Counselor’s Corner

High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time to start discussing the high school registration process.

Please remember students are assigned to high schools based on their primary address. If your

child is attending Arroyo Seco based on an Intra- or Inter-District Transfer, please note that IDT

expires at the end of the school year. If you would like your child to attend a high school other

than their home school, a new IDT must be completed for high school. The window for

submitting IDTs for high school is now open and you are encouraged to complete your request as

soon as possible. Forms can be found on our district website at www.hartdistrict.org under the

student drop down menu.

Saugus registration events start in March. Listed below are some important dates:

March 15th – Saugus Athletics and ASB will be coming to Seco to explain their programs.

During their PE classes, students will go to K-Hall for a presentation and an opportunity to meet

with students and coaches in their areas of interest.

March 16th – Saugus Electives will be coming to Seco to share their programs. During their

PE classes, students will go to K-Hall for an opportunity to meet with students, teachers and

advisors, in their areas of interest.

March 24th – Freshman Orientation at Saugus High School: Saugus High School

Counselors welcome all incoming freshman and their parents to attend this informative meeting

before the Saugus’ Open House. Time has yet to be determined.

March 29th – High School Counselors will be at Seco presenting an overview of high school

and the registration process as well as answering student questions and concerns. Students will

attend the presentation through their history classes. Each student will be given a registration

guide to take home and draft their course requests. Please review the guide with your child.

April 11-15th – High School Registration! Saugus counselors will meet individually with

each student to register and select high school courses. Please note that English, math and

science placements are determined by junior high school grades and performance. Students will

choose two electives and an appropriate physical education placement. Registration is done

through history classes and each team will register on a different date. Specific team dates are yet

to be determined.

Students interested in attending Academy of the Canyons – Students interested in applying for Academy of the Canyons must attend one of two informational

nights. Students MUST be accompanied by a parent:

Wednesday, February 3rd Thursday, February 4th 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Team News

7th

Grade

Aloha - Mrs. Klipfel, Mr. Oatey, Mrs. Simmons, Ms. West, Mrs. Chase

Team Aloha is looking forward to a great third quarter. In history class this quarter, we will be

learning about the Japanese Middle Ages including the development of the samurai warrior class.

We will then move on to the European Middle Ages where we will be studying about the

development of the medieval knight and the Crusades. On February 26, many of our students

will be participating in our annual nighttime optional field trip to Medieval Times Dinner and

Tournament where we will get a realistic experience of the European Middle Ages.

In English class, we will be working hard on argumentative writing. Building on the essay skills

we have already developed, we will now be adding counterclaims to our essays, while continuing

to construct strong thesis statements, supporting evidence, and textual analysis. While

investigating thematic topics of maturity and identity, we will be diving into a myriad of exciting

texts including poems, short stories, and nonfiction articles from such authors as Langston

Hughes, Rudyard Kipling, and Gary Soto.

In Math class, we will be diving into Algebra as we learn how to solve one-step, two-step, and

multi-step equations and inequalities. We will also be exploring what a scale factor is and how

that looks in real life. Students will be completing a project where they will be able to enlarge a

comic strip of their choice to show what they know regarding scale factors.

Quarter three in science brings us through a study of genetics and evolution. Students will learn

how their traits are passed down to them through their parents’ DNA and how those traits are

determined. Students will then be studying the key scientific principles of the theory of

evolution.

Please remember that Team Aloha offers study club four days a week to help our students get

extra help or get caught up on their missing work. Study club is held at lunch on Mondays,

Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and after school from 2:15-3pm on Thursdays.

Extreme - Mrs. Choate, Mrs. Larochelle, Mr. Lederman, Mrs. Mahoney

Team Extreme wants to remind you of our website. http://7thgradeteamextreme.weebly.com/

You can find helpful information about our team as well as the WEEKLY HOMEWORK

CALENDAR link. The team will be having a TEAM DAY on Thursday, March 10th. Look for

more details soon.

Page 10: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram Seco Junior High School ... Maggie Collier Alyson Cortez Charles D’Angerio Tabitha Doebler ... Georgia McDow Nathan Miller

In English we are finishing our “Taking Risks” thematic unit, and then we will be writing our

culminating project, an essay. We will be studying figurative language and sentence skills. We

will also begin a new thematic unit: Maturity.

