2. Neoliberalism Case study: 2014 Australias Budget cuts 2 3. Neo-Liberalism Neoliberalism is a political economical theory that human well being can be best advanced by the maximisation of entrepreneurial freedom within a framework characterized by private property right, individual liberty, unencumbered markets and free trade. Outside of education, health, social security or environmental pollution the state must not intervene Neoliberalism has become a hegemonic ideology, where it has become incorporated into the way we live and understand the world. The neoliberal ideology is incorporated in the World Bank, Foreign Exchange Market and IMF 3 4. 2014 Australias budget cuts and Neoliberal influences David Harvey argues that neoliberalism failed at generating wealth for everyone but redistributes existing wealth from the poor to the rich The management and manipulating of crises is one of the most insidious factor of neoliberalism to redistribute wealth from poorer areas and move it the richer. The aim of the state is to redistribute assists from the poor to the rich. One of the main ways is via privatization and cut backs. 4 5. What is being Cut Raise the pension age to 70 and include the family home in a new means test End of Medicare as we know it by forcing rich Australians to get private health insurance without giving them the rebate, and making people pay to see a doctor or go to an emergency department, and pay more for prescriptions. Cut all funding to Holden Sell Australia Post, NBN Co, ASC and the Royal Australian Mint Force those with study debts to start paying back sooner Make uni students pay 55 per cent of their degree from 41 percent 5 6. State Redistribution State is a prime agent of distributive policies Privatization and cutbacks appear to be essential to support social wage. Privatization appears to beneficial to lower class Neoliberalism state redistributes through other ways such as revision in tax codes, displacement of state expenditures and tax breaks for big companies 6 7. 7 8. Reaction Budget Cuts in the Media 8 9. Globalisation Case Study: Nike Sweatshops 9 10. Globalization Globalization is simply the widening, deepening and speeding up of worldwide interconnectedness The increasing global interconnectedness is evident in every sphere including from economics to culture Everyday 1.88 trillion dollars flows through the foreign exchange market Transnational companies now account for 25 to 33 per cent of world output, 70 percent of world trade and 80 per cent of international investment This makes transnational companies key players in world economic and also political sphere This process of rapid Globalization has produced mixed results and an on going debate about its winners and losers. 10 11. Nike, established in 1972 by Phillip Knight Leading corporation in athletic shoes and sports-equipment An example of the globalised world: Knight realised that while lower-cost, high-quality Japanese products were taken over US appliance and electronic market. That because majority of shoe manufacturing was occurring within US and Germany with higher costs he decided to outsource to Japan However as costs in Japan increased, Nike decided to offshore its production to Korea and Taiwan. By 1982, 86% of Nikes footwear came from these two nations However, once again as Korea and Taiwan became more and more developed the labor laws changed and minimum wage laws therefore Nike urged its suppliers to re-locate to cost-effective nations. The company decided to relocate its factories to Indonesia, China, Pakistan, India and Vietnam Nike designs styles in US, in which they get in contact with large firms in Taiwan and Japan (with their suppliers), once the designs are developed into prototypes they are to be approved. The suppliers then fax product specifications with their various plants throughout Southeast Asia. Interconnectedness between economics and state (Nike and Indonesia) has impact on local and business and people Although this might from outwards appear as a success store of globalization providing jobs and opportunity to third world countries it is actually exploiting the local people The lack of adequate laws to protect the local people within these countries means that the companies are not being properly regulated. Therefore in that case they are in control in the wages, hours they work and also ensuring the workers are secretive about the nature of their working conditions Globalization & Sweatshops 11 12. Nike Sweatshops is a documentary about the sweatshops within Indonesia. This video can be located on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5uYCWVfu 12 13. The workers of the factories lived in horrible conditions Reports from variety NGOs and labor activists claimed that exploitation, poor working condition and range of human and labor abuses were accruing within these factories. Workers were threatened (by local police or mafia) if they decided to stand against the factor owners or attempt to create an independent union The plight of these conditions became publicised through the skilful use of media by serval NGOs. 13 14. Comparison on weekly wage 14 15. Clash of Civilizations The representation of Muslim Women in the West 15 16. The Clash of Civilizations by Samuel P. Huntington Clash of civilisations theory came to prominence in Huntingtons 1993 Foreign Affairs article entitled The Clash of Civilizations. Huntington argues that the post-Cold War conflict would not be ideology or economic, but cultural Identifying seven or eight major civilizations The articles most famous line is Huntington link Islamic civilisation and violence- that violence occurs with muslims on one hand and Orthodox Serbs in the Balkans, Jews in Israel, Hindus in India, Buddhists in Burma and Catholics in the Philippines. This analysis the Islamic Civilizations is unfair as stating the conflicts in Bosnia, Palestine and Kashmir are all the faults of the Muslims, who're the minorities and often face discrimination (or genocide) 16 17. The Clash of Civilizations by Samuel Huntington The clash of civilizations and war on terror has been entwined by the Bush Administration post 9/11 attacks Huntington definition of civilization has had an influence on US policy-makers distinction between civilized nations and rogue states The phrase war on terror was to heighten the fear while highlighting the righteousness of the Western Civilizations against the barbaric murders who would perpetrate such horrible crimes against innocent victims Often, post 9/11 the women of Islam are portrayed as a victim of this civilization (Islam) that they want to be rescued by the Western Civilizations. 17 18. Western Media Portrayal of Muslim Women The image of the veiled Muslim women is used in the West to highlight the oppressed women the Muslim women who does not have the same right as Western women do Women controlled by men Women controlled by Religion This image on Time magazine highlights this narrative, the young women are being persecuted by the males of their state. Not being able to live a free life, refused education and to disagree means a punishment of acid attack or your husband torturing you 18 19. Western Media Portrayal of Muslim Women 19 Images that contradict the mass media narratives of Muslim Women 20. Response from Muslim Women 21. References ABC News, (2014).
