Chain of Responsibility Legislation

What If Your Trucks Were Overloaded?

The RTA is cracking down on overweight trucks because overloading a vehicle can signicantly

impair the driver’s ability to brake and steer correctly and is a danger to the driver, passengers,

other road users and pedestrians.

The Bureau of Transport Economics’ (BTE) 2000 Report on Road Crash Costs in Australia is still

regarded as the most authoritative source available on the economic cost of road crashes. The

BTE crash cost estimates has been updated to 2008 showing the average cost of a fatal crash is

$2.27M (which takes into account loss of future earnings, etc.), and the average cost of a serious

injury resulting from crash is $560,000.

Do you know why the Road Trafc Authorities enforces the overloading provisions in

the Chain of Responsibility Legislation?

1. Overloaded Trucks cause excessive wear and damage to roads, bridges and pavements;

2. Serious overloading can affect your driver’s safety by making the vehicle less stable, difcult to

steer and taking longer to stop when braking

3. Overloaded Trucks give an unfair competition to other haulers doing the right thing. In the long

term, keeping within weight limits may keep you employed and your rm in business; and

4. Overloaded vehicles are illegal - this may affect the insurance cover for the vehicle.

The penalty for overloading a vehicle may exceed $2,200 for an individual and $11,000

for a corporation, per incident.

Heavy vehicles represent 2.5 per cent of all registered vehicles in New South Wales,

but account for 8 per cent of vehicle kilometres travelled and 21 per cent of fatalitieson New South Wales roads. NSW Government Response Road Safety Roundtable

 Your Weighbridge Is An Investment

Manufactured In Trade And Non Trade Congurations

Built To Last And Stand The Test Of Time.

So you’ve decided you need a weighbridge! The purchase of a

weighbridge is a wise investment but, like any investment, it

requires some research and thought to ensure you get the

most for your dollar.

According to the ATO depreciation schedule, they allow 25 years

to depreciate a weighbridge. So your Weighbridge is a long

term investment. You need to consider the placement of your

weighbridge carefully. It’s essential to assess the impact of the

weighbridge location on your current and future use of your site.

You don’t have to look at too many weighbridge brochures to

become thoroughly confused about what’s available, what’s

important and what’s not to you. Generally, there are two basic

types of weighbridges used to weigh trucks;

1. Axle load weighbridges which are used to weigh 1 or 2

or multiple axles at a time to comply with the Chain of

Responsibility and its associated ”legal ramications” with

regards to heavy vehicle (>4.5t) axle weights. (Trade

 Approved and Non Trade Options)

2. Full-length truck weighbridges which weigh the entire truck

at one time and can also have split decks for axle weighing,

to comply with the Chain of Responsibility and all associated

legal ramications with regards to heavy vehicle (>4.5t) axle

weights.

A weighbridge can have a very tough life, often in extremely

arduous conditions. It won’t take long to see the impact of

a poorly designed and inadequately protected weighbridge

because it will quickly show signs of deterioration, which will

eventually affect its performance and reliability.

AWE designs the Freight-Weigh weighbridges for Australian

conditions and a lifetime of heavy duty weighing. Our proven

robust designed platforms are engineered and manufacturedinhouse, to the highest standards, providing our customers with

a lifetime of reliable and accurate service.

9 Commercial Reasons Why Your Business Needs An Above Ground Weighbridge

Heavy Vehicles Represent 2.5% Of All Registered Vehicles In New South Wales, But

9 Commercial Business Reasons Why You Need an Above Ground Weighbridge

1.  Your trucks will Comply with the Chain of Responsibility, so you don’t have to worry about the

crippling CoR nes for having overweight trucks on the streets.

2.  Improve productivity and efciency, because you will only be loading your trucks

once, with the correct weight.

3.  You won’t be losing revenue by sending out underweight trucks.

4. Overloaded trucks use more fuel because, as your truck’s gross weigh increases,

 your fuel economy decreases.

