To drive the vehicle it is necessary tohave all the requirements provided for inlaw (driving licence, minimum age re-quired, psychophysical ability, insurance, state taxes, registration, number plate,etc.).Gradually get to know the vehicle, driv-ing it in areas with low traffic and/or inprivate areas.

The taking of some medicinal prepara-tions, alcohol and drugs or psycho tropicsubstances notably increases the risk ofaccidents.Be sure that you are in good psycho-physical conditions, fit for driving, payingparticular attention to physical wearinessand drowsiness.

Most road accidents are ascribable tothe driver’s lack of experience.NEVER lend the vehicle to beginnersand, in any case, be sure that the driverhas all the requirements necessary fordriving.

Rigorously observe the road signs andthe national and local road regulations.Avoid any abrupt movement, which canbe dangerous for yourself and for otherpeople (for example: rearing up, speedlimit excess, etc.), and verify and alwaystake into consideration the road surfaceconditions, visibility etc.

Do not hit obstacles which could damagethe vehicle or make you loose the con-trol.Do not drive in the slipstream of thepreceding vehicles in order to increaseyour speed.

Always drive with both hands on thehandlebar and both feet on the footrests,in the correct driving posture.Absolutely avoid standing up or stretch-ing your limbs while driving.

The driver should neither be inattentive, nor be distracted, nor influenced bypeople, things, movements (do notsmoke, eat, drink, read, etc.) while driv-ing.

Use only fuels and lubricants that arespecific for the vehicle and indicated inthe "LUBRICANT CHART"; repeatedlyverify that the oil, fuel and coolant levelsare as prescribed.te.

If the vehicle has been involved in an ac-cident, if it has been hit or has fallendown, make sure that the control levers, the pipes, the wires, the braking systemand the vital parts haven’t been dam-aged.If necessary, have the vehicle controlledby an aprilia Official Dealer, asking himto carefully check the frame, the handle-bar, the suspensions, the safety partsand the devices whose integrity you arenot able to verify.Always remember to report any malfunc-tion to the technicians and/or the techni-cians to help them in their work.Never use the vehicle if the suffereddamage can endanger your safety.

Do not absolutely change the position, the inclination or the colour of: plate, turnindicators, lights and horns.

Any modification carried out on the ve-hicle or the removal of original parts canimpair the performance of the vehicle, thus reducing its safety level or evenmaking it illegal.

As far as the equipment of the vehicle isconcerned, always keep to the nationaland local laws and regulations. In particular, avoid increasing the perfor-mance or changing the original featuresof the vehicle by means of technicalmodifications.Absolutely avoid racing with other ve-hicles.Avoid off-road driving.

Before moving off, always wear yourcrash helmet, correctly fastened. Makesure that it is homologated, sound, of theright size and that the visor is clean.Wear protective clothing, preferably inlight and/or reflecting colours. This way you will make yourself morevisible to other drivers, thus notably re-ducing the risk of being knocked down, and you will be more protected in case offall. This clothing should be very close-fit-ting and fastened at the extremities.Strings, belts and ties should not behanging down; prevent these or other ob-jects from interfering in the drive by get-ting entangled with moving parts ordriving mechanisms. Do not keep objectswhich can be dangerous in case of fall, for example pointed objects like keys, pens, glass vials etc. in your pockets(the same recommendations are valid forany passenger, too).

The owner of the vehicle is responsiblefor the choice, installation and use of anyaccessory.Avoid installing accessories that coverhorns or lights or that could impair theirfunction, limit the suspension stroke andthe steering angle, hamper the operationof the controls and reduce the distancefrom the ground and the angle of inclina-tion in turns.Avoid using accessories that hamper ac-cess to the controls, since this can pro-long reaction times during an emergency.Large fairings and windscreens assem-bled on the vehicle can produce aerody-namic forces capable of compromisingthe stability of the vehicle itself whiledriving.

