Weigh stations are an important part of Minnesota’s truck size and weight enforcement efforts. They play a key role in protecting the state’s roadway infrastructure and protecting motorists from unsafe vehicles and unqualified drivers. Weigh stations are a partnership between MnDOT and the Minnesota State Patrol. MnDOT owns and maintains the facilities. The State Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division operates them. In addition to weighing operations, State Patrol also conducts commercial vehicle safety inspections and driver qualification checks at weigh stations. Cost benefits of weigh stations: • Less road and bridge repair work needed • Save taxpayer money on road and bridge maintenance and repair • Reduce crashes. In 2014, there were 5,023 truck-involved crashes, a 6% increase from 2013. Most of the crashes happened on interstate highways Why weigh stations are important: • 2.74 billion commercial vehicle miles traveled in 2014 in Minnesota • Minnesota is ranked 38th nationally for pavement condition By 2040, Minnesota is projected to have one million new residents, increasing the demand on our infrastructure • Minnesota truck freight is projected to increase 30 percent by 2030 For more information visit mndot.gov/cvo

State Patrol

Weigh stations protect roads and bridges from illegally overweight vehicles.

Good roads help our economy move – trucks bring us our goods and services.Roads and bridges deteriorate faster when weight restrictions are not followed.

Minnesota has the 5th largest state highway transportation system in the U.S.

Trucks are the most commonly used mode to move freight.