5.  Increase your trucks life and lower your maintenance costs, because constant overloading will

destroy your trucks.

6.  An average articulated truck has a relative rating of 2.65 compared to a 2 tonne car

which is rated at 1/2250. Hence:

An articulated truck is equivalent to 6000 cars.

A standard axle tted with dual tyres and loaded to 8.2 tonnes will cause 2250 times more

damage than a car.

The same standard axle loaded to 10 tonnes will double the damage to the road pavement.

7. Meet your duty of care, by providing a safer Workplace, and your drivers will feel safer because

your trucks are loaded within safe legal load limits.

8. Your Weighbridge creates a record of the loaded weight for each trip so that

you can prove your trucks are within the relevant mass limits, promoting betterrelationships with enforcement agencies.

9.  Overloading causes a lot of damage to roads and bridges, forcing us to pay more taxes to make

up for the shortfall.

How The Freight-Weigh Above Ground Weighbridge Works

 A Typical Example

1.  Trucks wait for clearance to access Weighbridge ramps (either

Trafc Lights, Speakers, Large Displays optional)

2. Once the go ahead is given, the truck travels slowly

up the ramps on to the weighbride deck, stopping

when truck fully on deck

3.  The bridge has been calibrated to Zero, the load cells, detects

a change in weight.

4. The Load Cell sensing or spring element is designed to

detect strain of the weight directly proportional to the

load applied.

5. The strain gauges, are usually connected in multiples of four,

called a Wheatstone bridge conguration - converting the

very small change in resistance into a usable electrical signal.

6. The electrical signal is converted by the

instrumentation, and shows the trucks weight on the

indicators

7. The driver and operator now know if the truck complies with

CoR Legislation

8. The truck driver can exit via the ramp once the go

ahead is given and it is safe to proceed.

9. The truck can then proceed on its journey or reload their

truck within legal, to make sure the trucks are not under or

overloaded.

The 3 Must Have Elements, To Make Sure YourWeighbridge, Keeps Working

Its important to have a weighbridge because if you go out on public streetthe RTA can breach you for exceeding your weights, so it’s very costly. In thelast 5 years all of the Government Controlling bodies have tolerated peopleoverloading their trucks and trailers. “Our weighbridge saves us money, at$10,000 per tonnes for some nes, it pays for it self in no time.”

John Lovatt, National Security Manager, First Fleet

Galvanished Steel UBeam Frame

The Most Important Consideration In Selecting A

Weighbridge, Is The Structural Integrity Of Your Weighbridge

3 Vital Components for Durability

If you need your weighbridge, to stand up to the punishing abuse of

heavy trucks, then you require 3 components:Strength, Reliability and Qualied Trades People & Service.

It’s like a 3 legged stool, leave out an element and it’s pretty wobbly. Not the desired effect you want in your weighbridge.

Strength

Structural integrity is vital for accurate weighing, so you needto purchase from a reliable vendor. We prefer to manage allsubcontractors to monitor their quality and workmanship. Cost

saving can cause a breach in your weighbridge resulting in costlydowntime or worse, your exposure to overloading and breakingCoR Laws

Because these heavy duty steel UBeams are more rigid, they reduce

excessive exing when loaded, so you get accurate weighing  AWE Galvanise all steel frames and components, to protect your

weighbridge from corrosion. You don’t have worry about your

Weighbridge rusting away.  Every item is checked to make sure it meets the high quality

standards of ISO 9001/2000

AWE FREIGHT-WEIGH ABOVE GROUND WEIGHBRIDGE

Hermetically Sealed Load Cell

Your Weighbridge Is Only As Reliable As The Load Cell,

Which Is The Heart Of Any Weighbridge

The heart of any weighbridge is the load cell. The load cells are

highly accurate transducers, designed to sense force or weight

under a wide range of adverse conditions. They’re the most

essential part of an electronic weighing system, but also the most

vulnerable.

The sensing or spring element is designed in such a way it develops

a strain, directly proportional to the load applied.