Make sure that the equipment is wellfastened to the vehicle and is not dan-gerous during the drive.Do not install electrical devices and donot modify those already existing toavoid electrical overloads, because thevehicle could suddenly stop or therecould be a dangerous current shortagein the horn and in the lights.

/2$'

Be careful and moderate when loadingyour luggage. It is necessary to keep theluggage as close as possible to the ba-rycenter of the vehicle and to distributethe load uniformly on the two sides, inorder to reduce any lack of balance tothe minimum.Further, make sure that the load is firmlysecured to the vehicle, especially duringlong trips.

10

Page 11: Aprilia Moto 6.5 1995 Owner's Manual English

Absolutely do not hang bulky, volu-minous, heavy and/or dangerous objectson the handlebar, the mudguards andthe forks, as the vehicle could reactmore slowly in turns and its manoeuvra-bility could be unavoidably impaired.Do not place too bulky bags on the ve-hicle sides and do not hang the crashhelmet from the apposite string, as theycould hit people or obstacles, thus caus-ing the loss of control of the vehicle.

Do not carry any bag if it is not tightly se-cured to the vehicle.Do not carry bags which protrude toomuch from the luggage-rack or whichcover the lights, the horn or the indica-tors.

Do not carry animals or children on theglove-compartment or on the luggage-rack.

Do not exceed the maximum load allowedfor each side-bag.When the vehicle is overloaded, its sta-bility and its manoeuvrability can be com-promised.

During refuelling, avoid pushingthe gun (1) to the buttom of thetank, in order to prevent fuel

from flowing out of the filler.Screw the plug up carefully after re-fuelling.The fuel used for internal combustionengines is extremely inflammable andin particular conditions it can becomeexplosive. It is important to carry out the refuellingand the maintenance operations in awell-ventilated area, with the engine off.Do not smoke while refuelling or nearfuel vapours, in any case avoid any con-tact with free flames, sparks and anyother heat source to prevent the fuelfrom catching fire or from exploding.Further, prevent fuel from flowing outof the fuel filler, as it could catch firewhen getting in contact with the red-hotsurfaces of the engine. In case some fuel has accidentally beenspilt, make sure that the area has com-pletely dried and before starting the ve-hicle verify that there is no fuel insidethe fuel filler neck.Avoid any contact of the fuel with theskin and the inhalation of vapours; donot swallow fuel or pour it from a recep-tacle into another by means of a tube.

Check the coolant level every 2000 kmand after long rides; change it every12000 km or every 2 years (whichevercomes earlier).

Remember:1 mi = 1,6 km1 km = 0,625 mi

According to the freezing temperature ofthe cooling mixture you want to obtain, add water to the coolant percentage indi-cated in the following table:

FREEZING POINT°C

COOLANT% VOL.

-20° 35

-30° 45

-40° 55

It is useful to keep the same mixture alsoduring the summer, since this reduceslosses through evaporation and thereforeit is not necessary to top up very fre-quently. This way, the deposits of mineralsalts left in the radiator by evaporatedwater decrease and the efficiency of thecooling system is thus preserved. For the cooling solution, use distilledwater mixed with antifreeze.

Do not remove the radiator plugwhen the engine is hot, since thecoolant is under pressure and its

temperature is high. If it gets in contact with the skin or withclothes, it can cause severe burnsand/or damages.

The coolant is noxious:

DO NOT SWALLOW IT KEEP AWAYFROM CHILDREN

CHECKING AND TOPPING UP (Fig. 16)

◆ Let the engine cool down for a fewminutes.

◆ Keep the vehicle in vertical position.◆ Make sure that the level of the liquid

contained in the expansion tank is in-cluded between the "MIN" and "MAX"notches (Fig. 16).

◆ If not, remove the filling cap (1).◆ Top up until the level of the fluid ap-

proximately reaches the "MAX" notch.Do not exceed such level, otherwisethe fluid will flow out when the engineis running.

◆ Put the filling cap (1) back.

