Right: From left to right: Dave Torro (Colton City Council Member), Vince Yzaguirre (Colton City Council Member), Josie Gonzales (San Bernardino County Supervisor) By Ethel MartinMiller | Publisher YWCN July 18, 2011 Colton, California A “Blue Mass Ceremony” was held at San Salvador Catholic Church. Father Ed Gomez delivered an inspirational message to all who attended. His message was directed to LawEnforcement Officers, Firefighter, Military Personnel and all public Safety Workers. Father Gomez brought attention to the danger that our public safety personnel face on a daily basis to protect people that they do not know personally. He also explained to all in attendance how angels are with our public safety personnel as they are working to protect the people. The message to the public safety personnel, he reminded them that their service is to the people and for them to always remember to stay humble. Many scriptures were read and explained for all to understand. Upon, completing his message he invited all of the public safety personnel to come to the front and asked them to hold out their badges as he prayed over them. He blessed the symbol of the officers, he blessed the badges that mean so much to them and to the entire community. Many in attendance also held up their hands toward the public safety personnel. Community residents as well as community leaders attended to be a part of the Blue Mass Ceremony. The atmosphere was filled with prayer, singing and inspirational music. Over 150 were in attendance and were proud as well as honored to be a part of this ceremony. The National Latino Peace Officers Association for San Bernardino and Riverside County as well as Frank Montes, owner of Inland Body & Paint Center located in Fontana were organizers of the “Blue Mass Ceremony”. They informed us that this was the first time such a ceremony had been held in the city of Colton, California. It was also a memorial for Mayor David Zamora, who died the week prior, after suffering a heart attack while driving. Mayor David Zamora was scheduled to speak at the “Blue Mass Ceremony. Frank Montes, a friend of Mayor Zamora was asked to speak and he spoke from his heart about his dear friend Mayor David Zamora and his involvement with The Blue Mass Ceremony. Yes We Can Newspaper will keep Mayor David Zamora’s family and other families whom have lost their love ones in the line of duty in our prayers. We will also keep all Law Enforcement Officers, Firefighter, Military Personnel and Public Safety Workers in our prayers and ask that the communities as a whole join in with us. By Jim Hague | [email protected] success of a website is measuredin two ways: (1) by the number ofvisitors entering the site (2) theconversions such as sales, phone calls, and people joining your newsletter. While it’s one thing to drive traffic to awebsite, it’s a bigger challenge to haveyour visitors coming back. Businesseswho consistently communicate withtheir visitors enjoy a successfulInternet presence.

The secret to retaining andmaintaining visitors is communicationby way of email. Mass emailing is themost effective method of marketing onthe Internet because it can drive trafficto your website; retain those whoalready visited the site, thus increasingthe chance of conversion. Methods of CollectionHave your webmaster create a form forvisitors to enter their name and email. The form should be placed on a highlyvisible section of the website, perhapsthe top right corner of the homepage.Add verbiage that encourages yourvisitors to add their information such

as, ’Join Our Email List’, ‘Enter nowand Win’, ‘Let Us Keep You Informed’.Then we face the challenge ofcollecting names and emails. The hardway is to drive traffic to your site bystandard marketing techniques. Onesuch is search engines. Other ways isradio, tv, or other forms of printadvertisement. These methods, whileeffective, can be costly, impersonal, and it does not guarantee that visitorswill join the list. The best way and most affordable wayto add to your database is simple facetoface networking.Regardless of the advances oftechnology we still like the humantouch of good conversation and ahandshake. Once you’ve exchangedbusiness cards ask the prospect if it’sokay to add their name to your emaillist. The newly added person will mostlikely want to hear from you and whatyou have to offer.Designing the Email1. Keep all emails short and simple. An email already the size of this articlewill lose interest. Sending an emailwith too much text causes the reader

to see in blocks. They don’t see words.Depending on their mood, they willnot likely want to read. My suggestionis to keep it under 200 words andoffer a link to your website where youcan provide more detailedinformation.2. Explain why the recipient is gettingan email and how their emai wasobtained:This is an unwritten rule but manymass email providers require it. At theend of the email add a simple linesuch as “You received this emailbecause you opted into our list via ourwebsite” or “You received this emailbecause we met at a networkingevent.” This way the recipient doesnot feel solicited.3. Add your contact infoAny business or individual sendingmass emails must disclose theiraddress, phone number, and website. Its’ the law!Find a Good Mass Email ServiceProviderIn order to send out mass email, youneed to use the services of an emailprovider. Be cognizant of the rules. Many service providers will not let you

send out large number of emails forthe sake of it. They can lose their

business license! Understand whattheir regulations are before utilizingany service.Constant Contact is a popular serviceprovider. So is iContact. Both are usedby millions. They offer templates, designs, andgood customer service.

CrystalDI also offers affordable mass

email services. Go tohttp://www.crystaldi.com/internet/em_massemail01.html or call us at(323)2012184 Now go talk to yourcontact list…they are waiting to hearfrom you!