The strain gauges, are usually connected in multiples of four, called

a Wheatstone bridge conguration. This converts the very small

change in resistance into a usable electrical signal.

Load cells may be damaged because of shock, overloading, lightning

strikes or heavy surges in current, chemical or moisture ingress,

mishandling (dropping, lifting on cable, etc.),vibration, seismicevents or internal component malfunctioning. The load cell needs to

be properly sealed against the environment

Our Hermetically sealed, stainless steel load cells are made

from 17-4PH stainless steel - which offers the best performance

qualities of any stainless alloy. Hermetically sealed, stainless steel

load cells are more expensive than other load cells due to the

additional costs of sealing the load cell

Hermetic sealing will ensure the integrity of your strain

gauge section of the cell in corrosive or washdown

applications. A true hermetically sealed load cell

incorporates a welded header cover over the gauge

cavity where the cable is attached. The welded header is

the key to preventing moisture penetrating the inner load

cell

Watch out for potted loadcells that are only designed for

“normal” environmental factors encountered in indoor or

protected outdoor weighing applications.

Choosing non-hermetic cells for washdown applications

to save some dollars will result in constant replacements

due to moisture seepage. You don’t save money.  AWE Load Cells Certied by NMI Australia

 AWE’s Protection Against Lighting

ZAP And It’s Fried, Electrostatic Discharge

The Unseen Electronics Destroyer

So what is electrostatic discharge? Electrostatic

Discharge (ESD) also known as static electricity,

is destroying millions of dollars’ worth of

electronic components every year.

“Static electricity refers to the build up of

electric charge on the surface of objects.

The static charges remain on an object until

they either bleed off to ground or are quickly

neutralized by a discharge.” Dhogal (1986).

Basic Electrical Engineering, Volume 1. Tata

McGraw-Hill. p. 41.

When the electric charge accumulates to the

point where the volts can “jump” across an air

gap and the resulting current ow can fuse anddamage the electrical circuits.

Weighbridges are vulnerable to damage by

ESD, the consequences of which can be very

expensive to repair, not to mention the knock-

on effects of your weighbridge being out of

order. A weighbridge, by nature, is unlikely to

be the tallest structure in its locality and so will

rarely be directly struck by lightning. If it doesreceive a direct hit, then no weighbridge in the

world could withstand or dissipate the electrical

energy that would strike it passing through its

load cells as the easiest route to earth.

AWE approaches the problem of lightning

protection from the point of view of preventing

damage from the dissipated energy. We do this

by using a PATENTED load cell assembly unit

which ts components between the groundand the weighbridge deck. Over 25 years

of use on Australian Weighing Equipments

weighbridges around the world has proven this

to be both electrically durable and structurally

strong enough in the most arduous conditions.

We are so condent of our lightning protection

system that under our maintenance contracts

we guarantee to repair any lightning damage

free of charge (Terms & conditions apply).

Galvanising

Structural integrity is one of the most important components of

your weighbridge, for this reason AWE Galvanise all steel frames

and components, to protect your weighbridge from corrosion.

Hot Dipped Galvanising is the gold standard for protecting

steel, “The galvanizers association has advised that astandard galvanized coating may now achieve a coating

life of 50 years in most environments, although urban /

marine use are up to 25 years.”

You don’t have to worry about your Weighbridge rusting away, so

you will not be up for costly maintenance because of corrosion.

Galvanising has a lesser failure rate than powder coating &

paint, because it’s not open to the environment as it binds

to the platform

Exceptional corrosion protection in industrial and marine

environments

Chemical resistance to splash and spillage

Resistance to the effects of fume and immersion in neutral fresh

and salt water

Galvanising Pros Galvanising Cons Implications

Hot Dipped Galanised Galvanising Bath at 450 °C Steel can buckle under such extreme

heat- Fortunately AWE has inhouseRolling and Bending, so if they buckle, they can be straightened

Galvanising more expensive So many companies only offerPowdercoating, to try to keep thecost down, which means they offersubstandard corrosion protection

Powdercoating Pros Powdercoating Cons Implications

Choice of colours Looks good when delivered butscratches easily, with normal wearand tear

Once powdercoating surface is damaged,it open to moisture, and the steel willbegin to rust

Powdercoating looks goodwhen it is delivered

Powdercoat gets scratched tooeasily Powdercoating is not ashard wearing as Galvanising

It depends on what’s important Lookinggood Temporary (until it gets scratched)or going the distance. Protecting yourinvestment. Does not stand up to wearand tear of the constant use of heavytrucks.

