MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I would like to welcome all parents to this month’s edition of the
Newsletter. All of our students have been involved with examinations at
the end of the year, and there have already some very good results.
Mixer (Y6) has earned a level 6 in his end of KS2 SAT tests for both
numeracy and literacy. For those who are not familiar with National
Curriculum levels, this is very exceptional, and he is right on course
for a very successful start to the secondary school in August.
Phu (Y9B), another one of our top G&T students, returned from visiting
admissions tutors at MIT in the US over the Songkran holidays. We have
put together an individual programme of study for him, consisting of
IGCSE and A-Level subjects as well as a research project, to give him
the best opportunity for him to reach his goal of studying in this most
prestigious of colleges. I am delighted to have been able to do this:
meeting the unique needs to each students is what we aim to do at
Traill. My thanks go to Mr Barry, who put the programme together.
The senior students are now coming to the end of their Cambridge
examinations. Exit polls are generally good and I am cautiously
optimistic that we will do at least as well as the exceptional results of
last year.
The end of the school year is very busy and I would like to remind
parents of important events coming up soon. Please would you make
every effort to support your children at the Primary and Secondary
Prize giving ceremonies, the Primary and Secondary Summer
productions and the parents meeting. All the dates are on the school
calendar, and there will be further reminders nearer the time.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS This month KG students became superheroes! We looked at different
heroes and villains and did lots of artwork to go along with the topic.
We all made smoothies in class with items purchased from our trip to
Foodland.
In order to improve home-school relationships, the KG team invited
parents to a ‘Stay, Play and Learn’ session. Parents got to see how our
activities link to the Early Year’s Curriculum and had the chance to play
with their children during the morning session.
Our final trip to ‘Playtime’ is planned for Friday 12th June. Students
have already looked at its website and are very excited about the trip!
P.S - we also have a new pet in KG…it’s a millipede! Name suggestions
welcomed…;)

YEAR 1 NEWS
Imagine what it would be
like if you could not see
anything !
Year 1 have been exploring
the senses this term and
children have been trying to
imagine what it would be like
to live without the sense of
sight. The children have
guessed who someone is by
using the sense of touch
instead of sight. Also, they
have taken turns to guide
blindfolded children around
the playground, by giving
clear instructions while
directing with a gentle touch
on the shoulders.

THE HUMAN BODY Year 5 are currently involved in the study of the human body. As a result of this, we
have adopted a new “student” in our classroom. His name is Mr. George. He does not
talk much but makes himself extremely useful during Science classes. He looks quite
slender and pale but has proved to be a very good listener. Our students absolutely
love him (see picture attached) and everybody hopes that he is going to stay with us
for a long time.
This term, we are learning about different systems at work in our body: among these,
bones and muscles, the nervous system, the digestive system, the circulatory system,
the respiratory system and the immune system. Children are engaged in the study of
the main organs, such as brain, heart, skin, liver, lungs, stomach, intestine and
kidneys.
We are also holding some practical sessions at the school gym, where children have
the opportunity to see their muscles and bones at work. They really love working out!
Last but not least, we are considering the best diet to keep our body healthy and fit.
This is why children are strongly encouraged to eat plenty of vegetables, fruit and
healthy food, in and out of school.