By Gary MartinGoogle, Inc. has released aninvitation only version of their newsocial platform called Google+. Thisnew entry into the social arena hasbeen met with much fanfare. As youmay recall Google’s first iteration oftheir social platform Google Buzzbombed due to consumer privacyconcerns and consumer accountinformation being searchable on theInternet. This time Google has come up withsomething unique. Instead of tryingto mimic Facebook or Twitter, theyhave integrated what people love mostabout communicating with people inreal life. You don’t have to telleveryone everything! One of the mostdesirable features of this new platformis that you can group your contacts inwhat they call Circles.Circles are were you put the contactsthat you want to connect with. When

you initially setup Google+ they havetaken the liberty of giving you fourcirclesFriends, Family, Acquaintancesand Following. You can add morecircles if needed. The reason thisfeature is so attractive is that you canshare content with only the circle youchoose and not every person that youhave ever made contact with.If you are familiar with Facebook youhave a stream which is all of thecontent that your friends or familyhave shared with you. In Google+ notonly do you have a stream, you havethe ability to view your stream by yourcircles and keep up with who you wantto keep up with.Being an early adopter of Googleproducts I have a lot of Googleservices that I use and love theintegration that they have made withsharing photos and videos. If you area current Picasa user you will like theway that they have given you theability to share photos that you have

on your existing Picasa account. Ifyou are not a Picasa user you will beone once you set up your Google+account. For Android users they havemade it easier for you to store yourphotos by uploading all of the photosthat you take to your Picasa accountand if you choose to share them youcan. If you do not want to share yourphotos you do not have to. Google,Inc. has been very careful of placingeasily set privacy settings on Google+,since the Google Buzz fiasco.Another cool feature that they haveintegrated to Google+ is the Hangoutfeature where if you have an AndroidPhone or a Desktop Webcam you andyour friends can communicate all atonce via the web. All in all it seemslike Google+ is on the right track tohaving a solid social platform and Iwould recommend checking it out.Ask around and I bet you can get aninvite from someone get creative ifyou have to.

By Marcelle BaberLancaster, CA. – Southern California isknown to be a hotbed for talent when it comes togirls youth softball and it was evident this pastweekend. Young lady’s came from cities far and nearto Big 8 field in Lancaster, CA. to compete in a 19team, double elimination tournament with the topfour finishers qualifying for the Regional in SanDiego next month. The atmosphere was electric. It was a test of will, skill and heart onthe field and Rialto passed with flying colors. Afterwinning 3 of the first 4 games they played, losing toEl Rio (Oxnard) respectively, faced UC Del Sol (SanDiego) with the winner qualifying for the Regionaland the loser being eliminated from the tournament. With their backs against the wall, Rialto played theirbest team game of the tournament, earning athrilling 1110 victory to secure a spot in theRegional. The game was a back and forth affair with

neither team willing to concede the victory to the other.Rialto would take the lead only to see UC Del Sol comeback in their half of the inning. In the end, Rialto withstrong pitching and defense were able to hold on for thewin. Rialto was eliminated after losing to Buena Park inthe following game 106, but their ticket to the Regionalhad already been punched. It was a grueling 3 day tournament with Rialto playing6 games in a 3 day time span. All the girls handledthemselves very well under the intense pressure andshowed why Rialto is a place to be recognized as a havenfor talent, when it comes to Girls softball. “I’m very proudof the way the girls performed and we are lookingforward to Regional”. Said; Coach Nedra Berry. All ofRialto should be proud to have these young ladiesrepresenting their city. Congratulations to all of theyoung ladies and all the coaches and parents who supportour youth programs. Good luck on your next journey.

By Joe EspanaThere are, of course, manydefinitions of engagement in the worldof human resources and business. Ourown view is that engagement can bedefined as:"Working in a trusting climate inwhich individuals experience a senseof being valued, a desire to be here, feel motivated to give the best ofthemselves, participate and takeownership for their own and theteam's success, and consequently feelpride in their organisation and itswork."

Researchers say that engagement canbe most observed in the workplacefrom three angles:The energy angle: This has to dowith how much energy someone putsinto their actual work and day to dayroutines. The focus angle: This has to do withattention and concentration. Howmuch someone is focused at work, while they are at work – rather thandoing their shopping list in their heador thinking about arranging their nextholiday. And the emotional angle: This has todo with how they feel at work. How

much dedication for and connectionwith what they do day to day, thepeople they work with, and theorganisation itself. This last angle is a really importantone from our point of view. We thinkthere are three foundations stones onwhich all employee engagement getsbuilt. These are: Trust, Climate andEmotion. From our own research and workingreal time with clients on the subject,we believe there are at least six keyelements relating to employeeengagement. One important element is thatemployee engagement is aboutconnection. Experts say thatconnection is key.Engagement is about having adeep connection between whatwe do and who we are. This istrue about most things in lifebecause we will tend to putmore of our heart and soul intothose things we care mostabout. It's like having a hobbyor interest that we arepassionate about. When wedisconnect, we disengage withthe subject or activity.Employeeengagement at work is aboutenabling people to feelconnected in meaningful andauthentic ways with their rolesand responsibilities, theircolleagues and what theorganisation is trying to deliverto its chosen customers. It'sabout having a belief in andpassion for what we aretrying to do together. And ofcourse this state ofengagement is observablethrough behaviour.Anotherimportant element is thatemployee engagement isvariable, not an absolute.Employees aren't eitherengaged or disengaged.Several studies have shownthat approximately31% of employees are"actively engaged," as I'vedescribed above52% are "neither fullyengaged or fully disengaged,"just sort of neutral, and17% are "activelydisengaged", that is activelyfocusing on other things while

