ATTENDANCE POLICY

Class attendance is directly linked to success in the course.

Attendance defined…• Physically attending an on-campus course• Engaging in an academic activity in a distance education course

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

Excused AbsencesIn the event physical attendance is not possible, attendance may also be fulfilled by contacting the instructor in advance of the missed class and submitting missed work and/or other academic assignments as defined by the instructor.

Unexcused AbsencesStudent does not notify the instructor when missing class and/or does not complete make-up work/assignments as directed by the instructor.

WHAT DOES ATTENDANCE LOOK LIKE

Physically attending class Submitting an academic assignment

Taking an exam, completing an interactive tutorial, or participating in

computer-assisted instruction

Attending a study group that is assigned for the

course

Participating in an online discussion about academic

matters

Submitting a make-up assignment/activity as a

result of notifying the instructor that the student was unable to attend class

THE FOLLOWING DOES NOT COUNT AS ATTENDANCE

Simply notifying the instructor that the student is not able to able to attend does NOT qualify as attending.

Logging on to the learning management system or a tutorial (such as MyLabsPlus) without active participation does not

demonstrate attendance.

GRADING STUDENTS WHO FAIL DUE TO POOR ATTENDANCE

Mid-Terms• Communicate with students

who are not attending (Hint: Use the attendance tool in D2L for this).

• If student is failing, assign a mid-term grade of an F.

Final Grades• Did the student fail the course?

• If so, did their attendance affect their grade?

• Students who fail due to poor attendance are UNOFFICIALLY WITHDRAWN (U/ UE GRADE).

Recap• Mark attendance for at least one day.• Attendance tracking will be open for the rest of semester for

instructor use.• No need to check absence notified check box.• No need to add a mandatory note. A system note will be added

to student profile.• Registration status for the students who are marked absent will

only change when the NA window closes.
