Perfect attendance

bloomingdale elementary Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

The students and staff are off to a solid start with our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) pro-gram. Implementation began for this program a year and a half ago and we are now reaping impressive results. There was an assembly on the first day of school where new stu-dents were introduced and returning students were remind-ed how to fly with Cardinal P.R.I.D.E. (Positive, Respectful, In Control, Dependable, Effort). The students giggled and smiled as their classroom teachers acted out the expectations for each focus area in the school. The assembly ended with all students and staff joining together and singing the Car-dinal Pride chant. The next day, all students rotated through the campus to go over the P.R.I.D.E. expectations including the classroom, playground, cafeteria, hallways, computer lab, bathrooms, and buses.

Each week students are given points when they are spot-ted flying with Cardinal P.R.I.D.E. These points accumulate and can be used for rewards such as being able to print a pic-ture in the computer lab, sit in a different seat during lunch or earn extra recess time. Students brainstorm rewards with their teachers. At the end of each week, there is a random drawing for one student from each class who has earned enough points. These students get to pick a prize and have their picture taken. Another way students are recognized for their positive behavior is through a “Cardinal Point of Pride” office referral. Staff members fill out the form highlighting what the student did to deserve the recognition. These are read during the morning announcements. Each child then has the opportunity to meet with the principal for congratu-lations. Throughout the year, there will also be several whole school rewards like a dance or water party that take the effort of the whole student body to achieve. There will be much ex-citement when these rewards are finally earned!

This program is multi-tiered in both its approach and implementation. As we at Bloomingdale Elementary enter the third school year we look forward to even more ways to help students move forward in positive behavior.

Student Learning Objective (SLO)

On Friday, November 9, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students of Bloomingdale Elementary presented their annual Veterans Day program called “Remember” to a full house of enthusiastic family members, community friends, and local veterans. The program included an explanation of the “white table ceremony” which highlights military personnel who were POWs (prisoners of war) or MIA (missing in action). Students respectfully laid out each item on the table with an explanation that helped the audience remember these very special people.

Students in each grade had their moment on stage and performed patriotic songs that ranged from the very old hymn “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” to a modern song entitled “A Greater Nation”. Third grade students sang “Gratitude Attitude” during which 12 students named veterans for whom they were grateful. Fourth graders impressed the audience with their skilled use of handbells. Fifth graders sang a rousing 6 minute medley that featured choruses from each military branch. Veterans stood to appreciative applause when they heard their branch’s familiar melody.

One of the most memorable visitors this year was Mr. Otto Price (a family friend of 5th grader, Patrick Robinson), who served in the Army from 1942-1945. Not only were students impressed that he served during WWII but also that he was just a few weeks shy of his 103rd birthday. Few people in the room have ever met a person blessed with such longevity! Along with Mr. Price, were many other veterans who had served selflessly through the decades. Some of the veterans were parents and grandparents of the students on stage which made the program take on even greater meaning for all involved. It was a delightful program for the audience as well as fulfilling and rewarding for the students involved.

Pullman Elementary was one of the 57 schools that received an Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance grant submitted by J&H Oil Company. We will be receiving a $500 check to apply toward a math or science need in our school. We are very excited to receive this grant! Recently, we have been committed to aligning our science curriculum with the new Michigan science standards. This money will help with the purchase of some of the supplies that we need. Additionally, we will be purchasing nonfiction trade books to align with the science concepts that are being taught. Thank you J&H Oil Company!

Basketball donationMany of the students at Bloomingdale Elementary love

to play basketball any chance they can get. To celebrate their love of this great game, I asked my Facebook friends and family to help me with a project of getting 25 new basketballs.  I am thrilled that so many people were willing to help with this project.  Our younger students will benefit from utilizing these basketballs for developing manipulative skills such as dribbling, rolling, collecting, catching, throwing and more. Donor list: Michael Griffey, Bill Griffey, Rusty Griffey, Heather Frank, John Wilbur, Dan Whipp, Doug Kiel, Jeff Shields, Deb Zegumny, Dani Cook, Sandee Jackson.

Congratulations to teacher Mike Douglas who received a $1,500.00 Art Equipment and Supplies Grant for the 2018/2019 School Year! Bloomingdale MS/HS Received this Grant from Michigan Youth Arts! Thank You Mr. Douglas and the Michigan Youth Arts Council!

Fuel Up To Play 60This year, Mr. Visscher has put together a Fuel Up to

Play 60 team. The focus of this group is to encourage others to be physically active for 60 minutes a day. These students are very excited to be chosen to lead this initiative.

To the Moon!In January Pullman Elementary’s first ever FIRST Lego

League Jr. Team will be taking off thanks to a couple of generous donors. The team will be called Cardinal Master Builders and will meet as an after school club for about 12 weeks. The team will consist of about 6 students from 2nd and 3rd grades.

Students will first research the problem of living on a moon base as part of this year’s challenge called MISSION MOON! Using Legos and creative thinking, the team will ultimately build a model of a moon base using Legos, including basic robotic parts which they will learn to program using a Chromebook. Along with the model, students will also keep track of their ideas/learning in a journal and create a poster. Once the model and poster is complete, students will present their work at an assembly for all of their peers to see.

The challenge has been accepted and the students are ready to BLAST OFF!

Shout Out to the MS/HS Lunch Crew

Mr. Eric Meloche and the Lunch Ladies are an awesome group of professionals at Bloomingdale Middle & High School. This group deserves recognition as a team who take tremendous pride in their work. They go above and beyond every day. By that I mean, they go out of their way to make a positive difference in our students’ school day. Lunch is always a warm and welcoming place at Bloomingdale Middle & High School. Besides serving delicious and satisfying food, the students are always greeted with smiles and respect when they enter the cafeteria. After the students are all settled and eating these ladies are moving around the cafeteria talking with all of the students. The ladies are inquisitive about what is happening during the student’s school day. They make a purposeful point to get to know every student and help them in any way they can. Please and thank-you is a regular verbal exchange between the lunch crew and the students. This crew makes it easy for the students to pick up after themselves and take care of the school facilities. They even supervise outside time or gym time when weather, time, and schedule permits. This is a great release for our students and most of the students love it.

It takes a village to raise a child and our parents can be rest assured and confident that when their child(ren) go to lunch every day they are being well cared for by this crew. Thank you Mr. Meloche and the Lunch Ladies for the positive difference you make for our students at Bloomingdale Middle & High School!

Hi, my name is Lilly Livsey. I am a senior at Bloomingdale High School. I am also one of the co-captains for our Robotics Team. Coordinating our Robotics Team is also part of my senior project. Robotics is quite costly so since September I have held a few fundraisers to help us build our fund. I held a bake sale at one of our fellow senior’s color run, and my co-captain and I ran a booth at Oktoberfest to help spread the word about our team to the community. We are still looking for donations to help with any necessary costs we come across during the season. These funds would be used for things like hotels to stay in during the competitions, food and snacks, team t-shirts, funds for any necessary equipment and parts, etc. We are not only looking for monetary donations, but also if you have any experience with design, programming and coding, wiring, and any other skills you think may benefit our team, we’d love to have your support. If you are interested in volunteering or donating, please contact me at [email protected]

Donations may also be made to the main high school office or can be mailed to Bloomingdale Public Schools, PO Box 217, Bloomingdale, in care of the Robotics Team.

Veterans Day ProgramThe students at Pullman Elementary celebrated Veterans

and thanked them for their service in the annual Veteran’s Day Program on Friday, November 9, 2018. Miss Overbeek worked with students in grades K-5 to prepare songs that included the use of the boomwhackers and kazoos. We were honored with many Veterans who came to enjoy the program. In addition, we are thankful to have Sandy Anderson share some kind words regarding our Veterans.

The middle and high school teachers have been work-ing hard on creating student learning objectives which will be implemented in the second trimester of the 2018/2019 school year. A student learning objective (SLO) is a re-searched-based way to measure student growth in the class-room. Student learning objectives are recommended by the Michigan Department of Education. Another way to say it is, by using SLOs in the classroom, it provides our teachers with an objective answer and realistic gauge as to how well the students are learning the content being taught.

What criteria are the teachers looking at when they cre-ate their student learning objectives? First, the teachers need to choose what type of SLO they want to make. This means is it a class-level, course-level, targeted, or multi-course SLO. The teachers must define the time frame they are using and the students (& student characteristics) they are teaching during second trimester. The teachers need to choose which standards, data, and assessments they will be using to im-plement the SLO. Finally, the teachers need to set a growth target for their SLO. (Two examples of growth targets are; 75% of the students will increase proficiency by one level or 75% of all students will improve their scores by 10%.) Teach-ers must also provide a rationale as to why they chose the growth targets they did and how it connects to the school improvement plan. Finally, instructional strategies, progress monitoring, and interventions need to be identified which will help all students reach the set growth target.

In short, the middle and high school teachers have been working hard  learning how to create their student learning objectives and learning how to measure student growth us-ing this tool. It is always challenging to learn something new no matter who you are but every teacher met this challenge head-on and they are ready to go!

Good job and many thanks to the Bloomingdale Middle and High School Teachers for taking pride in your craft and focusing on the educational growth of our students.

Bloomingdale Elementary is excited to begin their Hand2Hand Weekend Food Bag program in January. We are appreciative of all the support we received from the Bloomingdale community during the Fill The Bus campaign in early November. Many of the shelves in our pantry were filled during the event. We are still accepting participants for the program and are very excited to start sending food home with our eligible students every Friday. Qualifying students will receive a backpack of food every weekend. Each backpack includes: a lunch item, a snack item, and a dinner item. The bags will also include an easy to follow recipe card so the student can create a nutritious meal on their own if needed. You may make a tax deferred donation to Hand2Hand by writing a check to Townline United Methodist Church. Please note Hand2Hand on the memo line. All donations directly benefit Bloomingdale Elementary. Checks can be dropped off at the school or mailed to the church at 41470 24th Ave, Bloomingdale or the school at PO Box 217, Bloomingdale. Special thanks to our community for supporting this wonderful program.

Evening EventsWe have been working hard to help our families feel

welcome at Pullman Elementary. This year, we have been holding more evening events with a focus on providing different strategies to teach parents how to better help their children with their academics as well as restorative practices to help with behavior issues at home. We have hosted Literacy Night and Math Night. In addition to supporting academics, we have been able to provide a dinner for our families each evening as well. Special thanks to all the families that have been able to come out and spend some time with the staff at Pullman Elementary learning how to best support your child’s education.

The next evening event at Pullman Elementary will be the annual Holiday Concert. Students in grades K-5 will provide a wide variety of holiday songs for your listening enjoyment. They are exceptionally talented! The Holiday Concert is Thursday, December 13 at 5:30pm in our gymnasium. There will be a dessert reception after the concert. We hope to see everyone there!

Hello Folks,

If you are reading this letter, I want to THANK YOU so very much for considering, or agreeing to be a sponsor for our local School’s Sports Page! As

the owner of the Van Buren Reminder – and the former Van Buren County Advertiser – I know from first hand experience how much this weekly information means to communities, the students and their families. We work closely with each school to make certain we are sharing the important sports information, as well as building support throughout the school system. YOUR BUSINESS makes this possible, and I hope you will accept my sincere appreciation for this support. Please expect a phone call from me to discuss the options we can offer. I look forward to speaking with you soon.

The Gobles Foundationawarded money to the middle school students to

participate in an elective where math and hands on skills are put into action through woodworking. Students

have been able to learn and demonstrate practical

measurements to complete several projects. Most of the students

have had little or no experience working with tools or problem solving in this way so it was an

exciting challenge for all of them. Careful planning and following steps toward a successful project

was also a key goal of the program. The students were

able to sell their projects and the proceeds will fund materials for

the next group of students.

Thanks to the generous support of the Gobles Foundation, over thirty elementary students had the opportunity to participate in the first Gobles Lego Club over a period of 4 weeks last May. While attending this after-school enrichment program, students worked with Mrs. Ivester and Mrs. Tregloan to complete several types of Lego projects through the use of Lego Education STEM building kits. These kits are designed to provide playful learning activities to engage students and help them develop the skills they will need for a successful future in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, and

math). During Lego Club, students were able to utilize knowledge and skills learned in their classrooms through our STEM/PLTW curriculum, and also communicate with one another to follow directions to complete projects with materials provided through the Lego Education Program. The variety of projects created by students in grades K-5th grade were outstanding, as students exhibited their engineering, coding, and teamwork abilities to create and program several types of robotic projects. The first participants of our Lego Club had a great time, and Mrs. Ivester and Mrs. Tregloan look

forward to expanding the club to more students later this year! Thanks again to the Gobles Foundation for providing this opportunity to so many students that otherwise would not have access to this type of extracurricular activity. Thanks to their financial support, the love of STEM can continue to grow throughout our Gobles community!

After receiving the “Greenscreen Engage-ment” grant from the Gobles Foundation, it has been put into practice and engaged learn-ing. I teamed up with our Elementary tech-nology teacher, Mrs. Boes, and shared ideas. Since having the materials, she has also pur-sued some extra materials and with all of the supplies, we have been able to have a room in the Elementary building designated for Green Screens. In this room, there are green screens that are up and there is storage with props and tools to create green screen videos.

During the last school year, students were filming the announcements for the whole school to watch. These announcements al-lowed for Gobles students to record the lunch choice for the day, share a fun fact or quote, and to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. This was the first thing that all elementary students saw in the morning to start their day. It gave students responsibility and input into the an-nouncements. It also allowed us to share some growth mindset quotes each morning, which is something that the elementary school is working on and learning about as a school.

Additionally, in my classroom, my stu-dents created a few projects. One of which was that students were able to make a per-sonal video for his or her grandparent for Grandparents Day. Each student wrote what they loved about his or her grandparent, they recorded it and chose the greenscreen back-ground. The videos were uploaded and then students could share with their grandpar-ents. Grandparents loved it; was a memorable keepsake that grandparents can look back on and remember their grandchildren.

The green screen is an amazing resource that is available for all teachers to use in their classrooms and it is also available to be used in technology. This funding has and will continue to help to add engagement to projects and class-rooms. It is endless and can be used for many years to come. Thank you again to The Gobles Foundation.

50 Year Reunion

The Gobles Public Schools Foundation has been in good standing for over 25 years. Many good volunteers have served and continue to serve on the Foundation Board. It serves and reports annually to the Gobles Schools Board of Education.

The Gobles Public Schools Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that was established to help promote scholastic programs for students by providing funds that are not associated with the normal operating budget of Gobles Public Schools. Since its inception, the Foundation has funded numerous programs and projects including youth leadership and fine arts camp scholarships, guest speaker appearances, school plays, senior projects, and teacher training materials. With the unstable condition of state funding for public schools, it is imperative that our Foundation continue to provide funding assistance to the individuals and organizations who seek these beneficial programs for our students.

The Gobles Public Schools Foundation is funded by the generosity of the Gobles community and Gobles Public Schools alumni. Donations are received in the form of direct donations to the Foundation, memorial contributions, endowments, or the purchase of a brick to serve as part of the recognition wall. The Foundation Board meets semi-annually to evaluate submitted grant applications and provide funding to the approved submissions. It has been the position of the Board that grant requests will be for new and innovative ideas. The one item the Foundation does pay for each year is for the registration for one high school student to attend HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership) seminar.

Thanks to the Perrigo Foundation, we received $2,000.00 for use in projects and/or materials for math and science requests. Perrigo also presents a grant of $1,000.00 to be used for scholarship(s) for student(s) pursuing a degree in a math or science field of study.

As 2018 comes to a close, please consider the Foundation in making year end tax-deductible contributions. In some cases, employers may match your charitable contributions to the Foundation. The Foundation Board encourages you to contact a member to learn how to contribute to the future success of the Foundation and those we support. Thank you for supporting the Gobles Public Schools Foundation.

The Gobles Foundation has fully funded an Elementary Math Madness Month. The program is designed to provide enrichment, maintenance and remediation support through games and hands on applications. Students will complete activities at home to boost math fact fluency as well as completing math activities during the school day. Students earn tickets for completed activities that are used to enter a raffle for a math prize. Math Madness Month begins in January after Christmas Break.