at work. The truth is that we can't expecteveryone to sustain high levels ofengagement all of the time. Frequency, amount and conditions are all factors,so when leaders reflect on the level ofengagement they perceive in theirwork group they need to askthemselves several questions: Howengaged do people really feel? Howoften do they feel fully engaged, andunder what circumstances do they feelthat way? This leads me to another significantelement in employee engagement.Because it's a variable this challengesthe annual engagement survey thatorganisations employ. I'm not sayingthat the information it produces is notuseful – of course it is. But we knowthat large surveys are usually too bigand not frequent enough to give us anaccurate picture. In the intervalbetween annual surveys, individualsmay have swung through differentlevels of engagement at any giventime. We would argue that employeeengagement really has to betemperature checked often so that ateam leader can adjust what she or hedoes in order to sustain high levels ofengagement in the team.Ownership is another veryimportant element of employeeengagement. The individual is theonly person who can say whether theyfeel engaged or not. No one can havegreater ownership about how I feelabout what I do, than me. This is soimportant to my psychological andemotional wellbeing at work, that Ican't wait for management to Dosomething about my engagement. Ihave to take the first step. The troubleis that in many organisational settingemployees are waiting for managers toengage them, often with theunintentional consequence of creatinga ‘moaning climate' when they aredisappointed. The only caveat here is that peopleneed to feel they are working in aculture and climate that enables themto take ownership for theirengagement; enables them to considerand reflect on it, and, with theircolleagues, enables them to connect inthe way that I have described above. We also believe that another keyelement is that employee engagementis fundamentally about relationships.A recent study showed that 97% ofrespondents cared very much about

their relationships with workcolleagues. We believe that ifemployee engagement is about how Ifeel about being here, then mycolleagues and my boss, the natureand quality of my relationships withthem and other people – perhapsdepartments across the organisation is going to be critical. To what extentdo I get what I need at a personal levelfrom my immediate boss and my workcolleagues? What kind of trustingrelationships do I have and what is thenature of the work climate thoserelationships foster?Another important aspect ofemployee engagement is that thecombination of these elements mustproduce something meaningful forpeople. In other words organisationsdon't chase the holy grail of employeeengagement just because it's a goodidea in itself. Organisations put a lotof effort into creating highly engagedworkplaces because people give thebest of themselves in thesecircumstances. When people work inopen, trusting environments in whichthey enjoy working, they connect withtheir job beyond the day to day tasksand more with the mission and visionof the organisation. As a consequencethey feel pride in what they do andlook forward to giving of their best. This is so important. After all when isthe last time you heard someone say"I'm glad it's Monday", rather than "Ican't wait for it to be Friday." Thispride in something more meaningfulthan just the day to day tasks leads tomore discretionary effort, with all thebusiness benefits that produces. So, as you can see, employeeengagement is complex. Like cogs in agiant machine, there are a number ofelements that must exist, workingtogether to create a high performance, highly engaged workplace. Ourresearch points to a number of keyindicators of employee engagementthat exists at that fundamentaloperating unit I talked about earlier –the team. Here, I have outlined our thoughtson the six key elements of employeeengagement that leaders should belooking out for. Our next question is,what can leaders actually do aboutthose key indicators to help fosteremployee engagement? But perhaps that's a subject for nexttime.

By Michael TaplinYears ago in Australia I worked as aconsultant trainer for a great troubleshooter to sort out theunderperforming Australian end of amajor consumer electronics marketingoperation. I worked with them forthree years, twice a year, traveling thecountry, 4 states, doing their salestraining.

The first trip was easy, basictechniques stuff, and it is still beingtaught today. What should I dosecond, and third and fourth timearound? The things I discovered willprobably work for you today.Trick 1: Get the customer to tell youwhat he wants from you.I decided to ask a customer. I rang thebest consumer goods retailer inAustralia; this guy is a living legend."How many sales reps deal with youprofessionally?""None! I've never met one." was theblunt answer."Would you invest an hour telling agroup of sales reps how they should dobusiness with you?"

"Yes." was his immediate answer and Ivisited him to set it up.In due course he arrived and wasushered into my training room. Thetrainees were impressed and slightlyterrified about having to meet, andlisten to the great man.He spent an hour berating them aboutall the mistakes sales reps make andI'm sure the list has not changed. Asmall sample:

Treating him like a consumer..Total product feature focus we'vegot an x and a y and a z and its great. No understanding of the most basicquestion; "How does this guy make abuck out of selling my product?"No interest in my business. No idea how I set up a productrange, and the position of his brand inmy retail strategy. He spent the second hour tellingthem how to sell to him. It was theeasiest sales training session I ever"ran".They were a sorry, bedraggled, miserable lot when he finished, so hegave them a consolation prize in theform of the biggest single order thatoffice had ever received. Beer all roundthat afternoon? You bet.

The strategy was still working twoyears later. So if you are selling toretailers, try it. It's free, and customerscan't resist the chance to tell sales repswhat they are getting wrong. You can do this yourself, and Isuggest you should. It's a great way tobuild customer relationships. I bet youwill get an increase in sales. You mayneed to adapt the approach to yourbusiness. If you are a retailer, why not get adisgruntled customer to come in andtell your people what went wrong, andwhat the customer really wanted. Youmay need to give them a gift, but if youconsider the extra sales you will make, that's cheap training. In a hospitality business, you can getthe customers on your side by givingthem an opportunity to explain to yourstaff how they feel when they areconfronted by a can't do system orattitude.Trick 2: A day in the field is worththree behind the desk. The easy way to find out what yoursales people really need to learn is tospend a day in the field with them. When I did it I would make sure thatI was introduced as the new boy, newto the business and just learning tofind my way around. I would say verylittle, only hello and goodbye. I wouldlisten and watch and make my mentalnotes.