Hot Dipped Galvanising Is The Gold StandardFor Protecting Steel

Hot Dipped Galvanising is the Gold Standard for Protecting Steel. Don’t Compromise

the Life of Your Weighbridge, by Accepting Cheap Powdercoating or Inferior Finishes

 Advantages Disadvantages

ConcreteDeck

The exibility of Concrete allows differentcapacity and sizes to meet custom designs

Concrete doesn’t rust  Unaffected by most chemicals  Provides better traction when wet  Concrete will last longer than a steel deck   Concrete can be sourced locally  Transport cheaper because only steel

components require shipping  Platforms come in standard modules from

6 Metres to 60 Metres  Size for size concrete is the most

economical solution

Concrete needs 28 day cure to gainmaximum strength

Not regarded as a portable weighbridge  Concrete requires higher Quality Control

onsite to avoid concrete cracking andfailure

Requires heavier foundations to support itsself weight

Requires concrete supplier within easyaccess of weighbridge site

Electrical weighbridge components areinstalled and wired on site

SteelDeck

Steel decks fully fabricated offsite  Weighbridge modules Installed by Forklift/

Crane so installation is quicker  No need for concrete’s lengthy cure time  Steel deck won’t crack like concrete  Platforms come in standard modules from

6 Metres to 60 Metres  Minimal site wiring (Wired in factory)   AWE Steel decks are galvanised  Steel decks are typically lower in height

(non trade)  Steel deck are easier to relocate  Higher resell value

Powdercoating gets scratched too easily, and is not as hard wearing as Galvanising.(All AWE steel Galvanised to stop rusting)

Reacts to corrosive chemicals  Becomes Slippery when wet  Depending on size, transport cost are high,

because of wide load restrictions  More expensive than concrete

Customised Software

Just as every weighbridge is designed to meet your unique applications,so should your software. AWE designs and writes customised software,

that works with your work processes, rather than making you changeyour systems to suit others “Out-of- the-box” software.

The Bridgemaster software records weights from your weighbridgeinto a database and has the ability to print invoices (dockets), lets youreprint dockets, print reports and maintain a history of transactions on

your site.

The operator or driver can enter details of the load and weigh the

entire truck or each axle group. When the vehicle is weighed you canautomatically save a picture from a video camera (when connected tothe appropriate hardware).

Once the data has been captured, our software allows you to congureyour data, to do whatever you require.

AWE has written 100’s of customised software packages, so yourweighbridge will work with your business systems, rather than trying to

adapt to lazy programming.

Your business has it’s own processes and there is no need to

compromise your operations with inexible software. Our software iscongurable out of the box for most common applications, otherwise wewill reprogram any changes in a cost effective manner.

Your Truck Must Not Exceed The Mass Limits

19

You’re Responsible If Your Trucks Are Overweight !

A vehicle must not be operated at a mass limit that will exceed the:

  Manufacturer’s GVM/GCM;

Manufacturer’s individual component rating (i.e., axles, springs,

tyres etc.); or the

Statutory mass limits or overall axle spacings.

It is the operator’s responsibility to make sure these limits are not

exceeded.

Don’t risk the heavy CoR nes because of overweight trucks.

Single Deck Weighbridges

It is your responsibility to not only ensure your total weight is below

the limit for your truck type but also that the axle weights are notexceeded. You should be aware of the constraints in using a single

deck weighbridge for measuring axle weights.

