the most respectful and
considerate students they had ever had at Longneck Lagoon.
Congratulations to all those students involved. We are extremely
proud of you!!

Student Reports
Our teachers have been very busy writing student reports which
will be sent home to all parents on Thursday in week 10 of this
term. These reports are based on extensive and thorough
assessment processes. Parent/Teacher interviews will take place
early next term. It is very important to make contact with your
child’s teacher sooner rather than later if you have any concerns
regarding your child’s academic progress or wellbeing. It is very
important to keep communication lines open and address any
concerns in a timely manner.
Coles vouchers
Many thanks to all our Barnier families for collecting Coles
vouchers for our school this year. We collected 44,555
vouchers. What an outstanding community effort!! These
vouchers have been delivered to Coles by our staff and we’ll be
communicating via the school newsletter to let parents know what
equipment will be available for the students to use through our
involvement in this program. The equipment takes a while to be
delivered due to the large number of schools involved in this
program. We really appreciate everyone’s support.
Annual School Report and School Plan
Our 2017 Annual School Plan and 2018-2020 School Plan have
been published. They are now on the school website for all
parents to read.
Our School Vision
Our school is a learning community that seeks the greatest possible success for every student through future focused pedagogy, intensive focus on Literacy and Numeracy and the creation of a culture of continuous improvement. We have high expectations of student achievement and behaviour. We believe that parents are valued partners in our education system and actively encourage open, honest, timely and positive communication regarding all matters relating to the wellbeing and education of our students. We strive to provide all students with opportunities to achieve their academic and personal goals within a happy, caring, safe and supportive environment.
Our strategic Directions for the next three years are:
Excellence in Learning
Develop student capabilities through engagement in rich learning
experiences where parents work in partnership with teachers to
develop the whole child.

Learning Support at Barnier Public School – Information for
Parents
We have an exemplary learning and support program at Barnier Public School. Our learning and support staff include Ms Oakman, Ms Hayhow, Ms Juleff, Ms Vasram, Ms Youseff, Ms Gatt and Mrs McCarthy. We also have 5 Staff Learning Support Officers: Ms Watts, Ms Van Akerlaken, Ms Rankin, Ms Xerri and
Ms Noble. In addition to this, our school counsellor, Ms Cole,
provides assistance and guidance to the Learning Support Team and we have ready access to Department of Education Learning and Engagement Officers who have tremendous expertise, knowledge and skill in the area of learning support. The Learning Support Team meets weekly to ensure that students requiring specialised support are placed onto suitable programs and monitored or receiving appropriate adjustments and modifications to existing educational programs or are participating in effective interventions enabling them to experience greater success at school. School funds are used to support students through: specialised programs, classroom and library resources, teacher aide support, differentiation of programs and individualised and group support sessions. Funds are also used to train staff to effectively meet the needs of students requiring support. Students experiencing difficulties with learning as well as gifted and talented students are supported through our learning support programs and initiatives. Helpful Tips …..
Don't be a stranger! Talk to your child's teacher early and when you feel the need. Parent-teacher conferences shouldn't be the only time you connect. Take a moment to introduce yourself to your child's teacher and find out the best way to make contact in the future. Send in your email address and mobile number.

PRINCIPAL REPORT
Learning doesn't stop at 2:45pm. You can help the teacher do a better job by encouraging your children to show you something they are working on at school. Every time your children gets a chance to show off what they know, it builds confidence.
Let your child make mistakes. Teachers don't want perfect students; they want students who try hard. Sometimes parents think every assignment has to be done exactly right, and they can put too much pressure on their children. But it's OK for children to get some problems wrong. Children learn by making mistakes. It's important for teachers to see what students don't know, so they can further support their learning. Teachers are on your side. Some parents go into attack mode when their child complains about a teacher or they take the problem to the principal. Timely, open and honest communication with your child’s teacher can usually sort things out before issues escalate and help build great relationships and better understandings. Our Teachers work hard Teaching isn't easy so it's incredibly uplifting when someone takes the time to say thank you. Why not email when your child enjoys a class event or learning activity? If you feel the teacher is doing a good job, let the principal know.
Warmest regards
Mandy Hollis R/Principal

Chirpy Chickens Come to Visit This Term, Kindergarten are learning about
living things. To help the students reach their
learning outcomes, we had some very chirpy
visitors arrive last week.
The students have eagerly observed the chicks
hatching and watching them grow in the
enclosure. This has also given the students an
opportunity to learn how to handle the chicks,
about their life cycle and about their needs.
If you would like to visit KB or KK’s window,
you can learn all about the life cycle of
chickens.
Stage 3 Debating This year we have two strong debating teams representing Barnier in the Premier’s Debating
Competition. Every debate in the challenge is a one hour preparation debate. Teams do not
know the topic or which side of the debate they are on until one hour before the debate starts.
Once the preparation time is up, three speakers from each team take turns to speak, with a
fourth silent speaker, the team advisor, helping during preparation and during the debate. Our
Blitzers team members are Samuel P, Amaya D, Avni M, Sullivan W and Tia M. On the Blasters
team we have Agam T, Danielle W, Kaia O, Liam H, and Sienna H.
Our debaters are extremely dedicated and we appreciate them giving up their lunchtime every
Tuesday. Our teams have their first round of debates in Week 4 and are very excited to verse
John Palmer Public School and Beresford Road Public School.
Naplan
Over the past two weeks, students from Year 3
and 5 have been completing various NAPLAN
tests. This year was the first time Barnier Public
School completed these tests online. It was a
great success. All the teachers are extremely
proud of all their efforts!