The hardest part was to resist takingover and making the sale myself. When we left for the next call, I wouldask the salesperson the "why"questions. When she said that, what was shereally looking for? What did you say? Why? What happened next? Why did he say no?This kerbside conference workedbest when I teased out the things thatcould have been done differently orbetter.A day in the field gave me renewedinsight into the behaviour of salespeople, their doubts, fears andblindness to opportunity andcustomers' buying signals. I hadenough material to work on for two orthree days of real training. And mycredibility rose because it was all real, their world, and I could do it, not justteach it.The bonus was that the discipline oflistening showed me what thecustomers really wanted.Trick 3 Selfimage countsIf you work with a sales team for anextended period, you will see that asalesperson's self image is reflected intheir personal presentation. As theirpersonal presentation improve so willtheir results.I mentored a talented salesman overa period of two years. At the start, hewas really rough uncut diamond.

Slightly scruffy, shoes not polished, jacket and slacks, tie not well tied andslightly out of date. His speech wassloppy, with excessive use of jargon, and poor question asking skills. Hewas too matey with some customers, and ill at ease with others. He lookedas unprofessional as he behaved. Buthe could sell.Gradually I saw his appearancechange. He invested in a good suitwith ties and shoes to match. He hadregular haircuts. He changed hisspeech dropping the slang words. Asthe selfimage he projected improved, his customers treated him with greaterrespect. They sought his opinion andresponded to his suggestions. Hissales improved. He worked hard tounderstand their business and madesuggestions as to how they couldrange his product to achieve higherprofits. The last time I saw him he lookedgood, sounded great and was steppingup the sales management ladder reallyquickly. It was not about sales skills;he had those. It was all about selfimage and self confidence. The moralof this story is that anything you cando to build a person's self confidencewill pay off in sales. Here's hoping youfind these ideas useful, and can workout a way of putting them into practicein your business.

WCNThere are generally three types of

people looking for jobs—newgraduates beginning their careers, individuals who have lost their jobs, and jobholders who are looking fornew postings. The days when a jobmeant a lifetime commitment are longgone, and nowadays, people are notjust changing jobs, they are alsoswitching professions. Whatever thereason, anyone interested in finding ajob has essentially three avenuesavailable:1. Scanning the newspapers for jobadvertisements2. Registering on a job board andapplying against the job ads3. Networking with hiringmanagers/employees of possibleemployers

The first option is commonly used asa backup method because ads for jobsthat suit a person's skills andrequirements can be few and farbetween. Trying to find jobs usingstrictly newspapers or jobadvertisements is likely to take a longtime, if they result in anything at all.Let us consider the second option, jobboards. In spite of the huge increase inInternet and Internetbased job portals, and the growing number of peoplesubscribing to job portals, manyrecruiters may have the erroneousimpression that the majority ofapplicants using this method areundesirable, unpromotable andunemployed candidates, or chronicjobhoppers. This makes personalnetworking and word of mouth thepreferred hiring method fororganizations, especially when itcomes to hiring Clevel executives.

However, the third option, personalnetworking, ensures a very transparentmethod of recruiting that suits bothparties. Yet successful networkingrequires good networking skills. What are good networking skills?Networking skills are the art ofconnecting, socializing or interactingwith your immediate peers, colleagues, fellow industry professionals and thelike. Social networking has created

new ways to communicate and shareinformation. Networking can also entailfinding investors, getting new salesleads, learning something new aboutthe business from a third party, conducting business roundtablegroups with industry associations, talking to competitors and suppliers, and even going beyond the industry totalk with thought leaders in otherareas. However, good networkinginvolves more than justconnecting—like any relationship, itrequires continuous nurturing andregular contact.

Social networking has become ahighly popular worldwide phenomenonwith some big brands like MySpace,Facebook and LinkedIn boastingmillions of dedicated users. When itcomes to hiring, however, personalcontacts still tend to deliver moremotivated applicants who are morelikely to complete the applicationprocess. Despite the fact that socialnetworking is so huge, there is asingular lack of awareness about howto network in a suitable manner withrespect to one's profession/business.This comes from the obvious dangersof networking with unfamiliar people

and hence, people apply a cautionarystance. But networking online, if notdone properly and with caution, willoften lead you to the wrong endresults. Hence, it is very important tojoin the right kind of networking groupsor websites.

Because social networking is alargely youthrelated phenomenon, it isa widely leveraged tool for youthentering the job market. However, according to a recent study, one of themajor drawbacks facing the use ofpersonal networking is the lack ofbasic communication skills. This leadsto a lack of the necessary soft skillsand prevents the very constructivemechanism of twoway communicationthat is crucial in networking. However,at the end of the day, it is the jobseeker who must realize that in today'scompetitive environment, merelygraduating from college does notensure being offered a job. Graduatesmust actively seek means ofdeveloping skills, networking and beingvisible within a community of influence.

More than 30 percent of theemployees being hired in privateorganizations come through employee

referrals—the highest from any oneparticular source. Other things beingequal, employers refer referrals toother means of hiring because it givesthem the opportunity to invest in, andbenefit from, their employee's personalrelationships. Information that isunstructured, sensitive and difficult tobroadcast, which both the employersand the job seekers usually seek, isbest exchanged through personalnetworks. Studies have shown that thepositive effects of employee referralson hiring chances have enhanced therole of networking in the hiringprocess. In the last decade, popularInternet networking sites have pouredinto the recruitment space and areused by RPO companies. These nichenetworking websites help companiesleverage the networks of theiremployees; they also help companiesunearth passive candidates. Thenetworking sites are a good medium tofind contacts from your current andprior employers, clients, vendors andschools.

