BACeyeThe “Swiss army knife” for building automation

Obtaining neutral information about data exchange in a BACnet network is not always easy. Especially if the various components have been supplied by different manufacturers. BACeye 2.0 is a cross-functional tool that can be used to clearly visualise networks and quickly identify problems. As a de facto standard, this compact tool by MBS GmbH in Krefeld makes the work of system integrators, commissioning engineers, plant operators and end users considerably easier.

BACeyeThe “Swiss army knife” for building automation

G

Whether at airports, hospitals or office buildings – for professionally commissioning BACnet networks with multiple devices from different manufacturers, every techni-cian dreams of a neutral tool with a wide range of possible applications that can be used right from the start to check whether a system has been set up as intended in terms of the type, number, names and functions of the data points, setting the nec-essary alarms, and much more. A neutral helper like this is also welcome once the system is up and running, e.g. when malfunctions occur between the central control system and the devices at field level.

Handling variety

As a leading international standard, the BACnet net-work protocol has already greatly simplified the exchange of data between devices from different manufacturers. But when inconsistencies arise in the network, diagnosis can be complicated and time-con-suming – the variety of products and manufacturers in the world of building automation becomes a stumbling block. BACeye is an effective means of gaining neutral information on data exchange. Launched by Krefeld-based MBS GmbH in 2014, the tool can be used to handle a range of tasks in BACnet networks.

The current BACeye version is 2.0. Based on the BAC-net standard in protocol revision 14, it establishes a direct relationship between field level and control technology. It covers the entire network with all its devices, visualising them in a clearly arranged manner corresponding to the BACnet structure and allowing users to access them easily. The properties of every device at field level can be displayed as a list that can be sorted as well as searched. Moreover, properties for each object can be both displayed and edited.

BACeye 2.0 is a unique cross-vendor tool. Previously, most manufacturers of building automation devices of-fered only tools developed for their own product lines, which therefore could not be used with other devices. With its neutral visualisation, the MBS tool has mean-while become the de facto standard to such an extent that some manufacturers no longer offer their own de-velopments – instead, they rely on BACeye.

A single tool for a wide range of tasks

In addition to these basic functions, BACeye 2.0 also comprises other features for analysing BACnet net-works; for example:

• Communications can be recorded in packet proto-cols in order to log the read out and written values. These packet logs can be subsequently visualised with the appropriate software (Wireshark).

• Data point lists can be generated as EDE files.

• System-specific formatted data point lists can be ex-ported.

• Trendlogdaten can be read to constitute a list or graphically and exported to document the exchange of information.

• Schedulers can be graphically displayed clearly and parameters.

• Object properties can be exported as a csv file, which can be opened using text or spreadsheet pro-grammes.

• The Back-up/Restore functions facilitate backing up and restoring data from BACnet devices irrespective of product.

• EventSummary: This summary provides a list of all currently, in each device, present disorders (if any).

Plug-in for BACeye

The MERViSOFT software TRIC DB can be integrated as an option in BACeye, thus simplifying project controlling in building automation. The plug-in makes it possible to com-pare an existing network with planning, as well as to use the planned structure in order to organise the BACnet data. Furthermore, BACeye access to the system data of the TRIC projection makes it possible to connect the scanned BACnet data points with the data from TRIC. BACeye can also be used as a tool for testing the BACnet data content in the automation stations.

Streamlined processes

BACeye was not designed for daily system operations; it is used for commissioning, maintenance, diagnostics and repairs. In short, the tool helps to identify problems. In contrast to the rather more abstract pre-sentation in control technology, it provides clear and detailed informa-tion on relationships at field level. It can be used to accelerate the com-missioning of BACnet networks, maintenance or diagnostic processes. If misunderstandings between different parties occur, the events can be neutrally displayed and, if necessary, documented.

In programming the tool, MBS focused heavily on the needs of its cus-tomers – some of whom consider this tool as useful as a Swiss army knife. Which is why they have become actively involved in its further development. The latest version, 2.0, is based largely on user feed-back. BACeye is not just a by-product, but a sophisticated tool for build-ing automation.

