We are proud and happy to be able to offer you more information about the story “A skier’s adventure in the Cordillera Real Mountain Range of Bolivia”, published in the current issue of “BACKLINE Backcountry Freeskiing Photo & Story Magazine”. Photos and texts were created by Christian Pondella, a renowned photographer from the US.

Christian Pondella is based in Mammoth, CA, on the spectacular East Side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He is a photographer specializing in adventure sports with an emphasis on skiing. He enjoys traveling to exotic locations through out the world experiencing different cultures and photographing in remote mountain ranges. As an outdoor enthusiast, he spent most of his life participating in athletics which have inspired his photography.

Christian Pondella lebt auf der eindrucksvollen Ostseite der Sierra Nevada in Mammoth, Kalifornien. Als Fotograf ist Christian spezialisiert auf Sportfotografie mit dem Schwerpunkt Skisport. Christ ian genießt es exotische Länder zu bereisen, fremde Kulturen zu erleben und in den entlegensten Bergregionen zu foto-grafieren. Was fasziniert Dich am Fotogra-fieren im Backcountry?Oft ist man nur eine weitere Person in einer Gruppe Skifahrer. Skifahren hat Priorität – sich schnell bewegen, aus der Spur fahren. Und wenn man Fotos macht ist das eher eine foto-journalistische Herangehensweise. Man hält Momente fest, wenn sie passieren. Es gibt keine gestellten Fotos.

Welche Tipps kannst Du Anfängern f ü r d a s F o t o g r a f i e r e n i m Backcountry geben? Bewege dich schnell, sei ein aktiver Teil des Teams, du und die Gruppe dürfen durch die Kamera nicht gebremst werden. Deine Priorität soll-te das Skifahren, nicht das Fotogra-fieren sein. Es muss Spaß machen!

Wie lang fotografierst Du bereits?1995 fing es an, dass meine Fotos professionell veröffentlicht wurden.

Welcher Fotograf inspirierte Dich?Galen Rowell. Er war der Pionier der AbenIteuersportfotografie. Er war einer der ersten, der seine Athletik und seine Liebe zum Abenteuer und Sport verband, und den Sport auf

What do you like about shooting backcountry?Often you are just another person in the group of skiers. Skiing is the first priority—moving fast, breaking trail. And when you shoot photos it is more l ike a photo journalist ic approach. You capture moments as they happen. You are not staging photos.

Which advice would you give beginners if they like to start shooting backcountry?Move fast, be an active member of the team, don’t let your camera slow you or the group down. Your first pr ior i ty should be ski ing, not photography. And have fun!

How long have you been a photo-grapher?I started getting published as a professional in 1995.

Which photographer inspired you?Galen Rowell. He was the pioneer of adventure sports photography. He was one of the first to combine his athleticism and love for adventure and sports, and document it in a way

Warum fasziniert Dich Back-country Freeskiing?Freeskiing und auch Bergsteigen fasziniert mich, da ich einfach selber gerne draußen bin und dort auch sehr gerne fotografiere. Es erlaubt mir, eine wunderschöne Zeit mit meinen Freunden in den Bergen zu verbringen und das Leben zu genießen.

Was würdest Du Anfängern im Backcountry empfehlen?Geht mit erfahrenen Fahrern, die euch den richtigen Weg zeigen. Es gibt keinen Ersatz für Erfahrung. Berge haben keine Favoriten und es ist angebracht mit Demut unterwegs zu sein.

Wie lange fährst Du bereits im Backcountry? Seit 22 Jahren.

Welcher Freeskier hat Deine Karriere am meisten beeinflusst?Glen Plake.

Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?Freesking / Ski Mountaineering is very fascinating to me because it is a sport I love to do as well as photograph. It allows me to spend time in beautiful mountains with my fr iends, ski ing exercis ing and enjoying life.

What kind of advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing?Go out with experienced skiers to show you the right way to do things. Experience is knowledge and their is no substitute for this. The mountain has no favorites and you must have a lot of respect for the mountains.

How long have you been back-country freeskiing?I have been backcountry skiing for 22 years.