Hiring generally starts with anemployer reaching out to potentialemployees. Personal networking playsa key role in attracting people who

otherwise would not have applied. Thetendency of personal contacts toattract qualified candidates iscontingent on a reputation factor. When a referrer is known by theemployer, the candidate is usually agood match, as the referrer is puttinghis/her own reputation at risk torecommend the candidate. One of the major mistakes committedwhen networking is not acting on thenetwork. The network is always liveand better if most of its participantscontribute regularly. The very essenceor success of a social networkinginitiative lies in its members'networking ability, which leads tonewer/better initiatives and thoughtprocesses. While it is easy to get, and objectivelyverify, low bandwidth information suchas education, credentials and salariesusing job portals and other processoriented methods, high bandwidthinformation, which includes personaltraits and motivation, are difficult toobjectively verify. Personal networkingbrings an employer closer to this highbandwidth information.Although hiring through personalnetworks has some shortcomings, oneof them being the ability of the hiringdecisionmakers to be influenced bythe candidate, selfempowerment andimproved social cohesion within a firmare two of the top reasons managersprefer referred candidates.Companies are constantly battling inthe war for talent and looking atemployable skills. A comprehensivetalent management strategy isessential in retaining your staff. Part ofthis is well structure performancemanagement. In the absence of aprocess and system where it is easy tobroadcast information that isunstructured and sensitive, where it isdifficult to objectively validate highbandwidth information regarding anapplicant, networking will continue toplay an important role, both for jobseekers and employers. Like the oldsaying, better the devil you know thanthe devil you don't.

Luke 4:18

TTHHEE WWOORRDDBy Mavis McKnight, M.S.

Most of us have a lot of relationshipexperience, whether we know it or not. I amnot speaking only of personal intimate ormarriage relationships but also family andparent/child relationships, work, career, and business relationships, student teacherrelationships, and friend relationships. However, no matter what type ofrelationship you are in, how you handle it isa great marker as to whether therelationship will be a bad one or a great one.The difference: Bad relationships causeheartaches and distress; great relationshipsare abundant in harmony and unity.Great relationships do not just happen; ittakes plenty of time, effort, patience, andenergy. Even though all types ofrelationships have their ups and downs, good and bad times, highs and lows, happyand sad times, and failures and triumphs, there are key elements that can help you tomanage them so that each person canreceive the highest benefits. This will allowyou to bring out the best in yourselves andyour relationships. All great relationships carry commonelements, and below I have listed Nine (9)Key Elements for you to utilize whenstriving to create and maintain the bestpossible relationships.NINE (9) KEY ELEMENTS TO GREATRELATIONSHIPSRespectRespect is to show care, concern, andconsideration for. It is important that yourespect whoever you are in relationshipwith; their views, values, beliefs, andboundaries. Be mindful not to criticize orput them down. Everyone is different andsees things from their own perspective. Ifthe person you are in relationship with doesnot agree with your views, that doesn’tmean you have a right to disrespect them.Put yourself in the other person’s shoes.Would you want to be respected? Giverespect.HonestyHonesty is telling the truth. Telling the

truth means two things: the truth aboutyourself and where you stand, your values, who you are, deal breakers; and it alsomeans telling the truth to the people you’rein relationships with about themselves. There’s a difference between constructivecorrection or criticism and being downrightmean, insensitive, uncaring, andintentionally hurting someone’s feelings. Beopen, real, and tactful. Being honest in thisway is an excellent trait.Releasing Unrealistic ExpectationsWhat are expectations all about? You maythink they are about accountability to youand what you think the person you are inrelationship with should be doing, butexpectations are really about selfishness.Expectations make us focus on what wewant others to bring to the relationship. I’mnot saying there are not things we shouldlook for. What I am saying is when you aremaking your lists, take into account theneed to get to know the person first andthen decide if this person can realisticallycontribute what you need, whether it’s truecompanionship, friendship, finances inbusiness, etc. The key word is realistically. For example, your child is a “C” student andyou try to force your need onto him to be an“A” student, or if your parent didn’t grow upreceiving affection you can’t expect him/herto automatically know what that means, orhow to show it.Listening/CommunicationWhen you are communicating with whoeveryou are in relationship with, it is a goodpractice to repeat back to them what youheard to make sure you heard correctly. Itmay seem redundant at first but it is veryeffective. For example, you can say inresponse “I want to be clear about what yousaid, then repeat it the way you understoodit. If it’s right great, if not, you can getclarification. This is especially important inmale/female relationships because theycommunicate completely differently. Awoman might say one thing and a manwould hear something completely different.