Avoid parking the catalytic ve-hicle near dry brush wood or inplaces easily accessible to child-

ren, as the catalytic silencer becomesextremely hot during use; be verycareful and avoid any kind of contactbefore it has completely cooled down.

The catalytic vehicle is fitted with two si-lencers with metal catalytic converter ofthe "platinum-rhodium bivalent" type. This device provides for the oxidation ofthe CO (carbon monoxide) and of the HC(unburned hydrocarbons) contained inthe exhaust gases, changing them intocarbon dioxide and steam, respectively.Due to the catalytic reaction, the hightemperature reached by the exhaustgases makes for the burning of the oilparticles, thus keeping the silencer cleanand eliminating the exhaust fumes. To have the catalytic converter functioncorrectly and for long and to reducepossible problems regarding the soilingof the thermal unit and of the exhaust, itis necessary to avoid covering long dis-tances with the engine running at con-stantly low rpm.

It is sufficient to alternate these periodswith periods in which the engine runs atrelatively high rpm, even if only for a fewseconds, but rather frequently. What has been stated above assumesparticular importance for the cold startingof the engine: in this case, in order toreach a rpm regime sufficient to enablethe "priming" of the catalytic reaction, youjust need to make sure that the tempera-ture of the thermal unit has reached atleast 50° C, which generally occurs a fewseconds after starting the engine.

Leaded petrol destroys catalyticsilencers! Do not use leaded pe-trol for the catalytic version of

the vehicle.

Periodically check the tyre infla-tion pressure at room tempera-ture. If the tyres are hot, the

measurement is not correct.Carry out the measurement especiallyafter long rides. If the inflation pressure is too high, theground unevenness cannot be damp-ened and is therefore transmitted to thehandlebar, thus compromising the driv-ing comfort and reducing the road hold-ing during turns. If, on the contrary, the inflation press-ure is too low, the tyre sides are undergreater stress and the tyre itself mayslip on the rim or it may become loose, with consequent loss of control of thevehicle.

In case of sudden braking thetyres could even get out of therims. Further, the vehicle could

skid while turning.Check the surface and the wear of thetyres, since tyres in bad conditions canimpair both their grip and the control-lability of the vehicle.Change the tyre when it is worn out orin case of puncture on the tread side, ifthe puncture is larger than 5 mm.

After repairing a tyre, have thewheels balanced. Use only tyresin the size suggested by aprilia,

see p. 56 (TECHNICAL DATA).Make sure that the tyres always havetheir valve sealing caps, to preventthem from suddenly going flat.Change, reparation, maintenance andbalancing operations are very import-ant and should be carried out by quali-fied technicians with appropriate tools. For this reason, it is advisable to havethe above mentioned operations carriedout by an DSULOLD Official Dealer or by aqualified tyre repairer. If the tyres are new, they may still becovered with a slippery film: drive care-fully for the first kilometres.Do not oil the tyres with unsuitablefluids.

30

Page 31: Aprilia Moto 6.5 1995 Owner's Manual English

Avoid opening and closing thethrottle grip repeatedly and con-tinuously, so that you do not ac-

cidentally lose control of the vehicle. If you have to brake, close the throttleand put both brakes on, properly exert-ing pressure on the braking parts, inorder to obtain uniform deceleration.

By putting on the front brakeonly or the rear brake only, youreduce the braking force consid-

erably, thus running the risk of lockingone wheel and consequently losinggrip. Before beginning to turn, slowdown or brake driving at moderate andconstant speed. If the brakes only are continuouslyoperated on downhill stretches, the fric-tion surfaces can become overheated, thus reducing the braking efficiency.Exploit the engine compression andshift down using both brakes intermit-tently.Do not drive with the engine off!In case of wet ground or scarce wheelgrip (snow, ice, mud, etc.), drive slowly, avoiding sudden brakings or ma-noeuvres that could make you lose gripand fall down.

