ACS CELEBRATES 37TH YEAR Ron Wunner, Principal Phil.3:5-11 Alumni Newsletter February 2011 Greetings from ACS! The ACS ministry now includes a dynamic preschool program (ABC Pre- school) which is fully licensed by the State of California and offers daily instruction and care for children ages 2 years of age to 4.9 years of age. The K-8 program continues a tradition of excellence that began with our first K-4 students in 1973. Hard to believe that some of our first year students are closing in on their 50th birthday! In addition to our 37th year, we are also celebrating our 10th year in our “new” K-4 classrooms and beautiful gymnasium. I know many of your remember our 27 years using the Lutheran Gym for P.E., volleyball and basketball games! God has blessed our school over these many years and the greatest blessing has been the students who have attended the school! I hope this newsletter sparks some great memories of your days at ACS! PETER PAN ACS TO PRESENT FAMED CHILDREN’S STORY ON APRIL 1 & 2 The students of ACS continue to set a high standard for quality productions (going back to the famed Music Machine Production in the AFBC Sanctuary in the late 1970’s) . Recent plays include, Titanic (‘08), Charley and The Chocolate Factory (‘09) and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (‘10) . This year’s play is Peter Pan. Our production director is Mrs. Betty Packer who teaches English and History at the school. Mrs. Packer always gives an uplifting “edit” to the plays. ABC Preschool (4 year olds) and K-8 students are involved in the play. You will delight in the set design, acting and music that is incorporated into the production. Bring the entire family for a great evening of fun, adventure and wholesome entertainment. Ryan Sundberg Elected Supervi-

sor for 5th District

ACS graduate Ryan Sundberg

was elected Humboldt County

Supervisor for the 5th District in

the November, 2010 election.

Ryan edged out his opponent by

154 votes (with 10,000 total

votes cast ) .

Ryan was awarded a degree

from Humboldt State University

(2002) in Business Administra-

tion, served on the Tribal Council

of the Trinidad Rancheria and

the Board of Directors of the

McKinleyville River Rotary .

Ryan, and wife Kim , are the

proud parents of five year old

daughter, Sofie. Ryan’s wife Kim

teaches language arts at

Fieldbrook School.

EMILY SUTTER OLDENKAMP ON A MISSION TO

SACRAMENTO STATE UNIVERSITY

ACS graduate Emily (Sutter) Oldenkamp is active on the mission

field and serves with husband Tim as a part of the Chi Alpha

Campus Ministry team serving Sacramento State University.

Emily, daughter of Kevin and Laura Sutter, received the ACS

Salt and Light Award upon graduation from ACS. Her parents,

Kevin and wife, Laura are part of the Youth With A Mission staff. You can write

JAMES DOUGHERTY AND

FAMILY SERVE IN CHINA

ACS grad James Daugherty and wife, Lisa, have

been serving the Lord in Beijing, China since

2006. James writes that they have started a

language school, hosted over 50 short term

visitors, started an educational travel company

and a leader- ship develop-

ment and team building

program for university stu-

dents. Young son Josiah

helps mom and dad in a

very active life. James and

family will be in the U.S.A. over several months

and we hope we can get he and his family to

visit ACS and share some of his experiences in

China. James is the son of Dan and Lisa

Daugherty formally of Trinidad where Dan

served as a Pastor. James is a graduate of Le-

tourneau University. In a past email James

advised Mr. Wunner that while in the 4th grade

at ACS he was inspired during a chapel mes-

sage to achieve excellence in his studies and

from that date he achieved outstanding

grades. James graduated with honors from

Letourneau University!

THROSSELS IN BOLIVIA

Tom and Janine (Otterbeck)

Throssel (Janine attended ACS) and

sons, Philip and Peter returned to

Bolivia after a year in Humboldt

County. A major objective of the

Throssel’s during the year was to

have Peter (oldest son) graduate

from ACS (which he did in June,

2010). The entire family was in-

volved in the life of ACS with Janine

teaching Spanish, Tom providing

computer instruction, helping with

school plays and a variety of school

improvement projects. Son, Philip

(grade 5) played basketball for ACS

and Peter played “Peter” in our an-

nual school play, The Lion, The Witch

and the Wardrobe. He also traveled

to Washington, D.C. as a regional

representative in the Association of

Christian Schools International

Spelling Bee where he finished 7th!

FORMER ACS STUDENT ACHIEVES FAME IN

ICE DANCING

In 1985 a tiny first grader, Naomi Lang , began

pursuit of her dreams.

The Arcata born Native

American, is a member of

the Karuk Tribe .

Naomi began her training

with the Red- wood Con-

cert Ballet in Eureka. Cast

as a bon-bon in the

“Nutcracker”, she first performed on stage at

the age of six. Naomi wished to skate after at-

tending a “Smurfs on Ice” show. She won the

U.S. Ice Dancing Championships four years in a

row (“1999-2003”), and participated in the Win-

ter Olympic Games in 2001-02. She now lives in

Arizona where she is happily married and per-

forms for special events as she did this Christmas

Season being featured on a special NBC special

Christmas program on November 28. Naomi

sent the school an autographed picture and

shared how she remembered how kind every-

one was during her time at ACS.

Russell Robinson is a mechanic at Expert Tire in Eureka; Shelly Pawlyck lives in So.Carolina where she works in the technology branch of the banking industry; James Pawlyck lives near Redding, Ca. where he farms and has a woodshop: Colin Redmond is attending Southern Oregon University, majoring in Political Science: Steven Dollar and wife are the owners of TJ Tractor and Yard Service in Eureka: Saiah Wunner is employed by Mad River Hospital; John Pittman is the owner of Pittman Trucking. Daughter Megan attends ACS; Christopher Reed is a contractor in Lynnwood, Wa. Chris has served on the foreign mission field and is now developing housing for International Students; Jeff Reed and family live near Hollister where Jeff is a California State Park Ranger (State Vehicular Recreation Area) in Hollister; Matthew Reed and family live in Blaine, Wa. Matt is a U.S. Border Patrol Agent; Aaron Pick served as a high school math teacher and youth leader in San Jose, Ca. Obtained his M.B.A. from U.C. California and has worked in the non-profit sector. He has been instrumental in establishing a Non-Profit community resource ministry in Nicaragua which has served over 100,000 people; Lisa Pick Koppenjan is teaching English at a high school in Goleta, Ca; Rachel Pick Henson resides in Ojai, Ca. raising three children; Beth Homes Novack lives near Chicago and teaches music. She also plays back-up violin for the likes of Barry Manilow; Rachel Harrison Wheeler is attending St. John's Seminary in Collegeville, MN, pursuing a master's degree; Rebecca Harrison Gores is working as an R.N. in a pain clinic in Eugene; Bethany Harrison Drysdale works for the tourism arm of the State of Nevada; Allison Hall Herbert is currently on the mission field in Niger, Africa; Angie Sundberg serves the Yurok Tribe as a social worker under the Indian Child Welfare Act; Ben Enos is attending U.C. Davis; Andrew Enos attended HSU and is now working towards a mechanics degree at C.R; Blaine Green is a corporate attorney in San Francisco; Jesse Atchley is employed by the U.S. Border Patrol in the high tech field of communications and homeland security.
