2016-2018 Zonta International Service Recognition AwardsAll recognition is awarded for activity from 1 June 2016 – 30 April 2018
Eligibility• There are two categories of projects to be considered for the awards:
• Service projects that empower women and girls in general to achieve equal rights and to secure their access to all legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional resources
• Service projects focusing on prevention of violence against women and girls• Consideration for service awards will be given to service projects involving members

community and the visibility and credibility they have provided to Zonta.• Projects that were recognized at previous conventions cannot be resubmitted.
Club Service Projects• A Zonta club may nominate up to two projects, one project in each category.• Nomination form must be signed by the club president.

Committee Report (2016 - 2018)
October 2017
Name of Committee: __Amelia Earhart__________________________________
Committee Chairman: _Helen Lawrence_________________________________
Members of Committee (if applicable):
This first year of the biennium we had three Fellows: Zohrehsadat Asaee - Civil and Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University. Zoreh is now a member of the Halifax, NS club.
Tess Caldwell - Geological Sciences at Brown University
Irene Constantina DeDoussi - Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT). I’ve attached the AE fellow’s bio’s from our Area 4 celebration from January
19, 2017 so you can read about their amazing and important research.
This second year of the biennium we have three fellows, all three from MIT. These outstanding women are; Anne Collin, Catherine Miller and Tam Nguyen. We will honor them at Area/District Meeting in January 2018 and will hear about them and their research/studies and award pins and certificates. It is always an honor to do this. They are always so inspiring. I have had the privilege of coordinating this program for over 20 years and sincerely thank District 1 for this role. I have enjoyed the position and Fellows very much. At this juncture I think it is time to pass the baton. I will be available for consultation/questions. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please see me and or Governor Joanne.
2016 AE Fellow - ZOHREHSADAT ASAEE
Citizenship: Iran
Proposed Program: Civil and Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University
Ms. Asaee will use her fellowship to improve crashworthiness in aircraft. Crashworthiness is defined as the ability to prevent injury and maximize survivors in the event of a collision. She will study advanced composite materials by investigating fiber metal laminates (FML). These materials are composed of lightweight metal sheets within layers of a 3D Fiberglas composite. These Fiberglas fabrics are very new and little work has been done on them. She will conduct experimental and computational studies to characterize the impact response of these new advanced materials, which could lead to safer aircraft. Prior to starting her Ph.D. program, she worked for a number of years as an engineer in Iran and helped to organize several conferences there.
Ms. Asaee volunteers for the Engineering Safety Committee of Civil and Resource
Engineering department of her university. She is also involved in social activities related to
women and children.
2016 AE Fellow - TESS CASWELL
Citizenship: USA
Proposed Program: Geological Sciences at Brown University
Ms. Caswell is studying the subject of tidal dissipation or low-frequency internal friction in ice on planets to understand how other planets can sustain life in their liquid oceans through geologic time, despite very low surface temperatures. She has a mechanical engineering degree and has work experience in the aerospace industry prior to her return to graduate school. To do her work, she has employed her engineering experience in the design and construction of a cryogenic chamber that will maintain temperatures as low as -100° C while being able to measure displacements as small as 10 nanometers. Ms. Caswell hopes her research and engineering background will support her in her goal to realize a childhood passion of human space exploration.
She has worked as a volunteer science teacher at elementary schools and is an instruct or in Aikido
2016 AE Fellow- IRENE CONSTANTINA DEDOUSSI
Citizenship: Greece
Proposed Program: Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Supersonic aircrafts fly within the stratosphere where the ozone layer shows up. Therefore, their emission could result in a degradation of the ozone layer. Ms. Dedoussi is studying this influence using an integrated approach. She is using emissions estimates for different routes that are economically and technically feasible. Her calculations show how sensitive specific species concentrations are to perturbations in emissions in the stratosphere by extending the common atmospheric sensitivity model. Her study will also answer the question whether an ozone-neutral cruising altitude exists.
Besides her research, Ms. Dedoussi is involved in mentoring and outreach efforts of her department in order to promote women in engineering. She enjoys running, swimming and practicing yoga.

Committee Report (2016 - 2018)
October 2017
Name of Committee: Young Women In Public Affairs (YWPA)
Committee Chairman: Jennifer Kerwood, Zonta Club of Berkshire Co.
Members of Committee (if applicable): The following Zontians participated in at least one of the years this biennium: Sandy Carroll, Berkshire, Dana Burton, Quaboag, Terry Pinette, Malden, Judy Carpenter, Truro
The purpose of the YWPA award is to encourage more young women to participate in public affairs by
recognizing their early commitments to volunteerism, leadership, and a dedication to the advancement
of the status of women. Each club is encouraged to solicit applications from young women aged 16-19,
offer a cash award, and name a Club YWPA Winner. Club Presidents then forward their winners on to
the Governor/District level, and one of the Club Winners will be selected to receive a $1,000 District
YWPA Award. All of the District winners then go on to compete for a total of ten $4,000 International
Awards.
The District Committee read and rated applications submitted by Clubs for the District YWPA Award of
$1,000. In April, 2016 we received applications from the Burlington, Concord, Berkshire, Northampton,
Quaboag, and Halifax Clubs. In April 2017 we received them from Halifax, Berkshire, Quaboag and
Burlington. Both years other clubs reported that they solicited applications from their communities but
did not receive any. In both years, the applications from Halifax received the highest rating and won the
District Award. (And Halifax won in 2015 as well).
Greatest committee achievement:
All members report that reading the submitted applications is inspiring and that learning about the
students’ achievements creates great hope for our future. We are particularly proud that the student
from Halifax was chosen for one of the ten $4,000 International awards in 2017 (and also in 2015).
Greatest challenge:
My personal perspective only – finding resources (time and money) to properly promote the award
throughout our district and help all clubs to run a program.
I attached the lists of ZI International winners in 2016 and 2017.
Respectfully submitted,
Jennifer Kerwood
