Shelter DemographicsBailey’s Crossroads Shelter and Supportive Housing

• 74% of the Bailey’s Shelter residents are male and 26% are female.

• 1/3 of shelter residents are age 51 or older.

• 8% are veterans of the US military.

• 11% are survivors of domestic violence.

• Many of the residents have chronic health problems and other disabilities.

• Most residents have extremely low income.

• The average stay in the shelter is less than two months.

• Services are focused on employment, housing, health, and other basic needs.

Shelter StaffingBailey’s Crossroads Shelter and Supportive Housing

• The facility is currently operated by Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) and supported by several County agencies, primarily the Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH).

• At least four Resident Assistants on duty at all times 24/7 with additional staff and volunteers at different hours.

• During the daytime hours, there is an average of 15 staff members on site, including case managers, administrative staff and volunteers.

• Volunteers provide wonderful support to the shelter, with 2,766 hours of time logged in between July and December 2016.

Shelter OperationsBailey’s Crossroads Shelter and Supportive Housing

• Daily schedule:• Most clients leave the shelter in the morning to go to work, as well as to

health and housing-related appointments.• Clients are encouraged, but not required, to leave the shelter by 9:30 am

and return at 4:30. On-site services are available to engage clients in activities that promote self-sufficiency and housing.

• Curfew: 9:00 pm weekdays, 10:00 pm weekends.

• Hypothermia Prevention program operates from December through March

• Daytime drop-in operates from 9:30 am - 1:00 pm three days per week.

SecurityBailey’s Crossroads Shelter and Supportive Housing

In order to maintain the safety of clients, staff and the community, the following standards and emergency shelter best practices are included in the proposed facility:

• Security cameras • Access control system• Duress alarms• Internal and external rounds conducted every 30 minutes • Strong and cooperative relationship with Fairfax County police • Creation of a Community Advisory Committee to promote routine

communication between neighboring residents, businesses, and the shelter
