Moose at Moose Creek Village - corner of 4th St. & South MainSculptor Terry Smith, Bloomington, created the moose. Smith may be best known for his greater than life size sculptures of baseball players at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. The local moose, known as Big Larry, was vandalized in 2010. Downtown business owners offered to chip in for the repairs and school kids took up a collection and brought it to the store. Smith wasn’t available for the repair which was turned over to Scott Forbes, local resort owner, who determined the moose was originally poured into a clay mold. Forbes painstakingly made repairs to the woven fiberglass mat and airbrushed details into the moose. Then Forbes finished the moose with urethane paints. The damaged antlers were replaced with a pair owner Tom Paulson found online. The moose was reinstalled in April 2011 and is still happily foraging greens in the “wetland” at Moose Creek.

Join us on a sculpture tour

Sculptural collage - Park Rapids Area Library, 210 1st Street West (parking/entrance east of Pleasant Avenue)John Billing grew up spending weekends at the family cabin on Big Sand Lake. In 2014, he created a large sculptural case containing a collage of images and objects that form a narrative relating to both the library and lakes country. Windows reminiscent of those from the original Park Rapids Carnegie Library as well as cabins and homes from the area cover the case, protecting the interior arrangement while also speaking to the area’s history of development, building and architecture. The interior assemblage of images and objects is representative of the local culture and flora and fauna in a way that reveals the connections inherent between them. Both found and created images and objects were used. The art installation was made possible by an Art Aware grant through Kitchigami Regional Library System and funded by the Legacy Amendment.

Tube Dude - Red Bridge Park, Park Rapids (access from state Hwy. 34 via Washington Ave. No. or Hwy. 71 via Beach Road)A sculpture, affectionately known as the Tube Dude, was installed in Red Bridge Park in 2015. Resident Liz Smith had seen the bicycle sculptures in a showroom in Sarasota, FL. After her friend, Linda Larson, was injured in a bike accident here, Liz made a large quilt to raise money to purchase the sculpture and pay for it to be installed along the Heartland Trail when the trail was extended through Red Bridge Park. The Hubbard Biking Group was involved in the project and Liz says the other heroes were the hundreds of individuals and businesses who bought quilt raffle tickets. “The Tube Dude is their sculpture donated to the people who ride the Heartland Trail. It is just such a whimsical sculpture that makes people smile when they see it.”

Totem - Nemeth Art Center, 301 Court Avenue (outside) and Carved Wolf Head - Coldwell Banker Clack & Dennis Real Estate, 101 South MainThe totem at Nemeth Art Center was part of a Region 2 Arts Council funded class led by artist Paul Albright and offered to the public. The white cedar log was cut and numbered - to make it easier for everyone to work on and then reassembled (in order) to form the totem. The students enjoyed two four-hour sessions of creative wood carving. The 12-foot tall totem averages 14 inches in diameter now greets visitors to the original courthouse. Paul also created the white pine wolf head that can be seen in the lobby of the Coldwell Banker Clack & Dennis Real Estate office (open 8:30am-2pm Saturday). The chain saw sculpted wolf head stands 6 feet tall and is at least 20 inches in diameter.

Heartwaters - Caretaker Woman - Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center, Itasca State ParkArtist Jeff Savage notes that the Headwaters of the Mississippi begins the “heartwaters” of this very nation we Americans call home. In Anishinabe (Ojibwe) belief it is the women who are Caretakers of the Water. We are to respect this responsibility of the sacred work of women by keeping this precious resource pristine and renewable for all future generations to enjoy. In his sculpture, a woman is leaning over, releasing a clutch of small turtles from a basket, renewing the seasons and continuing the waters of life. Her flowing hair is like that of flowing water. The turtles, strong water symbols, also symbolize the universal cycles of life in Anishinabe belief. The turtle’s round shell represents the earth, moon, sun and seasonal cycles. The legs of the turtle point in the four directions, his head points up to honor Grandfather Sun and his tail points down toward Mother Earth. Turtles show us all directions of life - they live in the water, walk on land and breathe air. Turtles are a strong symbol of the importance of the site - the beginning of the Headwaters. This sculpture was commissioned through Minnesota Percent for Art in Public Places, a program sponsored by the Minnesota State Arts Board and Department of Administration, with support from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Bronze Sculpture - Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center, Itasca State ParkThe six-foot bronze sculpture, Great Rivers of the World, depicts the four major river systems: the Nile in Africa, the Amazon in South America, the Chang Jiang (Yangtze) in China and and the Mississippi. The Itasca State Park Centennial Wagon Train commissioned the sculpture after its historic trek from the State Capitol to the Mississippi Headwaters in June 1991. Local craftsmen Keith Johnson and Bob and Wanda Odegard created the piece which was dedicated Sept. 6, 1993.

Polar Bear - North Star Orthodontics, 218 Industrial Park Road (at the end of Pleasant Avenue)Cindy Kelly’s fascination with polar bears began on a trip to Hudson Bay. She and her late husband, John, found the polar bear’s characteristics exemplified the fundamentals they were striving for in their business, such as resiliency and endurance. On another trip they met John Kessler, an artist who carves bears out of rock. Cindy told him she would love to have one of his bears but it would have to be a polar bear. About a year later, Kessler called and said he had a large rock that wanted to be a polar bear. John gave him the green light and he delivered the bear to Park Rapids on a flatbed truck. Winner of a naming contest was Winisk, after a river polar bears inhabit as it flows into Hudson Bay. The expanded obsidian lava Kessler uses was mined near Yosemite National Park. Kessler “listens” to the rock and lets the rock decide what it wants to be.

Bronze crucifix - St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Pleasant Avenue & 5th StreetArtist Ray Wattenhofer cast a bronze sculpture for the remodeled sanctuary of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. The work was installed in July 2007 and was the artist’s last sculpture. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Idaho State University, he had done a lot of Western pieces and other sculpture work, but is painting now. Wattenhofer started work on the crucifix in January 2007, hired a model and did preliminary drawings before he started the piece. He immersed himself in how the pain must have felt, but wanted to make the piece transcend pain. “I wanted to give a sense that there is more going on than a body hanging on the cross” and “more than just total despair.” The body of Christ is 5 feet tall; the cherry wood cross is 6 feet wide, 10 feet tall. The 33 thorns in the crown and nails are 22 karat gold leaf. The artist was raised on a farm west of nearby Two Inlets, joined the Coast Guard and turned saddle maker. Ray returned to Park Rapids in 1980 and is a member of St. Peter’s.
