Our close working relationship with the Aurecon team ensured the X50 expansion was completed to a high quality, within budget and essentially on schedule.”Brad Fish Chief Executive Officer North Queensland Bulk Ports
“
The AUD800 million expansion of Abbot Point Coal Terminal to 50 Mtpa has transformed the port precinct into one of global importance.
Aurecon completed all engineering design and tender procurement for the expansion, which entailed essentially duplicating the entire terminal and upgrading of much of the existing terminal, whilst maintaining the existing plant operation.
Challenging conditions, including record-breaking wet seasons and a volatile construction industry, which included severe labour shortages and spiralling material costs, were overcome with high quality, functional and economic design and experienced project management.

“
A 240 m long incrementally launched bridge provides a new directional ramp joining the R21 North to the N1, and forms part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. The bridge spans eight existing carriageways and was constructed without any disruption to the traffic below.
A special requirement was for the geometry of the bridge to follow an exact circle in space. The launched composite deck consists of an open steel box girder with a concrete slab on top. Aurecon’s design solution
included using long constant section circular piers for aesthetic and clearance reasons.
An aesthetically pleasing structure has been realised through the innovative use of reinforced and prestressed concrete, and the resulting bridge is an asset to South Africa’s road network.

The efficient and cost-effective design of the hangar allows it to hold up to five of Air Nelson’s Bombardier aircraft at one time. Air Nelson can now not only carry out its contracted maintenance obligations, but can also bid for other heavy maintenance contracts for aircraft from around New Zealand and offshore.”
Stephen Hogg Technical Director, Buildings Aurecon
“
Aurecon was the structural engineer for a new hangar facility at Nelson Airport, New Zealand. The hangar is a large 80 m x 60 m free span structural steel building with a clear height of 9.5 m and overall height of 15 m to the apex.
The roof structure was built on the ground with all cladding, insulation, lighting, heaters, and cabling fitted at ground level. Following construction of the roof structure, the roof was jacked up onto concrete columns and the wall cladding finished. A joint free post-tensioned floor was then poured inside the closed in hangar.
Aurecon’s solution met the client’s size requirements, ensured a shorter construction period and allowed for cost savings due to the simple fabrication.

“
The Community Residential Units (CRU) programme was an initiative to build new rental stock and upgrade existing higher density stock in the City of Cape Town.
Aurecon was part of the project team appointed to project manage the roll-out of the refurbishment. While the work had to be carried out in such a way as to minimise inconvenience to tenants, the dwellings needed to be vacated during specific periods. A challenge for the project team was finding an affordable means of providing temporary accommodation. The project demanded a high level of innovation, but at a low cost, to make the widest impact possible, within budget.
To protect and improve the quality of Auckland’s beaches, a new tunnel and outfall was constructed, which allows treated water to be discharged 2.7 km offshore, compared to the previous distance of 600 m.
Aurecon delivered all the detailed design for the tunnel, the marine outfall pipe and the 38 m deep cascade drop shaft, which was the first use of a cascade in New Zealand.
