A King In America the idea of a king can be a difficult concept for us to
understand. It goes against our culture. Sure we have a president, but a king who
can do whatever he wants, and subject the people under him to whatever his heart
desires? That just doesn’t seem right to us. Even our own president has limitations
on what he can do, because we are against anyone having complete authority. The
problem, however, is not in the concept of a king, but rather in our understanding of what a king does.
History shows us that most kings act like dictators, living life for their own pursuit of happiness or worldly gain.
This is not a king I would want to serve anymore than you do. A king’s real responsibility, however, is nothing
like a dictator. A king’s responsibility is to rule for the purposes of allowing His subjects to flourish and
prosper. A king protects his subjects, and administers justice to those who abuse or take advantage of his
people, even if it means sacrificing his own life to save the lives of his subjects. A king does not subject the
people under him to slavery or burdens meant to serve himself, but rather is there to serve the people by
listening to them, supporting them, and protecting them. Unfortunately, a true king is not easy to find,
especially if the people aren’t looking for one.
We didn’t go looking for a king, but the Good News is that our King came looking for us, His people.
Unfortunately, we rejected our King and despised His rule. We live our lives like we are the king of our own
castle, all the while not realizing that this rejection of our true King only leads us to death. How wonderful that
our King, Jesus the Christ, not only came looking for us but that He overcame us, death, and the devil.
And after His battle on the cross, Jesus rose victorious over all on Easter morning. Today our King reigns on His
throne and rules with authority, justice, and power. Not like a dictator in this world, but like a king was meant
to rule, with love. Our King “shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:8) Like a true king, He came “not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for
many.” (Mark 10:45) Our King listens to us when we pray. He supports us in every aspect of our life letting us
know that He is with us “always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) Our King took on human flesh and
walked among His people, to share in our sufferings in this world. He gave up His own life in defense of ours,
so that we could be won back from death and the devil.
We live now, knowing that we have a King who won the battle. And we know that Jesus will reign on His
throne forever. (2 Samuel 7:13) Our victorious King loves us and serves us, and one day He will take us to His
new kingdom where “He will wipe away every tear from [our] eyes, and death shall be no more, neither
shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.” (Revelation 21:4) That’s a promise our King makes to
us and that’s a King worth serving. All hail the King, Jesus the Christ!
In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf

Wednesday Evening Bible Study
Come join our Adult Bible Study led by Pastor Rolf. We are resuming our
study on April 6th in the Fellowship Hall. Join us every Wednesday evening
from 6:30 until approximately 7:45.
New Bible Journaling Group
This is a new group and everyone is invited. If you like to doodle, draw
pictures, color with coloring pencils, or just underline; then please join us
for this new group of fellowship and doodling in our bibles. Journaling is a
great interactive Bible Study method. It helps you to interact with God’s
word by recording your thoughts on what you’re reading. Going back
through your journal can help you reflect on what God has shown you in
His Word. And you have an heirloom that will be special to your family.
This should be a lot of fun interacting with others and learning more
about God’s Word. For information contact Deb Baldwin or Carol Malone
at 816-365-7397 or the church office at 816-353-3813. We will meet on
Wednesdays at 11:00 am.

LWML (Lutheran Women Mission League) The topic for April 2016 Circle Meetings is found in the Spring Quarterly on page 18 and is entitled “Milestones of Faith” authored by Shari Miller, wife of Rev. Larry Miller. She has served LWML in many capacities, recently as LWML Strategic Planning Facilitator. She is past District President of the LWML Montana District. She lives in Helena, Montana and has written numerous articles and studies for the LWML
Milestones of Faith” – a Milestone is a meaningful moment in the life of an individual. Our faith is also formed through significant milestones. Through God’s word and means of grace our Benevolent Father has provided us with stepping stones to guide us on our faith journey. (submitted by Kathleen Jarvis)
Roll call word is “Faith”. Alpha Circle will meet Monday, April 4, 2016. The meeting will be held at the Church in the Fellowship Hall with Elaine Nolen hosting the meeting with Cindy McCubbin as her co-hostess. The topic will be led by Jean Roberts. Carol Head will check the acolyte robes for laundering or mending needs. For more information, please call the president of Alpha Circle, Elaine Nolen at 816-358-1773. Lydia Circle (our newly formed circle) will meet Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Wilma Seutter and Peggy Noah will host the meeting. Joyce Shropshire will lead the topic.
+++++ “Miss Leading” – The LWML Leader Development Committee is introducing LWML’s own “Miss Leading” – She is a “Leaders Leader”, creating unity and rapport among her group, she’s a true servant of her lord, exemplifying leadership qualities among us. What does a leader look like to you? We often think a leader as the one who takes charge and gives directives. She’s the unquestioned voice for the group, the decision-maker and expert. The group looks to her for the definite answer. God has gifted LWML leaders with many different qualities such as the ability to get along with others, listen and love as Christ loves. These leadership qualities focus on relationship. Perhaps you are that kind of unifying leader who thinks sharing a hug now and again is good for the group. What qualities has God given you to use in leadership? Are you thankful for the God-given gift of hugging? Try it, you might like it.
+++++ +++++ “Mites, Mites and Mite Box” – Based on the biblical account of the widow’s mite (Luke 21:1-4), the Mite Box is intended for regular contributions of “Mites” offering above and beyond the support given to congregation
6
and the LWML. Mite Box contributions amount to millions of dollars that fund district and national “Mission Grants” and implement the LWML Program. Districts retain 75% of Mite offerings – National 25% Mission goal for 2015-2017 Biennium: $2,000,000.00 Amount Received $883,107.34 Amount needed $1,116,892.66 Give from your heart, the widow gave out of her poverty.
+++++ +++++ +++++ “Conventions, Conventions” – Missouri District Convention will be held in Cape Girardeau at the Osage Center on June 3-5, 2016. The Theme – “God’s Love Spans the Centuries” based on Matthew 28:20b and “Surely I am With You always, to the very end of the Age”.