Now repeating back does two things: itensures you are actually listening whichdecreases the need to have a ready responseor interrupt during the conversation, and italleviates the possibility ofmisinterpretation. You have to want to get aclear understanding of what is being said. Ittakes care and patience to communicateeffectively. Being able to listen andcommunicate well are excellent skills.Best InterestBest interest is simply doing what mostbenefits the person you are in relationshipwith and showing concern for personal andprofessional outcomes and future successes.Support & EncouragementSupport and encouragement is being therefor someone and letting the person knowwhat they are doing is good. Everyone needsto be in relationships with people whosupport and encourage them. Thisstrengthens the relationship. It helps tobuild confidence in the person beingsupported and encouraged, and it gives bothpeople a sense of value. It is very beneficialto keep people around you who supportwhat you are doing. Friendships are a greatexample.CooperationCooperation is working together for acommon purpose. With this definition youhave to identify your common purpose;whether you both want to be in therelationship, be in harmony, be unified, arecommitted for the long haul, and any otherthings you may want. For example, if youagree to pay for your child to go to a privateschool in order to get a better education, your child should agree to do his part inreaching that goal. That is cooperation andboth parties receive the benefit of beinghappy.Personal ResponsibilityPersonal responsibility is all about notblaming others for the decisions you makeand also about taking responsibility for

making your life better. For example, if youargue with someone you’re in relationshipwith and get so mad that you start slammingdoors and breaking things, do not blame theother person and say “you made me do itbecause for every action there is a reaction”.Just take responsibility for the fact that youlack selfcontrol because the control is inyour hands; or if you know you need to goback to school to get a better paying job, goback to school, and do not blame the tuition, your child’s father because he won’t keepthe kids, or your sister because she won’tdrive you there every day! You have to takeresponsibility for the decisions you makeand deal with the consequences, whethergood or bad. Personal responsibility takesan extremely high amount of courage.Forgiveness/GraceForgiveness is releasing the need to punish, and grace is unmerited or undeservingfavor. Both of these take great personalstrength. There is always a lot of discussionabout forgiveness but it still seems it is oneof the hardest things for some people to do.In order to exercise forgiveness you must tryto maintain a forgiving heart. You can dothis by looking past the mistakes someonehas made and look into their soul in order tosee the person who is really inside; theperson you chose to be in relationship withbecause of something special they haveshown you.Unlike forgiveness there is not a lot ofdiscussion about grace, except when it ispertaining to God. But let me share with youa perfect example of this. About two weeksago I asked my hubby to go into the garageand find the box with our taxes from lastyear in it. He searched for four days, pullingout every box, looking at every box, tryingdiligently to find that box. On the fourth dayhe said, that box is not in the garage and ofcourse I made a face that he later told mesaid, “Men can’t do anything, I am justgoing to have to find it myself!”So I started pulling boxes down asking him,

“did you check these”, and “the box has tobe here”, adding to that a lot of gestures andantics! After a few failed attempts I wentback into the house and looked in a box thathad been in the house for about twomonths, convinced that I had thoroughlylooked for the taxes. I lifted up about threeitems that were in the box and what did Ifind? THE TAXES! I immediately wentoutside and said Sweetie. And he knew bymy tone that I had found the taxes. Iapologized profusely! I felt so bad and hejust said “don’t worry about it”, “forget it”,“it’s alright”. “I’m just glad you foundthem”. WHAT??!! I could not believe thegrace he showed me! I did not feel Ideserved it or earned it, in fact it was thetotal opposite! What I realized is it takes a lot of care, concern, patience, and love, to be able to dothat. So in order to give both forgivenessand grace we need to access our love center. We all have one. It is part of our divinenature, the God part of us. Too oftennegativity builds a covering around our lovecenter and it seems that it is not there. Butit is always there. We just have to bring itout from behind the covering and back intothe forefront. This takes true focusing andeffort but it can be done if we can takeourselves out of the equation and replace itwith the person we want to benefit from thelove, forgiveness and grace. There you have it, Nine (9) Key Elements toGreat relationships. Be sure to refer to thesekey elements often when you are striving tohave great relationships. If you are sincere, you will not have too many problemscreating and maintaining the types ofrelationships you desire. Remember mymotto: You must do something different toget something different! I sincerely wishyou relationship success!

Read Exodus 26:1530, Hebrews 10:1112The length of the Holy Place was twice the length of the Holy ofHolies. Again, like the Most Holy Place it was beautiful beyonddescription, a room of exquisite loveliness with its shining goldenwalls and furniture and embroidered entrance curtain called theDoor. The Tabernacle was the place where the Israelites were toworship and serve God but because of sin only the priests couldenter through the Door of the Tabernacle. It was here that Aaron, the High Priest, and his sons stood to minister before the Lord, for there were no seats in the Holy Place. Only Jesus Christ, ourGreat High Priest, when He finished His work of redemption, satdown at the right hand of God.

CAN YOU HANDLE THE TRUTH?SeriesBy John H. Clark, PastorNew Testament Baptist ChurchPomona, California 91766Services Sunday 10am12pmWednesday 12pm1pm Evening 7pm8pm