Customer feedback taken into account

And that will also be true in the future. More functionalities to enhance the tool are already in the pipeline. In developing BACeye further, MBS will continue to follow advancements in the BACnet standard, which is after all also constantly evolving. There will soon be options to gen-erate or delete new objects, and a plug-in interface will facilitate the integration of other tools. Its customer focus will help BACeye win over all users and manufacturers who appreciate a compact, neutral tool in building automation.

Exports Property values of devices as a csv fileBACnet objects have different properties, some of these properties will be issued within the EDE file. BACeye are also properties that are not part of the EDE file. This feature allows collecting any Propertie, which can then be saved in a csv format.

Name mappings for proprietary objects, properties, and enumerationsWith BACnet you have the opportunity to define your own "proprietary" objects and properties. The BACnet standard has provided for a range of numbers outside the range of predefined objects. With this functionality, we allow to store users names and descriptions to the numbers. This "proprietary" objects and content can then be found again and displayed in BACnet.

Detailed specification of query parameters for log bufferWhen reading the Logbuffers detailed infor-mation can be provided how the reading should take place.

Recording the BACnet communication in packet logsIf values are read and written this function captures which communication is actually made between the devices. The captured Paketlogs can be visualized with an appropriate software (for example, Wireshark).

Triggering ReinitializeDevice ServiceBy using the service "initialize device" you can initiate a Backup & Restore, on the other hand you can communicate to the device to perform a re-initialization (for example, cold start, warm start).

Triggering Time Sync / Time UTC sync serviceBACeye sends the device a actual time, so that it is adopted.

A free demo version can be downloaded at www.baceye.comBACeye Store - www.baceye.com/kaufenBACeye is provided with single-user licences. You will get your own personal licence key on purchase. This releases all available software functions. After buying the software you will receive the software key by email within two working days. You do not want to buy online? No problem. We will be happy to take your order by telephone or email. entgegen.

System Requirements: Windows 7 32 Bit / 64 Bit, Windows 8 32 / 64 Bit, Windows 8.1 32 / 64 Bit, Windows Server 2008 R2 64 Bit, Windows 2009 Server 32 Bit / 64 Bit Hardware requirements: Standard PC, 60 MB free hard drive memory, Ethernet network card. For communication with BACnet MS / TP networks, a BACnet MS / TP router (eg MBS UBR-01) is required.

Current version number: 2.0

Change view and history view of the values in the Watch ListIn order to observe changes in the value of several properties, these can be added to BACeye to the Watchlist. This list contains the respective actual values how often the value has been changed and logged in value per property. The user can therefore view a history of the last values and then export these values.

A persistent storage of values does not happen (apart from exports, which must be controlled manually).

BACnet networksUsing the BACnet Who-Is/I-Am services, devices in the network can be simply identified and a copy of the device properties and objects imported. A detailed display of all objects allows access to the object properties.

AlarmsReceive and display BACnet eventnotifications (fault and operating messages). Confirm BACnet event notifications.

EDE-FilesVery easily generate EDE files. The EDE file (Engineering Data Exchange) is a format for a BACnet data point list, specified by the BACnet Interest Group Europe (BIG-EU).

WatchlistThe monitoring list shows the most important properties of selected objects. Objects can be compiled from the same or from different devices.

Trend dataRead trend data. Display trend data as a curve or as a list.

BACeyeFeatures *

Triggering DeviceC ommunication Control serviceOn the Device Communication Control one device can be informed that it has to discontinue or reducing its communication - or take up again. e.g. only respond if asked (no longer communicate on its own initiative), no longer communicate ... etc.

EventSummaryThis summary provides a list of all currently, in each device, present disorders (if any).

Write on proprietary propertiesMake changes in the value of "proprietary" Properties.

Comfort dialog for annotatable objectsAnnotatable objects do not have a current value "Present Value" but rather a so-called Priority Array. The Priority array includes 16 possible values. It will always display the highest priority value as "Present Value" .If two write commands are triggered to such an object initially act the higher the priority. BACeye offers the opportunity to see all 16 values simultaneously and to change. An exception is the priority 6, which is closed to user access.

OWS profileIn BACnet standard are various profiles defined describing the corresponding device classes and the functionality of the respective device. (B) OWS stands for "(BACnet) Operator WorkStation".

SchedulersWith BACeye, BACnet Calendar and Schedule objects can be comfortably displayed and modified. The weekly schedule and the exception schedule can be modified separately. The combined display provides an overview of the actual acting value“.
