directors’ notes

o ne of our favorite quotes is “Life is short. Spend it with friends who make you laugh and feel loved.” Despite what we were told as kids, making new friends

can be hard, especially as adults. We don’t always have built-in ways to meet them like we did when we were little, and we are more settled in who we are and sometimes less likely to change to let a new person in. There are so many things that keep us apart: politics, family, fear of judgment, busy schedules, a focus on technology and achievement. We run around staring into our smart phones all day in a way that cuts out even the most happenstance of conversations and connections.

And yet, sometimes there are people that come into our lives who break down all those walls. Their humor and honesty disarm us and open us up, and suddenly, we are taking risks and having fun in ways we never saw coming. In these divided times, it’s maybe the most life-affirming thing we can do—forge real relationships. To celebrate the things that are common between all of us, and to laugh at the things that, at first glance, make us think we were different from each other.

Sit back and laugh with four new friends who couldn’t be more different, but who find out that what they most need is the adventure they can only have with each other.

She is an avid traveler and loves cooking and all things Disney. She is thankful for the support and love from her family, and for her Pentacle Theatre family.

scholarship winners

P entacle Theatre is happy to announce that Noah Camuso and Macey Trussell are the winners of the Tom Ulmer Theatre Service Scholarship. The late Tom Ulmer was a tireless creator and educator of theatrical arts at Pentacle Theatre, Children’s

Educational Theatre and in his career with the Salem-Keizer School District. Pentacle honors his memory by awarding scholarship funds to students who give extraordinary time and effort to be involved in theater in spite of the odds.

noah CamusoI am excited to kick my future off by going to University of Oregon next year. After years of thinking that I wanted to be an actor, a few months ago, my love for creative writing, theater, and writing music, steered me instead toward writing musical theater. The actual degrees I am pursuing are creative writing and music composition. Thank you so much, Pentacle Theatre!

Macey trussellI have been participating in acting and singing for 10 years. I have been in six shows at Pentacle Theatre while remaining involved in other theater opportunities in Salem. With my expe-riences in musical theater I was able to take first place at the 2017 national NATS competition for Upper High School Music Theatre Women. I have worked to be the best performing and academic student I can be, receiving salutatorian status at my high school graduation. Next year I will be attending Oklahoma City University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in music. I plan to double major in musical theater and vocal performance. At OCU, I will further my educa-tion in dance, piano, tech theater, Shakespeare, music theory, and the technical aspects of vocal performance and opera.