It’s very difcult to get different axle group loadings accurately

on a Single Deck Weighbridge, with a single weigh operation.

The work around involves making multiple truck

movements, so each axle group, is weighed on the single

weighbridge deck, called Split weighing.

This method requires level ground before and after the

weighbridge to achieve axle weighs.

This Split weighing method requires operatorsknowledge to determine axle group weights and its also

time consuming.

The Multi Deck Weighbridges

Single & Multi Deck Specications

The Multi Deck Weighbridges are designed to provide an efcient method of weighing different

truck axle groups, in a single weigh operation (in most cases)

The Multi Deck can be designed to suit most truck congurations, to minimise truck

repositioning on the weighbridge

Shows the operators & truck drivers the weights of the different axle groups and

displays the total gross weight

Saves time because the driver can get an accurate reading of each axle groups, without havingto keep manoeuvering their truck over the Weighbridge

Interview with John Lovatt from 1st Fleet

Interview with John Lovatt from 1st Fleet, National Security Manager.

So tell me about the your relationship with AWE?

We met 10 years ago, when they were installing a weighbridge at a metal yard, next to one of our

sites. We were looking at putting in a weighbridge, so I went and made myself known and our

relationship grew from there.

We now have weighbridges in 3 states on the Eastern seaboard, Melbourne, Sydney, and

Brisbane. We operate a Freight Express Service and it’s important to have a weighbridge because

if you’re caught by the Police or RTA for sending overweight trucks on the public roads, then

you’re breached for exceeding your weight. The nes are very expensive, so we have to have an

operational weighbridges 24/7 7 days a week.

Has it always been the case?

Yes, more so in the last 5 years because the Police and the RTA won’t tolerate people overloading

their trucks and trailers.

Why are the AWE weighbridges so good, why do you choose them?

“Their service is good, their weighbridges are reliable we load about 20 B doubles

Night & Day so there’s a lot of trafc going over them and they require little

maintenance.

Interview With John Lovatt from 1st Fleet

So basically having a weighbridge saves you money? Yes of course, with nes up to $10,000 per tonnes for exceeding

the weight limits on the roads. So it pays for itself in no time.

So tell me about the weighbridges you got from AWE?

Similar to the one behind you, only longer in Melbourne & the

same in Brisbane.

Why are the AWE weighbridges so good, why do you

choose them?

Their service is good, their Weighbridges are reliable, we load

about 20 B doubles Night & Day so there’s a lot of trafc goingover them and they require little maintenance. But when I do

have problem, it’s only a matter of a phone call away, they’re

ready to answer your calls or send out a technicans for an

emergency.

So what makes AWE stand out from other companies?

Their weighbridges are built to last and they back it up with great

service.

So if another weighbridge company came to you?I wouldn’t go, I’m happy with the team from AWE and their

reliable weighbridges.

If someone was looking for a weighbridge and asked for

your suggestion, of who is best to go with?

I’d refer them to Tim at AWE, because of the great service we’ve

got from AWE over the years. The reliability of their weighbridges

and their customer service stands out. Because whenever you

pick up the phone, someone will answer 24/7.

Your Australian Weighing Equipment Weighbridge is Built to Last

Interview with Ron Bull from Cement Australia

Interview with Ron Bull from Cement Australia

So Ron tell me about this weighbridge you have installed, how long has this been here?

The weighbridges have been installed over the Christmas break period, it was done at this time

because that’s our down period, where we don’t have many trucks, so AWE came in during the

period and installed all of the pads so we could get them operational, as soon as possible after the

New Year period.

So why did you choose this particular weighbridge? What’s unique about it? What’s

special?

We have the difculty with the installation here, that much of the structure and is old structure

and so we are limited by the height we have available. We had contemplated putting in a full

standardised weighbridge, but the amount of work to do than and the space we have was tooprohibitive and these pads solved our problem for us. There low in prole.

What makes them different?