Warum fasziniert Dich Back-country Freeskiing?Ich liebe die Berge und das Draußen Sein. Am meisten spüre ich die Kraft der Natur, wenn ich an einem einsamen Ort bin, an dem wenige Menschen und die Berge einfach überwältigend sind. Backcountry Freeskiing ist eine Kombination aus Freeski ing in einer mächtigen Umgebung, die mir das unglaubliche Gefühl der Freiheit gibt. Ganz zu schweigen davon, dass jeder Schwung durch den Aufstieg hart verdient werden muss, was dem ganzen noch viel mehr Wert verleiht!

Was würdest Du Anfängern im Backcountry empfehlen?In den hohen Bergen wird man mit offensichtlichen Risiken konfrontiert, weshalb jede Handlung gut überlegt sein will. Wie macht man das? Nur Erfahrung, ein guter Lehrer und eine gute Portion Glück führen dazu, dass man die Berge voll und ganz genie-

Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?I love the outdoor and being in the mountains. I feel the power of nature most when I am in a remote place where few people go and where the mounta ins are overwhelming. Backcountry f reeski ing is the combination of freeskiing in a powerful environment which give me an incredible sensation of freedom, not mentioning that every turn had to be earned through a previous climb, so each of them has an extra pleasure value!

What kind of advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing? In the big mountains we are constantly dealing with some evident risks which makes any action to be well pondered. How to do that? Only experience, some good tutoring and a decent amount of luck will help you

Wie lange fährst Du bereits im Backcountry?Ich fahre Ski seit ich drei Jahre alt war und in den Dolomiten aufge-wachsen bin. Die Berge waren schon immer ein Teil meines Lebens und ich fing an sie zu erkunden als ich 19 war. Seit 2005 betreibe ich Freeskiing professionell.

Welcher Freeskier hat Deine Karriere am meisten beeinflusst?Ich lasse mich immer von anderen dazu inspirieren, mich zu verbessern und mich weiter an meine Grenzen zu bringen. Ich glaube, beim Ski-fahren gibt es immer die Möglichkeit sich zu verbessern. In meiner Skikarriere wurde ich zuerst von Freunden und Leuten inspiriert, die ich in Verbier und Chamonix traf. Danach habe ich auf berühmtere Skifahrer geschaut, die mit den Jahren meine Freunde wurden. Chris Davenport, Ingrid Backstrom, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Xavier De Le Rue, Candide Tovex sind großartige Beispiele in der Welt des Schnees!

How long have you been back-country freeskiing?I have been skiing since I was 3 and grew up in the Dolomites. The mountains have always been part of my life and I started exploring them on skis when I was 19. I have been freeskiing professionally since 2005.

Who are the freeskiers who had an inspir ing inf luence on your career?I'm always inspired by others to improve myself and push my limits further. I believe that in skiing, there is always room for improvement. In my skiing career First I was inspired by friends and local people I met in Verbier and Chamonix. Afterwards I started looking at more famous skiers whom I became friends with during the next years. People like Chris Davenport, Ingrid Backstrom, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Xavier De Le Rue, Candide Tovex are simply great example in the snow world!

Warum fasziniert Dich Back-country Freeskiing?Meine Faszination fürs Backcountry Freeskiing wird aus vielen Gründen immer größer. Das typische Jo-Jo-Skifahren mit Lift macht großen Spaß, aber es kann etwas monoton werden. Backcountry Freeskiing erlaubt es einem, den Menschen-massen zu entkommen und Zeit mit F reunden be im Sk i fah ren an einsamen und schönen Orten zu verbringen.

Was würdest Du Anfängern im Backcountry empfehlen?Wenn man im Backcountry skifährt ist es wichtig, das Gelände etwas anders zu betrachten, als man es im Skigebiet machen würde. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass es keine Lawinenkontrolle oder Pistenaufsicht gibt und dass alle Zwischenfälle von einem selbst oder den Partnern bewältigt werden müssen.

Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?My fascination for backcountry skiing has continued to grow for many reasons.  The typical lift serve yo-yo skiing is tremendous fun and great for your skiing, but can start to get a bit repetitive.   Backcountry skiing allows you to escape the crowds and spend time skiing with close friends in remote and beautiful places.

