CATECHETICAL COMMENTSA Series

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

This month we continue with the Fifth Commandment:

You shall not murder.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that wedo not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help andsupport him in every physical need.

In the last issue we established what this

commandment does not say, specifically: it doesnot condemn the killing of animals. (Certainly,God commanded the killing of many animals. Just read the Book of Leviticus!) Nor does itforbid the taking of human life for just cause.(Again, God certainly commanded the taking ofhuman life for just cause. Read the Book ofLeviticus!) This month we consider what this

commandment does say.

The Catechism lists four types of killingforbidden by this commandment: murder, abortion, euthanasia, and suicide. These are all

acts of unjust killing according to the Word ofGod. Since murder is obvious, let’s begin with

abortion. Of this the Catechism says:

“The living but unborn are persons in the sight ofGod from the time of conception. Since abortiontakes a human life, it is not a moral option exceptto prevent the death of another person, themother.”

To defend this claim that the unborn arepersons in the sight of God, the following passagesare brought to bear:

Jer. 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knewyou, and before you were born I consecrated you.

Ps. 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;in Your book were written, every one of them, thedays that were formed for me, when as yet therewas none of them.

According to these passages and others Godwas intimately involved in your creation from themoment you were conceived. In fact, He knewyou already while you were still being formed inyour mother’s womb. He saw your whole life, each and every day of it, before even one day hadcome to pass. Unborn babies are not someshapeless mass of flesh, but human beings withvalue in the eyes of God. What does it say of ourculture when we don’t see that value, when wedare to argue with God and deny what He has soclearly stated? If we cast aside His will concerningthe very formation of life, is it any wonder thatother aspects of His express will are so easilydisdained? Heaven help us!

Thankfully, heaven does help us. Forgive-ness, even for the unjust taking of human lifethrough abortion, is available for all at the foot ofthe cross through repentance and faith. Pray thatGod would continue to turn hearts to Him, thatwe may cherish the life He gives and protect anddefend the most vulnerable among us. T

Humbly in His service,Rev. Steven S. Billings

Senior Pastor

Question 52: What does God forbid in theFifth Commandment?

A. God forbids us to take the life of anotherperson (murder, abortion, euthanasia) orour own life (suicide).

Nurse News-Mary Howden, Parish Nurse

Hot Flashes, Mood Woes? Women who believe they have a lot of hot flashes during the night may be more likely to experience mild depression during menopause, a new study suggests. The study included 29 healthy, premenopausal women, aged 18 to 45, who were given a drug to reduce estrogen levels & mimic menopause for four weeks. Those who believed they had frequent

nighttime hot flashes were more likely to develop mild symptoms of depression than those who thought they had few or no nighttime hot flashes. But the actual number of hot flashes was not linked with mood changes. Sleep interruptions were also associated with a higher risk of depression symptoms. Daytime hot flashes had no effect on mood, according to the study published online Sept. 28 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. "When women were awake long enough to later recall nighttime hot flashes, that perception contributed to mood disturbance in women whose estrogen levels had fallen," said first author Dr. Hadine Joffe. She is director of research development in psychiatry at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. Only an association was seen between perceptions of hot flashes & mood in the study. "The results of our research suggest menopausal women who report experiencing nighttime hot flashes & sleep disruption should be screened for mood disturbances," Joffe said in a journal news release. "Any treatment of mood symptoms in this population also should incorporate efforts to address sleep & nighttime hot flashes."

Trinity’s Holy Communion Questions Why do we, Trinity, offer the Lord ’s Supper every service? The first reference to the frequency of the Lord's Supper occurs in Acts 20:7: On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread…. We follow this practice of the early Christians. The times we do not offer communion are during the midweek services using the Matins and Vespers. Why are we requested to not stack the communion cups? Consecrated wine requires proper disposal by pouring it onto the ground. The residue left in the individual cups needs to be treated with the same respect. The altar guild volunteers rinse the cups before disposing of them and the wine water is then poured onto the ground. Stacked cups stick together and this lengthens the time it takes to separate, rinse and dispose of. Why do we have the little squares for communion bread? One of our dedicated Altar Guild members had a recipe for communion bread and offered to make it to supplement our own supply to help cut expenses. The process has gone through trial and error to get it just right but she is glad to be able to use God’s gift given to her.

Tidings from Taiwan

Hello!