Math 7 worked on Ratios, Proportions & Percents during quarter 2. We discovered how unit

ratios, unit rates and proportional relations are used in the real world. We created a “Percent

Puppet” to practice shopping and have a sale to find the discount price of an item. During quarter

3 we will be evaluating expressions, equations and inequalities. We started this unit with a look

at the Fibonacci Sequence in pinecones, flowers and plants. It is fun to discover how math is all

over our everyday world.

During the 2nd quarter World History and Geography explored several ancient civilizations in the

Americas including the Mayas, Incas, and Aztecs. We also studied China’s Golden Age

including the Mongol Ascendancy. During quarter 3 we will be exploring Medieval Japan and

Europe.

In science quarter two emphasized genetics. We learned how and why traits are passed among

generations. We completed the Pet Project, where we determined the genotypes and phenotypes

of an entire family. We are currently studying in-depth a genetic disease and presenting our

findings to our classmates. In February we will be moving on to the study of natural selection.

Fusion - Mr. Dannerth, Mrs. Malneck, Mr. Nez, Mr. Stuart, Mrs. Chase

Fusion Parents - Thank-you to all who made the Fall Student Led Conference such a big success.

We hope to see you in the spring.

In science we have been using microscopes. We will move through taxonomy and into natural

selection by the end of the quarter.

This quarter in seventh grade English we will continue our journey through the universal themes

of literature as we complete our unit on the Hero’s Journey. We will also continue strengthening

our essay writing skills as we begin a unit on argumentative writing (and the sharp wits of your

children become even more persuasive than ever – don’t say I didn’t warn you). We will also be

reading and analyzing the novel, The Door in the Wall, which dovetails nicely with Mrs.

Malneck’s history unit on the Middle Ages, the setting of the novel. Lastly, we will continue our

work to improve our grammar skills so that text-speak becomes a thing of the past!!!

Fusion math classes started the 3rd quarter by reflecting back on their work from last semester as

students completed their first student led conference. With the conferences complete, the math 7

classes are hard at work simplifying algebraic expressions and the accelerated class is beginning a

unit of solving linear equations.

Genesis - Mrs. Dibene, Mr. Elliott, Mr. Tracy, Mrs. Wheeler

Team Genesis has been very busy as we start the third quarter. In history, our students are

learning about China and Japan and then will be moving to medieval Europe. They will explore

the spread of Christianity, European feudalism, the Crusades, and the Magna Carta.

Page 11: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram Seco Junior High School ... Maggie Collier Alyson Cortez Charles D’Angerio Tabitha Doebler ... Georgia McDow Nathan Miller

In English, we started the quarter by looking at medieval literature, including stories about King

Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The students will also be learning how to write an

effective argument paper.

The science classes will be studying evolution and will be learning about Natural Selection,

fossils and how species change over time.

In math, we will continue to tackle common core math and problem solving.

Later this quarter, our students will be joining the rest of Seco’s 7th graders on a trip to Medieval

Times in Buena Park. This will provide our students a chance to see a medieval tournament first

hand.

We had quite a few students join the 7th grade Honor Society at the start of the quarter. We are

proud of the achievements of all of our students and look forward to what the rest of the year has

in store for us.

8th

Grade

Odyssey - Mrs. Ake, Mr. Bowers, Mrs. Koegle, Ms. Suazo

In science, Odyssey students will be exploring the wonderful world of physics! We will explore

the big question: what causes motion? We will begin by studying the various forces that cause

motion, and then move on to studying motion itself, with the help of some remote control cars,

matchbox cars, and all things that move. We will also explore the world of electricity and

magnetism. Lots of exciting activities and labs will accompany our study of physics. It's going

to be a blast!

We are mushing through The Call of the Wild, in English. Soon we will begin our

Argumentative Essay Unit. This will help us to get ready for the District Writing Exam at the end

of the quarter. We will also finish up our Career Unit by creating résumés and business letters.

In History, we are continuing to learn about the early Presidents. We will then move onto the

events that make up westward movement and how the nation made its way to the Pacific Ocean.

Following westward expansion, we will be investigating the differences of the North and South,

and how those differences in economy and society lead to the division within the nation.

This quarter we will be studying how to solve equations and how to solve systems of equations.

Students will discover, through multiple approaches that the solution to a system of equations is

the point of intersection. We will connect the problems in the unit to situations that may be

encountered in real life. For example, we will determine which is more cost effective Starbucks

or Keurig, which cable company provides the best rates over a period of time, and which gym

provides the best rates to their members.