Sewing Bee
The ladies plan to meet every Monday in April. We meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 am. Bring a sack lunch and stay into the afternoon. By mid-March we had completed 32 quilts this year. An average of 7 ladies come and we would be happy to have others join us. Please save your Best Choice UPC’s, “Box Tops for Education” and “Labels for Education” from
Campbell’s and other products. Also save your cancelled postage stamps and leave a ¼ inch margin of envelope around the stamp. Containers for all these are on the shelf in the Narthex.
A Word from the Spinner
“The Spinner” actually is a spinning rack in the entryway that most people walk by every
Sunday without giving it another thought. But wait a minute! Would this simple wire
contraption actually be a way for you to give comfort to someone you know – or witness
God’s love to a neighbor? There are pamphlets available covering a variety of topics. Why not
give it a spin and see if one fits a need that you know of.
Two new topics have been added. Hopefully you’ll never find a need to read or share one, but
it you do…
“The Unbearable Sorrow – When Suicide Hits Home” The taking of one’s own life is one of the most shocking
events of human nature. The finality of the act leaves us bewildered and full of questions. Why? How could
this have happened? What was bothering this person so much? What more could I have done? What more
should I have said? These are the questions of suicide’s survivors – those left in the wake of emotion and
confusion after a loved one has taken his or her life.
Written in part by one who has been there, this Project Connect booklet examines this tragic event. Blending
a firsthand account of a recalled, final conversation, with honest observations on what it means to grapple
with such a death, this booklet concludes with spiritual insights into suicide and how God works through all
things – even surviving the suicide of a loved one.
“Finding Peace-Overcoming Anxiety” Anxiety has become epidemic. Many of us are frazzled by family
problems, stress at work, financial woes and a thousand other hassles. If you are chronically troubled by
fatigue, edginess, a churning stomach, heart pains, trembling and shaking, dizziness and/or migraine
headaches, you are not alone. Like millions of other people, you may be struggling with anxiety, panic attacks
or phobias.
There is help. Read the true stories of three people who recovered, finding hope and healing for the physical,
emotional and spiritual problems caused by anxiety.

FAMILY FUN FESTIVAL

What was the March issue of The Lutheran Witness About?
Here are just some questions posed in various articles in the most recent issue? What do
you think the answers were?
What is the essence of being a Lutheran Christian in mercy?
Why should our congregation do acts of mercy?
What can we do as a congregation to show mercy?
Which acts of mercy can help our congregation grow?
How do we begin doing acts of mercy as evangelistic outreach?
Why does God allow suffering?
If something bad happens to me, is God punishing me for my sin?
Can anything good come out of bad things?
What do I do when I feel like my life is falling apart?
This issue offered a 360-degree view of mercy, from its biblical foundation to how it looks in daily life. You
would’ve discovered what mercy in the midst of suffering looks like on the mission field, why showing
compassion is an important part of congregational life and how you can make the case for mercy in difficult
conversations, even regarding topics like end-of-life issues.
“The Lutheran Witness” is the official periodical of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and is published 11
times per year by Concordia Publishing House. It provides Missouri Synod laypeople with stories and
information that complement congregational life, foster personal growth in faith and help interpret the
contemporary world from a Lutheran Christian perspective. If this sounds like a magazine that you want in
your home and thoughts, check with the office or Pastor for further information.

Book Club
“A Thousand Tomorrows” Karen Kingsbury
A talented young man, angry and isolated. A mysterious women with a secret. The two are national champions, top of their game, alone and intent on staying that way. How could they know what would happen when their two worlds meet? And what fears must they face if together they ignite a love that burns brighter than both of them? Cody Gunner is a nationally renowned bull rider—cocky, brash, a legend among his peers. On
track to the top, Cody has rejected everything about his past—his famous father, his hurting mother, and every woman who ever came along. His heart has room only for his young handicapped brother. Ali Daniels is the most recognized horsewoman in her sport. She embraces life, making the most of every moment and risking everything for her passion. Along the way, Ali seeks to fulfill the dreams of her little sister, a girl who died before she had a chance to live. And so competing is all she needs until the day Cody discovers what Ali has been hiding so well. Reluctantly Ali allows Cody into her private world. Despite their fears, they bare their souls and love finds them in a way that it seldom finds anyone. In a breathless race for time, their love becomes the one part of them that will never fail, never die. In the end they find something brilliant and brief—a thousand tomorrows.
