BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
William Charles Ford Reed was born in Columbia, Pennsylvania, on April 22, 1831 to
the Reverend Eliphalet and Mary Throckmorton Reed. His father being a minister of the
Methodist Episcopal Church and an itinerant of the Philadelphia Conference, Reed lived in
various places during his early years including a family property in Queen Anne County,
Maryland.
In 1844 Reed’s parents established their home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to facilitate his
education at Dickinson College. At age fourteen, he entered the Dickinson Grammar school.
Six years later, Reed graduated with the Class of 1851 from Dickinson College. Three years
later the College conferred upon him the degree of Master of the Arts.
For some years after his graduation, Reed taught school in different localities, including
two years on a plantation in the South, where the students composing his select school were the
children of neighboring planters. He also managed his father’s property in Queen Anne County,
Maryland. In 1861 he moved with his parents to Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, where, he was
married to Valedia Ann McFadden in 1863. Of their five children, three lived to survive him.
After teaching for a number of years at various schools in the area, Reed became
Postmaster of Mount Joy, an office that he administered for almost eleven years. For many years
he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Mount Joy, serving as Secretary of the
Board of Trustees, and both Secretary and Treasurer of the Board of Stewards. At various times
he was Superintendent of the Sunday-school and a licensed exhorter. William Charles Ford
Reed lived in retirement from 1888 until his death on March 23, 1907.
Ann Eliza Reed was the older sister of William C. F. Reed. She was educated at the
Wesleyan Female Collegiate Institute in Delaware, where she graduated with the Class of 1841.
She married a man named Bowes, but little other is known of her life.
COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
The William Charles Ford Reed Collection was donated to the college in 1951 by the
sons of William C. F. Reed, Class of 1851. The collection contains some of Reed’s student
writings, notebooks, and his complete set of school books. A subsequent donation in 1956
consisted of a few papers and 37 school books belonging to William’s older sister, Ann Reed.
The papers of the Reed Collection are housed in one document box, and the books are housed
separately, with an appendix attached to the collection inventory. The papers are arranged into
three series: Notebooks, Writings, and Miscellaneous. There is one photograph of William Reed
that is housed separately in PC 2001.16.
The Notebooks series contains notebooks and copybooks used by William Reed during
his years at Dickinson College. They are arranged alphabetically by the name of the course:
Classics, English, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Natural Sciences, and Religion. Under each
course, the notebooks are listed in rough chronological order. The Writings series contains
orations and essays written from William Reed’s sophomore to senior years. They are arranged
by date. The Miscellaneous series contains loose mathematical notes, hand-drawn maps, an
1851 Commencement program for Dickinson College, and a folder of papers belonging to Ann
Reed. The papers of Ann Reed include a mathematical copybook, a hymn, and a college catalog
for the Wesleyan Female Collegiate Institute from which Ann graduated in 1841.
