Locale December 19th 1944: An American Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress serial number 43-38812 (‘812’), 749th Bomb Squadron, 457th Bomb Group, was diverted to RAF Portreath in Cornwall while returning from a bombing mission to Germany. December 23rd 1944: At approx 4.30pm,‘812’ took off from RAF Portreath heading for RAF Glatton, nr Peterborough, its home base. ‘812’ seemingly got lost en-route and crashed into trees near the Triangle at Great Rollright village at 6.15pm, killing all crewmembers except one - Tail Gunner Sgt Clifford A. Heinrich.
