1. ResistanceThe value of conductor DC resistance given inthe previous table are based on 20 °C. In casethe DC resistance is required any othertemperature the following formula is used :

R = R20 x [1 + ( – 20)] /km

WhereR : Conductor DC resistance at °C /kmR20 : Conductor DC resistance at 20 °C /km

: Operating temperature °C: Resistance temperature coefficient 1/°C= 0.00393 for Copper= 0.00403 for Aluminum

To get the AC resistance of the conductor atits operating temperature the followingformula is usedRa.c = R x (1 + yp + ys) /KmWhereyp and ys are the proximity and skin effectfactors respectively which depend on thelaying and operating frequency of the cable

2. InductanceSelf and mutual inductance are formulated asfollow

mH/KmL = K + 0.2 In

Number of wires in conductor K (50Hz)1 0.05003 0.07787 0.064219 0.055437 0.052861 and over 0.514

WhereL : Inductance mH/KmK : Constant depends on the conductor’s

number of wiresd : Conductor diameter mms : Axial spacing between cables mm

= 1 x S in case of trefoil formation= 1.26 x S in case of flat formation

3. REACTANCE (Inductive Reactance)X = 2 * *f*L ( /km)

Wheref = Frequency (Hz)L = Inductance (mH/km)

4. IMPEDANCEThe total opposition that a circuit offers to theflow of altemating current

Z = (Resistance2 + Reactance2) ( km)Note : Final AC volt dropVac = (Voltage2

resistance + Voltagereactance)

5. Capacitance

C = µF/Km

WhereC : Operating capacitance µF/Km

r : Relative permittivity of insulationd : Diameter under insulation mmD : Diameter over insulation mm

6. Insulation ResistanceR = K ln D M /Km

d

WhereR : Insulation resistance M /KmK : Constant depends on the

insulationd : Diameter of the conductor mmD : Diameter of the insulated core mm

7. Charging CurrentThe charging current is the capacitive currentwhich flows when an AC voltage is applied tothe cables as a result of the capacitancebetween the conductor and earth, and for amulti core cable in which cores are notscreened, between conductors. The value canbe derived from following the equation:IC = U0 c 10 6 A/Km

WhereIC : Charging current A/kmU0 : Phase voltage V

: 2 ff : Operating frequency HzC : Capacitance to neutral µF/Km

8. Dielectric LossesThe dielectric losses of an AC cable areproportional to the capacitance, thefrequency, the phase voltage and the powerfactor. The value can be derived from thefollowing equation :Wd = cu0

2 tan 10 6 W/Km/Ph

WhereWd : Dielectric Losses W/Km/Ph

: 2 ff : Operating frequency HzC : Capacitance to neutral µF/KmU0 : Phase voltage Vtan : Dielectric power factor

9. Cable AmpacityCable Ampacity is defined as the maximumcurrent the cable can carry at its maximumoperating temperature.In the technical information tables thefollowing installation conditions wereassumed during the current calculationAmbient air temperature = 40 °CAmbient ground temperature = 35 °CSoil thermal resistivity = 1.2 °C.m/WBurial depth = 0.5 Mt.In Case the installation conditions aredifferent from the tasted, the derating factorstabulated in tables to calculate.The new current carrying capacity.The cable Ampacities are based on IEC 60287.

10. Short Circuit CapacityTable 14 17 give the short circuit forconductor used on the following conditions :A. Short circuit starts from the maximum

operating conductor temperatureXLPE = 90 °CPVC = 70 °C

B. Maximum temperature during shortcircuitXLPE = 250 °CPVC = 160 °C for C.S.A 300mm²

= 140 °C for C.S.A > 300mm²C. Maximum short circuit current duration is

5 seconds.If the short circuit current is required atduration not mentioned in the catalogue,

it is obtained by dividing the short circuitcurrent for 1 seconds by the square rootof required duration as follows:

It =

WhereIt : Short circuit current for t second kAI1 : Short circuit current for 1 second kAt : Duration Sec.

11. Voltage DropWhen current flows in a cable conductor thereis a voltage drop between the ends ofconductors which is the product of the currentand impedance. The following equationsshould be used to calculate the voltage dropA. Single phase circuit

Vd = 2I (R cos + X sin ) VB. Three phase circuit

Vd = 3I ( R cos + X sin ) V

WhereVd : Voltage drop VI : Load current A

: Route length KmR : AC Resistance /kmX : Reactance /kmcos : Power factor /km

WhereX = L 10 3 /km

Where: 2 f

f : Operating frequency HzL : Inductance mH/Km

Relation between cos and sinCos 1.0 0.9 0.85 0.8 0.71 0.6 0.5

Sin 0.0 0.44 0.53 0.6 0.71 0.8 0.87

LV cable system should be planned soas not to exceed voltage drop of3 – 5 % in normal operating conditions

Voltage drop data for LV Single &Multi – core cable are tabulated intables.