Page 12: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram Seco Junior High School ... Maggie Collier Alyson Cortez Charles D’Angerio Tabitha Doebler ... Georgia McDow Nathan Miller

Revolution - Mrs. Crawford, Mr. Good, Mr. Olson, Mr. Rippe, Mrs. Meraz

This month in English we will be delving into Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver. Students will

unravel the mystery of the world Lowry has created and be presented with essential questions

about life, knowledge, happiness, and morality.

Third quarter in Science, students on team Revolution will start out with the study of motion.

Students will experiment with slope, average speed and acceleration. Students will learn how to

solve for time, distance and speed, using the speed formula (s=d/t) and its variations. Students

will then study forces, how pushes and pulls are measured and quantified in physics. Students

will experiment with the effects of friction forces and how forces can combine or cancel each

other out. Students will also learn about the property of density, and how an object will sink or

float, depending on how much matter is found per each unit of volume. (D=m/v).

Revolution history will focus on the growth of the nation between 1800 and 1860. We will

examine social and political trends that shaped the nation including slavery, women's rights,

temperance, and government power.

On Revolution, Math 8 students are looking at one of the building blocks of math, solving

equations. Students are able to take real life applications and see how these equations can

actually be used to solve problems in their everyday lives. In Algebra, students are learning about

radical expressions so that they will be prepared for the quadratic formula. They are really

excited for this next challenge.

Triumph - Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Simoncioni, Mr. VanDyke

In Team Triumph Science, we are transitioning from Chemistry to Physics. This quarter we will

have the opportunity to learn about Density, Floating and Sinking, Velocity, Acceleration, Forces,

and Newton's Laws of Motion. It is always my favorite Quarter, with many hands-on labs and

activities to experience these concepts first-hand. Make sure to have a calculator (no phones can

be used) as we will do many measurements and calculations during practice, worksheets, labs,

and tests. May the Force be with you! (physics pun)

Team Triumph students continue an in-depth study of common core math standards. We will

solve multi-step equations, systems of equations, and determine how these topics compare to

functions, a topic we studied last quarter. We will concentrate on how we make sense of

problems and persevere through them. [Common Core Math Practice #1]

For Team Triumph English, Mrs. Ford's class is starting off the quarter with a College and Career

unit. Students are writing business letters, resumes, and filling in job applications. After that,

students will read the novel The Paper Cowboy by Kristin Levine and write an accompanying

argumentative essay. Students continue with grammar, vocabulary, and, of course, reading logs!

In Quarter 3, Team Triumph students will be studying the Early Republic, including all the

Presidents from Washington through Jackson. We will create a flip-book project comparing the

beliefs of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson and explaining how their feud led to the

creation of the first two political parties. Later, as they learn about the French Revolution and the

War of 1812, as part of my “Hands-on History” program, students will be able to use a

(harmless!) guillotine and hold an actual piece of the U.S.S. Constitution, a naval ship more

Page 13: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram Seco Junior High School ... Maggie Collier Alyson Cortez Charles D’Angerio Tabitha Doebler ... Georgia McDow Nathan Miller

commonly known as “Old Ironsides.” Finally, students will study one of the most interesting

figures in American history, Andrew Jackson, and they will be asked to create a poster depicting

Jackson as either a hero, or a villain, and explain why they feel that way.

Viper - Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Hougo, Mrs. Kurowski, Mrs. Tracy, Mrs. Meraz

Team Viper is off to a great start for third quarter. In history, we begin our journey with President

John Adams and the challenges of the young nation. The second part of the quarter will take a

closer look at the westward movement, the industrialized North, and life in the slave South. This

will set the stage for the Civil War in fourth quarter.

Science class enters the field of Physics. Motion, Speed, Density and Force are covered in an

interactive, hands-on way. Relating these topics to everyday life is the goal to make the learning

both enjoyable and relevant.

Math 8 classes are returning to equations in one variable, to get a deeper look at how these

equations are solved, written, and applied. Algebra 1B is starting their unit on exponents, radicals,

and polynomials in preparation for using the Quadratic Formula.

English classes are tackling resumes and business letters at the start of the quarter as we begin to

prepare for Showcase interviews at the end of the school year. Argument essays with researched

support will follow in February, and students will have the opportunity to engage in literature

circles to read and discuss core pieces of text. The new year is a very busy time for team Viper

students as we have officially reached the halfway point!

Exploratories

Beginning Band – In Beginning Band, we will continue to work on learning new notes

on the instruments, reading music, developing tone quality, and playing as an ensemble.

We are working on some new concert pieces and looking forward to our next

performance in May.