The adventure began for our oldest students (Year 5 and 6) on Wednesday 25th March, as they headed to
camp in Saraburi. For the Year 5 children, this would be their first time on camp and away from their
parents for 2 nights! For the Year 6 this would be their second time, so we all knew that they would be able
to support the teachers in taking care of the Year 5s.
At camp the children were separated into two main camps, one for the girls and one for the boys. They
also found they had extra visitors throughout their two days in the form of bugs! – From centipedes to
slugs!
On their first day the children found out the history of the Scouts here in Thailand and many of the rituals
the scouts have to perform. The children completed their scout promise and began their skills learning.
This started off with ‘tying the knot’. The children had to learn four different methods of tying knots and
then completed a competition to find out which group’s knots were the strongest!
Later that day the children lit campfires and cooked their own dinner; including sausage, egg, soup and
noodles.
That night the camp games began, and not even a huge thunderstorm could stop the children enjoying
them. Once the games finished the children had a muddy run to their bedrooms.
The next day started extremely early – 5.30am! With stretches and exercises before shower and
breakfast. The day’s events included a 4km walk and nature study, and then the obstacle course!
The course was something the children had been waiting for! There were many different obstacles to
experience, from crawling under rope nets, climbing across rope bridges and swinging over muddy
puddles! And yes, as you can imagine, the children got extremely muddy and very wet – but every child left
the course with massive grins and a realization they could achieve anything they put their mind to!
The final night the children took part in the campfire performance. Each group had to create a show to
perform to the rest of the group, interspersed with fun games and dances. By the end of the night the
children, and their teachers, were exhausted and longed for their beds!
Another early start and then the final adventure began; a trip to Mor Por Farm. Here the children
experienced horse riding; collecting chicken eggs and feeding the animals.
The bus ride home was very quiet as every member of the group slept with happy memories of the past
few days!
A special thanks to the Scout Leaders, for organising the games and looking after us!

Crazy Science Gets Crazier – is that possible??
So this is our last term in this
academic year and our last
contribution to our school
newsletter…
This term we have been creating
and building science projects:
Dancing Raisins – what fun we
had putting raisins in sprite. The
carbon dioxide bubbles attached
themselves to the outside of the
raisins making it appear as if they
were dancing!
Glitter globes – Using agar we
found we could thicken water
creating a solution with viscosity
which suspended glitter, for a
short time, when we shook our
globes.
Ice Art – The children learned
that when you added salt to ice,
some of the ice melted. This
happens because the salt pulls
some water away from its crystal
form in ice. When that happens,
the ice-salt mixture will get
colder than 0 degrees.
Making Clouds - When a rain cloud
gets so full of water, the water
has to go somewhere and will
break through the cloud and start
to fall to the ground. It also looked
really pretty!
Terrariums – We wanted to
create an indoor environment
where plants could ‘look after
themselves’. A terrarium keeps a
semi constant oxygen, carbon
dioxide and water level, allowing
plants to look after themselves.
We hope you have enjoyed finding
out about all the things we have
learned in our Crazy Science ECA
– we definitely have!

TRAILL READERS Have you ever read a book and never wanted it to end? I have. Sometimes you
wish you could just pick up the phone and talk to the author or meet the
characters who make life long and lasting impressions on you. Well, here at
Traill we can’t quite offer you that, but we can give you the next best thing:
Traill Readers.
Traill Readers is the new place to share your thoughts, opinions and discuss
books regularly. Not only will there be face-to-face meetings through ECAs,
there will also be a website where you can post your ideas, complete quizzes
on the book of the month and share book reviews on absolutely any book you
want. Cool, hey?
Everyone sees the world differently. What if my ideas are wrong? I hear you
say. Don’t worry; no ideas are wrong. Everybody will take different things from
a story. The great thing about reading the same book as others is sharing your
thoughts – it makes the story much more real! You can even invite your
parents along (although this is entirely up to you!).
Statistically, people who read are more likely to achieve higher IGCSE results.
So why not take part in a fun, interesting and engaging way to improve your
chances of succeeding in the future? If you have any questions about this
initiative, please see Mr. Ashley or Mr. Neil. You can get more information by
checking out the following website:

REDUCE
REUSE
RECYCLE
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: are 3 words we
have been trying to promote at Traill
and this is our latest effort. 9A are the
most recent students who are trying
their best to make a difference. The
entire class all made excellent
contributions to promote the message
of sustainability through a carnival
game project made completely out of
recycled materials, raising a staggering
1,200฿ in just one lunch time – an
outstanding achievement from a load of
old rubbish!
Using a set standard of judging criteria
the 2 winning teams were taken to an
external event at St Stephen’s
International School, competing against
the best teams from other Bangkok
schools, and even teams as far away as
Khao Yai!
Despite tough competition, Seueng, Da,
Mook and Mika all managed a 6th place
finish, narrowly missing out on 5th spot
taken by Callum, Shin Shin, Fergus and
Jessica. There were very few points to
separate all of the teams, and a
thoroughly enjoyable day was held by
the hosts St Stephen’s.
The message of sustainability was
interestingly put forward in a variety of
ways. Games and ideas were really
fascinating and no doubt all of the
participants now have a deeper
knowledge of the importance of
sustainability. Hopefully they will be
ambassadors of this idea and spread
the importance of this message
throughout the school and their local
communities.

TRAILL ASTRONOMY GETS REAL As part of the global community of amateur astronomers, Traill
students have been helping to process the huge quantities of
data being sent back from NASA's latest satellites. There is too
much data for NASA to cope with by itself. Some of this data is
uploaded onto the internet so that individuals in schools or at
home can download the data, process it and upload the results
back to NASA. We have been identifying the shapes and types of
some of the many trillions of galaxies in our sky. We have also
been hunting for planets around distant stars.
Through the use of Planet Hunters (www.planethunters.org)
members of our Astronomy Club have been helping to search
data from the NASA's Kepler spacecraft, searching for the
characteristic drop in light that suggests the presence of an
orbiting extrasolar planets (exoplanets) crossing in front of
parent stars.
Our young astronomers have also been working with Galaxy Zoo,
a project which invites people to assist in the classification of
large numbers of galaxies. The Galaxy zoo (www.galaxyzoo.com)
uses images from the Hubble Space Telescope CANDELS survey
and images taken with the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope in
Hawaii, for the recently completed UKIDSS project (the largest,
deepest survey of the sky at infrared wavelengths).

YEAR 7 PERFORMANCE
This term, the year 7 students worked
on creating a performance of a Fable
in their Drama lessons. The students in
7A performed their fables for the year
1 students at Traill, and the 7B
performed for the year 2 students.
The performers had an enjoyable time
bringing their stories to life and
performing for the children. They also
asked the students some
comprehension questions to make
sure they understood the lesson of
each fable. While the performances
were simply staged, it was a great
opportunity for the year 7 students to
perform in front of an audience.

FOOTBALL NEWS
The Boys U-15 football team continues to improve. Following a great performance in March where they were crowned champions of the Creer
Japanese Tournament by upsetting some great teams composed of Thai National team players, the Traill boys continue their run of success. Our
boys improved their record to 2 wins and 0 losses to position them in first place of the Arsenal Gunners League, a two month competition
composed of national academies. To round off a great week the boys pulled off a great victory this Sunday in a friendly against BSS, bangkok's
biggest football academy.
Our u13 boys are not staying behind. They are currently also undefeated and in first place of the Arsenal Gunners League. Also, they had a great
come from behind win this Sunday against BSS.
I'd like to congratulate both teams for their continued success, hard work and commitment, keep up the good work. I would also like to give a thank

TRAILL DRAGONS BASKETBALL TEAM
Traill International School vs. Bangkok Christian
May 4, 2015, Bangkok, Thailand
Our Traill Boys Basketball Team played Bangkok Christian
Varsity Team in a friendly match at Traill International School
Sports Hall. The Traill Dragons prevailed 52-44, over a tough
Bangkok Christian High School Varisty Team, which is regarded
as one of the Top 3 Thai high school basketball programs in the
country.
The team imposed their will to win and competed very well,
playing both ends of the court. Playmaker Red Johann Rubite
spearheaded the Traill offense while Mike Howell Yumul and
Alborz Ramhati proved better over Bangkok Christian’s big
men inside the paint, showing fluidity and mature team play. It
was a total team effort as all of our players contributed well,
from Kurt, Mahan and Samson’s aggressiveness on the
defensive end, to the steady long-range shooting of France,
Bright, Scottie, Cian, up to the “Run-and-Gun” style of play of
Fang, Kao and Marc, the team won each quarter.
This victory motivated our team to work even harder. The
players are very pleased that the hard work in training paid
off, from the skills and team training by Coach Troy and Coach
Joe, to Mr. Jayde’s strength and conditioning training, plus the
extra individual training of Mr. Allan for our players.
The team is preparing for the upcoming Dragon’s Cup
Invitational Basketball Tournament which will be held on the
29th -31st of May 2015 for the U14 and U16 Divisions, and on
5th – 7th of June 2015 for the U19 Division. Teams from
Shanghai, China and Jakarta, Indonesia will participate to
