Fabric Trends for the SeasonBy Tina Mellino, Interior and Lifestyle Designer, Allied ASID

As a design professional, one subject I often getasked about is color and pattern palette trends. Howmuch longer will gray be in? What patterns and printshave the most longevity, and what is trending in thedesign forefront? Along with paint companies, I alwayslook to stellar fabric houses for their latest forecast incolor, pattern and material leads.

Pindler, an industry pioneer and leader in the art of fabric design anddevelopment, provides uniquely sourced fabrics, materials and trims fromall over the world. Their top trends recently released include:

The return of Large Florals and Chintz. A classic for traditional andtransitional, upholstery florals are returning in the form of large livelystatement florals that bring numerous color options and energy to designa room around. Along with floral prints, we are also seeing a return to‘Tropical & Botanical’ prints like luscious greens and intense pops ofcolor with a contemporary twist.

Color is rich and saturated. Shadesof green are inspired by outdoor ele-ments and are even more vibrant whenused in plush pile velvet and silk blends.Blues are here to stay and are reimaginedas ‘Jewel Blue’ and ‘Inky-Blue’ a greatneutral treated with high-intensity juststeps away from ‘peacock blue.’

Orange-Spice has returned addingwarmth to any space and is a favorite intransitional spaces. Yellow is consideredan emerging color trend seen in deepgold to antiqued mustard following thekitchen and bath ‘brass finish trend’ thathas been leading the way.

Midcentury Geos. Midcentury mad-ness continues with modern architectural inspiration featuring boldshapes, clean lines and geometric minimalism. Black and white combi-nations and punchy ‘pop-colors’ in luxe fabric applications like velvet andembroidery give midcentury designs extra staying power.

Committed to Bettering Lives and Healing Addiction with Dignity, Fountain HillsRecovery Launches #Makethecall Campaign to Address Addiction Crisis Head On

My eyes well up when I think about my father, Maurice Marston, onwhat would have been his 67th birthday. I believe I could’ve done moreto save his life. However, my Dad, the 30-year Fire Captain who savedlives for a living, was overtaken by his own battle with drugs and alcohol. As a result, we didn’t speak for years, however before he died we reunitedfor a very short time for which I’ll be eternally grateful.

After he passed away, Ifelt a lot of guilt. I’m notsure if guilt is the rightword as there was a little bitof denial about him havingthe issues as severe as hedid. I wished I had triedharder to get him the helphe needed. I wasn’t able tohelp my father with hisstruggles, and that will for-ever weigh heavy on me.However, going forwardmy husband John Salemand I wanted to help others

emerge from this downward spiral by founding Fountain Hills Recovery.-Natalie Marston-Salem, Founder, Fountain Hills Recovery

This Fall Fountain Hills Recovery is launching an important cam-paign to empower those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction andtheir families to seek help. “In light of several recent celebrity drug andalcohol overdose deaths, the addiction epidemic continues to spiral outof control, and the consequences of drug use and addiction are increas-ingly severe,” Marston-Salem said. “We launched the #MaketheCallcampaign to motivate people to pick up the phone and call if someonethey love is abusing drugs and/or alcohol. That one phone call couldsave someone’s life.”

Fountain Hills Recovery is a Licensed, Joint Commission AccreditedCenter that specializes in Dual Diagnosis, Addiction, Substance andAlcohol use disorders. Mental and behavioral health issues, sexual addic-tion, alcohol/drug use disorder, eating disorder, self-harming and suicidalidealizations are among the numerous issues they treat at their center. These addiction treatment services include personalized therapy thatincorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), 12-step addiction treat-ment, non-12-step treatment, dual diagnosis, holistic modalities such asacupuncture, yoga, meditation, fitness training, recreational outings andmuch more. At Fountain Hills Recovery your safety and recovery are thetop priority.

The award-winning drug and alcohol rehabilitation center offers one ofthe most advanced treatment protocols in Arizona. Specialty programsincorporate many other forms of therapy in care plans such as EMDR,Trauma Group, Family Adventure, Art and Equine Therapy as well as med-itation and yoga. With a ratio of one therapist to eight patients, FountainHills Recovery offers highly-personalized care in an intimate setting. Theirphysician-led multidisciplinary treatment team provides an integrated, holistic approach to treatment that creates long-term effective sobriety.

“Our initial goal was to bring awareness to first responders, firefight-ers, law enforcement officers and veterans struggling with substanceabuse issues. We quickly learned however, that this disease does not dis-criminate based upon your career or social status, it’s an epidemic that notonly affects the individual struggling, it affects their families as well.Since we’ve opened in November, 2016, we have seen many types of indi-viduals seeking help for their addiction(s), anyone from doctors andlawyers to athletes and college students. The damage it causes families isdevastating,” Marston-Salem explains.

The #MakeTheCall campaign is designed to be a call-to-action initiativethat encourages people to step up for the ones they love and make the first

step in recovery. So many times people are scared tomake that first call because they are fearful of the judg-ment, or they just don’t know where to turn. Manytimes in those cases, people continue to use for a whilebefore the unthinkable occurs. “Every single patientthat goes through our program tells us ‘I just wish Iwould have made the call sooner,’ Marston-Salemsays. “There is truly nothing worse than being on thereceiving end of a phone call to find out your loved onehas died from an overdose or suicide,” she said.

Fountain Hills Recovery is committed to helpingpeople heal with dignity and grace in comfortable set-tings that truly feel like home. “We work with manyhigh profile individuals, including Fortune 500 busi-ness leaders, professional athletes, musicians, celebri-ties, and many well-known socialites, doctors, lawyers and CEOs. The people we treat are yourfriends and neighbors. Comfort and confidentialityare extremely important to our clientele, so we’vedeveloped a program that caters specifically to thosepeople,” she said.

Making the decision to enter a rehab program is noteasy. It’s especially not easy when the living environ-ment is uncomfortable or you have a hard time relat-ing to the other people there. “At Fountain HillsRecovery, the majority of our patients are successful

individuals looking to make a change for the better,” Marston-Salem said.“Entering the program knowing that you are going to be surrounded byother like-minded people and staying at one of the most stunning luxuryhomes in Arizona takes a lot of the fear and anxiety out of the equation,so you can focus exclusively on rebuilding yourself and reconnecting withyour family,” she said.

Fountain Hills Recovery overlooks the world famous fountain nestledin the center of Fountain Hills Park, the namesake of the lovely townwhich boasts peace and tranquility. Conveniently located just 15 minutesoutside Scottsdale, the stunning and peaceful community of FountainHills feels like it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Valleyand your daily life. Fountain Hills Recovery is environment that promoteshealing in addition to the best possible treatment, clinical programs andamenities when struggling with these debilitating issues. They providetwo, multi-million dollar homes that serve as living accommodations. Themen reside in Vista house, a $3.9 million, 12,000 square foot home with amovie theater, spa, home gym and elevator. The female patients reside inthe 8,000 square foot Sonoran house which provides much of the sameamenities as the male house and sits on 11 acres of land with an unob-structed view of the Fountain.

Fountain Hills Recovery offers an intensive inpatient program focusedon healing from the inside out. The patient is removed from their everyday

environment away from the daily triggers that led to theabuse. Most people going through this process find the dis-connect from the stresses of life that are feeding their addic-tions to be a welcome relief. Patients typically stay in theprogram a minimum of 30 days – throughout that processthey receive intensive personal therapy and participate in arigorous recovery program with the support and the compas-sion they deserve.

“Fountain Hills Recovery was founded in dedication tothe memory of my father,” Marston-Salem said. “Part ofthe passion that drives us and our business is knowing thatwe’re helping others target core issues that led them toabuse and provide them with life skills that will allow themto move forward and live healthier, more productivelives. Fountain Hills Recovery also offers outpatient treat-ment and personalized programs designed for executiveswho want to seek treatment and still need to maintain theirday-to-day business operations,” she said.

Staff is comprised of clinical and medical directors, behavioral and trauma therapists who are highly educated, trained and experienced in addressing the underlying causesand conditions that led to the addiction. Many of theirpatients have dual diagnoses, i.e., PTSD and bipolar, ordepression and anxiety, and they treat a variety of addictionsincluding alcoholism, cocaine, opiates, gambling addiction

and more. They provide them with a safe place to thoroughly addresstheir addiction(s)/issues.

OdySea Aquarium welcomes its newestexhibit for visitors this November! Guests areinvited to dive beneath the surface of the world’srivers in the new exhibition “Monster Fish: InSearch of the Last River Giants,” openingNovember 10th. Enormous in size and rapidlydwindling in number, these ancient fish playcritical roles in their freshwater habitats. Dr.Zeb Hogan, Aquatic Ecologist, NationalGeographic Fellow and host of the Nat GeoWILD series “Monster Fish,” has spent nearlytwo decades searching for and studying the rare, large freshwater fish species profiled in the exhi-bition. The interactive exhibition will includefive extraordinary, life-size sculptures of mon-ster fish as well as videos and hands-on interac-tive activities for audiences of all ages.“Monster Fish” will remain open at OdySeaAquarium until May 5th, 2019.

“Monster Fish” takes visitors on a journey toriver basins around the world to learn aboutcolossal fish and the people that depend onthem. Through detailed maps, sculptures andcustom illustrations, the exhibition showcasesclose to 20 fish species and their diverse fresh-water ecosystems. In addition to highlightingthe biology of each species, the exhibit depictsthe cultural ties between the fish and local peo-ple. From mythical tales and storied traditionsto threats and conservation efforts, visitors willleave with a greater understanding of the con-nection between humans and fish.

“This fascinating exhibition is a trip aroundthe world with one of Nat Geo’s favoriteExplorers in search of bizarre and extraordinaryspecies of freshwater fish,” said NationalGeographic’s Vice President of PublicExperiences, Kathryn Keane. “Zeb Hoganshows us that despite their size, these fish are anincreasingly fragile link in some of the mostimportant freshwater ecosystems on Earth.”

In addition to life-size models and live fish (notmonster varieties) in aquariums representing vari-ous habitats, “Monster Fish” features several inter-active elements and games designed to providevisitors with opportunities to learn about howmonster fish grow; how scientists study them; andhow anglers and others can help these fish survive. In “Monster Size Me,” users maneuver a marblethrough a circular obstacle course, avoidingthreats like invasive species and dams and seekingways to grow areas like protected habitats. In“Minnow or Monster,” groups can step onto alarge scale to see their equivalent weight in mon-ster fish. The “Go Fish” game invites children touse magnetic fishing poles to catch fish and thenplace them into a chute for release back into theriver. A model boat serves as a theater, whichguests can climb aboard to view five video shortsfeaturing Hogan talking about what it is like tosearch the world for monster fish.

Hogan’s Nat Geo WILD series “Monster Fish,”is currently in its seventh season. In each episode,Hogan immerses himself in a local culture, wherefishing is often more than a sport or even a profes-sion — it’s a way of life. He tastes the regionalcuisine, mingles at fish markets, listens to the har-rowing stories of native fishermen and sleepswhere his local guides do. Ranch NationBy Pam Vincent, General Manager,

The Adobe Restaurant at The Arizona Biltmore Golf ClubI recently read an article in the New York Times

about how we’ve become a “Ranch Nation.” Youknow the condiment many put on everything and seem-ingly consume by the gallon. Being in the food andbeverage industry, the article got me thinking, what isthe strangest thing I’ve ever seen ranch added to? I’lllet you noodle on that and we’ll get back to it later.

In addition to being used as a salad dressing, ranchis a typical dip for things like chicken wings, carrots,

celery, French fries, tortilla chips, mozzarella sticks, zucchini chips, friedmushrooms, tater tots, onion rings, jalapeno poppers, chicken fingers andpizza. Ranch is used in recipes for things like macaroni and cheese, pota-to salad and casseroles, while the dry spice mix is sprinkled on popcorn, biscuits and party mixes.

The history of ranch is interesting. According to the New York Timesarticle and Wikipedia (which is always right), Steve Henson, a plumberfrom Nebraska, came up with the dressing mix around 1950. During astint near Anchorage as a construction worker, Henson would also serveas an occasional cook for the crew. In the 1950s in Alaska, perishableingredients like fresh herbs, garlic and onions, and dairy products werenot easy to obtain, so Henson improvised and developed ranch. A fewyears later, as demand grew for the product, Steve and his wife moved toCalifornia, purchased a ranch near Santa Barbara, and renamed it HiddenValley. Soon after, they began packaging the dry ingredients in an enve-lope that could be mailed or sold directly to customers. Customers wouldthen add their own buttermilk and mayonnaise at home.

The rest, as they say, is history as ranch now sits atop the condimentleaderboard.

So what is the strangest food item I’ve ever witnessed ranch added to?Two oddities come to mind — spaghetti and meat sauce and an expensivepiece of halibut. I hope to see you and your family soon at The AdobeRestaurant. Cheers! v

Temperatures Fall; Golf Season is HereBy Tina Tombs, Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

As we turn the page to October, golf season isstarting to creep up on us here in the desert Southwest.Soon, most of the country will be waist high in snow, while here we’ll be in short sleeves chasing a golf ballaround the Arizona Biltmore’s Links and Adobecourses. We often forget just how lucky we are to livein paradise.

As the golf season approaches, I encourage you totake five minutes and think about your golf game.

Think about what you like about your game and what you don’t like.Grab paper and a pen and list the top 5 things you would like to improveabout your golf game. Try to think outside the box and answer ques-tions, such as:

• Was your warm-up routine long enough?• Did you stretch?• Did you hit a few chips, pitches, bunker shots and lag putts before

going to the first tee? • How well did you manage your skill level on the course? • How was your focus and commitment on the golf course?• Did you risk too much when playing certain shots? • Did multiple bad decisions lead to big numbers and drive up your score? And finally, did you have a golf instructor work with you on your

swing mechanics, mental focus and preparation? Did you take a playinglesson and review an on-course game plan?

If the answer to any, most, or all of those questions falls into the “no”category, perhaps before this golf season, you should devise a game planthat will address any weak links in your game.

Do yourself a favor and go through the exercise described above. Ifyou don’t have a teacher/coach and you truly would like to take yourgame to the next level, this might be the golf season to enlist an expert tohelp you. Make this the season that golf changes for you.

You may contact Tina at www.tinatombsgolf.com to book your nextsession. Be sure to look for her clinic and game changer schedules. v

Make Your Home Safe For Trick-Or-TreatersThese helpful hints should make Halloween safer

for all.• Secure the railings around your steps and entry.• Clear walkways of tripping hazards like hoses,

sprinklers and loose gravel and turn off irrigationsystem in plenty of time for the big night so yourlawn and walkways have a chance to dry.

• Avoid using candles. Costumes, paper decorations and straw cancatch on fire very easily. Try candles powered by batteries or useglow sticks.

• Consider candy choices. Avoid candy that poses a choking hazardfor toddlers. Keep in mind some children are allergic to peanuts.Check the candy bag label for a peanut allergy warning.

• Lighting is very important. Be sure your yard is well lighted, path-ways and porches bright and motion sensor lights are active.

• Contain your pets. They may scare a trick-or-treater, or visa versa, knock a toddler down or scare a teen into the street.

• Finally remember, children are more likely to be struck by a motorvehicle on Halloween than any other day of the year. Keep yourcar in the garage and always trick-or-treat on foot. This can avoidvandalism as well. v