Well they are different because the prole is fairly small and so we can t them and we’re still able

to maintain our distance from our spouts and structures and the weighpads.

What has set apart AWE from other companies supplying weighbridges?

Well there are other companies around that have similar systems, but our relationship with AWE

has been over a reasonable lengthly period of time. Because we have been doing this project and

trying to get the right answers before we launched into doing the project and they have aways been

cooperative and good people to deal with, so we were always keen in the rst place when we gotquotations to deal with AWE and what we got now supports our stance in that regard.

AWE FREIGHT-WEIGH ABOVE GROUND WEIGHBRIDGE

Interview with Ron Bull from Cement Australia

So when you told AWE what you need, what did they do

for you? How did they nd the right solution?

They proposed these pads and showed us and we liked the

concept, we liked the height that was available to us, it was very

small. The pad was as high by a small extent. All was part of the

consideration in dealing with AWE.

How did you nd their service and support?

They have been great, we have never had troubles with AWE. As

soon as we raise an issue it is quickly addressed and solved, no

problems at all.

Can you tell me you have a long relationship with AWE,

How far does that go back?

Me personally about 5 years, so we’ve been doing or preparing

this project for 5 years for about that period of time. So it’s been

a big decision and a lot of money involved obviously. So between

AWE and ourselves we got it right so that’s good.

So over those 5 years what were some of the things that

stuck out?We liked the concept, we like the fact that the pads were only

small in height and we like the people we dealt with and I guess

you put all 3 things together and we got a good combination.

So having a good relationship with AWE is vital part of the

process?

It certainly is a signicant factor yes.

25

We like the relationship we had with AWE; hasbeen good comparing all of the factors andcost associated with equipment. AWE weren’tthe cheapest but were certainly the best in ouropinion.

 AUSTRALIAN WEIGHING EQUIPMENT

Your Australian Weighing Equipment Weighbridge is Built to Last

Interview with Ron Bull from Cement Australia

So is there anything else in the way they work or how the pads works?

Well the reason for putting the pads in is to make our loading installation secure, thats one reason,

we did have the problem before when it was manual loading we might (without weighpads, of

course) overload or underload a truck. That was an inefciency we wanted to get out of the

system and these pads provide the accuracy to load quickly and provide the security we needed.

It also allowed us to automate the loading system properly and inline with our broader plan,

removed the inefciency we had before.

By installing this you were saving money?

We like to think so, that’s how we justify spending the amount money on the project. The projectwill pay for itself over a reasonable amount of time.

Well removing the inefciency of underloading or overloading will certainly save us money because

we’re saving time and we don’t have to. For example, if we overloaded before we had to go back

and pump off the extra product which was on the truck and that all takes time and time is money

and there we save the money and get the justication spending the capital we have. So it is easy

to justify spending the money we did.

What if your Trucks were Overloaded?

While AWE has cost you a lot money short term they have saved you Money?

Correct, we spent a lot of money installing the pads, but the money will be repaid back in a short

period of time and we are quite happy with the benets we will gain from these weighpads.

Any thing else you have got from AWE?

Lots of other smaller things they have done for over 5 years. It’s not as we just come along to

AWE and discovered they were good guys and we gave them a good project. We had a good

experience for sometime.

They’ve done loadcells, weighbridge at Glebe, scales on our Supertankers. Actually the Weighcells

on our supertankers enable us to make sure how much is in each tanker - Supertankers are mobilestorage vessels on road sites that enabled us to keep track of stock, lots of small things. But we

have done business with AWE over several years.

If someone were to ask you there looking for a large outlay for a weighbridge, why

would you recommend AWE?

When we rst looked at this project 5 years ago we did look at other companies and we compared

in quite a reasonable way with the various attributes of the different proposals. As I said before

concepts we liked, the size of the pads we liked and the relationship we had with AWE has been

good comparing all of the factors and cost associated with the equipment. AWE wasn’t the

cheapest but were certainly the best in our opinion.