Advanced Band – Advanced Band is currently working on the District Honor Band

music. The auditions are on Friday, January 29th and Saturday, January 30th. We will

then continue working on music for our pops concert with the Saugus High School Band,

our May concert and our Disneyland Concert on May 18th.

Percussion Class – In Percussion class, the students will be continuing to develop their

technique and ensemble skills. Over the coming weeks they will perform a solo, a couple

of duets and one larger ensemble piece. They will also be listening to percussion

ensemble/drumming music from a number of different genres.

Automation and Robotics - Students trace the history, development and influence of

automation and robotics as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer,

machine automation and computer control systems. Students use the VEX Robotics

platform to design, build and program real-world objects such as traffic lights, toll booths

and robotic arms.

Culinary I– In Culinary I, students are exploring many exciting themes and discovering

their cooking talents. Topics covered this quarter include food and kitchen safety, recipe

reading, proper measuring, food labels, and nutrition. Students will also prepare several

delicious recipes, such as buttermilk pancakes, fresh salsa, and homemade pizza. Recipes

and pictures of the foods we make can be found on our class website.

music has developed from the early 1450's starting with the Renaissance Period and

ending with current styles such as Movie, Popular, Country, Broadway, Jazz, and many

other modern styles of music. We will be learning basic music theory in order for

students to be able to read through a choral piece and know what to sing. The students

will explore how their voices work and will learn different exercises that strengthen

different aspects of their voice. Students will learn how to sing together with their peers,

sometimes singing all together and sometimes singing different parts. We will be

listening to many different pieces and discussing what makes a piece considered "good

music". We will conclude the quarter with an in-class performance of all the songs that

we will have learned.

A.S.B.

This quarter ASB has lots of fun activities planned. It all started with our Seco Cup

Soccer tournament. Community Day took place on January 25th that included two

different speakers talking to our students about improving school culture and making

Arroyo Seco a great place for all students to learn and grow. Our third quarter semi-

formal dance, "An Evening in New York" takes place on February 19th

, from 7pm to

9pm. To find reminders on important dates you can text the message @arroyose to the

Every Can Counts

It is that time of year again where we want to do something to help our community.

Chartwells (our Food Service Company) has encouraged the Arroyo Seco students to

collect for the food drive. Last year Arroyo Seco was the biggest donator with over 100

lbs. from Mrs. Choate’s classes alone. But this year Arroyo Seco decided to step it up a

notch and all 7th

& 8th

grade teams collected food donations starting at Thanksgiving

time. It was absolutely amazing what a few students could do when they thought about

giving from their heart. The 7th

grade Team Aloha brought in the most items, but the

overall total count donated from Arroyo Seco students was 3,788 items. I want to thank a

few teachers who helped to make this possible: Mrs. Klipfel (Team Aloha), Mrs. Choate

(Team Extreme), Mrs. Malneck (Team Fusion), Mrs. Dibene (Team Genesis), Mrs.

Koegle (Team Odyssey), Mr. Olson (Team Revolution), Mrs. Gallagher (Team

Triumph), and Mrs. Kurowski (Team Viper). Thanks to all our teachers for challenging

and encouraging your students to give because “Every Can Counts!”

Welcome to 3rd

quarter! It’s always a busy one.

First up we have a Fundraiser Drive. The first week of February (1-5)

team teachers will have collection boxes in their classrooms. While we

do participate in the Box Tops for Education program donations are not

limited to Box Tops. Cash, loose change, and checks made out to

Arroyo Seco Library all count toward team totals, and count toward

new, current resources for our students!

In March we will host the annual Scholastic Book Fair! I will need

extra volunteers 3/8-15. Students will visit through their English

classes.

Team Extreme has already visited to research genetic disorders. Aloha

and Fusion are scheduled to research the Middle Ages and mythology.

Many students have been checking out books for reading logs and class

novels.

Read Your Way Across the USA is cruising right along. Many students

are discovering new books and places, and two are neck in neck for the

lead!

Once again, PLEASE register your Ralphs card to benefit the Arroyo

Seco Library! It’s free money, all it takes is a few clicks (instructions

are included on the following pages) or taking the scan bar to the

register when you checkout (contact me for a copy). A portion of your

bill is designated to benefit the Library; there is no additional donation

from you. We have 30 participants so far, I think we could do much

better!

Below you’ll find a fun reading challenge I’ve made available to

students to help diversify their reading. Parents are welcome to play

along!

Here’s an interesting article about children and social media:
