Konya isa place of pilgrimage for Muslim’s the world overand it’s capital of selcuk has much more meaningand holds more pride to the local Turks thanany of the well known tourist resorts. Konya wasthe adopted homeplace of Mevlana (Our Master),a Sufic mystic famous for being the founder ofthe whirling dervish sect and through his writingshelped reshape Islamic thought and played a majorpart in the modifying of popular Islamic culture inTurkey. In Konya you will visit the Mausoleum ofMevlana before continuing on to Pamukkale.(B, D)

Day 6 : KusadasiPamukkale - Kusadasi. After breakfast take avisit to the Ancient Hierapolis with its magnificentNecropolis graveyard on our way to Kusadasi. The Ancient Hierapolis has a good collection ofancient Roman ruins, the Temple of Apollo and thePlutonium, dating back to third century BC althoughmany of the current ruins are built upon ruins datingback to the second century AD, although someof these earlier ruins are still visible such as theRoman theatre. Later we continue to Selcuk with avisit to the Temple of Artemis en-route before arrivalin Kusadasi. Overnight - Cappadocia (B, D)

Day 7 : Kusadasi

Kusadasi. After breakfast you will embark on a visitto Ephesus, a visit to this region is not completewithout such a visit. Besides pompeii, Ephesus isthe best preserved and largest ancient city on theMediterranean. It is also the most commonly visitedpart of Turkey after Istanbul and once you set eyesupon it you will see why. Make sure to pack plentyof water as during the hotter months Ephesus canget very warm indeed and the water vendors do notsell their wares for cheap. Best to be prepared.

After being advised by an oracle advised byindications of a fish and a wild boar, Androlocus, theson of King Kodrus (who founded Athens), Ephesuswas founded. Or so legend tells it. The indigenousCybele accepted the worship of artemis and theoriginal Ephesus of 1000 BC was built on the northfacing slope of Mount Pion. In 334 BC Alexanderthe Great visited and offered to help fund thecompletion of the shrine to Artemis but was refused. After Alexander’s death his lieutenant, Lysimachusendeavoured to move the city due to the receedingsea and built its first walls. During the romanimperial period Ephesus was declared the capitalof Asia, however over time and due to the generaldecline in the Byzantine era and the abandonementof the worship of Artemis following the introductionof Christianity, Arab raiders and the final straw, the silting of the harbour, the population began tomove elsewhere and Ephesus fell in to ruin. Todayyou will visit the remains of the library, theatre, temples and St. Mary’s House constructed betweenthe second and fourth centuries AD. This afternoonyou will have the opportunity to purchase locallymade leather products. Overnight - Kusadasi (B,D)

Day 8 : Canakkale

Kusadasi - Canakkale. An early departure forBergama this morning to visit the Acropolis. With

ancient ruins from the Altar of Zeus built byEumenes II in honour of his father’s victory overthe Gauls, to the third-century Temple of Athenaand most famously the library which gave birthto the modern book. Pergamon’s library had over200 000 titles due to the prolific and zealouscollecting by Eumenes II and later by Attalos IIcontaining volumes by Aristotle and theophratsos. The Egyptians soon got wind of this mightycollection and fearing it would overtake theirextensive collection in Alexandria the exportingof papyrus was banned. Hence the Pergamenedynasty reverted too their old method of writing ontreated animal skins. Due to it not being possibleto roll the skins like papyrus the paged book wasformed. Later we visit famous Troy, not the mostmagnificent of archaeological sites in Turkey butcertainly one of the most famous due to the writingsof Homer. Just outside the gate is a reconstructionof the famous Trojan horse used to get in the citywalls and filled with warriors waiting for nightfall tolaunch a surprise attack. You can climb a ladderinto the belly of the horse and see out over the ruinsof the city and make your own mind up whetherHomer’s Iliad is more fact or fiction. Overnight -Canakkale (B, D)

Day 9 : IstanbulCanakkale - Istanbul. After breakfast we cross theDardanelles. The famous stretch of water the Alliesfought so valiantly yet fruitlessly for during the FirstWorld War. Today you will visit the legendary AnzacCove and Gallipoli itself, the place where over 8000Australians and around 3000 New Zealanders losttheir lives in a vain attempt to take the surroundinghills and open up a supply route through to theBlack Sea. It is not completely certain how theANZAC’s made land fall where they did but themost likely reason is that the strong currents ofthe Dardanelles were not fully taken into accountcausing the ANZAC’s to land way off course. Dueto landing under the cover of darkness this was notfully realised until they were already ashore andit was too late and the awaiting Turkish machineguns opened fire. Today you will get the chanceto explore the most famous battle sites in what isconsidered to be one of the world’s best preservedbattlefields. You will get a chance to see where thebattle of the Nek, Chanuk Bair and Lone Pine tookplace, also visiting the 57th Regiment memorial andthe war museum before we travel back to Istanbul.Overnight - Istanbul (B)

Day 10 : Gulet