AWE FREIGHT-WEIGH ABOVE GROUND WEIGHBRIDGE

Case Study at Elf Mushrooms

Elf Mushrooms is situated at 61 Wallace Road, Vineyard in the North West area of Sydney. They

produce approximately 3 million kilograms of mushrooms annually and employ 130 permanent

employees. This makes them the largest mushroom producer in NSW. Elf Mushrooms has been a

family owned company since its beginnings dating back to 1960.

AWE/Rite-Weigh installed their original weighbridge 28 years ago and we still maintain and service

it today.

Problem: They were looking for faster weighing and higher accuracy than their old 5-metre Split

weighing system.

Solution: New relocated – with 28M x 3.5M Pit Weighbridge

Security to see what was in the trucks, camera system showing above trucks

Front and rear number plates, linked to front gate, so if any truck was overloaded

they would not be able to leave the site. Saves having to reload and reweigh trucks

End sensors truck wheels were in connes of the weighbridge

Driver control scanners & printers, no operator required at weighbridge, linked to

ethernet to ofce, less labour without paying someone to sit at weighbridge

The Legal Compliance Required For Your Weighbridge

The Legal Compliance Required For Your Weighbridge

Your weighbridge will require a DA from council

(Consult with your Local Council).

Trade WeighbridgeIf the Weighbridge is to be used for Trade, then it must be pattern

approved. Then tested in accordance with the requirements in

NMI (National Measurement Institute). Test Procedures for Non-

automatic Weighing Instruments to ensure:

1.  They measure to within the maximum permissible errors

specied in the National Measurement Regulations 1999; and

2. They comply with their certicate of approval and carry

a verication mark

Location A weighbridge must be located so:

A vehicle has enough room to move on and off the weighbridge

without having to turn on any platform;

Any indicating or visual summing device is protected from wind

and rain; and

Water, mud or debris does not accumulate on or under a

platform; or in the pit.

 Visibility

An operator must have a clear view of each platform and themeasurement displayed on the indicator, without moving from their

normal operating position. The driver of a vehicle also needs a

clear view of the indicator.

 Approach

An approach to a weighbridge must:

Have a hard, true and durable surface of concrete or another

approved material;

Have perimeters clearly indicated by painted marks or other

approved means;  Be arranged so drainage from the surface of the approach does

not ow into the pit;

Be in the same plane as the platform for a minimum distance

of 3 metres if the platform is less than 18 m or 1 m if the

platform is 18 metres or more (may need to be longer for

end-to-end and axle measurements).

The approach is in the same plane as the platform if:

The surface of the approach is, for its entirety, contained

within an angle of no more than +0.25o of level (horizontal)

measured from the end of the nearer end of the weighbridge;

and

For a multi-platform weighbridge, the dead space (if

applicable) between the platforms of the weighbridge is level

and in the same plane as each of the platforms.

Platform

Each platform of a weighbridge must be composed of concrete,

steel or other approved material.

If a weighbridge has more than one platform:

The dead space between each platform must not exceed

2 metres;

Each platform must operate in a manner that does not affect

the operation of any other platform;

The upper surface of a platform should be in the same plane

as the upper surface of each other platform; and

A summing indicator must be installed.

If a weighbridge does not have a pit:

The clearance under the lowest live part of the platforms

must be at least 150 mm and the oor between the load cell

supports must be composed of concrete at least 75 mm thick.

The weighbridge must be effectively drained and kept free

from any accumulation of water, mud or debris;

The installation must maintain a clearance on each side of

the weighbridge of at least 750 mm from the external edges

of the platform must extend from the oor of the weighbridge

to at least 1 metre above the platforms unless otherwiseapproved by NMI; and The load cell footings must be stable.

FAQ Weighbridges

Questions You Should Consider To Get The Right Weighbridge

How do you intend to use your weighing solution, for Trade or Non Trade?

What purpose do you need Weighbridge

Where do you plan to locate your weighbridge?

What Kind Of Weighbridge Do I Need - Portable, Inground or Above Ground?

