In addition to the semester fee, students are expected to purchase their own film and photographic paper. This can run an additional $30-$60 or more per year, depending upon how quickly the student uses the materials. Students will also need a camera that uses 35mm film.

NOTE: Students desiring placement in an Honors English class must meet the following criteria: score above average on a timed-writing exercise from a pre-selected prompt administered by the PVHS English department and have a favorable recommendation based on specific criteria from his current English teacher. 8th-graders must take the high school writing test and have 8th grade writing proficiency scores 17 (85%) or better and must score in the 85th percentile or above on the language arts portion of a national standardized test (i.e. Iowa). Selections for honors classes are competitive and have limited enrollment.

ELECTIVE courses do NOT count for English credit.

basic Skills or similar measurement) in reading will be assigned to this year-long course. Instruction is designed to increase the student’s reading skills in order to bring those skills up to a level that will enable the student to perform in a high school environment. 9 This class, designed for incoming freshmen, will introduce students to higher-level thinking skills through challenging materials from literature, film and appropriate periodicals. American Literature

11-12 This course introduces students to all aspects of American literature from its founding to the 20th Century, in chronological order. Students will be expected to write, discuss, read and test as the basis for evaluation.

American Literature HONORS

11 This course is designed to investigate the development of American literature from Colonial times through the 20th Century. Students will read works of a variety of lengths in various genres. A student in this course must possess the academic discipline to work independently, at a relatively fast pace, to complete the required readings. Students will critique analytical composition and skills for college bound students will be practiced. A research paper and/or poetry explications will be written, with emphasis on gaining inquiry skills. Students must maintain a “B” average to remain in the class.

Proficiency English 12

12 Required course for all seniors who NEED to receive a passing score on the Writing and/or Reading portion of the state proficiency exam. This course does NOT meet English credit requirements for graduation.

This semester course is designed to prepare seniors to pass the Nevada proficiency exams in reading and/or writing. Students will write narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive essays modeled after writing prompts commonly found in the exam. Reading will focus on the skills assessed by the reading exam.

British/World Literature

12 The first semester chronologically delineates a literary history, a sampling of British literature and culture from Anglo-Saxon to 20th Century Britain.

The second semester introduces the student to classical literature through the study of selected myths, legends, epics, plays, short stories, poetry, and film that are representative of the world’s cultures, ancient and modern. This is an integrated language arts class, where the study of all language arts skills is literature-driven.

9-12 This course is a prerequisite for all other journalism classes. 10-12 First semester introduces the student to a history of the theatre, basic acting techniques, theatre vocabulary, and character and scene analysis. Students will have the opportunity to prepare and perform mime, two-person scenes, and roles in one-act plays.

The second semester is an introduction to public speaking. Students will prepare and give speeches and will be introduced to communication theories, audience analysis, and voice training for speaking purposes.

Speech and theatre are performance-based courses. Participation is crucial to success. Students will have opportunities to make up work through alternative assignments.

Textiles 10-12 This is the study of sewing techniques with 4 projects throughout the year. First semester will include a stuffed animal project and an apron. 9-12 Covers same material as Algebra I. This course is reserved for those students who have excelled in Algebra I and elect a course with more challenging problems.

Algebra II 9-12 A review of basic algebraic concepts, including: solving linear equations and inequalities; absolute value; graphing linear, absolute value and piecewise functions on a coordinate plane; solving systems of equations and inequalities; matrices and determinates; quadratic functions; complex numbers; polynomials; rational equations; and radicals. Graphing calculators are used.

AP Calculus 12 This is a challenging course designed for excellent students, particularly those with interest in the sciences, statistics and accounting, or other math-related majors. Topics include advanced algebra, analytic geometry and trigonometry, as well as limits, differentiation, and integration. This course will cover the major topics usually covered in the first two semesters of a three semester calculus sequence.

Pre-calculus and teacher recommendation

Geometry 10-12 Enhancing deductive reasoning skills and learning to communicate this reasoning to others through the formal study of geometry. Congruency and similarity of geometric figures is deduced using theorems, corollaries, postulates, definitions, and constructions. Algebraic concepts are used to solve theorem and postulate related problems. Trigonometric functions are introduced in the solution of triangles.

MUSIC

Concert Band 9-12 Students are rehearsed to performing a variety of capacities throughout the year. First 2 months are used to stress marching band fundamentals, with the remainder of the year focused on more traditional concert band settings and winter season pep band.

Ability to read standard music notations; at least 2 years playing experience preferred. (Exceptions by director approval only)

Jazz Band 9-12 Students are rehearsed to perform music in the jazz and contemporary idioms. Improvisation is stressed along with stylistic accuracy. The Jazz band is required to perform often for the public at a variety of events. After school time for performing will be required.

Year long. 1 credit.

Ability to read standard music notation; at least 2 years playing experience. Admission by playing audition only.

Percussion Band

9-12 This percussion ensemble group performs during the fall and winter as drum line with the marching band. During the spring they will perform with the concert band.

A strong emphasis is placed on diversity within the animal kingdom, and animal behavior as it relates to physiological adaptations and environmental concerns. Future occupational opportunities in the zoological sciences are also investigated. Plant taxonomy including collection and identification of local plants is included in the fourth quarter.

IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software

10-12 PC Hardware and Software v4.0 helps to prepare students for the CompTIA A+ certification exams (http://www.comptia.org). The fundamentals part of the course, chapters 1–10, prepares students for the required CompTIA A+ Essentials exam (220-601).

The advanced part of the course, chapters 11–16, prepares students for CompTIA’s three job environment certification exams: IT (field) technician (220-602), remote support technician (220-603), and bench technician (220-604).

10-12 Networking for Home and Small Businesses This course teaches students the skills needed to obtain entry-level home network installer jobs. It provides a hands-on introduction to networking and the Internet using tools and hardware commonly found in home and small business environments. Instructors are encouraged to provide field trips and outside-the-classroom learning experiences. Labs include PC installation, Internet connectivity, wireless connectivity, file and print sharing, and the installation of game consoles, scanners, and cameras.

ARMY JROTC

This program prepares students for leadership roles while making them aware of their own rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. It is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school and provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation.

The curriculum is taught by retired military professionals and encompasses a broad spectrum of subjects such as: communication skills; leadership; physical fitness; first aid; drug abuse prevention; history; citizenship; technology awareness; and many others.
