COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis 1-day course will cover the conflicts between security and fire safety in schools. Discuss locking procedures and classroom barricade devices. Considerations and discussion on criteria for when schools should consid-er evacuate vs. defend-in-place vs. relocation in buildings. Discuss if fire officials should consider shelter-in-place; if so what fire protection features should be present in the building. Pull stations, fire alarms and lock-down alarms. Law enforcement and security concerns and much more.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORJohn R. Swanson has worked in the fire service nearly 20 years. He is certi-fied as a Fire Inspector III, Plans Examiner, Firefighter II and NICET certified in fire alarm systems. He serves as a contract instructor for the International Code Council, National Fire Academy, and has provided trainings throughout

His son was diagnosed with autism in 2013 which gave John a person-al interest in fire alarm and safety systems for children with autism.