Read Exodus 16:1135/20:117/25:822, Numbers 17, Romans3:2325, 2 Corinthians 5: 21. Unlike man's buildings, God's planbegan with detailed specifications for a single item of furniture the heart of the sanctuary. It was called the Ark of the Covenantbecause of the solemn covenant relationship with the Children ofIsrael, the Ark containing the Ten Commandments – the eternaland moral Law.Placed before the Ark were; Aaron's Rod that budded, blossomed and fruited simultaneously and miraculously withalmonds, a resurrection sign! The golden Pot of Manna, a sign ofthe Bread of Life and a memorial of the Manna given to theIsraelites for food in the wilderness. The Ark of the Covenant was the only piece of furniture in theMost Holy Place, or Holy of Holies. Its structure was a rectangularbox made of acacia wood measuring approximately 4 x 2 x 2 feetor 120 x 60 x 60 centimeters. This box or chest was gold platedinside and out, with a crown border for the rim. The lid was madeof solid gold and called the Mercy Seat, likewise with a goldenborder. At each end and a part of the lid were two cherubim of beatengold. Their outstretched wings were positioned high above butover the Mercy Seat, the most important part of the Tabernacle. The cherubim faced each other, looking down on the Mercy Seat towhere the sacrificial blood was sprinkled by the High Priest once ayear on the Day of Atonement. The Mercy Seat was therefore notan Altar for sacrifices but a Throne where only blood wassprinkled, a foreshadowing of God's pure grace in the forgivenessof all sin by the blood of His only Son on the Cross. The Holy ofHolies was completely dark inside and it was here, between thecherubim, that the Shekinah resplendent glory of the holyPresence of the Lord appeared enthroned above the Mercy Seat. This was God's Throne, His awesome meeting place with manwhere the Lord God Almighty, the Living God communed withMoses to give all His commands to the Children of Israel. Guardedby the cherubim, the bloodstained Mercy Seat signified God'smercy between His perfect holy Law and Israel's sins of rebellionand disobedience.Placed inside the Ark were the two unbroken stone tablets of theLaw, the Ten Commandments, given to Moses and written by thefinger of God on Mount Sinai.Covered by the lid of the Mercy Seat, the Law was kept safe insidethe Ark and therefore also known as the Ark of the Testimony.Mercy Seat means a covering, Israel's sin being covered (atoned)by the blood on the Mercy Seat. Just as the whole Bible reveals theLord Jesus Christ, the Ark is a type of our Lord.

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

THE TABERNACLEExodus 26:1530 The Tabernacle proper was consisted of 2rooms; the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place at its western end.In the shape of a parallelogram. This was God's holy dwellingplace and typified Christ and His Body, the Church. Rememberthe Tabernacle or Tent of the Testimony was also called the Tentof Meeting or Tent of the Congregation; revealing God's heart'sdesire to dwell with His people.THE MOST HOLY PLACERead Leviticus 16:1–2, Hebrews 9: 67. The shrine of the MostHoly Place, containing only the Ark, and was situated at thewestern end of God's golden Tabernacle. The Holy of Holies wasscreened on 3 sides by the gold covered acacia frames. Itsremaining side and entrance was separated from the Holy Placeby a beautiful curtain called the Veil. Only the High Priest couldenter the Most Holy Place and only once a year on the Day ofAtonement, the Ark being screened from view in a cloud ofsmoking incense. Because of the sins of the Israelites and his ownsin, the High Priest could never enter the Holy of Holies withoutsacrificial blood. This foreshadowed Christ's sacrifice on the crossand God's New Covenant of access into His presence by faith.

THE VEILRead Exodus 26:3133, Mark 15:3738, Hebrews 10:1922, 2Corinthians 3:16. This was the dividing curtain that separated theMost Holy Place from the Holy Place. The Veil separated God'sholy and righteous presence from man's unrighteousness. Thiscurtain was made of fine twined linen hung by gold hookssupported on 4 pillars of acacia overlaid with gold set into 4 silverbases or sockets. The veil was beautifully designed in white, blue, purple andscarlet colors with embroidered cherubim guarding the Holy ofHolies. The colors were significant revealing Christ – white for Hispurity, blue – His heavenly attributes, royal purple for HisKingship and red indicating the forgiveness of sins through Hissacrifice. In the time of Solomon's Temple, the Veil of separationhad become about 7 cm thick! What consternation for theministering priests when the Veil (representing Christ's Body Hisflesh) was torn completely in two from top to bottom at the timethe Crucifixion! When we come to Christ by faith, it is as if we areentering through the Veil into this beautiful Place of God'sholiness.

Important Stuff It’s Good to KnowAbout ChangeBy [email protected]

Very often when people email mefor coaching, it is because they need tomake a decision which will somehowbring a change into their lives. I’vealways found it very interesting thatmany of us humans tend to viewchange as uncomfortable even whenwe can logically rationalize that thechange is most likely going to beGOOD for us! Why is that? What is itabout us that causes us to view changeas difficult or even scary? Why do somany of us remain in a situation thatwe do not love being in, primarilybecause we are hesitant to make achange? There are as many reasons for NOTchanging as there are people who arestruggling with “wanting to make achange in their lives”. What seems tobe a common thread is something Icall the Screen of Logic. There seemsto be a filter between our conscious

and subconscious minds that isresponsible for either allowingthoughts into the subconscious orkeeping them out. When we have athought that is consistent withprevious thoughts, our Screen of Logicallows the thought through to oursubconscious and the addition of thatthought reinforces our current mindset in that area. Therefore, by the timewe are adults, we’ve constructed quitea tightly woven Screen of Logic basedon all our previous thoughts! Until webecome aware of that “filter” it seemsdifficult to adopt new ideas andconcepts into our personal beliefsystem because a little nagging voiceseems to pop up from oursubconscious that tells us that a new, logical and helpful idea “couldn’t betrue” because it is not part of our subconsciousness YET!How do we break this cycle? Howdo we get NEW and HELPFULinformation THROUGH that Screen of