Strange to think that this is my last newsletter being sent out from Taiwan! God has blessed these past six years in so many ways. I

am thankful for the people I have met and the lessons I have learned. After calling Taiwan home for so long, it’s strange to think that

I won’t be returning at the end of July. However, I am also excited to see what God has planned for the next chapter in my journey.

Rainy season has started up, and it’s been a bit of a strange one this year. First of all, it showed up late. Several places in Taiwan

have been worried about the lack of water. However, once it decided to arrive, it showed up with gusto. Usually during rainy season,

half the day it will rain and the other half will be sunny. This year, most of the days that it decides to rain, it just rains buckets all day.

If you plan to leave your house, you’ll probably get wet, and there’s no way around it.

It’s been a busy month! As the school year winds down, grades and comments need to be turned in so that report cards can be

handed out. One of the team members got married over the past weekend. This week we had the last O.S.F. and Friday Night Bible

Study of the semester. And the next couple weeks will continue to be a whirlwind of various activities along with the current school

year coming to a close.

Peace, Amanda

Baking – Bringing People Together

I’ve had the opportunity for a couple of different baking

adventures since my last newsletter.

Over the long weekend for Dragon Boat Festival, the pastor’s

wife (Ruth) and their daughter (Helen) met up with me at the

Practice Hotel to try some gluten-free baking. Most houses in

Taiwan don’t have ovens (except for toaster ovens), but the PH

does, which is why we chose to meet there. We were baking

gluten-free, and made two different types of bar cookies: peanut

butter, and butterscotch. Helen shared the peanut butter bars

with her classmates, and they were a big hit!

Then, two weeks ago, in O.S.F. we had our final kitchen field trip

of the year. We made outrageous peanut butter M&M cookies. It

was a smaller group of students this time, which had its perks.

We were all able to gather around one table while mixing up the

dough. I helped the two groups of boys, while Hannah led the

girls’ group. All in all, it was a success! The students even had

cookies to take back to their dorms and share with friends.

Endings

This past week, we had both the last O.S.F. and the last Friday Night Bible Study of the semester.

For the six years that I’ve been here, the final O.S.F. of the year is always comprised of eating ice

cream, looking back at pictures from the year’s events, and socializing. Hannah kicked the evening off

with a game of mannequin charades, and then it was pictures, ice cream and socializing. The

students knew that this was my last O.S.F. as I’ll be leaving Taiwan at the end of the school year.

Saying good-bye is never easy. One of the boys came over to talk to me. “God brought you to Taiwan.

You brought much joy to many students. … God will bless your new work,” he assured me.

It was my turn to play piano for the last Friday Night Bible Study of the semester. Mark was in town, so

he joined me on guitar. It was reminiscent of my first four years in Taiwan, when we’d lead song time

together. I was also teaching on Friday. The story was Stephen; however, since many of the kids that

come are a lot younger, although we talked about Stephen, we focused on David fighting Goliath. We

talked about how both Stephen and David needed courage, and how both men knew that God was

with them and that God was the source of their courage. God is with us too!

Praise and Prayers: - Thanksgiving for the much

needed rain.

- Thanksgiving as we welcome

Sunny into God’s family!

- Thanksgiving for another

school year and the students

and lessons it has brought with

it. And also thanksgiving for

my time here in Taiwan over

the past six years.

- Pray that God would continue

working in the hearts of my

students to encourage them and

bring them closer to Him

- Pray that God would continue

to send more missionaries to

serve here in Taiwan.

- We know that there are at

least two new missionary/

teachers coming to serve here

in Taiwan next year. We are

thankful for them! Please pray

that God would bless their time

of preparation and transition.

“Rejoice evermore”

Found: Sunny’s Baptism

Tanner (now a college student) and his younger sister Sunny (a senior high

school student) have been attending Friday Night Bible Study since I’ve been

in Taiwan. I was here when Tanner was baptized, and this morning at

church we had the privilege of celebrating Sunny’s baptism!

At the end of the baptismal service bulletin was Sunny’s testimony, in both

Chinese and English. She started by saying, “I thank God for brining me to

this church since I was young.” Many churches in Taiwan offer Saturday

school programs for the neighborhood kids; and Salvation is no different. As

she got older, she also started coming to Friday Night Bible Study and,

eventually, church on Sunday morning. She concluded her testimony by

writing, “Since I was brought to this church as a kid until now, there are

periods of time I did not come to the church activities. But now, the love of

God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit are bringing me back to the church.

I am starting to realize the greatness of His love, which willingly brings me

back, even though I was gone astray.”