Pay the utmost attention to anyobstacle or variation of theground. Uneven roads, rails,

manhole covers, indications painted onthe road surface, building site metalplates become rather slippery by rain. For this reason all these obstacles haveto be carefully avoided, driving smoothlyand bending the motorcycle as little aspossible.Always use the turn indicators timelywhen you intend to change lane or di-rection, avoiding shrp and dangerousmovements.

The running-in of the engine is primary toensure its working life and its correctfunctioning. If possible, drive on hill roads and/orroads with many bends, so that the en-gine, the suspensions and the brakesundergo a more effective running-in.Keep to the following indications:◆ Do not open the throttle suddenly and

completely if the speed is low, bothduring and after the running-in.

Remember:1 mi = 1,6 km1 km = 0,625 mi

◆ During the first 100 km, put on thebrakes with caution, avoiding sharpand prolonged brakings. This ensures a correct settlement ofthe friction material on the brake discpads.

◆ During the first 500 km, never exceed4000 rpm (see table).

◆ Between the first 500 and 1000 km,never exceed 5000 rpm (see table).

After the first 1000 kilometres, carry out the checking operation-s indicated in the Periodic main-

tenance chart, see p. 37 (PERIODICMAINTENANCE CHART), in order toavoid hurting yourself or other peopleand/or damaging the vehicle.

◆ Between the first 1000 and 2000 kmdrive more briskly, change speed anduse the maximum acceleration only fora few seconds, in order to ensure bet-ter coupling of the components subjectto wear; never exceed 5500 rpm (seetable).

◆ After the first 2000 km you can expectbetter performance from the engine, inany case without exceeding 6250 rpm.

The vehicle is provided with a single-unitchain, in which the main joint is not used.

An excessive slackening of thechain can cause its coming outof the pinion, which often results

in accidents or serious damages to thevehicle. Periodically check the slackand if necessary adjust it, see p. 41(ADJUSTMENT). To change the chain, contact your DSULOLD Official Dealer, who will ensure you careful and promptservicing.

If maintenance operations arenot carried out properly, thechain may wear untimely and/or

Check the electrolyte level and the tighte-ning of the terminals after the first 1000km and then every 6000 km.

The electrolyte in the battery istoxic and caustic and if it gets incontact with the skin it can

cause burns, since it contains sul-phuric acid. Wear protection clothes, aface mask and/or goggles during main-tenance operations.

In case of contact with the skin, rinsewith plenty of water. In case of contact with the eyes, rinsewith plenty of water for 15 minutes, then consult an oculist without delay. If the electrolyte is accidentally swal-lowed, drink a lot of water or milk, thencontinue drinking milk of magnesia orvegetable oil and consult a doctorwithout delay. The battery gives off explosive gases;keep it away from flames, sparks, ciga-rettes and any other source of heat.During the recharging or the use, makesure that the room is properly venti-lated and avoid inhaling the gases re-leased during the recharging.Never invert the connection of the bat-tery cables.Do not incline the vehicle too much, inorder to avoid dangerous leaks of thebattery fluid.

KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN

◆ Remove the saddle, see p. 45 (LOCK-ING/UNLOCKING THE SADDLE).

◆ Remove the left side, see p. 45 (RE-MOVING THE SIDES).

◆ Remove the two screws (1) and plasticprotection (2).

◆ Extract the battery (3).◆ Make sure that the fluid level covers

the elements completely (the rightlevel must be included between thetwo "MIN" and "MAX" notches stamp-ed on the battery side). If necessary, top up by adding distilledwater.

◆ To recharge, disconnect the cables, extract the battery from its containerand remove the element plugs.A recharge with an amperage equal to1/10th of the battery capacity is rec-ommended.After the recharging operation, checkthe electrolyte level again and ifnecessary top up with distilled water.

◆ Tighten the plugs.

Always connect the batterybreather pipe, to prevent the sul-phuric acid vapours from corrod-
