    Be aware of the impact of your dollars.A locally owned independent business returns

    approximately 73% of each dollar spent back to the

    community. Local, independent businesses assist thecommunity through a multiplier effect: one dollar spent ata locally owned business will return ve times that amountwithin the community through city taxes, employees wages,and purchase of materials and supplies at other independentbusinesses. In addition, these businesses will turn that dollarback into the community through school funding, socialservices, and contributions to local non-prot organizations.

    Chains and franchises contribute roughly 43% and at timesas little as 20% of the stores sales back into the communitythrough employee wages, sales taxes, and property taxes.Frequently, a chain store's location is owned by the larger nonlocal company, and the business is given tax breaks in order for

    shareholder prots to remain high. Locally owned independentbusinesses do not receive such benets and thus contribute afar greater proportion of revenues to local taxes.

    Choice makes for a richer communityLocal, independent businesses are located all over greater

    Asheboro. You can grab a coffee to go, pick up locally grown

    produce or freshly baked bread, shop for unique gifts orhousehold items, or choose a good book for a day at the beach.You can get your hair cut, have your taxes prepared, or applyfor a mortgage at your friendly community bank or creditunion.

    These businesses add to the character that is Asheboro,contributing more than just goods and services. Theyoffer personalized attention, add diversity to our shoppingoptions, and bring life to historic buildings. And they paytheir employeesand local taxeswith the income theyreceive.     Dear Readers,

    If what Picasso says is true, thenartist Tracey J. Marshall has ledan exciting & interesting life as canbe seen by her Me and My Seven

    Personalities exhibit held at the CircaGallery in downtown Asheboro onAugust 20, 2010. According to herbrochure, she grew up on a farm herein North Carolina and was enthusiasticabout art from a very early age. After

    attending college at Savannah Collegeof Art and Design and receiving a BFAdegree, her style quickly developed intothe energetic and fun depictions of howshe experiences life. Thus, the Picassoquote appears to be true especially inhow it relates to Traceys life.

    What impressed me most aboutTracey was not her art though...it washer personality and her keen businesssense. Not to belittle what she does,but just about anyone can put painton a canvas and call it art. In fact, it

    seems as though we are going througha period in art history where anythinggoes. I dont know what historians willinevitably call this period of time, butperhaps it will become known as thePandemonium Era. That is, to a casualobserver, it seems as though anythinggoes and talent has very little to do withwhat becomes classied as great art.With that said, not everyone can makea living in art. In fact, the term starvingartist has become a clich for a reason...most would starve if they had to rely onthe income generated from their craft.

    Tracey, on the other hand, is a savvybusiness woman and marketer. Sheunderstands that in order for art to sell,it has to have a broad appeal and it hasto be marketed correctly. Most artistshave no idea how to market themselveswhich results in a lifetime in obscurity.It is obvious that Tracey understandsmore than the fundamentals ofmarketing, too. She understands thatmarketing is everything in the success

    or failure of a business and hasprobably invested as much time intogaining exposure as she has painting.She even has her swagger wagonwrapped with a representation of herart and her contact information; it isa mobile billboard for her business. Itwould be hard to pass by her vehiclewithout jotting down her website orphone number if, for nothing else, tosatisfy the curiosity of seeing what herart is all about.

    Me and My Seven Personalities

    was a wonderfully eclectic exhibit;there was something there for mosttastes. Although the girls drinkingmartinis depicted in many of herpaintings were not appealing to me, theItalian landscapes and more abstractpaintings were. What was clearlyevident was Traceys goal of exploringall of the places you can go with art.

    The exhibit was well attended withpeople from all walks of life. It was oneof the more enjoyable art exhibitions Ihave been to. Plus, it was held at theCirca Gallery which is always fun. If you

    can walk out of Circa Gallery without asmile on your face, Id say there is nohope for you ever being happy. Asyou will see by the pictures, everyonewas enjoying themselves and therewas plenty of positive, upbeat and funenergy to go around. In short, I had ablast and there was no shortage ofphoto opportunities, either.

    Our goal at Asheboro Magazineand Asheboro Events is to make youaware of all the cool things that go onin our community. Circa Gallery plays