What kind of advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing? When skiing in the backcountry it is important to look at the terrain a bit different than you would in the resort.  R e m e m b e r t h a t t h e r e i s n o avalanche control or ski patrol and any incident will have to be handled by you and your partners alone.

Wie lange fährst Du bereits im Backcountry?Ich habe vor über 30 Jahren angefangen und fahre seit 18 Jahren Ski im Backcountry.

Welcher Freeskier hat Deine Karriere am meisten beeinflusst?Ich bin damit groß geworden, Scot Schmidt und Glen Plake, vor allem in den Filmen License to thrill und Blizzard of ahhhs zu erleben. Später hatte Doug Coombs großen Einfluss auf mein Skifahren.

How long have you been back-country freeskiing?I starting skiing over 30 years ago and have been sk i ing in the backcountry for the past 18 years.

Who are the freeskiers who had an inspir ing inf luence on your career?I grew up watching Scot Schmidt and Glen Plake ski, especially in the movies License to thrill and Blizzard of ahhhs.  Later, Doug Coombs had a great influence on my skiing.

Mit monotonem Knirschen brechen die Steigeisen durch den gefrorenen Schnee. Gleichförmig setzen wir einen Fuß vor den anderen.Während wir langsam aufsteigen, gehen Verstand, Gedanken und Atmung in einen tranceähnlichen Bewusst-seinszustand über.Al les ist in Harmonie. Wir sind auf einem riesigen Berg mit endlos offener Weite rund um uns. Al les ist fokussiert auf den nächsten Schritt, auf die nächsten paar Meter. Ich schaue nach oben und sehe, wie zwei Bergsteiger direkt an mir vorbei rutschen, mit einem kurzen Seil verbunden, nur 350 Meter vom Gipfel entfernt. Der Anblick ist surreal, fast wie im Traum. Dann denke ich, dass dies ein seltsamer Ort ist, um im Schnee zu rutschen. Plötzlich wird der Gedanke Realität: Ich sehe, wie zwei Menschen in denTod stürzen ...

As I hike, one foot in front of another – the monotonous crunching sound of crampons penetrating frozen snow – my mind, thoughts and breathing transform into a trance-like state of mind. All becomes harmonious. I am on an enormous mountain with end- less open space around me.

All is focused on each step and the next few feet in front of me. I look up and see two climbers sliding right by me, short-roped to each other, just 350 meters from the summit. The sight is surreal and almost dreamlike as it occurs to me that this is a strange place to be glissading.Then the thought suddenly changes into reality. I am watching two humans fall to their deaths ...

Unsere ersten Schwünge in Bolivien auf der Schulter des Huayana Potosi. Wir begriffen sofort, dass das Skifahren in diesen Bergen steil und hart sein würde! Später lernten wir, dass der Monsun zwei Monate vor unserer Ankunft aufgehört hatte und dass es ziemlich unwahrscheinlich wäre, dass wir weichen Winterschnee sehen würden, da es seit 60 Tagen nicht mehr geschneit hatte.

These were our first steps in Bolivia on the shoulder of Huayana Potosi. We immediately concluded that skiing in these mountains was going to be steep and firm! We later learned the monsoon season had passed two months prior to our arrival so soft winter snow was not likely in the cards for us since it had not snowed in 60 days.

Die Berge in Bolivien erscheinen mit dem Schnee in großen Höhen unglaublich majestätisch. Die meisten Anstiege und Basislager beginnen und liegen in den Tälern, man muss einen langen Fußweg in Kauf nehmen. Es ist ganz normal, dass man den ersten Tag damit verbringt, zum Basislager zu gehen. Vom Basislager gilt es oft noch mehrere Stunden durch Täler und wunderschöne Tundra zu gehen, bis man den Gletscher erreicht.

The mountains of Bolivia are incredibly majestic with most of the snow residing on the upper elevations. Most approaches and base camps start in the valleys below where you will have the mandatory long approach by foot. It is typical to spend your first day of the approach just to get to base camp. From here it can take several hours traveling through the valleys and beautiful tundra before reaching the glacier.