Logic into our subconscious? Thereare many many different techniquesbecause we are all so different that noone technique works for everyone. When someone emails me becausethey are having difficulty withchanging something in their lives, theFIRST thing I ask them to do is topretend they are a young child againwith a vivid imagination. This isideally done lying down with your eyesclosed. IMAGINE THAT YOU ARE INBED AND READY TO FALL ASLEEPFOR THE NIGHT. YOUR FAIRYGODMOTHER APPEARS OVER YOUWITH A MAGIC WAND. SHE ASKSYOU TO TELL HER HOW YOURPERFECT LIFE WOULD BEDIFFERENT IN THE MORNING “IFSHE WAVES HER MAGIC WANDOVER YOU TONIGHT”! At this pointyou must carefully consider what youREALLY WANT…consider theconsequences before you vividlyimagine your “perfect life” because

this is a very powerful technique.Athletes train MENTALLY in order toimprove their PHYSICALperformances. This is calledVisualization and this is the besttechnique for getting new ideasthrough your Screen of Logic and intoyour subconscious belief system. Thisis a technique you can enjoy everymorning before you jump out of bedand every evening before you fallasleep…imagine yourself living the lifeof your dreams. Allow those visions toslowly, over time, FEEL morePOSSIBLE! You will notice a subtledifference in your “belief” system aftera time…at first it seems stupid becausethere is “no way my life could be thatgood”…but in time, a little glimmer ofhope will creep in and BINGO…youwill suddenly realize that you’vesuccessfully CHANGED your Screen ofLogic!!!Once you have even a tiny glimmerof hope, you will find it possible to

begin to move in the direction of yourdreams. You will begin to have newideas, and because you’ve felt thatglimmer of hope you will LISTEN toyour ideas more closely and payattention to them! Those little ideasthat pop into your head are nowcoming from your SUBCONSCIOUS!Listen to them! You arereprogramming yourself to be ABLEto move in the direction of the changeyou want in your life! Sounds tooeasy? Visualize yourself living a joyfullife for a couple months and see whathappens!May the rest of your life be the best ofyour life! By Mary SmithAs we get older many of the thingsthat we took for granted when we wereyoung now take on a more significantrole in our lives. One of those things isreligion. Religionplayed an important part of my life as achild growing up in the south. Even as Iwrite this article I can recall my mothertelling me and my younger brothers toget up and getdressed for church. Her main sayingwas “If you can go out on Saturdaynight, you can get up on Sunday and goto church.” From Sunday morningworship, to Sunday school,to Vacation bible school, religiousteaching has continued to influence mylife. And while I did not always want tosubscribe to those teachings, I havefound that I could not escape theirimpact on my being. Now that I amolder, I find solace from scripturesin the bible when things are not goingwell in my life. The worship experiencealong with its message of love trust anddependence on a higher being is also

tantamount. With the anticipation of achild, I look forward to times when I amalong with other believers, unitetogether on Sunday. Religion and thereligious experience create a feeling ofbelonging.Maybe it’s because I have turned acorner in my life when being liberal andcarefree now have taken a back seat.Maybe its all part of the growing upprocess that we all experience.Whatever it is, at some point in ourlives we reach that pentacle where weneed something more than man canoffer. We realize that our days aremarked and our time is limited. Webegin to wonder what will happen to usin the end? They say with age comeswisdom, but I say with age comes agreater understanding of the ups anddowns that were part of our life. Withthat understanding we seek to regroupand apply what we have learned frommistakes made along the journey. Weare now enlighten and strengthen byreligious zeal to rely not on our ownunderstanding, but to trust and believein something higher if we want to arriveat a better place in the end.

Senior Moments A Closer WalkInland YouthJournalism & Technology Students Have Their Say

Students from as far away as Phelan are participating in this summer’s Journalism and& Technology Boot Camp offered by OneNation Media Services, a nonprofit corporationdedicated to producing and distributing socially relevant media content. The sixweekextracurricular program covers various topics related to mass communication, includingprint journalism, photography, social media, Internet safety, advertising and publicrelations. Program sponsorsand supporters include Inland Valley News, Westside Story Newspaper, Yes We CanNewspaper, Rancho Cucamonga Church of Christ, Transcendence Children & FamilyServices, Rickey Brown Photography and the Los Angeles Bureau of the Associated Press, which generously donated Associated Press Stylebooks, regarded by journalistsworldwide as the essential tool for anyone who cares about good writing.

By By Perri ScottRancho Cucamonga High SchoolIn today’s music lyrics, there is no emotionalconnection, nor anthems that really bring a unity ofpeople together from different outlooks of life. Thoughthere are some, they only have the effect for just a littlewhile until it becomes unsung. One morning as I was getting ready to go to school, Istarted to listen to a new song that had played on VH1’smusic video playlist. It was the voice of a British womanby the name of Adele who had sung one of her firstmainstream tracks titled, “Chasing Pavements”. Whenthe song had finished playing, the melody continued toreplay in my mind. While at school, I discovered thatmost of my peers felt the same way, even my AfricanAmericans friends. As the day began to end, I’d come tothe conclusion that Adele had made a hugebreakthrough with the type of fan base she’s gatheredand still gathering in just a short period of time.

That’s when I became even more interested in hermusic. I started to decode her lyrics and noticed thatmost of what she was saying was relatable to me, as wellas many other people today. It seemed to me as if shehas asked people from many walks of life about theirexperiences with loved ones or their experiences ingeneral and had put them all together in asong; piece by piece, like a puzzle where it was putentirely whole, without anything missing. My opinion of her music was finally confirmed whenher new hit single, “Rolling in the Deep” debuted. Whenit hit the air waves, it appeared everywhere fromcommercials to movie trailers to people eitherperforming it vocally or dancing to it at a talent show, even covers on YouTube. That’s when I finally realizedthat Adele was climbing her way up on Billboard’s musiccharts, being officially inducted into America’s melting pot, anddeveloping into an unforgotten icon.
