Port Nelson becomes a sponsor
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson is delighted to have
Port Nelson on board as a silver sponsor. BBBS Nelson
Programme Director Rachel Rae says the organisation is
looking forward to building a strong relationship with
Port Nelson and is pleased to see businesses such as
Port Nelson wanting to make a difference in the lives of
young people. Port Nelson's sponsorship took effect on
July 1 and it says it believes the youth mentoring
programme is a fantastic cause to support.
Mentors recognised at Trustpower awards
Our mentors received a big bouquet from Trustpower in
their recent community awards, with mentors'
contribution to the community being described as
``amazing''. Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson was the
runner-up in the child and youth category in the regional
awards and received a lovely certificate and $250. You
can see pictures from the awards night on Trustpower’s
Facebook page.

Rachel Rae
Programme Director
The year is whizzing by extremely quickly for us all here
in the BBBS Nelson office! It has been a busy year so far,
with many staff changes. We really appreciate your
patience and understanding regarding the challenges
this has placed on us all. Hopefully we will remain stable
for the foreseeable future!
We have now formally farewelled Rob from his
temporary role as a mentoring co-ordinator. I would like
to acknowledge the fantastic job he did in supporting
the programme during this time.
We have also welcomed Hannah Soper to the team as
our new mentoring co-ordinator. She will work 4 days a
week (not Mondays) and is already coming to grips with
the job! This takes us near the level of hours we had at
the beginning of the year. We are nearly at capacity and
will be once Hannah has the job sussed and done all the
training required.
We are also busy fundraising so that we can provide
support for the ever-growing waiting list we have. It is
wonderful to be part of such a worthwhile, preventative
programme and see the difference we can make in our
community. Our volunteer mentors are amazingly
generous people, who give freely of their time.
At the same time we have launched a new fundraising
venture, payroll giving, through which people donate
via automatic payments from their pay. The tax rebate
on their donation is then given back to them at the time
they donate. A number of people have taken up payroll
giving and if you think this could be for you, or you
know of any person or organisation who may be
interested in supporting us in this way, please contact
me.
With the very successful launch of our Friends of BBBS
group, kindly hosted by SBS, we are developing a group
of interested people who are happy to help with
fundraising events in one way or another auction.
Introducing Hannah,
our new mentoring
co-ordinator
Hannah Soper recently started as our new
mentoring co-ordinator, which means our
team of staff is complete again.
Hannah was born and raised in Wellington
but moved to Nelson with her partner four
years ago. She worked as a hairdresser for
10 years, before deciding to retrain as a
social worker. She has had experience in
alternative education, community/social
development, caregiver training and youth
justice.
Hannah says she has a passion for ensuring
the best outcomes for young people and
their families and appreciates the role
mentors play in this. She's looking forward
to meeting mentors and sharing some of
the positive life-changing experiences that
make BBBS Nelson so special.