What is the largest vehicle you intend to weigh?  Weight for Trucks so not overloaded?

What size trucks do you have?

Do you expect to have bigger trucks in the future?

Do you own site or lease?

Does it need to be be portable?

Do you need to move it to another site or position?

What accessories do you require for your weighing solution?

What type of Trucks do you expect to use on your weighbridge and what is the specication of

vehicles for which the weighbridge is required - eg axle loads, wheel positions and gross vehicle

weight

Will the standard weighbridge pattern suit your workow or operations?

Frequently Asked Questions

What Size Weighbridge Do I Need?

To determine the size of your Weighbridge you need to select a platform, long enough to weigh

the largest truck you anticipate weighing in the future. Weighbridges come in 2 widths to suit most

trucks 3.0 and 3.5 metres, and they can range in size from 6 metres to over 60 metres.

It’s much more expensive to add an extra metre to your weighbridge, 5 years down the track when

your trucks outgrow your initial weighbridge. Your weighbridge needs to t within the area you have

allocated, allowing for a straight approach and departure from the weighbridge.

What is the largest vehicle you intend to weigh?

AWE provides of multiple of standard platform sizes to cater for most common truck types. In

addition to these sizes we also provide custom weighbridges for larger trucks such as B-Triples,

Road Trains, Mining Trucks/Dumpers.

What’s the Difference between Trade & Non Trade?

Trade: A weighbridge is used for trade when it is used, or made available for others to use, to buy

or sell goods, to determine freight or other charges based on weight, or to determine a tax.

Non trade: To check axle group weights and gross vehicle weights. This helps to stop axle

overloading and possible heavy nes.

AWE also provides non-trade approved portable axle weighers systems to help prevent

vehicle overload.

FAQ Weighbridges

What Capacity Can The Weighbridge Weigh?

The platform size, weighing capacity should be selected based on your current and anticipated

needs. The capacities associated with truck scales nominal capacity, is the total measurable load

that can be distributed over the scale platform. Most truck scales have nominal capacities of

20,000kg, 30,000kg 60,000kg 80,000kgs to over 300,000kgs which covers Australia’s highway,

mining, railways maximum capacity for 99% of trucks and railways. Selection of the nominal

capacity is normally not of concern since it is typically great enough to handle all but the mostextreme loads.

Where’s the best location for your weighbridge?

There’s a number of factors which determine the best location for your weighbridge.

Will it compliment your ow of trafc, or cause a trafc bottleneck?

Is your site Geothechnically suitable to take the weight off the weighbridge & trucks?

Do you own or rent the site? Because this will determine whether it needs to be portable or have

a xed location.

How much of a real estate can you allocate for the weighbridge?

An Above Ground weighbridge requires ramps at both ends of Weighbridge. Allow 5-7 metresper ramp including the at 1 metre section before the actual weighbridge. Aboveground Requires

large real estate and impedes clear access to hard stand area. However, an above Ground

Weighbridge is less expensive to install because it requires less civil work and foundations

What type of load cell would work best with a washdown application?

A hermetically sealed stainless steel load cell provides the best protection from water ingress

What is the difference between hermetically sealed and welded seal load cell?

A load cell that is classied as hermetically sealed has both a welded seal and additional hermetic

sealing gland entry area. Welded seal load cells are not protected in the cable entry area.

What about end to end (split) weighing?

Larger vehicles can split weigh their loads, by weighing individual axle groups on a platform smaller

than the vehicle they intend to weigh. The process can be used to capture a legal weight, provided

the concrete approaches are at a suitable length for the vehicle you intend to weigh.

What Do I Do After I have Selected My Weighbridge?

You’ve decided on a weighbridge and are ready to go, but before you sign on the dotted line, there

are a few more things to investigate. First, check with your council to make certain you can place a

weighbridge at your site. Often a DA along with the necessary fees and drawings are required for

installation of a weighbridge. And most importantly, remember to call AWE for the Right

Weighbridge Solution.
